I first started thinking about being a greaser when my class started reading The Outsiders. And then I started researching it more and more and then I stumbled on your channel, and I thought that you were badass, so I started to become a greaser.

I've been into it since I was about 12, I'm 19 now. It all started when I found my dad's old leather jacket which I still wear to this day as I grew into it. I grew up with the car shows and the music so it was only natural I'd become one. My dad got me hooked on the music, he met the Stray Cats at a bar he was working at and loved them. He was more of a small-town hotrodder cowboy type greaser. Cowboy boots, western shirts. That kinda thing. I definitely adopted it even though I have my chucks and my wife beaters. Of course he grew out of the style and turned into a goofy middle aged dad, but he always had love for old cars which also passed to me. When he passed away, I was a true fucking greaser. People knew who I was. I was an urban legend around town. The "greaser kid" or the "Elvis Boy" I was known as. Even though I was bullied, damn did I get thick skin. You can really tell I lived a hard life by a young age, but that is really what made me love the culture in the first place. It isn't about fake bravado or being tough, but being distinguished. You aren't just part of the crowd anymore.
Today, I ran into a homeless guy in a restaurant. He was getting some chicken for his dog. He took one look at me and said "Damn you look like you're from the fucking 1960s. Never let anyone change you, boy did they try to change me." He told me his story and he was somebody who was homeless by choice because he liked to be free with his dog. He lived off the grid and said he was happy to be what he wanted to be. Moral of the story is, follow your gut. When you start doing what you want to do, like become a greaser, things start to mold for you. Don't be a cookie cutter person. Be your own fucking man/woman and boy will it be a great pay off even if you get Hell doing it at first. I know I fucking did.

So I became a greaser a year ago, my friends call me Soda (I drink a shit ton of Pepsi) and today I just stumbled upon The Outsiders. I watched it. I’m proud to have the nickname Soda...
Sick new intro. Started greasing and shit in high school. Been a lone wanderer since day one. I had no idea the greaser culture was still killing it until I found this channel. I legitimately thought I was the only one. This has become one of my favorite channels.
I got into greasing through Arctic Monkeys of all things, saw Alex Turner's hair and started looking at how to do it, styled myself after him then discovered the whole Greaser scene, the clothes, the music the attitude etc. In my city I am pretty much the only person who dresses like this, there is no greaser subculture so I hang about with the punks and emos and stand out and it's nice. Living in the most run down area of my city and daring to dress like an emo/punk, let alone a greaser, get's us in a lot of fights and people start recognising me in the city centre. Hoping maybe I'll inspire a few cats to start greasing up and get something going here.

I just found this channel man your cool.i was a greaser back in late 70's through the 80's.i was the only greaser in middle school and high school I used to get alota attention alotta dudes wanted to hang around with me.i wish I could've other greaser friends back then but there were none..lol.my oldest brother used to be a greaser back in the 60's and early 70'S.back then I wanted to be like the 50's ELVIS.man u brought me some great memories hearing your story.thanks keep it cool cat!!
Always like to hear people's stories. I like old 30s and 40s stuff myself. Did the greaser./biker thing in high school. I got back into it because I like classic Indian and HD motorcycles and rat rods. Thanks for sharing your story! All the best!
Well I just became a greaser this year, I'm 14 and in my English class in 8th grade, we started reading the book 'The Outsiders', and then I watched the movie. I felt like I didn't belong anywhere and I was just shit until I read the book and watched the movie and learned more about Ponyboy. I related to Ponyboy so much. I began listening to Rockabilly, wearing t-shirts, leather jackets, jeans, boots, and I wore grease in my hair even though I'm a girl. I have shortish long hair I comb back with a comb. My mother is actually accepting the fact that I'm a greaser and so is my dad. That's how I got my Greaser nickname 'Pony' because of how i relate to Ponyboy so much.
Missed this one the first time round! Great to hear an open and honest story which reminds me (and probably many of the older members of the scene) how hard it was to get information and find the right people back in the day. Nowadays, there's too much info making it just as hard to get it right :)

I'm gonna be entirely honest, i don't Remember my transition into a greaser... I remember looking in my garage for a cd, and I stumbled across the 'Elvis top #31 hits'
I remember listening to it and I loved it so much more than the crap I was listening to before, and it kind of scared me how great Elvis was and yet I'd only heard a few songs by him. After that, all I remember is I bought a biker jacket... Now what seemed like a lifestyle to fit in my 'dumb ass 14 year old mind' as madman puts it(👌) it turned into my daily lifestyle instead of some job to maintain. Now I wake up every morning and tuck in my shirt and slap on my jacket, grab my comb and walk to the bus stop.

Hey Madman, I just recently came across your channel here and absolutely dig it, brother! I have watched several of your vids and in reading many of the comments around them, I'm really pleased to see that the greaser/rockabilly culture is still going strong and has expanded to the younger generations. It makes me feel like an old man because at 55 years old, I am pretty much old enough to be a dad, or even a grandpaw to most of the commenters here! I will try to relate my own journey to greaserdom in so many words, for those who may be interested....
To begin with my own ancestry, I come from a long line of fiercely independent Scots-Irish/German Appalachian farmers, blacksmiths, bootleggers and ridge runners. In fact, my dad was practically a living example of the old Robert Mitchum movie, "Thunder Road" as he was an early greaser during the post-WW2 era who drove a suped up '41 flathead V-8 Ford Custom and was a moonshine runner for my grandpaw and other local old timers who made bootleg whiskey. From 1947 to1951, he hauled loads of whiskey from out of the northeast Georgia/western North Carolina mountains down to distribution points in and around Atlanta, GA. His run ins with Johnny Law progressed to the point that by 1951, the local draft board gave him the ultimatum of either joining the military or spending some serious time in prison.....he wisely chose the military and served 20 years, including the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Being an early greaser, his music of choice was the late 40's and early 50's hillbilly bop/country jump tunes popular to that time. He stayed a greaser, though a much more reserved version, throughout the rest of his life. Dad's 3 younger brothers came up in early/mid-1950's during the heart of the fledgling rockabilly period and just like my dad, were two fisted, hard drinking greasers themselves! Their appetites for fast living and juvenile delinquency inevitably placed all of them before the local draft board and given the choices of military or prison! My mother graduated high school in 1956 and even she was a hardcore rockabilly/rock and roller chick! Given my heritage, you could say that it was pretty much carved in stone that I would eventually become a greaser myself!
Through my mom, I was introduced to 1950's rock and roll early on from her record collections....Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Dell Vikings, The Platters and many, many more. Though I did dig doo-wop music, it was rockabilly that really touched me deep down in my soul and as I entered middle school and my early teenage years, I was fortunate to have found a local store that for a time carried a small rack of bootlegged 8 tracks.....hey, this was the mid/late 70's, after all! I managed to get a few 8 tracks of early Sun rockabillies such as Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and some various artist tapes with Gene, Eddie, and others. Also, an older cousin gave me her album copy of "Elvis, The Sun Sessions" in 1977....incidentally, the year that he died. Although we were only able to pick up 2 channels on the old television set, I did my best to read the weekly TV Guide in the anticipation of catching any of the old rock and roll/greaser movies from the 1950's! I loved watching them for the music and even the somewhat cheesy plots, but I used them much as a guide for the styles and attitudes. Along with the movies, I would ask my dad and uncles for advice on what pomades and products they used in their heyday. By the time I entered high school in the early 1980's, I put the Wildroot/Brylcreem in my long hair, greased up the early era Elvis doo(1954/55) and wore mostly period clothes! It just so happened that I was the one and only greaser in school and it kind of made me something of an outcast, especially given that most everyone was into the punk, new wave and the general pop scene.....and there were even some disco hold overs still around and about, but I stuck to my guns and stayed the course of my greaser/rockabilly passion! Luckily, through all the disco and new wave synth pop drivel of the time, the neo-rockabilly movement had crossed the Atlantic from England and out of the L.A. area giving us bands like The Stray Cat, The Blue Cats, The Polecats, Levi and the Rockats, The Blasters and a whole plethora of "_____ Cats"! Though the neo bands provided a welcome relief from the 'pop du jour', I was always a more of a purist when it came to my rockabilly and tried my best to stick with the originals. It was long before the advent of personal computers and the easy access to digital collecting. Hell, I had to drive 50 miles in order to get to any of the bigger record stores, and after reading(researching) in music mags for any articles about the more obscure rockabilly artists of the '50's, I would go once every month or two in the long journey to the record shops in the hopes of scoring some rare artists on vinyl or cassette...or anything!!!
I stuck with the greaser look throughout the 80's, but unfortunately, the only thing that could keep my hair from inevitably falling out was the floor! When the hair was mostly gone, the need for grease was gone as well, but I have stayed a greaser in my heart through all my life.....and ultimately, that is where it counts! To all you young cats out there who are looking to get into the greaser life, I say go for it! Greasers have the coolest attitudes, ride the coolest bikes, drive the coolest cars and by far, get the coolest chicks and listen to the coolest music! Now.... I will say that in my life, I did follow some of the bad aspects that my dad and uncles did in their time. I took up the habits of smoking and drinking, and even occasionally hauled a little moonshine in my younger driving days. With that said, I ain't your paw, but I DO NOT recommend those things to any of you! I deeply apologize for being so long winded with my own story but maybe some of you young cats can find a little inspiration from it in helping you to put together your own template in becoming a greaser. I will close by saying......follow your passions, work hard, play hard, stay clean and above all,.... stay greezy, all you hepcat kittens and daddyo's out there.....wherever you are!!!! Thank you for letting me post!

I was completely rejected by my generation and I felt completely alone. About 11 years ago (5th grade) we went on a field trip to the local history museum. I instantly felt great, and started to volunteer there on Saturdays. Before you know it I was really clicking with the older people running the place, WW2 vets and whatnot. I always understood them and they understood me. They showed me the greaser way, from worldview to style to music to cigarette brand and cars. People still give me shit for smoking Luckies and listening to Eddie Cochran.

I kinda had the same deal goin on as a kid as you did. I didn't know what it was called, all I knew was that I loved rock 'n roll, wore denim and leather, and hated school with a passion. I tried to find myself growing up in different looks and styles, but nothing ever had my heart like the classic greaser style, that and my entire life I've felt out of place, wanted to live in the 40's and 50's for as long as I can remember. Now I'm covered in American traditional and a few custom tattoos, have my leather goods, and really came to hone that "fuck you" attitude I've had my whole life. I love this channel a lot, please keep making videos!
ive been a greaser for about 1-2 years at the moment ive really liked the style and also i already knew how to you know fix bikes and cars and shit i really dig the old cars and motorcycles and its really hard because people in aus dont really dig the style at least where i came from and when i became a greaser my whole life changed for me ps: madman your my favorite youtuber at the moment.

I started to do my hair at 15, that was back in 1983.
Cheapest basketball sneakers & jeans, at the time I didn't even know what a pair of Levi's was.
No "buckle boots" & too young to own a record player let alone "importation" records featuring G Vincent, E Cochran or J Burnette.
In return one of my folks had such records & I was lucky enough to get to listen to that terrific music.
Got myself into the Neo Edwardian style from mid 40s London and again, took me 3 years to save enough to get me an "off the peg" drape jacket which I still have.
Nowadays dying to retire in less than seven years here in England since 1993 and thankfull for a great live thanks to all this.
Got to write some lyrics on my channel, check it out by all means.

I’m 13 and I’ve been a greaser for a couple months. 😂 I’m a huge fan of Elvis and Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Tom Jones, all those guys and have been for years now, and I’ve got leather and denim jackets which I wear all the time, use a load of pomade and have kind of an intentionally messy pompadour going on hair-wise. I love old cars from the ‘40’s and ‘50’s and sometimes I’ll be walking along and people will shout “ELVIS” happened to me today, cause I live in a town you see the same people all over the place, this girl who’s seen me several times before and refers to me as “ELVIS” often shouts it at me as I walk past. So that’s kind of a running joke. Being a greaser is amazing and although I wear chinos instead of jeans and sneakers instead of boots, the tucked in shirt, medallion, leather and denim jackets, aviators and greasy hair are my specialty and being a greaser is badass.👌🏻😎👊🏻
man, i dig the story and the new into i became a greaser in freshman year around the 3rd quarter i honesty can't remeber what gave me the idea of becoming a greaser but i finally pulled the trigger after i saw a jr that was a greaser with his leatherjacket and sunglass in the school and i said to my friends "thats cool man " then i started watch the madman and thats how i started greasing

I knew what greasers were. I just didn't know what they were called. So I called them "50s gangsters"
We were reading the outsiders in ELA and after we watched the movie. And i thought "damn. That looks cool. I wanna do that" so I asked my aunt for some hair grease (turns out that's pretty rare nowadays. At least where in at. So I just got gel instead) found a leather jacket, I always wore blue jeans cuffed up though. And I always wore a t shirt. And that's how I started.

I’m 52. I’ve been a Greaser/Rockabilly throughout my life without the look. I went through the punk scene, the metal head scene, the Mod scene. But I always came back to my true way of life of the 50s way of life, Rockabilly/Greaser.

I have always had a liking of the rebel greaser look, and when i found my dads old leather jacket I knew i wanted to be a greaser. So i started wearing it and had dumbass comments about it but pushed through it cause what do they know? Greasers are kinda big in my family, my dad was somewhat a greaser back in his day and my grandpa lived through the 60’s so he was a sub genre of greaser in his part of the city and my family is the middle class kinda family and thats why i have so much motivation to be part of the greaser culture because i have to most respect for real greasers

Hello dude! I dig your channel! I am from Brazil, so sorry for my english mistakes. So let´s go, i am becoming a greaser, i am 30 years old, but always been the shy nerd guy, but i was engaged with a girl for like 6 years, she dumped me , and i got all this melancoly shit and stuff, and i decided to change my style, and since i always listened to greaser songs and some psychoabilly stuff or horror punk, i started changing, cut my hair to do pompadour, changing clothes and its like a huge metamorphosis!

I as well started when I was 14 in freshman year. I am 22 here right now in late of 2018.
But I started out about the same way. People made fun of me and all, but then everybody got use to it and they ended up loving my new style and couldn't see me being anything else. But there were no greasers in my highschool, I was inspired when I played Fallout 3 for the first time shortly after it was first released. Anyone who has played Fallout will know why and how that was my inspiration.
I got all into the 1950's because of it, and wanted to learn more about this beautiful era. I started listening to all the music and watched the movies. Of course starting out with the usual greaser starter film's such as, Grease 1 and 2, The Outsiders, Rebel without a cause and The Wild Ones. I was in awe and wanted to get into it and be different and cool. I saw it as a true passion.
After a while I ended up convincing a couple of my friends to get into the style with me and create my own wannabe gang. I guess most young starting greasers come off as posers. Hahaha. But ya learn over time with trial and error.
I started as a full blown greaser, evolved into more rockabilly, but nowadays just a casual mix of all sorts of 1950s vintage styles. Anything from blue jeans, motorcycle jacket and P.F Flyers/Engineer Boots, to other styles like a clean cut Ricky Nelson style and even Don Draper formal apperal, when an occasion calls for it. Everything Vintage from the 1950s pretty much. Nowadays, after years of practice and perfection, I pull off my retro styling quite flawlessly and don't second think any of it, nor am I a "poser" like I had been when I first started. I just throw it on and go about my business during the day and act normal, like a normal non superficial human being. People love how I am different from the crowd. I see it as honoring the past and in my attempt, trying to bring an old world back to life.

Iv been into the greaser style since I was young bc I grew up around it, something that I think really made me get into was my dad and watching the outsiders with my grandpa when I was 7 or 8.
from 8:16 - 8:36 ... very relatable XD oh well, I'm different, so what? Why do people have'ta care? I've been into this type of scene since i was 13. I saw The Outsiders in 8th grade, and been into it ever since because it's relatable and REAL, not fake like a lot of stuff recently. I've always been into the "feminine greaser" type of style, this just gave me a ticket and reason to really start showing it. For at least 4 years it's helped boost confidence and self esteem and tons of other shit. I walked into geography class one day with blue jeans, black "buckled boots" (i don't remember exactly the type of boots), a tight black top, flannel, hair in a "girly pompadour" (i have long hair but imitated a pompadour- just adapted it to my hair style), and my trademark leather jacket- and my TEACHER was the one to compliment me and joke around and talk about greasers and the whole scene with me. Greasers are cool, mainstream's kinda boring.

How I became a greaser: I always really liked the 50s or at least the style of it. I liked the style of 1950s diners and music, clothes, etc. When I was in middle school we read the outsiders and then watched the movie, even though I wasn’t in a gang or anything I somehow felt like I related to them(even though I’m a girl). I didn’t have very many friends and anyone who I was friends with barely talked to me outside of school. A year or two ago I found out that greasers were still a thing, which was news to me considering that no one I knew dressed or acted like one. I started dressing like a greaser and started attending car shows and made greaser friends and for the first time in a long time I felt like I actually had a place to belong. Now I’m in the 12th grade and I’ve never felt happier.
I love that, I'm in 7th grade now and just like you, I've always been obsessed with the 50's when I was very young. I wanted to dress like how the girls did and I think all of that died out when I turned 10, my family thought i was weird, people around me thought I was weird and how I dressed and when I looked around, everyone either wore simple cheetah leggings and cartoon shirts, which I didn't like. My parents tried to convince me multiple times on what I should wear but I never cared for those kind of clothes. Now that I'm in 7th grade and a teenager now, in ELA class, we read the outsiders. This changed everything for me, for the first month or so, I started off by loving the characters and everything, but it wasn't until a few days ago that I started getting in depth on how greasers dressed and acted, and I have to say, I love it. I really want to be a greaser and I hate to admit it, but I'm scared of what my family will think. I could care less about what others thought, but my family, that's a different story. I'm sure they wouldn't let me, they would be disapproving and they'll say it's "Just a phase" and that I'll grow out of it. But thank you for sharing this, I've been getting into cars lately. Me and my dad were driving and we saw this car club. There were a bunch of classic cars there and I was intriguied by it. But anyways, I can't wait to become a greaser, I know it's not just a style, it's a culture and more. I just need to find a way to get there. Do you have any tips on how to style your hair for a greaser girl?
My story’s pretty lame and usual. In 7th grade and back I felt really out of place in school. No self esteem at all. Then in like the middle of 7th grade we watched the outsiders in English. I really felt like I related to those guys. Reasons like being a social outcast and that jazz. The first hair product I used (the day after I saw the movie) was Axe hair cement. Not a good product for anything really other than spiking. I tried just a simple side part slickback. I learned about pomades and stuff from Tom when he still was Askgreaser like 3- 3.5 years ago. I got clothing style tips from Outlaw around the same time. I’ve always liked classic and hard rock but I expanded into the rockabilly, psychobilly, doo wop and even some swing. Also I really started getting self confident when someone told me about you Madman. The videos you made about attitude and stuff like that really helped me. Albeit I still can’t talk to chicks for shit I can go out in public and feel like I’m my own person. Breaking the status quo. Going against multi-billion dollar commercial companies pushing for everyone to look a certain way. Society becomes shitty when there is no rebellion. That’s where us greasers come in. 11th grade and still greasing on.

cat that's like how I was, I didn't like who I was cause I felt lame and didn't really like it so I was lookin' for somethin to be and hold on to and that's when I got my hands on a copy of the outsiders and I felt like I related to em a bit. I didn't want to be like the fuckboys with their shitty music and all so I went for somethin' that I related to. I'm the only greaser at my school and that's all right because I scare the shit out of everyone and it's funny really because they act all tough then when a cat with a greasy pompadour, wearin' a leather jacket that's got nothin' to loose come by they get real fuckin' quiet
I remember reading the outsiders in 7th grade, it totally changed my life honestly. I just related and idolized them so much.

Hi, reminds me some way in my own story, living that way for over 20yrs now. It started same way, listening to those old songs, addicted to old movie stars etc. now, a lil bit older (maybe not really wise ;-) ) i´m only living and looking for other true greasy people her - in Germany. walk the line, guy. we are not few - we are a force!

I've been into it since I was 12. Yeah... I'm 72 now. Still play a Lester through a beater '57 4X10 Bassman in a hot band and have two Harleys in the garage... Always remember: Red Wing 22-68s are the true greaser engineer boots.

Im a greaser since the 11 years old. I still remember when my grandfather got this music video and put in (it was a old Rock and Roll music concert). After that i was fascinated and then I started to investigate and I saw that there was a whole movement that kept that kind of music alive and I said to myself: I have to be just as cool as them. and here proudly greaser and rebellious

The stlyes the arts .music. Why of life .living. The ladies . and their sassy jaw droppin looks. Ha. So however i same story. But never join a gang. I see the grease everywhere in riverside. I became a full Greaser back in 82'.Similar story as you.But I was 12 and in junior high.I was a thin whimp.Always scared kid.I did this because I had a bully who always would punch me in the arm when he'd see me then laugh it off as he'd walk away.Or punch me in the back or stomach when I wouldn't expect it knocking the wind out of me at times.If friends who knew me saw what he would do to me they would say stop doing that to Pete and stick up for me.They would say he's gonna get even with you someday.He would laugh it off.One day me and my Mom were going through some old pics of theres.I saw pics of my dad and my uncle's all greasered out in the 50's and they looked cool.I had always knew they were 50's kids because of the music they all listened to around us and I loved all that music.My mom told me how they took care of themselves and friends too who were treated badly.You mean bullied.She said yes.i told her I want to look like them.So she helped me become a greaser.Yeah I was a Mommas boy(Rest in Peace Momma).I had an italian style leather jacket I never wore.Black and shiny and it was really cool.My aunt gave it to me.i would only wear it at home.But now it was going to be my best friend.I cuffed my jeans,put on a t shirt that I cut the sleeves off and I had some roper cowboy boots.We put some 3 flowers in my hair and I slicked it up.It looked so awesome a d I got a lot of confidence in me after that.i went to school the next day like that and the bully noticed me and kept trying to figure out who this was.All my friends loved my new Greaser look and finally he was able to come out of me and live.But the bully figured out who I was and he came up to me and started to swing at me and I moved quickly out of the way of the punch.So he did something i wasn't expecting.He grabbed my neck and started choking me with both hands tightly.I couldn't breath and was choking to death.Be said there's no room for another bully here.Thats when I kneed him in his balls and he let go and with a chokey voice i told him as he was staggering in pain.Who says I want to be a bully.Im the only Greaser here and that's fine with me.Dont ever fuck with me again.Got it? He looked at me and knodded yes.My throat hurt the rest of the day.But for sure that was the day the Greaser in me was born 👍

I got into it through my Interest in music. In 1978 I was a 23 year old aspiring singer -songwriter. The Buddy Holly Story came out, it influenced me and I started the transition to the 50's style. Everyone called me Elvis so I would respond "Buddy Holly"!

I started Greasing in the 8th grade. I always had a leather jacket 24/7. I then discovered that greasers were a subculture and I figured that it was different then I discovered you and learned.
Pretty late but my story is simple, I first learnt about greasers from fallout 3, grease etc, I loved the music and had a leather jacket, last year when I was 11-12 I met a lad who was one, he was pretty chill, I decided to become one joined 2 gangs and yeah. That’s bout it

I got intrested by playing Mafia 2 (best 50s-videogame) and after I watched some greaser videos on youtube I advanced to clothing like a greaser/ buying greaser stuffs & got a hairstyle(spring 2017, 19 years old)

I got into being a greaser because I hung out at a auto shop slash junkyard I like to work on cars I got to meet a lot of greasers that way I like the style I like what it represented, and how close greasers were at the time so I decided to join and been doing it for the better part of nine years now
I had always been interested in the cultura of greasers. But classic style. But more of the cholo greasers. Kind of that stand and deliver kind. Never fully went and dressed like a greaser but really got into the modernized cholo style. Till I got to 19, my sister started doing the rockabilly chicks hair with the victory rolls and crap. She told me how sick I would look like a greaser, she being like my 2nd mom to me I listened and I fell In love with it. I was working out at the time so I had the build good. Tucked shirts and cuffed pants cuffed sleeves chucks and slip on vans were my style. Murray's then moved up to suavecito.
Stopped around 25 once my first kid came. Also I got lazy and outta shape. Im trying to get back my build and get the style back on. Im 29 now so ive got crunch time now
