    I was born with a disability (cerebral palsy) and I have spent my entire life fighting for educational and professional acceptance, ultimately succeeding as a jurist and businessperson. I think this whole absurd modern criticism of being “able-bodied” is insane, and profoundly cheapens my experience. If I were to just accept my disabled body as “just a different kind of normal” or other such bunkum, I would never have cared about wanting to improve myself!
    Is the very concept of self-improvement to be demonized now, because some people just want to wallow in their problems and deny that they are even problems, and not give a flying fig because “we are all good enough already”?!?!?
    Jeebus, what a giant crock!!! No wonder there are so many people in my generation, with perfectly formed brains and bodies, who still live in their parents’ basements at age forty, with no education, no work experience, and no ambition to obtain either!

      Bill Maher you are so gross . No human is physically ugly just because other humans don’t find them attractive , or just because that person does not reach conventional standards. My taste isn’t aligned with the conventional standards or what members of society decided . “ better looking “ , who is better looking ? Like some countries believe that light skin is the attractive beauty ideal and now more people are changing that , Back then “ curves” weren’t trendy and were considered fat , not so long ago - big lips were actually considered ugly and black American women were actually teased for it . Someone is better looking because someone is your personal taste ? Someone is “ beautiful “ because they happen to attract you ? I’ve never my entire life used the word “ beauty “ on another human ... based on aesthetic features. Many instances where genuinely someone may reach the standards of parts of society and I genuinely feel nothing and have a Total different taste . I don’t define or rule anyone out based on that . Because of your opinion - we are supposed to decide who is above others ? Because someone ain’t your taste or because you aren’t attracted to someone , they become ugly ? We use the term ugly , when we refer to garbage or a an ugly act . Yet you think it’s okay to refer to humans who are of a different colour , difference face shape , body shape - as ugly ? We call an innocent that didn’t commit an ugly as ugly ? How is that okay ? Many children report to actually be bullied ,mostly due to comments about appearance .. yet we want to pretend like it’s science and biology to bully adults and view them in an ugly way ? Based on their god given aesthetics ? We can say that someone doesn’t attract many people conventionally - that’s fine . But understand that your shallow view of them does not define them. It’s not nature, biological or scientific ( like they try to convince you ) that some people are ruled as ugly - because their aesthetics are different . Do you even know what ugly is ? So many people and especially women have so many eating disorders , self worth and self image issues - because they are discriminated against for not looking a Certain way , because they are mistreated for not looking a certain way and are viewed in a disgusting way , why ? Because they are disgusting ? Because they did something disgusting ? No . Because they have their own beautiful unique facial features and body shape . There is a minority of people who don’t find the people you call ugly as ugly . There are some people in the world that aren’t attracted to the people you say are the only “ beautiful “ people . Many humans can not live with themselves .. knowing that they are viewed as ugly . Maybe instead of telling people to accept mistreatment , bullying, discrimination and accept that who society deems as physically attractive is above you and that’s “ above you “ - teach people that the “ better looking “ isn’t based off of your perception that changes even with the trends and popularity .

    "The answer isn't to insist that everyone in society love you exactly the way you are, it's to learn to tell the ones who don't that you don't need them." A great point, brilliantly stated and also a far more empowering position to be in. I am certainly not what mainstream society considers cool or beautiful but I am a lot of other things that are of value which I have come to recognize. If I wait for everyone else to get it I will be waiting a long time and that is time that no one has. We also need to get over this idea that people and the art they create must be everything to everyone. Support what you love but don't be so insecure that everything that exists outside of what you want to see is some kind of threat. I enjoyed this movie, I enjoyed black panther and I enjoy Ken Burns documentaries. They were all great and did what they set out to do. You can support the causes you care about without trying to make everything fit a particular mold. Your point of view can be valid valid without it being the only point of view. Successful comedians certainly understand this.

    I'm a liberal and I totally agree with Bill on this. I get that liberals, especially younger ones, want to be sensitive to the feelings of others. But lord this is becoming a solution in search of a problem. Both extremes, right and left have become parodies of themselves and common sense has gone out of the window. There are real issues that need addressing, a middling Amy Schumer comedy is not one of them.

      I think the problem on both sides is this simplistic, black-and-white thinking that has become the norm in America. Everything has to be either irredeemably evil or completely wonderful, and there is no room for nuanced debate. If an opinion can't fit into a soundbite, it won't be heard. The difference is that conservatives tend to use physical violence to express their displeasure, while liberals say something nasty on twitter.

    • @DonnaBrooks
      @DonnaBrooks Před 2 lety

      @@kitcoffey7194 Gluten free toast and PLANT-BASED spread. Margarine is bad for you. Or how about just going all the way & calling it "gluten free toast w/ avocado spread"? All mocking aside, today's "liberals" have lost much of the United States b/c of divisive, EXCLUSIVE identity politics. If the Left focused on things they USED to focus on,- labor issues & the environment (not just global warming),- they would be talking about issues that bring people together based on common concerns, which helps to unite people. This emphasis on what makes us different does not promote understanding. It just makes people sick of hearing about the concerns of particular populations while large swaths of people are ignored. I'm not just talking about white people, either. Black people have always taken all the attention when talking about race, when there are terrible problems faced by Native Americans (extreme poverty, alcoholism, domestic violence) that never get any attention, even now. Martin Luther King, Jr. & Bobby Kennedy understood this & they worked with ALL poor people to unite them & address their common issues & it got them killed. Now we have a generation of people that fall apart if they aren't protected from having their opt-in imaginary oppression (this is particularly true re "trans" issues, which has morphed into a term that no longer has any meaning e.g. "a trans people is anyone who says they are trans," & is at odds with LGB people & women) put into perspective in the larger context of progress & history. Meanwhile, species are going extinct at 1,000x the usual rate b/c humans have become our own asteroid, biodiversity is collapsing, & we are losing beautiful & fascinating species & ecosystems b/c people don't give a shit about the only home we ALL have & its ability to sustain life. Serious issues affecting billions of people, like making universal family planning & free contraception available for everyone & the education of girls & women,- 2 things that would DRAMATICALLY improve the quality of life for poor people around the world, would lower the population & decrease the human footprint on natural resources, & would help women provide for their families, while also creating economic opportunities that don't rely on the exploitation of children & MODERN-DAY SLAVE LABOR & the destruction of the natural world. That's what we should have spent trillions of dollars on instead of squandering our treasure on wars & military occupations.

    • @DonnaBrooks
      @DonnaBrooks Před 2 lety +2

      @@VarnaVix It's more than saying something nasty on Twitter! Try saying something like, "Men are not women," or, "women need spaces free of male-bodied people," & you will be deluged with hate from the Left trans demands activists who will try to get people fired by harassing their employer, will get people THROWN OFF Twitter for what these snowflakes call "hate speech" (saying the definition of a woman is, "Adult human female" is considered hate speech in silicon valley), they go after their employers to try to get people fired, they have a huge misinformation campaign about what someone said (like JK Rowling) & all the bobbleheaded SJWs pass along the hate for her & others w/o ever actually reading or considering what she/they said. There is a STRONG authoritarian movement on the Left. And women HAVE been assaulted by trans demands activists for standing up for the rights of biological women (not men who say they are women b/c of some vague "gender identity". Regarding race, Antifa & the people who took over the BLM movement in Portland harrassed people on the streets (I've seen videos) & there were riots, destroying public & private property & intimidating people, for 100 straight nights before the mayor finally cracked down on it. Some on the Left just want to tear everything down (statues of Lincoln & Grant, the legacy of Susan B. Anthony, etc. for not passing the purity test) or take over what others have built (men taking over women's spaces, sports, & services by simply claiming they are women,- including sex offenders being placed in women's prisons, & male-bodied people in domestic violence shelters & rape crisis centers & if you don't let men in, these hateful people will shut you down, go after your funding, etc.). They aren't interested in building anything. Women worked for a century to get the spaces, services, & sports that gave them opportunities & safety from men who ARE physically stronger (which is why the overwhelming majority of rapes is men raping or assaulting women, not the other way around), but now men just want to claim them for their own by saying they are women & the idiots on the Left support this & are applauded for it! Instead of building services for trans people, they want to force themselves on women. That's something MEN do, not women. It's a men's "rights" movement in dressed up as a civil rights issue & the Left will throw LGB people, women, & children under the bus to protect these poor, defenseless men from being deprived of the right to show their penises to women & girls & to make women & girls uncomfortable.
      However, what you said about simplistic thinking on both Left & Right is true, and how everything is communicated in soundbites & tweets & there is no nuanced debate or real discussion of issues. The way big tech companies drive us into our information bubbles further makes communication,- or even awareness of reality outside our bubble,- impossible to believe or even comprehend. The dichotomy of you are either pure in every word & thought i.e. part of the CULT,- or you are evil, is true on both the Left & Right.
      We have 2 massive, authoritarian political cults in the U.S. today (and in many western countries, but it's really pronounced here with the Trump cult on the Right & the identity politics cult on the Left), with people being sent down rabbitholes of radicalization & polarization by Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit, Facebook, CZcams, & other social media. I honestly don't know how we are going to get out of this. Big Tech, which includes the most powerful & influential businesses in history, is not on the side of truth & reason. They sell an addiction more widespread than that of the tobacco industry & they are as ubiquitous & seen as indispensable as the fossil fuel industry. Outraged people stay on their platforms sharing the latest hate posts about how awful someone is. Outrage generates clicks & Likes & sharing far more than do posts encouraging nuanced thought, facts, reason, & understanding of the concerns of reasonable people. Humans are emotionally driven and the bombardment of social media content rachets up the emotions. We never evolved to handle so many people & so much information coming at us with such speed. Was it Mark Twain that said something like, "A lie can travel around the world before the truth has even put its shoes on," or some facsimile thereof? And that was a century ago when communication was much slower. Confirmation bias is EASY; it's the lazy person's way of navigating a complex world because mental effort is exhausting. Facing reality is mentally laborious. It's far easier to just keep reinforcing what you already believe & WANT to believe.

That said, conservatives should note--and Bill spends most of the rest of his time pointing this out--that conservatism of the past 30 years is also rooted in victimhood and snowflakery. For example, getting up in arms when a cashier at Rite Aid doesn't say "Merry Christmas" or whining about baking gay couples a wedding cake or moaning about how "librul elites" sometimes call out their behavior. Our entire society is built around victimhood and various shades of political correctness. The right is not immune.

I'm getting "older", and I end up blinking for a second when I hear how casually some "older" people are accused of being "senile", etc., when the fact is that they're just stupid and always have been. (Did you just hear Maher, in his monologue, joke about Trump and Guilliani being "senile"? And, yet, Maher is no spring chicken himself).
      And, on a more serious note, try being 50, getting laid off from your job, and finding another one that pays as well.
      It's happening daily across the country. Businesses want "youth" because they feel they present a better image AND they can pay them less. Plus, they believe that ALL older people are too "set in their ways" and have no interest in seeing them first as individuals rather than one homogenous group.
      But, to get back to your point, discriminating against people because of their (older) age is quite acceptable. And, young liberals/progressives are just as guilty---if not more so---than conservatives. (I'm a liberal).

    I'm very progressive, and as a committed Leftist myself, we have to stop turning on each other. Amy Schumer used to be the icon of feminism, and people would defend her at the slightest insult. But now you turn your backs on her because of a fucking movie? We have a problem on the Left, and it has nothing to do with movies or Amy Schumer. It has to do with RESPECT! Let's look out for each other, and unseat all of the Republicans come this fall and later in years.

    "...except when Eddie Murphy did it, he didn't have the purity police up his ass."
    Actually, he did. Even back then, there was a nontroversy before and after the movie came out from overweight folks who felt the film was insensitive, fat-shaming and made too many jokes at the expense of fat people. Never mind the film's end goal and message, where Sherman is loved and accepted as he is. It wasn't enough for some people who just don't know what to do with themselves if they don't have something to be mad about. Same with Shallow Hal.
    Point is, this is nothing new. It just feels like it is because now we have social media, so we're being exposed to it more often.

    He isn't a politician, he doesn't need the support of the party, and it's amazing how I'm thinking the same thing before I hear him say it. He has a more balanced view partly because he listens to conservatives. also he has a staff of people who can check out claims and find out if they are true. Young people see something on the internet and immediately think it is true. That's dangerous. Keep up the good work Bill.
