  • If you're trying to teach your pet to talk, but are having trouble getting them to press the buttons themselves, this video is for you. I cover the concept of paw target training, tips for getting pets to activate the buttons after paw target training, and ideas for what to do if your pet isn't food motivated.

I have been using these buttons for a YEAR with the sad hope that my dog might eventually press one. I just tried this for five minutes and she's pressing her training button eagerly. You are my hero.

Wow I can’t thank you enough for your tutorials! I just introduced a button to my kitten for the first time and he literally learned how to press it within 10 minutes! Prior to that, I also followed your tutorial for Paw Targeting and my kitten also picked that up within a day!

This video is super helpful for the paw training. Making the transition to PRESSING the button was a tough one. One thing that was helpful for me - my cat loves the catnip sprays, so I will often spray one of her toys as a treat. I started spraying her toys over the buttons so that the overspray landed on the buttons. It gave her a reason to be interested in interacting with the buttons outside of our target training. She had her first full button press about a day after I started it.

I'm back watching this video for the third time, and had the bright idea to slow it down to 75%. The lovely lady's voice still sounds normal, and for those of us who are having trouble following her incredibly fast speech, slowing the video down is a godsend.

I can't edit the comment (even though there's an edit feature), so I just wanted to add that the one thing slowing it down does not do is produce any progress whatsoever. Chloe gets bored after 3 treats and walks away.

This video was so helpful. I started with Pinti in January, and added target training 3 weeks ago. This week she pushed OUT on her own. She’s now pushed it 6-7 times. BTW, I elected to record “Good girl, Pinti!” on the practice button. As a language educator, I support using real language with kids and decided to do the same with her.
So excited to see what words/concepts she uses next! THANK YOU!

I got a couple Fluent Pet buttons several Months ago. My cat was interested in them but not motivated to try. He loved when “I” pushed the “play” button because he understood I would play with him. I always kept the buttons out and often while playing he would accidentally step on a button. I would praise him. He would try to make the button go off but got frustrated and would bite the hex tile and paw the button loose. Eventually he made the button go off with his paw and was highly praised. I understood he finally made the connection, but he would get frustrated because he wouldn’t put enough pressure with his paw. He still has that problem often but he found that he can bite the buttons and put pressure enough to make them go off that way. I’m not sure how to get him to use only his paw. I’m going to try your method to see if that helps.

This is really good! We got some buttons for our cat, but I was afraid they would just expect us to press the buttons for her, and thus, she would never learn to do them herself. Glad I wasn't the only one who thought of the toy/laser pointer idea. Speaking of..."eyedeas" make sure that you're careful to not shine the laser pointer into your cat's eyes!!

I did have one question: Do you ever suggest picking up the buttons to put them away/hide them? I ask because my husband and I both work away from home so we worry that Ly will hit a button intentionally (after target training -- like you said around 6:50), but there will be no reward or attention so he won't understand that he did actually do right.

Hi there! I’ve been following you on tiktok for a while now and finally ordered some buttons for my cat about a month ago. Using your tips were slowly making some progress I think!
I’m curious what you think about buttons for someone who doesn’t work from home- would it be best , at least in the beginning of button training, to put buttons away when you’re not home so that any presses that might be happening when you’re not there don’t go un-rewarded? Perhaps in the future I’ll invest in a camera system like I see many other folks using but for now it doesn’t seem like a priority. Would love your input! Thanks!!

    • @justinbiebercat
      @justinbiebercat  Před 2 lety +7

Yay that’s exciting! That’s a good question, I’d still leave them out in the beginning (and definitely once they’ve learned!). I don’t think it would hurt their progress if they figured out how to press buttons while you were away, and I think as long as you’re making the buttons a fun activity when you’re home, they’d be likely to try pressing again in front of you. A bit of a different scenario since he already knows how to press them, but Justin still occasionally uses the buttons when I’m not home even though he’s never gotten a response - I actually think he knows I can’t hear him by now & is just talking to himself or thinking out-loud!

Nice! It's taken about a month to get my boy pushing the buttons hard enough (I used the lean for treats method once he was tapping them) and now we're on the stage of getting him to press them on his own volition. The boy prefers to stare me down at eye level (e.g. at my desk) until I guess the right thing lol Any ideas? I've made the 'game' of pressing buttons more challenging during practice by introducing a second button (pets) to try and make that association, and he has 3 others that he shows a lot of interest/excitement over that are near their sources (water, food, and play). I know he gets it, but he seems to think I need to be actively engaging the buttons for them to work.

    • @justinbiebercat
      @justinbiebercat  Před 2 lety +14

Haha, so stubborn!! That’s tough - I’d try getting a little stubborn back. If Justin is meowing for something but won’t tell me what he wants, usually my strategy is to lead him over to his buttons and say “use your words”. I’ll wait a moment for him to press, and if he doesn’t, I’ll go back to whatever I was doing. If another 5 mins or so pass and he’s still meowing, I’ll go back to the buttons and offer him something via modeling (“Play now”, etc), and then we do that activity. I want him to know his body language & meows still matter, but it helps him get what he wants faster if he can tell me. If it’s obvious what he wants, I’ll still go over and model it first (say he’s meowing near the door, I still lead him over to the buttons and say “outside”), so he learns the fastest possible way to get what he wants is via the buttons.

Then instead of recording paw on the button, they recorded a command like "outside" and when they pressed it you rewarded them with the command instead of a treat.

That's the way I started with my cat, because I knew the cup would just slide around on the floor and he'd tip it over.

My cats either don't see the treat at all, or they just don't use their paw when they try to get it out.

I love this video and my cat picked up with a day that he needed to touch the button. The problem is that he touches the side, he turns his little paw and touch the side of the button. Any tips on how to make him touch the top? I tried to go back to the container and start from the beginning but he keeps doing the same thing over and over again. Thank you!

My cat does the same thing, even with a container and treat. She'll just paw at the side of the container. I haven't figured out a solution yet either.

Try placing your hand comoletely around the container so the only available spot is the top.

I ordered the buttons and started pre-training with a tiny food cup and treat like she shows.
I sit on a stool and place the cup between my feet so he can't slide it around on the floor or tip it over.
I then tap the top of the cup and say treat. At first he mostly sniffed and pawed the side.
In the beginning, I'd reveal the treat if he pawed the side, but then I began delaying the reward, waiting to see if he'd finally tap the top.
The first time that he accidentally did that, I praised him and gave the treat.
After that happened, I only gave the treat if he put his paw on top of the cup.
It took 3 or 4 days for him to figure out what he had to do for the reward and perform with 100% accuracy.
He is a fairly smart cat, though.
I have another cat that I don't think will figure things out. She's very food motivated, but not too bright.
But who knows...she may surprise me!
Once the buttons arrive, I'll need to teach him how to press it hard enough, rather than just tap.
Did you figure out a way to get your cat to use the buttons?

HELPFUL TIP:If your cats use claws when they grab for treats, don’t give up! use gardening gloves!

My cat doesn't realize there is a treat under there so she is not interested. She keeps looking at my hand for a treat. We will keep trying.

@@090403created I did let her sniff the treat. I even put tuna and chicken under the dome. The chicken was exposed under the lid. Still not interested. She understands the word treat. Could you do a training of a cat who does not already know the paw command?

I see. Maybe she’s not hungry? I would keep trying. Or try it with a small toy (with motion and sound) ?

When my cat gets mad he just throws everything on my bedside table into the floor I'm disabled so it's really a big pain in the butt for me because I have to use those Grabbers and those Grabbers you know don't pick up the little tiny stuff so it's really a pain in the butt for me. He is a ginger boy Maine coon full bred brat and I was wondering and hoping if I got him and taught him a mad button if he would stop doing that I am a smoker but I do not smoke freely in the house I do smoke out of the closed up bathroom I smoke out the open window so he is not allowed in there in the bathroom because that's where I smoke out the window and he gets so mad well he's not breathing in that second hand smoke and he's not allowed to go in there for quite some time after I finish smoking it's just for you no safety precaution he's my baby number one and he's a $1,400 cat. He's also a Dennis the Menace at my old big house he got caught on the roof I had to rescue him and everything else he has broken his leg had to have a special orthopedic surgeon $2,000 never did heal right and everything else and no it did not slow him down he will be 2 years old this month

@@stephanieharper7349 I'm sorry, I had to laugh a little at this. We have a gray Maine Coon that when we first got him, he knocked things off my night stand at night too and raised hell with us for awhile too. He was a stray that we got at Paws when he was about 4yrs old. So, he was used to being outside. My husband built him a catio where he could go in and out as he pleased, but still be confined and safe outside and that fixed his attitude problem... Well, for the most part. He can still be a turd sometimes, but the biggest attitude issues we had with him resolved with him getting his catio. I think mostly, Maine Coons are just who they are though. They take a bit more patience than most cats because they have BIG personalities. LOL! We also have a ginger female, but not a Maine Coon and she has a lot of 'tude too.

Just one thing: 15 mins it's too long for a cat, it's better to use them several times during the day very few minutes so they keep paying attention.
