- Episode 18 of the Golf GTI restoration project.
Time to start thinking about getting the engine sorted out. My friend's at D2D Blasting offered to vapour blast the aluminium engine components so I strip the parts and take them to be sorted.

Excellent business idea D2D
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! Isn't it just!
You can do steel but after blasting you dip the part in a non rust solution, great results from D2
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! Ahh Ok.
Who remembers taking valve spring off with a socket and hammer much quicker 😂😂
🤣 Living life on the edge!
Man those parts look great. Cant wait for the body to get done so we can see you working on that shiny engine...
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! I can't wait either! Hopefully we can start on the engine early next year. Need to raise some funds to be able to afford to get the engine work done.
Keep it up Brother. These videos saves me watching reruns of Dallas 👍👍
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! 🤣🤣🤣
Nice Job. Built a a powder coating oven few months ago, just building a vapor blasting machine now!
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! I would love my own powdercoating plant! I have zero money at the moment to be able to get the beam etc blasted and powdered.
Great service, great support for you as well, thanks D2D, 😉🇮🇪
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching Alan.
D2D done some fantastic work with the media blasting of the parts ...came out really nice...this must be exciting times for you...wishing u all the best for the rest of the build

Fantastic, Engine parts look amazing, your giving me ideas / inspiration very episode I watch!! Thanks for the great footage 👌👍

Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! Great idea isn't it!
Another great Sunday morning watch , before and after parts wash , really nice to see them like brand new again. It's a nice break from mind boggling thinking of welding and measurement's .
With the parts your replacing , I have in my garage a White board and just write as I go along what parts I need for my projects , (Which in my case) is scooter,s. You sort of forget things from time to time , White board helps naming parts you need to replace (old age on my part 😂😂, cheers Andy Richardson.
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching Andy, Great result's weren't they! Just need to get some other parts sand blasted now and painted up. Yeah I could do with a white board really.
Wow! Those parts look amazing! Another great video mate, loving the progress of this golf
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud!

Great episode and a nice change of pace away from the welding an fabrication work. Enjoying the channel. A nice sent or Pirelli P slots for Juicy to sit on would be cool.
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! Glad you enjoyed it! I had some P slot's that came with the car but I sold them on!
Well worth the cost when the parts look that good
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! Definitely!
I've got a bits box..... But going to start calling it get me our off sh*t box.... Haha 👍
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! It really has got me out the shit so many times!
Awesome results and a great switch from the body work, with more to come of both, this builds the interest in the progress of the build for sure. Well done d2d! For the engine as skim I guess the guys that sorted the T5 might be good here too? Top job Dan, looking forward to seeing the next video 😎👍✅
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! Nice little break wasn't it! D2D did a fantastic job of the parts! Need to sort out getting the other parts blasted and powder coated now. I am thinking of Using those guy's to do the engine work too but I need to earn some money to be able to get it all done! There will be a few more months of bodywork involved.
@@DanChambersDAC everything I did was based around the shillings too! It’s definitely going very well so far ... and there’s no reason to rush 😎👍✅
Gutted. Thought I’d could have some nice storage boxes until you revealed the bad news lol
🤣 I would imagine this is the reason they send the item's back in cardboard! Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud!
Hello a great video and a lot of information perfect 👍👍👍from Germany 🇩🇪 👋👋👋Kai
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching Kai
With vapour blasting something like a cylinder head, it's important to note this will still need a proper clean to remove the glass bead. Run a bolt down the threads and you'll likely hear some crunching as the glass bead is crushed. These and the water jackets etc will need a proper checking over. Any glass bead that gets in your engine will damage it very quickly.
With something like a head, also considering a proper degrease and soda blasting, as soda is water soluble. Vapour blasting I find does give a superior looking finish, but some things are more suitable for this than others.
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching Brian, The head was washed with pressurised water and then blown out with compressed air to dry it all off. I will check the head over again before it is assembled but am pretty confident that all of the glass bead is removed from the head.
@@DanChambersDAC No problem. Love your work and in the same position with my own restoration.
I've have lot of bits vapour blasted, and although they pressure wash and blow out the parts, you can hear it still trapped in threads when fitting a bolt etc at times.
Safe rule is to assume they've got 99% out and always check for the 1%.
I saw a guy on a forum have a cam cover done for the first time. The part had a splash plate under the oil filler hole , which wasn't removed. On return from blasting he removed it and had an egg cups worth of glass bead stuck in there that you couldn't see.
Shiny thx 👍🚗😊
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud!
11:53 I hate that polystyrene sound. It goes right through me 😜
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! 😂 Yeah isn't the best is it?!
Great service and another great video Dan. Are you going to lacquer or seal the parts to stop corrosion?
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! I have asked the question and have been told that they don't need sealing.
Hi dan only just discovered your channel, loving it by the way. Im in the middle of doing up my 1990 mk1 golf cabriolet. Do you work at heritage ? Big love from Greater Manchester regards Dean
Thank you so much for watching and for your comment Dean, Glad you are enjoying the content! Ahh sweet, Nice little project. No I don't work for Heritage. I contacted them when I started this project and they wanted to be involved!
@@DanChambersDAC ok dan no worries. Keep it up mate grow the channel, ive seen there is very little quality mk1 golf content 👍
Would it not be worth getting the head pressure tested before getting it cleaned then a skim? Just to help. The two tapered parts on top the valves are could collets.
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! i just opted to do it this way. The head will be going off to have the valves etc inspected and re seated. Yes they are! I had a mind blank when filming....🤦♂️
Awesome videos ! Hey what camara and focusing mode are you using?
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! I am using a Sony ZV-1 Camera with Auto focus on, Also use a Go Pro Hero 4 That I have had for years!
Is there any protection needed of the raw alum after this process?
Thank you so much for the comment and for watching bud! I have asked and apparently not!
Hi Dan another fab video! Can you tell me the make and model of the black and green torch you used in the video?
