I Did Not Teach Todd To Say This - Can You Believe Todd Did This Part 2

  • This is part 2 of a multi-part series on some amazing things Todd has done. I have always felt and believed that cats are far smarter than we give them credit for. I only teach Todd single words and their meanings/concepts. In Part 1 I showed how on his own Todd started using two, three, and four words to make kitty sentences for his requests and how he asked me to make him a toy.
    In this video, I show how Todd on his own is using the words he has to tell me things he wants me to know. I believe this shows he truly understands the words, their meanings, and concepts.
    Todd is a 6-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. We aim to let Todd express himself and tell me his wants and needs. Currently, Todd has 45 words on his soundboard. This channel is dedicated to Todd learning to “talk”. If you would like to see more of Todd and his day-to-day life please visit his Facebook page.

    My cat Jade passed away about a year ago but we started using talking buttons during lock down in 2020. At night I would read my phone before falling asleep. Every night when she was ready for bed she would hit the buttons “Tony Light”. To tell me it was time to sleep. I miss her hitting the I love you button so much. Working with her made me feel closer to her than any animal I have ever had, and it made me realize just how intelligent cats really are.

    To me the most amazing part of this is that Todd is using human language to talk to Glamour. This is reinforced by the fact that he is staring at her. Usually when I see cats staring down one another it's a sign of challenge. That's astonishing. Wow.

    He is such a bright and loving cat! I believe you are right about him putting words together that show complex thought and definitely more than just "push and reward." I have a lot of respect for Mr. Jackson Galaxy but believe in Todd's case he is able to do more with his words than just ask for something. He is truly a joy to watch! It makes me wonder what my cats would say if they could talk. I have one that would, no doubt, drive me nuts. Lol. Thank you for sharing Todd and his amazing abilities with us. I can't do buttons with my cats because I'm visually impaired and going blind, but I taught my 7yo cat, Pangur, a dozen hand signals back when he was younger. You have inspired me to start clicker training my raggie x domestic cats, Oberon and Artemis. They are doing really well, they are much smarter than we give them credit for. Having my babies run to me at the sound of a clicker is important for their safety, like if we have to evacuate in a hurry or they get outside.

      @kohlfrog Před 7 měsíci +5

      Hi fellow future blind person! I'm also visually impaired and loosing my vision. That said when I get my next pets, I do plan on teaching buttons. I'm just going to put bump dots on them or the mat next to them and have someone else do images if I can't see by that point. I think the text alerts would also be incredibly helpful as I wouldn't need to see them to know what they are asking/doing. Since the buttons can be positioned in a mat, it wouldn't be difficult to model them myself once I had the places memorized.
      The clicker training or maybe a whistle would be fantastic to call cats I can't find though and is something I hadn't considered. Thanks for the idea!

    • @angelawossname
      @angelawossname Před 7 měsíci +6

      @kohlfrog I have mobility issues as well which adds an extra layer of complication, I have seriously considered it, but ultimately decided against it. I have chronic uveitis as a result of auto immune disease. Clicker training has been great for the few times Pangur has got out, but I hadn't got around to teaching Artemis or Obie yet. It's also great if you have a hard time looking for your cat who is hiding, I can't exactly see my babies if they are hiding under the bed, because even if I'm having a good day and can get down to look under the bed, I can't see! They always seem to know when it's time for a vet appointment.

      @@angelawossname interesting! There is a good chance my eye problems are exacerbated by autoimmune issues as well! I get retinal bleeds in both eyes during flares, which isn't normal for my eye condition (myopic macular degeneration). I don't have any cats atm because we are focused on alterations to the house to make life easier. We don't want to get any new pets until that's completed and my dog takes the rainbow bridge. She's old and deserves my undivided attention during her remaining time. She would not be a good candidate for buttons or clickers as she's lost a lot of hearing lol.

    Interesting to think Todd was using the No button to talk to Glamour, since she shows no interest in the buttons. Probably more likely he wanted to complain to you about Glamour’s mistreatment in true sibling rivalry.
    I had one cat boy who was impatient for me to sit down so he could get his pets, regardless of my mood. And another dear little guy who was very attuned to my moods and used lap time for cheering me up. Each cat to their own personality, gotta to love them all!

      Yes, there is a lot of interpretation that is done and needed. It helps if you have a strong bond with your pet as Todd and I have just as a parent of a toddler can interpret the what the child is wanting with the limited communication s/he has. Todd has to tell me everything with his body language, looks, meows, and 45 words. He shows an amazing grasp of the concepts of the words he knows being able to use them to express words I have not taught him yet further showing his understanding. The best example I like to use is after he learned Happy and before he had Mad he would tell me Happy-No when he didn't like something (We will play later, it's not time yet for dinner, etc) He showed not not only understands the words and realizes it's oppisite and found a way to express it to me.

    I really want to try those buttons but with 4 cats it could get very confusing if they all talked at once. I, too, wish Glamour would talk so we could know why she swatted Todd, poor boy. I love how he looks at you everytime he says 'love you'

      From what I have seen, for some reason, only one cat in a multi cat household talks. I am truly blessed by how much Todd loves me.

      I believe the No was directed towards Glamour, telling her no for hitting him, and the Ouch sleep was directed at me, him telling me what Glamour did to him. At the time, he did not have a Glamour button, and it would have been interesting to see how he would have phrased it if he had.

    Excellent video! Todd amazes me more each time! "No sleep ouch" was perfect, but unfortunately completely lost on Glamour; Unless, she is learning by osmosis and repetition, but is just too CAT to use your human words board! I'm sure she was aware it wasn't a nice way to wake up, but really didn't care cuz Todd was in HER basket therefore deserving of a smack! Too funny.

      Remember that this is a foreign language for them so they are translating from cat to human. If you are learning a new language you will be slower in it too. We had all seen an interview with someone in a foreign country where the person is speaking English for the viewers and the are having to stop to search for the correct word. Until you can think in the 2nd language you will be slow in it.

    i had a friend who had a cat named coco with the buttons and apparently one time his cat pushed the buttons in an order like "why. cat. (two mins later) coco. human" and coco(cat) would just stare at the mirror for like 5 mins and push the button "human" like 5 or 6 times and then just stare at the mirror.

    First time seeing your channel. I love Billi and admire her Mom. Glad to have another talking cat to marvel over. I have 3 rescue cats, one had been dumped on a farm & the other 2 were community cats I socialized and brought in to live with me. I can read them all pretty well but I'm not sure if I'd want to hear what their opinions on my parenting are. 😂

      Welcome, I'm glad you are here! Yes, that was a concern for me for real. I travel for work, and Todd is totally bonded to me and hates it when I have to go. He has my wife and two other kitties here with him, so he is never alone. He will tell me No, No, No. When he sees the suitcase come out. All is forgiven as soon as I get home, though, and it's all Happy and Love You.

    Beginning to "suspicion" that a lot of us pet Owners often feel a bit "2 Big for our Britches." Our pets try to Look Out for Us the very best way they can. (It'd be a trifle l-o-n-g, but Todd needs a New Button -- one that says, "I'm the Momma!")

    I am on the fence about getting my Tuxedo Kirby set up with buttons, I know he understands everything I say to him because he proves it everyday. I just know his personality and have a feeling he would abuse the buttons for cheese and fairly light toy.

      Model "later" and "all done" now, and _then_ introduce buttons. Then be absolutely consistent in "all done" and "later" meaning you will not do it, no matter how many times they ask. If you are consistent about that, they will figure out that repeatedly pushing the button is pointless.

    • @TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks

      I don't recommend giving a food button too soon. I didn't give Todd his food mousey button until he knew 30 some words. They can become obsessed with it making it difficult to teach new buttons.
