  • How to disassemble a Dyson DC17 Cyclone Pack in order to clean / unclog it.
    I washed the parts submerged in a bucket of warm water with Spic and Span powder.
    I also tried using a power washer on it but the results were not as good as with a washcloth and Q-Tips/Cotton swabs.
    Make sure the parts are 100% dry before reassembling.
    Ignore the first two screws you see on the ground they don't need to be removed until after you pop the shroud off and start removing the other screws. I took them out earlier than necessary.
    Also the screws are torx 15 "T15"

    I don't leave comments ever. This my first and I've been using CZcams since its inception.
    This is by far one of the best instructional videos I've seen on CZcams. No irrelevant babble or annoying music in the background. Even thought of sparing us the actual time it takes to complete procedure by speeding the video up.
    Bravo sir. If CZcams had awards this clip by far would trump other candidates. Please find more things to repair and post them.

    Thank you sooo very, very much for showing me how to disassmemble and reassemble the DC17. I've owned mine about 8 yrs now and I wanted to clean it because after vaccuming the DC17 would leave a foul smell in the air. Now that the DC17 has been thoroughly cleaned reassembled & tested, the air smells great, Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Best video on how to take apart and clean the DC17 Cyclone Pack. A local vacuum repair shop said it couldn't be done. After watching your video, I easily took it apart, cleaned everything and reassembled it without any difficulty. No damage what-so-ever to the parts. The 2x4 is key to disassembling the unit. Thank you so much for the excellent video.

    thank you for this amazing video. I watched it about 50 times in order to do the reassembly part, which I found to be the most challenging. Lining up the almost invisible arrows on the 2 white parts was tricky. But, without your help, my vacuum would be at the service center for 2 weeks with a bill for over $100. And, i was not strong enough to separate the 2 parts in the beginning, so I had my husband do it, and voila! It came apart! The cones on my vacuum were so clogged (6 of the 8) that I cannot believe the machine could pick anything up. Now, it's like a brand new machine! Thank you again for your generosity in sharing this with the public.

    I traded a window AC unit for a D.C. 41 which I love! Having 4 Boxers & 2 cats a quality Vac is essential! I've always just pulled the top filter out then would flip the top cyclonic part upside down (canister removed) and fill with soapy hot water and shake it. Then repeat with clean hot water until water comes out clean. I've never lost any suction or had failures or blockage. But I will try this as I love taking shit apart and see how much more performance I get out of it (if any)

    Even if has already been said, it bears repeating, you will need a Torx bit size T15. Any good hardware store should know what you mean if you just say "T15 bit"
    And preferably a long skinny one. Not one of those little stubby ones.

  • @MajorDistraction_MD

    DC65 is similar. Instead of a 2x4 you just carefully pry the top apart by releasing the purple tabs from the grey cylinder. The top comes off after removing 7 T15 screws and the rest is easy and quite similar to the video above.

    its important that any plastic is bone dry before reassembly. This is because any water that would be left in the cyclone assembly would mix with the dust and because the dust is so fine; it would dry like rock hard cement. if there were a lump of this 'cement' left in the cyclone then it would change the shape of the cyclone and change the suction path from a cyclone to a straight suction path; causing the dust to travel further towards the motor like a conventional vacuum cleaner. Dyson dosnt mention this for fear of making their cleaners seem unreliable. just make sure that no water enters this part of the cleaner whatsoever. consider using rinse aid to make sure that no water is left; or maybe drying the cyclones in an airing cupboard.

    My stair cleaner started to work less and less so After cleaning the cylinder as you so brilliantly documented her I attached the stair attachment and it still does not turn the wheels like it did when it was new.
    Any advice in what it may be?

    • @mek4321
      @mek4321  Před 9 lety +2

      There are quite a few possible problems. Most likely it is a partial clog in the removable U-bend at the base of the wand/hose or up in the tubing directly above the U-bend that moves back and forth from wand to floor suction. Or a partial clog in the aluminum tube of the wand itself. If there are no clogs check for tears in the flexible hose and that the hard tubing above the U-bend is properly seating itself over the U-bend when the vacuum is moved back into the upright position. The U-bend is simply removed with one screw that can be turned with a quarter. It is important to make sure that it is seated properly when re-installed as sometimes it seems like it is back in place but is not fully connected on either side and lets a lot of air in.

    Thank you for the video. One thing you didn't show, was how to remove the bottom door from the dust container. What is your technique for removing that door without breaking it? There doesn't seem to be enough clearance to get a screwdriver in and pry one of the pins out of it's pocket, and if I pull the door to one side or the other to flex one of the pins, the dust container itself flexes and the pins don't look to move. Any suggestions?

    • @mek4321

      Sorry but I dont have a good answer for that, its one of the most difficult parts to do. Those door hinge pins/tabs have broken off my DC-17 and DC-23 but they broke because I bang on the bin when the door is open to get the dust out. So now I have to hold the bottom on when I remove the canisters from the machine.

    • @anotherothermek9934
      @anotherothermek9934 Před 10 lety +1

      I don't own and have not tried to take apart a DC41 so I cant say. I only took apart my DC17 because I got it second hand and wanted to clean out the dog smell. Also the DC17 had a minor design flaw where sometimes the gasket ring would get out of alignment and allow dirt to flow into the cyclones backwards clogging them. Your DC41 is designed in a way that this should never be a problem, I also have a DC23 and have never needed to take it apart (it runs fine) and I vacuum up tons of stuff I shouldn't like drywall dust and saw dust with it. If it eventually seems like its not working as well you might want to try blowing a leaf blower through the bottom of the canister with the bottom open.

      I have not taken apart a DC28 but the general idea on disassembling might be similar. However it will probably look very different and not have as many parts since the DC17 uses Level 3 Root Cyclone and I think the DC28 uses the simpler Root Cyclone system. I would see if the dust shroud (the thing with all the little holes) will slide off and reveal any hidden screws first. Good Luck

    • @mek4321
      @mek4321  Před 9 lety

      elvmn12000 With the DC25 it is very unlikely that the problem is in the cyclone pack, when I fixed a DC25 for a friend I looked into disassembling the cyclone pack and couldn't see an easy way to do it without destroying the cyclone pack. The problem with their DC25 was that there was a clog in the tube behind the floor head and for the wand the elbow join at the bottom that gets pushed open when you click the wand all the way down would not always close when you took the want out. If you have another vacuum take the cyclone pack off your DC25 and put suction on the various DC25 ports to try and find the blockage, you can also use this test on the cyclone pack itself to see if it is clogged.

I can see the thing from the small hole of the cyclone chamber, just need to remove it.

      +Ray Man you need to be more specific about what part you cant get off, include a time code from the above video where you are stuck. Also make sure you watch the video with annotations turned on so you can read the on screen text.

      +mek4321 It's the blue part at 2:15. I have annotations turned on but there aren't any visible? I see I needed that special screw driver now. I have one with interchangeable heads, but mine isn't long enough to get at the screws inbetween the chambers, so I'll have to get a longer one. Thanks for the video mek:)

    Well done show how to take apart the collector.
    Ok You left out a key part the screws that have to be dealt with to break in half ? As I read more not it make sense with the posters are talking about T-15 bit

      Broke mine in half without unscrewing anything, no problems. Think the screws are for further along.

    It didn't look that dirty. Isn't just going to dirty after the first use?

      the main reason to disassemble is if the one of the cyclones is clogged, I had cleaned this one several months b4 this video, only made this video for demonstrational purposes

      As stated above, they will get completely clogged with hair, dirt, dust and it won't work 'as well'. This is a good depiction of how to clean it, maybe once every couple years to keep it operating tip top!
      Thank you for taking the time to create this video!

      +Sean Brennan I appreciate the video. Always good to know how to take something apart to fix or clean. I used my garden hose to simply clean the canister without taking it apart. It worked very well. As a precaution, I dried it out over an air vent in the living room for a day before reinstalling it. Looked brand new when I finished. First time cleaned in 4 years.

    This is exactly why I'll never own a bagless vacuum. Why would anyone want to have to disassemble and wash out the disgusting dirt that accumulates in those things?? I pull my bag out after about 2 months of using it, the bag seals shut, I toss it, put a new one in and that takes me all of 30-45 seconds. There are no muddy filters, no breathing in dirt and germs and my allergies don't act up. Bagged is healthier, cleaner, requires less maintenence and is easier.
