Netflix "original" films are often pretty bad because they'll pick up stuff from festivals that no other studios wanted at a fairly cheap price. And they don't really care if people watch or not because they're making the money back on the subscription fees which they keep raising.

Indeed, Netflix cares about viewership only to the extent that it impacts long-term subscribership (on a 💲 *:* 👀 basis). This is an indirect, after-the-fact effect requiring considerable trial and error.
In general, I don't mind their "throw spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks" strategy. One subscriber's trash is another's treasure, after all. I can ignore others' favorite content as easily as they can ignore mine.
My main criticism pertains to Netflix's treatment of its original series, which shifted from "continually renew almost everything" to "cancel anything that isn't an immediate hit" around 2018.

I don’t think it could’ve been anywhere near as good as Hill House tbh. Hill House has great source material as a classic horror story from a feminist literary icon, an insane amount of film making talent involved, and a truly amazing cast. No shade to the cast on this movie, they probably did as well as they could, but it’s difficult to give characters like this any development when the writing is so trope-y. Haunting of Hill House should’ve won so many awards, and Victoria Pedretti was ROBBED of a nomination, she was SO good.

11:03 I actually feel like there's a really good idea in there. Maybe the story is about them moving into this old house and the wife is scared about a ghost, but the ghost is actually benevolent and trying to warn her about her abusive husband because she died in similar circumstances. But make this the LAST scene, where the main character is finally starting to realize that her husband is a bad person, and as he's attempting to lure her back in the ghost keeps breaking things to show he's lying. It could be like a climactic finish or something
Also the story should definitely been shorter

What's interesting to me is that Things Heard & Seen is absolutely, 100%, an Amityville Horror movie, but for whatever reason they did not want to put Amityville in the title. The characters have the same names, the themes are all the same, house on the water in New York, etc etc the similarities run way too deep (I've seen everything they slapped the word "Amityville" on). Like, the wife being freaked out by supernatural stuff that keeps happening but then slowly realizing it’s only ever gotten violent or dangerous around/in response to her husband…..becoming more curious about the presence and reaching out on her own (not via a seance bc I find those soooooo hackneyed and usually poorly done), a climatic scene near the end where her husband has reached his most violent and hell literally breaks loose all around them and the wife stands calm and confident amidst the paranormal activity because she has come to trust in and find protection within the presence

So…..this movie is based on a book that apparently got popular and a movie deal was put into development, and the ending is slightly different from the film, yet it doesn’t clear up anything about what the theme(s) of this story is supposed to be.
    Spoilers for the book below:
The father ends up getting away with the wife’s murder and he lives in that same house with their daughter. The daughter reaches college age and moves away, her life doesn’t go well and she feels lost in life. She comes back home and the dad is old, weak, and partially blind. She doesn’t get along with her dad and they have had a strained relationship most her life. She can (somehow) feel her mom’s presence in the house and feels comforted by it, but doesn’t question it much and just kind goes with being able to sense her moms ghost. She ends up falling in love with and moving in with the 14-year old boy who used to babysit her and do landscaping who is now grown up/older. The dad is left to (presumably) die in the farmhouse when old age finally takes him. She never finds out what actually happened to her mom, but I guess we can feel comfort in knowing the daughter is now happy…..??? And the cycle of abuse is “broken”???? (I guess????)
I just don’t understand why the mom was “destined” to die essentially and why this home seems to “attract” abusive couples.
I find it a very strange ending and honestly both book and movie seem to not have much of a clear direction to them. I have seen people offer up better ideas of how to work with the components of the story and basically all of them sound better than both book and film. It’s unfortunate it’s yet another film that doesn’t have any cohesion to it that leads to some sort of satisfying end.

as someone who grew up in an environment like that it can get "supernatural" once you said "he said I love you and their daughters light exploded" I was like "damn I felt that"
I wish they were better at storytelling because a relationship like that feeding into the entities in the house isn't unheard of. It's a good concept: horrible execution. A lot of times when a couple enters a house in ghost stories the abusive part is due to one of the family members being possessed or slowly falling into possession. These energies are used to feed the poltergeist (or other entities) that haunts the family/house in regular stories. It would be interesting to see the concept of people who are inside that dynamic due to their own selves be placed in a situation that symbolizes how far their violence goes. It really sounds like they have good bones but their storytelling was so chaotic that they didn't know how to really write it. The ring subplot could have been and should have been completely scratched.

This movie would've been way better if it was like an exploration into abuse and the effects it has on the people around you. We don't know about the abuse, or it's mostly hidden from us and then as the movie goes on it becomes more and more obvious.
If they truly wanted to do the ghost stuff, they could have it be that she's imagining things, or it's him gaslighting her into not trusting her own reality. Like she's so desperately searching for some kind of help or comfort after he's cut her off from everyone that she starts believing a ghost is there when it's not. And the previous family that died there could represent the sort of cycle of abuse or something like that.
Depending on the kind of ending they want, it could either be that the wife still gets murdered in the end, in which case I would suggest the daughter have been older and she escapes or something. Maybe goes to the boys who are groundskeepers and they help her with some kind of confrontation with the dad

I guess the message was that evil and good is cyclical? Like what was said evil only communes with evil while good attracts goodness. Yeah like what was the motivation of adding the evil ghost aspect if the husband was horrible and already kinda evil since the start.

    • @poralitical
      @poralitical Před 3 lety

@@neutralman9124 the formulas they're using to make decisions are bad ones because they have baked in assumptions which aren't going to hold true longterm- they're focusing almost exclusively on gaining new subscribers and what generates news/social media attention rather than what increases happiness of current subscribers becuase they assume that a steady stream of rotating new content is what's best. They haven't even really considered retention yet because they've taken their massive head start in the streaming wars for granted. But now many of the companies they licensed staple content from are all pulling back their content and Netflix is allegedly struggling to retain watch-times. They've paid astronomical sums to keep beloved shows while not fostering their own internally produced beloved series The shoe hasnt dropped YET, but it's coming unless they switch it up.
Netflix was cheap and convenient and had consistently enjoyable content available. It's getting less cheap, and the content is becoming a lot more hit and miss as they lose more and more streaming rights contracts.
This isn't just me. There's been tons of industry wide speculation for a couple years that Netflix is swinging wildly and just hoping they land on something. Aka the silicon startup model -- and so many of those end up imploding when they're stress tested. You can't just throw money at the problem and expect it to magically solve itself.
Netflix is in the peak throws of "the founder problem" --- the exact same strategies that got you to the top will not necessarily keep you competitive once there. They're just doing more of what they did in 2008, except it's increasingly becoming apparent that it's not working nearly as well anymore.
For example: I forget who it was, but they alluded heavily to the fact Netflix almost entirely looks at performance in the first 10 days. THAT is a terrible business practice as even the most inept network tv producer will tell you that most of the biggest hits took a minute to "find their audience". But Netflix mainly uses algorithms for decision modeling, and algorithms don't have the capability for artistic nuances and potential growth. Same over-reliance on quantitative data over human judgement is what got them into their whole Cuties scandal. Their decision modeling is broken. my argument is that how they evaluate if a show is worth it is based on a broken formula, which is why they're so cancellation prone after the 2nd or 3rd season (because they over-emphasize growth instead of stability)
