Honestly as someone who grew up around the church I wouldn't ever trust a rich pastor tbh. The pastors (and members of the church) never tracked people's donations at my church and would often help people who were having trouble in their personal life out of pocket. Our pastors lived comfortably sure but they didn't certainly have lavish wealth they flaunted in this way. They spent offering money mainly on helping feed and shelter the community and run programs for kids like daycare and camps and stuff. My problems with religion aside, I think churches should be uplifting communities rather than being parasitic assholes. It's so gross that they'd take money from their congregation like that.

Same here. I'm Methodist and the church I grew up going to was a nice church but small and in no way ostentatious. All donations were earmarked for certain things and financials were available for review. Once every month or two, they'd do an extra donation (which was in no way required and you weren't looked down on or treated differently for not donating or for donating small amounts of even a few bucks) specifically for the minister's discretionary fund. This would sit in account and supposedly the minister could decide on his own what to do with it but it was usually decided on by a vote of committee/staff/members. It might be used to send the youth group to help an elderly family fix up their house and farm in the summer or I remember one year it was used to buy cleaning supplies which were then handed out to those in the neighborhood near the church whose houses had just been flooded with 5 feet of water from a hurricane. One year we decided it was time to completely redo the nursery (which was severely outdated- it was basically the same as when I'd gone there as a small child and my children were going there). Our minister was given a small house and salary but he also worked as a waiter at a local restaurant because he had 2 kids in college at the same time

As the daughter of my ex church's secretary, I second this. However I did help with counting collections. Our church made well over 4-5k+ each week, and it was a small church in a relatively small town. I would've gotten confirmed at 18 if my favorite priest hadn't died(he was so chill, had a coffin for a coffee table and ended up being buried in it). The new priest asked that I denounce gay people and that black people were "lesser than." This was my confirmation interview. I definitely gave him a piece of my mind, despite being embarrassed for making a scene when my mom was working in the next room. Luckily she wasn't penalized, and actually- she received a fairly nice salary from being the church's only secretary, and I got to run around an empty church. I never did anything too crazy, but I explored every nook and.cranny, and enjoyed snuggling "the body of Christ" wafers so I could snack later. Never went into the wine, despite their starting us early(gave us wine starting 2-3rd grade)

I grew up in a very progressive Quaker church where we were told when the basket was passed, "if you have it, give it. If you need it, take it." This started with our new pastor and donations actually went up when you would expect them to go down.... People didn't abuse it and because they knew others might be needing a little extra boost that week, they were giving more than they usually would.

I remember the pastor when I was a kid. It was a white guy from Louisiana and somehow swindled my grandmas church to give 20%. They were pissed. They couldn’t even get the heat turned on one winter. My aunt looked into the church’s paperwork and found out he was taking 80% and was trying to sell the church. He didn’t know the congregation (most have been attending since the 50s) all have partial ownership so the church can’t be sold without everyone saying yes. She turned the paperwork over to the proper authorities and he was arrested for wire fraud. The pastor now is really nice, open minded, and refuses to take money. Even the money she is legally owed, she still won’t take it. I don’t know how churches don’t get in trouble for fraud. I went to the same church, for I would say 16 years of my life. They never set a precedent for how much you should give. They would always say “give what you can.” If you gave a quarter they were still just as appreciative as if you gave them $20. About two years ago I stopped back in and they were so ecstatic to see me. After worship the man on stage literally looked dead at me and pointed me out of the crowd talked about how he missed my grandparents and he was so happy to see me. I don’t think God truly cares about exactly how much you give. It’s just about giving and sacrificing. At the end of the day it’s what that sacrifice means to you.

I work in nonprofit & can provide some insights.
The “not in good standing” with the state isn’t always what it seems. Organizations have to renew their registration with the state every year. Sometimes, it takes a while for paperwork to process, during which time the status can expire & reflect that an organization is not in good standing. That said, it would appear in this case that the annual report & refilling was due 5/3/2023 so the organization definitely failed to file on time & deserve that “not in good standing” designation.
The org should have annual 990s available. The 3 years most recent 990s are supposed to be public. I can’t find them for this organization. Revival Way, Inc. is supposed to provide their 990s to anyone who requests them from the public so do with that what you will.

Then you take into account that churches are tax-exempt, and you can see why some churches and pastors/preachers are very wealthy while their parishioners struggle.

I went to one church where we were taught about tithes in children's Sunday school. Sometimes people in positions of power get greedy. It happened at the church on my road. There was tithing and offering but the only time soneone got called out because the pastor noticed they were giving and wanted to make sure they were ok. Happened to my mom and the church helped us out not shamed us. Our pastor had a job and drive a normal car. We were also never taught to hate gay people and people could wear pretty much whatever they wanted. Refreshments every Sunday and a lot of programs for youth. When I moved to Texas I was so disappointed by the churches (hypocrisy at level 100!) I just stop going. It’s annoying that people see people like this and group all Christians together.

Please definitely keep us updated on this one.
Tax season is here for a lot of us Americans I believe. (I haven’t been able to work nor am I able to work right now so correct me if Im wrong).
The IRS would probably love to hear about this if it’s in their purview, technically.
