  • Somehow I lost the rest of the clips for the end of this video, but the bulk of it is still relevant for those looking to take one apart. As far as dysons go, these are one of the easier models to tear into, some of the more modern ones are more difficult.

If you choose to wash the canister in the dishwasher run it without the heated drying. This will lessen the chance of warpage of the plastic. Also, yes this is a mechanically intensive process. No this video isn't perfect and no I can't show everyone Step by Step how to remove EVERY single piece of hardware from it. If you are not mechanically inclined and can't figure the basics out you need to take this machine in to a vac shop. These aren't bissells or hoovers.

I wish I'd found this video yesterday. I just spent the past day and a half ripping my DC-17 apart due to a loss of suction. I knew about the filter under the canister but had no idea about the white HEPA filter. It turned out that was the problem...it was in desperate need of being replaced. It also wasn't easy to get the replacement filter IN. It's supposed to clip in in front of the vents, but good luck with that...not a lot of room to maneuver!
I also managed to pull the cyclone apart in order to clean the insides out. That...wasn't fun.
All in all a great video! Thank you for posting. I'm going to keep this handy for next time!

Thank you for your awesome, detailed instruction. We were able to open up and clean a Dyson that was put out in the trash. We pulled out twice as much gunk as you did. Took us 3 hours but totally worth it!

Can you please show how to get the plastic housing off of the bottom to access the screws. You said you carefully pulled it off, but that is not working for me. Are there certain places to apply pressure or pull. It is not budging at all.

Thanks for this. Appreciate the links to parts too. Not sure yet why the beater bar is not working yet?

Where did you find the lower duct hose? Amazon seems to only have them for the DC14 though it looks nearly identical to the DC17.

How did you test the motor? My dc17 will turn on and suck but the brush roller is no longer turning and the belt is still good. My thought is that it’s the brush roller motor but I want to make sure before I buy a replacement. Thank you for the video!

Thanks for your video. v informative. I have this DC17 MACHINE. Have a problem with it. the vertical part is stuck with the horizontal part at 90 degree and vertical part would not recline. I have to use lot of force to do that and it would make a loud sound when doing it. I feel something might break while putting force on the horizontal part to get rid of the stuck part. do you know what might be wrong with this stuck problem here. thanks. is there a way i can contact you over the phone. thanks.

@@hanksgarage_ I'll sand down the commutator bars and do some fine cuts between each one, it was left at my shop so I've got something to keep my brain busy for today lol It was unbelievably clogged up surprised to see so many design flaws.

The sheer volume of CZcams clips showing us how to fix myriad Dyson failures is emblematic of their design flaws. Given the cost of Dyson vacuums I will NEVER buy another. Too many death knells, even for those who know what they're doing - let alone the bereft owner who cannot do these repairs.
