Jersey is an English island just off the coast of France, and I'm quite sure that, being foreigners, they don't call New Jersey "Jersey".
I'm struggling to figure out if Bill knew that the reference is to the Channel Island, and just didn't care, or if he actually didn't know.

Anders Püschel the setup to the joke is literally just to push the joke along... it doesn't insinuate that the joke writers think its actually referring to NJ

As a German I found that really funny. Two things though: Italian women hardly get babies anymore and Italians are going even faster extinct than the Germans. Secondly, the French had a hard time getting their resistance up because the German army rolled through Belgium, which was a neutral country, against international law. Also they lacked the technology, not bravery.

The Pope and the Vatican are good sports, we must admit it. they've been getting heavy jokes for years and accepting them.
That's almost as much bullshit as you could ever find. When you think about it, all good ideas have started out as blasphemes. That group has been banning everything right from the beginning. The reason they seem to mostly leave this type of comedy alone is that the comedy had to be true to be funny, which it was. When the Pope and the Vatican come up against real truth, sometimes they actually don't say anything about it. Similar to how they try to hide most of the abuse they have done to children and families, within the Church and out in the world. Not allowing anybody to use birth control - how much death and destruction do you figure that's caused?
