in this video very basic test of load time
I would like to call it a live video but it's not live. But I did recorded live and you can see it happened with the stop clock..
there's a whole bunch of different varieties available when it comes to IDe adapters.
hopefully this video will help somebody make a decision and make their decision wirelessly. Please make sure to watch the entire video to understand when I'm talking about
boot time was a couple seconds in between. I will say this if you're running Unleashed X. Expect longer boot times
if you're running something more modern like XBMC 353. Emulationstation xbmc4gamers Etc. boot times are pretty similar. some people might not have that extra money to spend on the name brand. I personally think the green eBay adapters are pretty decent. Just know that you can't just order one and expect it to work perfectly. you might want to order a few. And make sure you test..
this video helped at least one person and it's done its job

I have 4 of the chinese ones and no problems yet. All 4 worked out of the package and I haven't noticed any substantially longer boot time either.
Thank you very much for your comment let me know as time goes by
Michael Worthy what brand? I used HDE ones and it’s like 50% working so far. Still though $5 a converter compared to Star Tek $40 is better for me.
@@DeeLaRoc420 hde or hbe I can't remember the name. But one of these two I bought 20 a few years back. 60% of them was a fail rate. I contacted the seller Furious they kept sending me ones that did not work I will never go back to those people or that brand again. But I did have very good luck with jp1035
Retro Pro Frank methinks I’m doing the Star Tech ones for my crystal that I’m doing the Aladdin mod as that’s going to be my personal rack one for show. Others would be good travel/backup ones that I have with the HDE ones.
@@DeeLaRoc420 , looking back on my order from Amazon I'm using the HDE's also. Still no problems yet. And I agree with you on the price.
I bought TWO of those SATA to E-IDE adapters on fleabay. Am adding a SATA HD and a SATA DVD burner to an 'old' Dell Dimension 8250. They worked flawlessly with master/slave set on the adapter boards - connected via the ubiquitous 40/80 grey ribbon cable to the MOBO of the Dell. Am not experiencing any lags/hang-ups. The adapters were $8 each.
Oh yeah, they're the GREEN ones.
Popped in my mind yesterday at work if i can convert somehow a SATA to IDE for my old gaming PC, and voila, the solution is here!
You should replace the stock IDE cable with an 80 wire if you want the best out of the Startech or even the cheap adapters.
Thanks for video i have 2tb hdd and green adapter. I have been always thinking that my boot was slow but now i know it is normal. I boot in 39 sec
It's Unleashed x that slow
My Chinese adapter works great without any issues but recently when I checked the 2 capacitors on the adapter were leaking I had to replace them with new ones but still worth the price not bad!
Spot on Frank, nice video
Thank you very much I hope you enjoyed the video please if you get some time take a look at some of my older videos you may enjoy I hope you subscribe to the channel as well I have a couple videos in mind for this weekend thanks again
which dash is that you are running and the theme?
The issue I have run into with these adapters are some work as you showed others not so it's very hit or miss but i agree the startech ones are way over priced.
Its 2021, and I'm getting one of this for an ancient OG Xbox I recently restored. DVD isn't doing well, original HDD feels like its on life support, so gotta get a new HDD.
Dont think the dash is the issue with boot speeds. Im running a Seagate 500GB with one of those cheapo $3 Amazon adapters and Unleashx on a softmod 1.6 XBOX with a video skin in 720P and my boot time from power to full load is only 30.36 seconds
I have two of these gonna upgrade my hard drive with one
Great video, with great advice for if one would only do 1 xbox. but for realy good measurements, multiple boots, and proper file size transfer measurements and small/big files copying. And its not realy about the writing on the pcb, the IC is the intresting part, the actual IC is the most intresting thing to compare. these chinese sellers could even use the same pcb but diferent ic manufactures.
But hey, im being picky mainly because I feel people can feel scammed if the same IC is sold for 50 cents while startech is asking 5 euro the ic. actualy, startech isnt even selling the ic, they are selling the service, the box, cables and warrenty. So yeah, great vid. Go buy startech if you have the money, 1 xbox and dont wanna risk it.
I have a couple of these cheaper chinese and im happy with it. I even might wanna write some speedtest software to compare em... let some startech owners run it. but that would take time. also, measureing time more exactly would be involving capturing the buttonpress and stopping at the extact frame the image loads? who knows what kind of random the xbmc dash loads. ow never mind, ppl, go buy whatever and enjoy :D
Exactly pretty much comes down to whether or not you can afford startech. They are Addison Brands nobody's putting them down I just wanted to show that the knockoffs aren't that far apart. Now I've heard of people saying that they can die in a couple years I've had cheap Chinese adapters for a couple years as long as they work out of the box I haven't had a problem. That being said even a StarTek could die. And all comes down to luck. Now I know there was a bunch of other test I can do but this was the most important one to me because a lot of people in the forms were saying that the boot times were taking forever this may be true if you're loaning Unleashed X. But for some reason XBMC 353 emulationstation Gamers and Origins have a fast boot time program built-in or something like this.. in any event I had the Xbox live off and I just received this XBMC build as well as the green adapters so I figured might as well put a video out there. Thank you for your comments please consider subscribing to the channel and take a look at some of my older videos.
Thanks dude! First star tech on the way, but it’s just for my main. I’ve always used the cheap Chinese ones for years, and none have died if they worked originally. I am wondering the times to boot into certain emulators like Ninja or Final Burn Legends 🤔
To be honest it's been pretty spiffy with JP1035. Again the only problems I've ever encountered with this adapter is when trying to load Unleashed X. Everything else runs pretty good.. thanks for your input
I bought one of those Chinese branded, it worked perfectly fine, then started to take 1min, then 2 min to boot, until stopped competely, giving me always error 07. The strange part is that it works in my pc though, but not in any of my other 5 xboxes I have here.
I have 4 xboxes,3 with the green adapter and one with the red. They all behave the same
ok so as of February 2021 I'm using Unleash X with that same Chinese adapter and a 1TB sata drive and I recorded a 00.31.08 boot time so I guess I should be shot maybe. You also have to take into account HDD rpm as well. Cheap drive is gonna do cheap drive things.
I bought the blue cheapest one (Chinese). I don't mine if is 2 O 3 seconds more...
i got a couple of cheap chinese adapters that has 2TB hard drives on them an i boot to the xbmc origins dash in 30-31 secs i believe load times has to do with the mod used an the bios boots to various dash , good video though.
i need to figure out what is wrong with mine, i also use a 2TB sata drive. even launching a game takes for ever it feels.
El cheapo all the way!
Oh hard almost three years running mine have been working for..lol
TY sir
No problem if you like this video you should take a look at some of my other videos on my channel. Lots of Xbox related stuff. Lots of good topics please I hope you subscribe to the channel it really helps me out thanks again
Good video man. I picked up a star tech adaptor like yours. My question is where are you putting all the extra length of cords? I was thinking of cutting the hard drive tray and feeding it underneath. Thoughts?
Depends on the type of cable. If it's IDE you can just fold it underneath the DVD drive
Sorry I was unclear. The extra molex and power connector from the adaptor.
@@ericyoung3480 people use these to splice into in order to backlight custom jewels. I also heard of people cutting them off
I think I’ll just cut it off. I have another way of lighting up a box. :). Thanks man.
@@ericyoung3480 A bit late to reply, but you can buy ones without the pass through
Which dashboard is that reassemble 360? You're right startech if more for lone wolves who own a single or two Xbox not for someone who builds lots of systems
You'll see on my next upload I'm going to be hooking up a capture card and going through the build entire Lee hope you're subscribe to the CZcams channel so you don't miss the upload. Thanks again Frank
For me it takes like a minute to boot with the chinese one,i've tested with 3 different 80 wire IDE cables.
thans mate china produts are ok not all but are ok for repairs and like you say for one xbox startech adapter ok for 10 of more china adapter are the best and i think startech have a lot of components from china
I tried it and it doesn't work for me, while a generic Chinese IDE/SATA adaptor does.
With Startech it goes like this: the startup sequence stutters, the screen goes black and nothing else happens (I've waited multiple minutes each time).
With generic Chinese it goes like this: the startup sequence plays properly, it takes a longer while for the Microsoft logo to appear and the Xbox launches correctly.
No idea what I'm doing wrong.
Could be something wrong with your startech adapter try to return it for a different one
Thanks for the video. I have to disagree with you though about the use of UnleashX as a dashboard. I use UnleashX because I can run XVGM which looks, in my opinion, better than anything else out there.
I bought the startech adapter on Amazon and it was not playing well with the seagate 2tb hdd (from Amazon as well). I got error code 11 ( which is wrong bc my dvd drive works). Everything worked when I swapped the adapter for the generic green one! Definitely hit or miss on the adapters.
A lot of modders think it's an issue of the adapter and the hard drive being incompatible. The real issue has always been a conflict between the adapter and the DVD-ROM drive. As an experiment if you have a Modchip or TSOP mod, use a bios that you can modify with a setting to ignore the absence of the DVD-ROM and then try one of these adapters. You will be amazed how fast your box can boot.
You can get this error if your DVD-ROM drive has some issue with regard to sensing its tray-state. Phillips drives were most prone to that exact issue.
we miss you frank
Unfortunately at the time of me writing this, the Startech adapters seem to be in short supply in the UK so I went for a generic one off of Amazon and it didn't work. The one in your video with the two large electrolytic capacitors don't seem to be very commonly available here now.
Yeah I could have warned you not to buy the ones off Amazon the ones on eBay with the ones I ordered. Always seem to work pretty good for me but you should always test it and run them for a minimum of at least an hour or two to make sure that they're good
we are hitting a capacitor shortage so that's not surprising
Chinese IDE to Sata adapter will boot with 80 wire ide cable but it doesn't work with 40 wire ide cable
Yes and even if it did you have the chance of losing data. No matter which adapter you use you need an 80 pin
I brought 2 of those Chinese converters from amazon, and both failed miserably. The light shows up on the converter but the Hard drive doesn't boot for some reason? I noticed that both converter's capacitors seemed to be slightly lifted from the board and lopsided, but maybe there's also other issues. Anyway I might give those Startech ones a try, they look pretty reliable albeit a bit expensive.
The ones you get off Amazon are complete garbage HDE brand or something like this I do not recommend it . The ones off eBay JP 1035 this code always Work very well I'd say 80% of the delivery Was perfect
@@Retroprofrank is there a way to find one on eBay with that code specifically, because I have been looking around and none of the ones sold say in the description what code they are selling? I live in Uk if that helps.
@@jupiterapollo4985 Message the supplier directly Look for that number somewhere on the board
@@Retroprofrank Alright, thanks for the information and the helpful video 👍
Hey I'm late to the party but what kinda of ( tape ) are you using to protect from shorting out.
I say exactly in the video
About 3 or 4 layers of electrical tape on the back of the drive itself before you attach the adapter works.
What kind of tape or foam are you using on the backside of the board to buffer between the hard drive? I have electrical tape but it doesn't look as solid as yours.
I just use double-sided foam tape. May take a couple layers to fill in the gap. But yes is more sturdy than electrical tape and more safe. Last thing you need is for the Molex connector to touch the hard drive.. if that happens I can fry out the entire system
@@Retroprofrank thanks! Where do you get it from? Any suggestions on what to search for? I wasnt sure what type to get.
@@agibby5 pretty sure Amazon should have it just search double-sided foam tape
@@Retroprofrank I found a few locally. What size did you buy? I see 1/2in, 3/4in and 1inch. Thoughts?
@@agibby5 off the top of my head have no idea. Inch? You can always cut it down but you can't make more of something that's not there. Have a good day
Do you need to buy an 80 pin cable for either or is the original 40 pin cable okay?
80pin all day bro!!
@@Retroprofrank Thanks!
How do you get the startech to work? does it work with SSD's?
We can literally be having a conversation 6 months back and forth I'm sorry I don't have that kind of time startech works fine maybe you have a faulty adapter or something I would contact them if you're having any problems
i timed mine it was on average about 1min 13 seconds. , but i am using avalaunch, and a 2TB. i stop the timer when avalunch has fully generated its litsts from data from the hard drive and it seems very slow.
Avalanches is terrible you're probably the last person in the world using that OS
@@Retroprofrank lol i suspected as much. what do you think about my boot times? above i said about 1min 13 seconds for a 2TB (WD2002FYPS Western Digital 2TB 5.4K RPM 3Gb/s 64MB Cache black label ) (dang it i just saw that rpm) soft modd setup using a chinese adapter. tonight i used a 320sata using the same chinese adapter and its about 37 seconds total, also my 400GB and smaller ide drives boot in probably less than 10 seconds, but i guess should time this too also, side note, i used to mod things things daily, like so much i am probably on some list. i work in IT, but i havent touched my old xboxs in 15 years until recently. i remember everyone liked evox, but even though it was prettier i prefered the plain but very functional ava launch, whats everyone using these days? but more importantly do you have any opinions on my slow boot times. also loading games is slow, launching halo2 from the hdd takes way too long, maybe 40 seconds before the guitar music at the very beginning plays, but on my 320GB sata drive its only about 5 seconds and feels almost instant, i guess i need to time it. thanks for your input, channels like yours are helping me remember the glory days and bring them back!!
@@Retroprofrank
Ava is a great dash, it also has many safety features like dumping the EEPROM on boot that and telnet support and the best FTP that other dashboards dont have which obviously takes time. Its a trade off, speed for features.
Frank what also works well are the same type cards also the color is correct are of brand Renkforce, German brand very quickly I start no more green cards, some do not start quickly enough, that's why not in every Xbox works because the xbox not so long wait, you get bv error code 7 or other
so you get a quick boot with Renkforce adapter?
@@cr4zyw3ld3r
yes I am very satisfied with the Reckforce adapter for the xbox, and it is faster than the Chinese junk that remains a gamble even though the Chinese variant works the Reckforce is faster, I tested 4 of the same cheap brand 1 only worked.
the cheap variants wait too long at a cold start (boot) and the xbox wants a signal earlier, it does not get that, the adapter does not work.
cheap is expensive buy Reckforce is more expensive but worth it if you love your xbox. Suc6
@@cr4zyw3ld3r forget something use an 80 pin hdd cable.
important
Have you messed around with using a SSD instead of HDD for these?
Yes but there's really no point you're limited by the bus speed of the overall motherboard. Not worth it
@@Retroprofrank true true, thanks for the reply Frank
@@Retroprofrank personally I love the weight savings and quietness of the SSD for my usecase and if I decide to do the slim mod this is also a huge help. Yeah there is no TRIM support so it will die faster but just off those two things alone its been worth it. However I have found that HDDs seem to in general be faster with the stock bios in XBMC. Have not tried flashing another bios to test. I have the startech adapter in my box and it seems to boot it a good 10sec faster than my brother's xbox and he has the green chinese adapter.
Could you do a boot time vid comparing a hdd and ssd?
Literally no difference. The problem is the overall bus speed of the motherboard. Not worth putting an SSD in my opinion
@@Retroprofrank Oh thats surprising even on old ide laptops ive seen improvements, thankyou. Also my mums getting me an xbox for christmas is it worth getting a modchip aswell or should I just tsop flash it?
@@NO_obs SSDs will really only improve indexing times in emulators like MAME or CoinOps. Won't notice a serious boost once all that work is done.
The adapter boards are pretty basic, so the quality isn't a huge deal. What matters is what controller they have, as some may not work with the retail Xbox kernel.
You can read all the comments here tons of people said they don't see any difference it's not worth the extra $20. But ultimately that's up to you
@@Retroprofrank Well from a technical standpoint, the OG xbox kernel can only use UDMA1, which some of these adapters may struggle with due to being made for use in computers that use higher speed versions. My theory on the slower speeds is that the chip forces its clockspeed to be lower to match the 33mbps UDMA1 speed, but doesn't natively support it and thus is slower than native UDMA1
Green one sorry
I got a startech one under $20 on amazon
Ya and i can get 10 of them for that price..just sayin'
My friends SSD don't work right loading. The problem is the 60 pin IDE cable has a max speed of 133mbps and his PNY SSD is too fast. It cant process threw the wires fast enough. I would install a 2TB 128MB cache speed HDD and with the IDE cable it should run as fast as possible. If you want a SSD look at ScanDisk because it has 150mbps speed on average. Cheaper SSDs are slower. You want a slow SSD for the Xbox with a IDE cable. I got 4 Xboxs modified. Don't put the fastest SSD in it. Also HDDs last longer than a SSD. Some SSDs last 30 days. And we have working HDDs from the 90s.
Not to mention some (but not all) SSDs require the 3.3V power from a genuine SATA power connector. Adapters don't supply 3.3v at all as even notebook HDDs never needed it.
same performance, as i suspected...
Xbox one boot not 360. I like the video though.
Oh that's right that's the Xbox one screen. Sorry I had so much to worry about while I was making the video thank you
As long as it works who cares.
You showed that Startech is about 6-7% faster (2.85 seconds) with a few percent margin of error, in regard to throughput when booting XBMC and they are 100% reliable.
The cheaper ones are about 1/5 or 1/6 of the cost and between 5-10% slower with high odds of getting a dud or two in your batch. (which actually increases the cost of those. If you bought a batch of 10 at $5.00/each and got 2 bad ones... you wasted 10 dollars or 1/5 of your money. Sure you still saved but you have to look at it that way.
Most people are only building 1 xbox. If they are building more than one, they are selling pirated software and will probably go to prison soon anyways. ;) Get the startech. You'll always be glad you did.
Lol... yeah that's pretty funny.. in his video I was just showing the boot times. I own both startech and JP 103 5. Just thought it was a good bunch of bored out of what is available you are right with getting a couple Duds out of a pack of 10 does raise the price never thought about that. If you want the absolute best and fastest for sure best way to go is StarTek. But some people can't afford the stuff either. It's a catch-22. Thanks for your comment
I don't have to look very close and I can already see the terrible soldering job done on the Chinese ones.
I will say one thing they're doing pretty good considering their 5% the cost of the competition... I've been using 1 for over two and a half years now not an issue
