For those of us watching, seeing you fix that corner is more useful than just changing out to a full front panel.
Helped me learn a little
Dan, please put the guard on that grinder set in the 5 to 5 position (when looking from the back). I've been using grinders for years but took the guard off to get into a tight spot once. Because there was no guard I was grinding in the kickback zone of the disk and it kicked back ripped the grinder from my hands and it ran up my face. Made a right mess because the disk had part shattered. I've now got scars up my lip and across my nose. That was restoring an old VW. I don't mean to be the health and safety police at all but if I can stop once person going through what happened to me I think it's worth mentioning.
I completely agree with you on that Guard
I’ve had a few disc explode as well
But luckily missed me.
I'll second that. I have that same grinder and it bit me badly with the guard off. Not kick back or disk going, but inattention on my part as to where my fingers were... I cringe now everytime I see one used without the guard.
Thank you for watching and for the comment. Yeah I need to put it back on really. unfortunately I took it off to do something when I got it and can't find it now. I need to order a new one anyway so I don't have to keep changing disc's!
I agree, Guard or gloves or both really.
@@DanChambersDAC I've got a guard for that grinder going spare if it helps? It's the deeper version for grinding discs, But could be used with cutting discs etc
Let me know if that's any help to you!
For someone who has never done fabrication before you made that look easy
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud, I really enjoyed having to think about how to make them. Think they turned out OK in the end. Still a LOT to learn though!
The look on your face when the new panel fitted ! Priceless. keep bashing away mate and don’t be down on your welding ! Show it and we can all see your improvements as the build goes on . Maybe you can do a segment of your skills improving along the way,it will encourage people to have a go.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. Glad you are enjoying it! I was pretty pleased with it I have to admit! I have posted a little bit in the latest video. That is what I want. I had no restoration experience before starting this.
The grin on your face when you realised it was working was awesome 👌🏻
Hi Dan
Your a breath of fresh air love your Videos. And like you I was a carpenter (retired)who loves messing with cars . Keep doing it your way but most of all Enjoy every second .
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. Glad you are enjoying them bud! Something about playing with car's that is just right!
Lovely Jubbly progressing very nicely.
Thank you for watching and for the comment bud. Glad you enjoyed it!
2 years late as only just found your channel but dude, stunning work on the metal fab! Your face when you had installed both bits was priceless. Made me happy that you were happy! Looking forward to watching the rest of the golf build to see how you finally finished it off. 👏
Excellent Channel, you thought of it, you did it, its working.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. So glad I decided to start the channel. I am really really enjoying it!
Learning is very important.
Thank you for watching and for the comment bud. 100%. Love learning new skill's!
Loving it .. don’t worry if it’s the right way or the wrong way...if it works , keep doing it.🇬🇧✊🏻
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment, I think I did pretty well with it! Exactly that. Alway's worth giving it a go!
Your a natural Dan well done looking good
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. Glad you are enjoying it. I really am!
Looking good Dan you have plenty of patience
Thank you for watching and for the comment bud. Glad you are enjoying it. This project seem's to have given me more patience than usual!
Really nice job man for not doing fab work before
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. I was pretty pleased!
tip for u when ur bending around a corner, do some relief cuts before hammering it to shape. no harm in welding up the cut afterwards and re shaping 👍🏻 great job
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. I did consider this but figured I would give it a go this way this time. Will try slitting it next time for sure.
Great work and great vids Dan, been in isolation so binge watched all your episodes, kinda wish I’d kept a video diary myself, it’s a huge learning curve, been a Mk1Gti fan nearly all my life 👍🏼 _dubmeister_
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. Glad yo are enjoying them. Love finding a channel that you can binge watch! This is something I have alway's wanted to do and to have the video's to look back on in years to come will be great!
Good job. Keep tacking along!
Thank you!
Nice work. Those panel repairs are looking good.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud, Not too bad are they. Still a long way to go until I am happy.
One word... Impressive 👏
Thank's Dude! Still not 100% there but we are getting somewhere now.
It's so nice to see the genuine happiness on your face when things go your way 👍 I think that's what makes it a good channel, you're a a normal bloke just giving it a go and learning along the way, keep it up mate!
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. I was so happy! So glad you are enjoying it. Just me attempting to do things.
Great work Dan, for someone who claims not to be a welder you’ve done a good job! I’d suggest you get some stiffer card for making templates and a thinner pen to get more accurate lines :) but all round great work.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. I don't think I did too bad either! I have indeed bought a thin Sharpie. Work's much better!
Nice work Dan, welding looks fine don’t worry too much about gaps between your repair panels and the body as it allows the weld to penetrate. Then when you grind flush there will still be weld there holding it all together if that makes sense?! A set of dolly’s would be a worthwhile investment too👍🏻
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. Yes Having watched a few video's and now done a few more repair's, Leaving a gap is much better! I have a set of hammer and dolly's too, Just not really used them much yet!
Well done Dan, I wouldn’t bother changing that panel. The patch repairs you’ve done on it look good enough. Invest in a shrinker/stretcher and a die grinder with small flap sander or ball grinder bits to get in the corners. Keep it up though mate doing well
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. I was pretty happy with it but for how far back I have taken the car I think it need's to be replaced. I would alway's know it wasn't perfect! Looked at the shrinker /Stretcher and they are on the wish list. Just need to earn some money now to be able to buy more kit! Got a Die Grinder with a few bit's but my compressor is rubbish!
Great job dude
Thank you for watching and for the comment Macaulay.
Class work on making them panels mate, another quality episode 👌
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment, Glad you enjoyed it bud.
Well done 😎👍🏼A fab start! Great video! Keep on keeping on!
Thank you bud.
Great work Dan, fantastic mate. 👍👍
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud.
What a brilliant start
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud.
@@DanChambersDAC anytime buddy. Your doing a cracking job
What a brilliant start. Very well done sir 👏
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. Getting somewhere now!
Dude, just returned to your channel after a hiatus, and am a bit behind on the the updates, but this video just shows what can be done when you really give things a go. Great work!!
Right am off to find myself a workshop to rent :o)
Thank you for coming back! Exactly that. Just shows what you can do when you put your mind to it.
Buzzing mate, love a bit self fab. Following 👍
Cheers dude.
Well done
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud.
Good repair work
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud.
defo recommend looking at Trev's Blog on youtube, his fab work is awesome
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. Love his video's! What a clever guy!
Well done lad for a beginner your getting along just fine keep it up 👍
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. I am pretty pleased with how I am doing so far.
that was very good Dan keep up your standard good video
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. Glad you enjoyed it.
Nice one mate ! Coming along nicely 👍🏽
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud.
Look at your face at 18.30 ... the smile says it all! That’s when you know you’re achieving your goals 👌🏻
Like a proud father 😂 I was pretty pleased! Thank you so much for watching and for the comment.
I love to see it! Great stuff Dan 👌🏻
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. Glad you are enjoying it.
Fair play dan you have done a great job for someone who has never done any fabrication work before. I have seen professionals make worse patch panels than that keep up the good work 👍
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. I am really pleased with it for my first attempt! Still not 100% where they need to be though.
That was awesome to see. Your face said it all when you had them in position ready to tack on! I don’t think there’s any problem with repairing the panels the way you’re doing.
Have you seen a channel called Soup Classic Motoring? He fabricates a lot of repair panels and it turns out really well. I reckon you’re on the right track. No need to replace a complete panel if it doesn’t need it.
Soup is an essential subscription
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. I was a little happy with them! I am now going to be changing the panel as I am not 100% happy with it. May be being a little hard on myself but I want it to be right.
I will give them a look. Thank you.
Be aware the disc construction differs, Cut off discs can not take sideways forces, grinding discs are designed for sideways forces - it looked like you were tidying up the edges with the cut off disc -Ideally have a grinder just for cut off and another for grinding disc.
Missing guard already commented on - people call grinders Death wheels for a reason.
Master class in panel welding check out early episodes of Bad Obsession Motorsports Project Binky.
Great work, good that you have popped your patch/welding cherry, keep the momentum going fella!
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. Yes I shouldn't really have been doing that with it. I need to invest in another Grinder really so I can have both set up. Unfortunately lost the guard for the grinder 😔 LOVE Bad Obsession! Those guy's have some serious skill's!
Nice work, the only way to learn on fixing cars and welding is getting hands dirty and you are. Keep good work going mate.
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! 100% The best way to learn is by doing. I think that is why In haven't learnt to weld before. I like to have an end goal to achieve and not just mess about with steel on a bench!
Dan first attempt of patch looking OK
Top guy/Top content/All the best!
Thank you so so much for watching and for the comment bud. Glad you are enjoying it!
Love the work mate.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment.
Keep up the great work mate!! Your face when you said “I’m well pleased” (with your patch panels) was so wholesome haha. Really happy it’s coming together, can’t wait to see how it continues to progress!!! 👍👌
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment, Glad you are enjoying it. 😂 I was so pleased with them! I think I did pretty well considering!
Nice one Dan first bit off making your own panel.. You be making loads off little things like that... When you had it in the vice you could off put a little slice right where it started to corner then bent it to your wood then cut off the two little bit off metal then weld the joint together 👍
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. Yes, Plenty of patch panels still to come! Good idea, Would have saved it pinching.
Very impressed Bro
Thank you for watching and for the comment bud! Glad you enjoyed it.
Cereal boxes are your friends. The cardboard is perfect for templating.
You will also be surprised at how many of your carpentry skills are oddly transferable.
For your first real attempt at this you seem to be doing just fine.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. We don't really eat any food that comes in card boxes! I was worried that the fabrication would be the most difficult thing. Turns out so far it isn't!
Brilliant effort, bud! Considering you haven’t done this type of thing before, you’ve done a great job fabricating those repair panels. Keep working on the welding, it will get better and better. Keep it up, Dan; it’s compulsive viewing.😎
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. It didn't turn out too bad considering did it! Welding is getting better every day! Glad you are enjoying it!
Another awesome video Dan!! :D
Thank you so much guy's can't wait to get it finished and drive down to meet you all!
great video....really interesting stuff,
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud.
Cracking video again 👍👍
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud.
Like your method of solving problems Dan its all about having skills that you pick up as a trademan. Nice one.
Thank you for watching and for the comment. I try to attack these problem's with a common sense approach, Think of what needs doing then take it step by step! Seem's to be working!
Loving this series, did a mk1 caddy ground up restoration few years ago, you're so lucky to have a big unit like that 👌
Thank you so much for watching and for commenting. I feel a Caddy could be another good project..... It's a great space isn't it!
Well you've made me feel pretty thick! That plywood template thing is a great idea. There was me trying to use angle-iron etc. You've done a better job with your first fabrication than I have in 3 years playing around. Great video Dan!
Thank you for watching and for the comment. Such a simple but so effective method! I can't take credit for it as I saw it on a video on CZcams (Can't remember which one though as I watch that many!) Glad you are enjoying it bud. Are you documenting your resto anywhere?
@@DanChambersDAC I should show my resto somewhere but I've doing it 18 years. I should pull my finger out really. I've restarted twice as I wasn't happy with my work. There's some great metalwork guides on Retro Rides forum if you want more.
Invest in a shrinker/stretcher set to go in your vice mate. Will be a game changer for fabricating curved panels
Thank you for watching and for the comment. I have been looking at them. Think I may have to invest!
Eres lo máximo me encanta restaurar mi mk1
¡Muchas gracias por ver Bud!
Epic work dude, for a beginner the panels turned out really good fair play
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. Still not 100% where they need to be but we are getting there.
Good effort Dan , tips and tricks as you learn as you go along . Steady away think twice , cut once.
Thank you for watching and for the comment. I thought it was a great little tip when I saw it! Work's so so well!
Save your cornflake boxes....your gonna need em😬
Also the little
co2 gas bottle's are gonna cost you a bomb search out a no rental high pressure cylinder supplier ( adams gas, hobby weld etc)
They'll save you money in the long run .
Your doing a great job 👍
Thank you for watching and for the comment. Yes I can see me needing a few! I know, I really do need to sort the gas situation out as these little bottles run out so fat! Glad you are enjoying it!
Dan take a look at Nitrosilvia channel. He does lots of fabrication and welding on old Rover SD1's. Sure you will pick up some useful pointers, but you already seem to have a decent idea on what you need to do given your current novice welder statue. Soon be a welding Jedi!
Thank you for watching and for the comment. Thank's for the tip bud, I will give him a search. Hopefully I will do bud, Got plenty of practice to come!
👍🚗 try with a little thicker cardboard it makes it easier to make templates, keep it up 😊
Thank you for watching and for the comment. I will give that a go!
Good job. I am professionally dedicated to repairing car bodies and it's nice to see you work. Keep it up!
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. They are pretty decent but I am still not 100% happy with them.
Can I say for a first attempt bloody brilliant mate. 👍👏👏
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud, I don't think I did too bad with it!
Well I've learnt loads from this dude. 👍👍
Thank you for watching and for the comment bro. I thought it was a great little tip!
Great video, Dan! Please use a guard on your grinder. Exploding discs are no joke and happen when you least expect. Stay safe!
Thank you for watching and for the comment bud.
Nice start on the patches, it’s very time consuming but very satisfying when you get a small area done. Great detailed video on your process on the patch replacement.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. It is very time consuming but also very enjoyable at the same time! Glad you enjoyed it bud.
I'm absolutely loving this, it's great to see you having a go at stuff like this and working things out as you go along 👍
Thank you for watching and for the comment bud, Glad you enjoyed it. I am pretty happy with how they turned out to be fair!
Great video Dan keep them coming .
Thank you for watching and for the comment bud.
Quality! Loved it, the smile on on your face said it all when it all came together!
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud, I was soooo happy!
Excellent work dan. Nice to see you trying as most panel beaters would just order the full panel.
Thank you for watching and for the comment. In hindsight I should have probably ordered the whole panel. I think the repair sections look pretty decent!
@@DanChambersDAC absolutely not the job you have done is brilliant and saves more problems with lining up etc later. Top job mate
Fabrication is real skill, learnt over many years, doing well tho Dan
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. Yes, I have learnt so much in the past week but have so so mush still to learn.
Well done mate. Literally living my dream
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. This has been my dream for so many year's! Glad I am finally doing it!
Wow first attempt, get in there. So pleased for you mate👍
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud, Didn't turn out too bad did it?!
Brilliant work dan, fair play
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud!
Great work dan! Amazing effort for your first go
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. It didn't turn out too bad did it!
Great work Dan, I'm hooked on this now lol
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud, Glad you are enjoying it.
Nice one Dan, working it out as you go.

hi Dan love the channel keep up the fantastic job your doing and more faith in yourself as you are doing a awesome job for someone who has never done this sort of thing before
Thank you so much for watching and for the positive comment. I doubt myself in everything that I do!
Great start to your fabrication skills. Love the content...
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud, Didn't do too bad did I?! Glad you are enjoying it.

New string to your bow. Nice work dude😎
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. I don't think I did too bad with it did I!

Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. Glad you are enjoying it.
That's a good repair looks amazing keep up the good work
Thank you for watching and for the comment bud, I was pretty pleased with it for my first attempt!
@@DanChambersDAC there's nothing wrong with that tidy job
Looks good man! I learned on my Scirocco, just keep doin one piece at a time and have patience. Great Job and don’t sweat grinding the welds, you’ll never see half of them.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud, Yes trying to just break it down into individual pieces so I don't get too overwhelmed. Glad you are enjoying it. Yes, Learning now that some weld's can be left a little.
Hey Dan, great video as always! Been following since the t5 series (got a 04 shuttle myself and that series has helped loads for me 👍🏻)
thought I’d comment.. I’m a fabricator welder of nearly 10 years, your skills are coming on good mate 👍🏻.. would just echo other messages about the grinder guard, and I can see you’ve taken it on board already, get one on there bud, I could tell you some horror stories about not having one on there. Wouldn’t wanna see you get hurt, they aren’t to be messed with.
Keep up the good work man can’t wait to see the golf progress 👍🏻 👨🏭 peace ✌️
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud, I have a lot to learn still but am making decent progress I think. Yeah I need to sort on really. I have lost it for this grinder though....
Great video Dan, good to watch you learning as you go. The more you do the better you will get and you have plenty to do lol
Thank you for watching and for the comment. Glad you are enjoying the content! Yeah hopefully with the amount I have to do I will get better!
That looks I fine repair to me Dan grate content as usual 👍👍
Thank you for watching and for the comment bud. I am pretty pleased how it turned out!
really starting to crack on with it now mate. loving the little fabrications, that one for the front panel looked decent!
Thank you for watching and for the comment. Getting there bro, It didn't turn out too bad did it!
@@DanChambersDAC I have seen proper fabricators make worse mate, well deserved pat on the back for it!
I've been binge watching this series today. Been awesome to see the progress! Keep cracking at it mate. (Made my way here from your instagram)
another great episode ...your inserts don't need to be perfect fit ..a "mm" or 2 will aid the weld to bond both edges together ..your doing a great job ,,slow and steady wins the race
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. Yes, I have done a few patches now and it seem's that having a gap makes it all much easier. Glad you are enjoying it.
Hello Dan a great video and a perfect work 👍👍👍👍from Germany 🇩🇪 👋👋👋Kai
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. Hope you are well.
Hi Dan great to see progress and the regular videos you are posting. Think you did a cracking job for someone who has never done it before!👌. Couple of questions....what thickness of steel did you use? Where did you buy? And how much? Plus what primer did you use to cover them up after welding? Also would have been nice to get some info on how you set up your mig welder and your technique welding in the patches.... Thanks for your efforts though you are doing great and best of luck with the channel. 😁👌👍🇬🇧
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. Glad you are enjoying. It is turning out Ok so far isn't it! I am using 1mm steel, I actually got given the steel by a friend. The primer is 'Weld Through Primer' from Halfords. Yeah I have been thinking I will do a little explanation of how I have set it up.
Class work again mate 👍🏽 id defo buy a shrinker/stretcher as it will make your life easier fabricating the repair panels.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment bud. Great idea, Just been looking at them. Need to stop spending money!
