Exploring A Spillway For New Species (Backbone State Park: Camp & Fish Part 3)

  • This video is of our last day fishing during our Backbone State Park camp and fish. In this video we split up and I explored one of the spillways that comes off of the lake. I wasn't sure how safe the spillway was for the kids so I went up alone while they fished the creek downstream. This was actually a fairly tough fishing outing and the bite wasn't exactly hot. Additionally, some rain was moving in so it was cut short. Interestingly, Vivian and I each ended up catching a new species that were different from one another, but we weren't certain about whether we had, so we didn't swap spots to try to catch another new species each. We will certainly return to Backbone again now that we know some of the spots to target new species. Vivian could easily land a Brook Trout and Golden Redhorse, which she needs, and I could catch the Hornyhead Chub and Southern Redbelly Dace, which Vivian caught. Needless to say, we will be back!

Thanks, Dennis! I hope is we can get back up there and get some better photos and videos, and catch a few more now that we know what we are dealing with :) I'm pretty decent at identifying species after I have caught them once or twice. Not so great when it's something I haven't seen before.

Yeah, this is a fantastic state park. Huge camping spots, awesome trout streams, a fun little lake, and lots of different species of fish to catch. We will definitely be back!

You guys got a good bag of fish from that trip! I am positive the second redhorse is a shorthead redhorse by the shape of the head and lips, but the first looks to be a golden or black redhorse since the dorsal fin doesn't look to be curved outwards.

Yeah, I didn't get as good of video or pics of them as I should have, but I was standing in the water and fishing a tiny corner of that spillway because there were two guys fishing from over that fence and they were casting about 3/4 worth of the water and I didn't want to cross their lines since they were there first. I was able to blow up the footage and pause it to get a better look at the tail fin and dorsal fin, and also do some research on what species are in this watershed and I'm about 95% sure it's a golden redhorse. We'll definitely go back here and fish again, hopefully be able to take more time, film a little better. But it's about 2.5 hours from home, so a bit of a drive.

@@teamcramerfishing8441 Yeah, redhorse can be a pain to ID sometimes, especially black and goldens, but I think you are right in the first being a golden. Also, congrats on 1k subs!

Thanks! We've had the watchtime for a while, but getting the 1k sub threshold has taken some time.
