Time to start on repairing the shell. In this episode I remove more metal and begin the repairs, Starting with the boot floor.

I don't and am still sorting my head out from a breakdown. In posting this content and being honest, I hope it encourages someone else to take on a project they have alway's wanted to do but have been a little put off by.

More good work Dan! Don't say it isn't interesting, because it is! I'm up to this exact same stage with my Rocco too - crusty sills, rear chassis legs and bits of arch. I've done one side, just need to get the car in the air and start the other side. Watching your work is pretty inspiring. You need to stop putting yourself under pressure too. I too always aim for a perfection, and one of the reasons my car has taken so long is because i keep restarting bits after relearning how to do them properly. I can only imagine doing videos is even more pressure. Do your best but don't expect things beyond your capabilities. Nobody will hold it against you. I'm going back to watch ep15 again now for some more ideas!

Glad you sorted the gas Dan, it makes all the difference. I was a welder/ fabricator for 20 odd years and was no stranger to welding motors on axle stands, getting covered in crap and splatter! I used CO2 for years as I found it to be more forgiving if the metal wasn’t brilliantly clean and later moved onto 95/5. No point doing a job if you’re not satisfied with the outcome but take it from me you’re doing a stellar job mate👍🏻 get yourself a wax oil gun also especially you now you now where the traps are! And then get your welding bloke to let you have a play with TIG!

Want to get the bodywork done ASAP so I can get it into paint. We have spoken about TIG, I am putting it off as I can't afford to buy a welder yet 😂

Had more wobbles than I remember ..walked away for a while and did the same..good talk with yourself and get back in with a fresh head ..job always seems easier when you go back ..no Restoration is factory perfect cos the restorer puts his own stamp on it ..keep it up you got a lot to do but plenty of time to do it 👍👍👍

Some more nice little bits of fabrication there, Dan. Don’t beat yourself up about what you’re doing. Going from the T5 to this is a HUGE step and you’ve already demonstrated how your skills are improving with every new bit you tackle. Thing is, even the bits no can see aren’t being bodged; you’re making them all look great. Sensible for you to say, it’s not going to be factory perfect, but every bit you repair is unique and done by you. I can’t think of anything other, than you should be really proud and happy with what you’ve achieved so far. Keep it up, bud; you’re going from strength to strength. Shame about the Porsche....😂😜

Been watching this one from the beginning. Its a big task to restore this car back to its former glory. What I have seen up to now is spot on . Fabricating panels and welding them in takes a lot of patience to get it right . Your wood working skills are showing through in your attention to detail. Looking forward to the next video. Dan , I must say you are doing a better job than the thumbs down you are getting. Your explanation on how your going to do things is perfectly plain. Dan you're doing a good job bud seriously, unless you have the factory presses/tooling there is no chance of recreating exact factory finish. Do not worry so much especially on inner panels that will never see the light of day again

Trouble is I watch the pro's doing it on CZcams and want to get it as good 😂 Hopefully the car will end up being finished to a decent standard. It is a little bigger project than I first thought!

Doing a great job Dan, would probably be easier to chop out full panels and replace them but where is the fun in that plus i like how you are approaching the project.

When I was a young apprentice (back in the seventies) there was always a load of the tall gas bottles by the main workshop doors...I asked my foreman “why they all had the initials MT chalked on them?” He looked at me and slowly said “cos they’re empty Phil” - I could see at that point that he thought I was going to be a total “no hoper” ha ha! Funny timing that; I was in a similar situation yesterday, I've just switched over from flux core to argon+co2 sheilded and the difference is night and day. Turns a ball-ache into a joy to work with.

Try and leave the original lines and divets in if they aren’t rotten. You may need to do more welding and patches may need to be odd shapes to cut around them but you get a much neater job in the end and it’s a lot less stress not having to work out how to form so many different shapes into flat steel. The divet you left out is for an earth point so it may be worth drilling a hole and welding a nut underneath to bolt the earth wire to.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, that dimple in the boot floor that you cut out is an earthing point for the rear light clusters so you will likely have to find an alternative for the earth bolt. All the best.
Yes cheers, I will be able to earth the light's at another point. Or as my skills improve I may try and make the dimple again. Thanks for the comment.
If the existing dimple isnt too rotten then I guess you could cut that out of the piece of floor that you removed, make a hole in the new floor and weld the dimple in. All the best for whichever route you go down and keep up the good work.

Most ppl who are enjoying this are one man bands in a small garage like you and want to see the best way to do things with the tools they have. Great job. On the boot floor could you have cut out the circular detail and weld it back into your new patch panel and then grind off the welds. A bit of work but it should work.

I didn't realize you were using straight CO2... Argon and CO2 mix will be like night and day different...Keep up the great content. Also I thought you said you were going to get some heat for your shed. It looks pretty chilly in there....

Just had the same issue with the gas as you, ruined a couple of repair panels as a result, what a difference it makes having the right gas.....

Don’t take too much off the car apart before adding panels back on or it will warp and get overwhelming. Just take it step by step. Chin up and weld on. Enjoy.

Sometimes you need to know where to draw the line. Like not getting a perfect match for the divots... Who cares. Some git nicked my wheel nut caps, if you own a VW you know what I'm talking about. The pointless plastic covers. Anyway it was £20 for genuine or £5 for Chinese copies. The copies say VOL SKWAGON and not VOLKSWAGON but I figured no one will get on all fours to notice unless they're nicking them.
