All people participated in slavery. All people have been slaves. You could still buy White slaves as late as 1908 in the Ottoman Empire. African blacks and Arabs had slave trades much bigger and far more cruel than the Atlantic slave trade. Arabs would castrate their black slaves, most didn't survive. A greater percentage of blacks and Natives owned black slaves in the USA than Whites.
Before White people stopped it, slavery was practiced all over the world without a thought, it was a normal aspect of life. I know you're too racist to give White people any credit for any good deeds, but that doesn't matter, stopping slavery was one of the most moral and selfless acts any people have ever done, and it makes me proud to be WHite.

"African blacks and Arabs had slave trades much bigger and far more cruel than the Atlantic slave trade."
So, that's like saying it's better to have lung cancer than aids... i always see this attempt at fallacy, where people try and excuse the severity of one by comparing it to another...slavery is slavery, no matter how cruel or not, slavery is slavery, the purpose is that you are nothing and or belong to someone else, that your worth and life is in the hands of those who consider you no more than an asset or property, all forms of it are demeaning human rights violations.
"A greater percentage of blacks and Natives owned black slaves in the USA than Whites."
      Stats?
not too mention the blacks who owned blacks in the states were the same as the what the dutch/Belgians did in Rwanda, they chose the people with defining features (Tutsi) and made them their slave master class, a middle class to govern, oppress and help them run the rest of the population, and of course we saw how well that worked out for Rwanda didn't we?
"Before White people stopped it, slavery was practiced all over the world without a thought, it was a normal aspect of life."
Still is again in Africa, Asia, Middle east, South America, east Balkans, the whites only stopped it in their countries, and actually many of them only did so after the market went down do to over saturation and abundance.
The civil war was not fought to end slavery, in fact the emancipation proclamation and the 13th amendment were more beneficial pluses to the war, they were not the cause and or the the plan, this is all well documented by the way. Lincoln saw an opportunity during the war to cut off the south's main economic factor-free labor, and saw the opportunity when it presided itself for the 13th amendment, side effects only.
"I know you're too racist to give White people any credit for any good deeds, but that doesn't matter, stopping slavery was one of the most moral and selfless acts any people have ever done, and it makes me proud to be WHite."
First off nice flip fallacy by calling me racist, as for giving white's credit for good deeds, why do whites alone get all the credit? no one other than whites ever opposed, campaigned and or fought agaisnt slavery? the whites did it all alone?
Of course the whites who went agaisnt slavery deserve credit, but they weren't the only ones, and to act like slavery just ended becasue whites got involved is a lie, as i said it's still practiced in various forms globally.
i don't get the point in being proud to be white, proud to be black, etc. who gives a fucking shit?!!!!
I don't see the world in race, race is merely a social construct we ass scratching primates created based on phenotype characteristics, the only race that matters is the human race and whether or not you can be proud to be human given how much fucking shit we do on a daily basis is the more apt question.

Way late to this party, but I think the issue is 'moderate' is a poor descriptor. One could say that Hillary Clinton was the moderate vs. Progressive Sanders. But it was Hillary's camp that banked on identity politics the hardest particularly in terms of gender and race. It was on Maher's own show that Gloria Steinem basically slandered young women as being trivial and lacking seriousness because they supported Sanders over Hillary. "That's where the boys are."
I'm more inclined to make an appeal to rational, reasonable people that to loaded political terms.

I took a totally different point from this video than a lot of this comments section. White men in the U.S enjoy privilege (Bill Maher said exactly that at about 4:30), but being consistently self-deprecating for the sake of any minorities who might be watching isn't going to help. If you actually want to do something, vote for public officials who'll stop supporting the drug war and unnecessary incarceration of black men. Stop supporting businesses and organizations that profit off of the labor of underpaid minorities. Start taking concrete action instead of being fake-remorseful.
I don't think Maher's saying that reverse racism is America's biggest problem and that white men have it just as bad as anyone else. I think he's saying that if you actually want to do something, self-flagellating for the sake of some kudos from your one ethnic friend is a stupid way to go about it.

Bloom County Actually, no. If you'll read my original comment, you'll notice that I mentioned drugs specifically. There is a documented racial disparity when it comes to who is more likely to be incarcerated for drug-related crimes. Most races do drugs at equal rates (in fact, white people are more likely to deal drugs than black people), but black people are jailed disproportionately for them. This isn't something I've concocted as a justification for my feelings; this is a point of view driven entirely by the statistics, some of which you can see here: www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2014/09/30/white-people-are-more-likely-to-deal-drugs-but-black-people-are-more-likely-to-get-arrested-for-it/
It's interesting that you bring up gender, because there's also evidence that men may receive longer prison terms and be less likely to avoid incarceration than women, even when committing the same crime. This doesn't mean law enforcement officials should stop arresting or incarcerating men, but it does seem unfair to me that two people who commit the same crime will face different consequences depending on their gender. www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/11/men-women-prison-sentence-length-gender-gap_n_1874742.html
I never said that we should make sure that all prison populations should have a particular racial or gender composition, but I do find it interesting that even when committing the same number and kind of crimes, black people seem to face harsher penalties. Considering how negatively-disposed you seem to be towards emotion, you seem very upset about this. I'm not sure what made you this bitter or angry, but I hope that whatever it was, you feel better soon.

    • @NaomiMiller5
      @NaomiMiller5 Před 8 lety +2

Bloom County First off, let me just comment on how hilarious it is that you claim Maher has "doesn't commit crimes" privilege, considering his life story. He's been very open about selling pot in college, long before it was legal in his state. He paid for college by committing crimes, and now he has a television show. I personally don't see selling pot as a moral lapse, so I don't mind, but I'm surprised that someone like yourself still watches his show. I'd expect you to want him imprisoned.
None of this addressed my original point, which is that two people who make the same "poor decision" are likely to be punished unequally depending on their race. Are you supporting that? Do you believe that some people who make "bad choices" should remain unaffected because they were born white or female? Receiving a different sentence due to your race, an inherent quality you have based on luck, is a privilege. I think that anyone who's genuinely concerned with accountability and facing the consequences of their actions should make sure all consequences are equally enforced.
I didn't mention anything about low-income people or teen moms, so I'm not sure where you're getting that from either. Also not sure why you think I'm suburban or white (I'm neither), or that I haven't spent any time around low-income people. You seem to be making a lot of false assumptions about me, and you also seem to be assuming some things about people who find themselves in dire straits. Just because you've met some felons or poor people you dislike doesn't mean those people are representative of all felons or poor people. You seem a little vindictive about this.

    • @NaomiMiller5
      @NaomiMiller5 Před 8 lety +1

Bloom County Murderers should obviously be imprisoned, but the issues you're describing aren't caused by institutional racism against white people or for black people. It's not the government enforcing that kind of prejudice, but a social phenomenon that isn't caused or perpetuated by the government. Unequal drug sentencing (which was the issue I was trying to talk about, not murder) is a different matter. And since you still haven't addressed it: do you believe Bill Maher should be imprisoned? The numbers of black and brown men currently in prison for low-level drug offenses is something I personally find heinous. If you think it's reasonable to incarcerate someone for most of their adult life over a possession or distribution charge, then that's your stance, but if you refuse to apply it equally to everyone, you're being motivated by prejudice.
You're making a lot of false assumptions about me. For starters, I'm not white (I laughed a little bit at your 'white supremacist' comment). I grew up in a lower-income household (I see lower-income people every Christmas, as opposed to never, as you seem to believe). Many if not most of my friends from the area where I grew up have been arrested for drug charges, and one of them spent time in prison for them. I've seen how drug policy in the United States is excessive and plagued by racial and gender disparities, and personally, it makes me a little sick. If you believe drug offenses should carry lifetime prison sentences, then that's your prerogative, but to argue that they should be enforced unequally is biased and unfair. If that's your stance, fine - just don't pretend I'm someone I'm not because you're desperate to ignore my point.
I agree with the first sentence of your last paragraph. People should deal with the positive or negative consequences of their choices. The issue in this case, however, is that despite making the same choice (to deal or use drugs), white and black people are likely to face different consequences under the law.
You're clearly very upset and if you're going to call me a racist (again, despite the fact that I'm nonwhite and couldn't be a white supremacist if I tried), I think it's better off if I end this conversation here. Have a good one.

It is because I now live in a place where people are freaked out because they see a person of another color, or someone who is bilingual and has an accent, different religion, etc. The area hardly changed for so many years until recently and was like a time capsule. Sometimes it sucks to live in a place where the people had spent so much time in their own insular bubble. BTW, I moved for job reasons and originally grew up in Detroit. What's "classic liberalism" --- our politics have moved far to the right over the last 40 years. No right wingers are not liberals. It's just convenient to say that the left is too far left and the right is the left. But just the opposite is true. The fact that some people say and do stupid things is not unique to the left. The fact that conservatives are becoming more liberal just means they are becoming more liberal --- and the left going more left doesn't mean they are wrong people just don't understand the difference between being sensitive and being a socialist or left on policy issues

That's when it really came up: combination of cultural criticism media becoming very single-minded and insular, a wave of postmodern academic politics getting another mainstream run, social media, and clickbait. Hence you get the social shaming and the cultural appropriation and the no-platforming and all this nonsense.
I remember in 2013 it seemed like I was a crazy person for hating this stuff, but the last year or so has been awesome in terms of pushback. "SJW" going mainstream is great; ridiculous college protests are getting noticed and mocked; people like Dave Rubin (who is becoming a bit more right-wing lately but follow my point) have opened up a space for criticizing this kind of thing and have found an audience.

Bill almost hit the nail on the head discussion privilege, but still missed by a bit. The reason that most of the sane world hates that term is because it is WRONG! The problem is not that most white people are "privileged", it is that many others are not being treated properly.
Being treated reasonably fairly in life is a right, not a privilege - so it pisses off the majority of people who have never gotten more than they deserve to be called "privileged". I sympathize with and want to help people who are not being treated as they should be, and there are far too many of them - we call that "discrimination" and it's a real thing!
Is a child whose father does NOT beat him "privileged" because some people's father DO beat them? NO! One is having a normal life, and one is being abused!
If these moronic SJWs really cared about achieving anything, they would get rid of that stupid concept - but they need it to feed (as Bill said) their own narcissistic desire to pretend to feel guilty for not being discriminated against.

"I can't tell who's more annoying: conservatives who don't care about anyone who isn't white or liberals who hate themselves because they are white. There's gotta be some sweet spot between the PC police and the Baltimore police."
    Gauntlet laid.
There's a somewhat tangential moment at the end I part ways with, though: I don't agree with the simple solution to transgender issues and restrooms, if for no other reason than that I think for every peeping tom jeopardizing the liberty of others in the women's, there's a trans man in the men's who's jeopardizing his own life just to take a piss. A full solution will involve either gender-neutral facilities, more private stalls, or else just a cultural shift towards gender-fluid indifference about who's around you when you drop trou. But luckily this flourish of Maher's was more or less an obiter dictum tacked onto the end, probably having something to do with his lingering befuddlement over Caitlin Jenner and how her transition won her instant approval among many liberals, effectively shielding her from any criticism, however legitimate, of her politics and even her character. That ceasefire of last summer is mostly over, after jumping the shark at the ESPY awards, but for some reason it's still sticking in Maher's craw.
Oh well, nearly everything else I agree with. There's got to be some middle ground where smart people of good will can try to raise awareness of the unfortunate parts of any and all cultures, and where these criticisms can be evaluated on their merit instead of reflexively being labelled virtuous if directed at whites, and racist if directed anywhere else.
I hope Maher doesn't go anywhere anytime soon, else I too will have to buy a bumper sticker that tells everyone behind me just how much I miss Bill.
