Beginner Canoe Fishing: Will we catch fish, or flip?

  • This is part 2 of our Backbone State Park camp and fish, and Vivian and I decided to rent a canoe for a few hours and see if we can catch a few fish out of it. I packed light and brought some of our less expensive gear in case we flipped. And I only took one go pro in case the worst happened. We can set the go pro up to be waterproof, but it makes for very bad audio, so I opted to leave the mic in and the GoPro open to the elements.
Since I knew a few trout streams fed into this lake, I brought two light-duty rods and reels with 4lb line, and only one heavier set-up with 30 lb braid. We underestimated the size of the first few fish we hooked into with 4 lb line and had difficulty landing them in the canoe.
Later I switched to the 30 lb set-up and we started landing some decent fish.
Overall a really solid outing. I think we will be getting some sort of kayak next year. Not sure what, yet, though.

We had a lot of fun. And didn't flip! Getting a boat for next year is at the top of our priority list :)

Ah yes the chaos that comes with fishing out of a little watercraft. Looks like you guys had fun.

We really did! This would be a pretty interesting lake/river to take your Hobie up to. The lake part is very silted in, only about only about 2-3 ft deep near the boat ramp. Then as you go up lake toward the river it deepens and meets up with some clear trout streams that feed it. The fish didn't seem pressured at all. Lots of fun.

@@teamcramerfishing8441 interesting, that's quite the haul with the kayak haha. do you know if there's any trout that make it into the lake?

I would say not in the main part of the lake, but maybe where the creeks transition to the lake. We didn't paddle up that far and fish but when we were hiking I could look down on that transition area and it was semi-clear water and a little deeper than the feeder stream. I thought it looked juicy. Maybe next year I'll paddle up there and fish it and find out for sure.

If I had a kayak and I was heading up to NE Iowa, I would hit the Upper Iowa River. I've canoed it a dozen times, but never fished it. Next year it is high on my list as well to fish from a kayak. Lots of different types of fish we don't find as much in central Iowa like trout and big smallmouth, probably walleye too. Absolutely stunning scenery. I've done the stretch from Kendleville to Bluffton several times, but haven't done it from Decorah to the Mississippi River, yet. I'll make sure to give you a heads up if we go next year. I think it would be good in mid-June through the summer, when some of the spawns down here are finishing up and the spring rains have slowed down.

I love fishing from a canoe, some of my best memories are on the old gal sitting in my back yard right now. I actually feel better in a canoe than I do in the yaks I have I ridden...way more space and I don't feel like I'm in a plastic coffin. lol.

They are very roomy. It's hard to get the best of everything in a canoe/yak. I've been trying to figure out what will be best for us.

Really nice video. I love fishing from a canoe, it's about as 'zen' as it gets :)
I'd recommend picking up a lightweight mushroom style anchor. It helps to keep from getting pulled into the brush when you have a fish on.
    and Congrats on getting monetized!!

Thanks. It was easier than one would have thought for the fish to pull us around. Getting an anchor is a great idea when we get a boat of our own (hopefully next year).
It's funny, this is actually the 3rd time we've been monetized. We started out monetized, then youtube changed their standards and we were demonetized. Then we met those standards and were remonetized. Then they changed them again. I never really went out looking for subs for the channel, I always wanted subs who would actually watch the videos. So, we easily met the watchtime criteria, but I think we only had 700 subs or something when they changed the rules. Then in 2018 I started a new business and I didn't have as much time for the channel. So, it's been a long haul, but we are back in a good groove again. We just started our 4th year with the channel, and I think this will be the best year yet! Lot's of cool stuff planned.

@@teamcramerfishing8441 My channel was the same. Monetized, then demonetized when the rules changed, then WAY more view time than required but it took two years to get enough subs. Crazy

I was surprised your boat builds hadn't gotten more views when I watched them. But you never know what people are going to watch. That's why it's always best to just do the stuff you like doing the most. (And who knows? Maybe the Googans will try to build a boat and the mighty youtube AI will start pushing out those vids someday.)

It was fun while it last :) We mostly came rigged for smaller fish, and less cover.
