  • What if the US had decisively succeeded in it's invasion of British Canada during the War of 1812, and annexed the territory into the United States? How would Canada joining the US affect American politics, and might this encourage the annexing of other territories like Greenland?

wouldn't it make more sense that slavery would expand into most of Louisiana because of the northern territories and Mexico keep the Yucatan, most of Cali? especially after already reaching the west after the war of 1812. also Rio grande was dissolved years before with its leaders being killed or turn coating. also in regards to territorial disputes with Mexico or even how much land they would take what would be the input from an even more liberal north seeing as Canada was already on the verge abolishing slavery and would there even be a reason for a war seeing as this would be an overstretch in manpower and resources and would Brittain intervene if it saw that the U.S. was becoming too powerful, I say this because the only reason the U.S. annexed Texas was because Brittain offered to take Texas off of Mexico's hands and keep slavery from spreading. also, I know this is off topic but don't you think that instead of a Mexican revolution there'd be a nationalist movement sometime in the late 1800s early 1900s (1867or earlier -1917) rise up against the monarchy to take back its northern territories to include the parts of the U.S. where Hispanics are a plurality or have much influence because Porfirio Diaz didn't come to power or hell the monarchy maybe even encouraging this (Maximilian was very liberal for the time and nationalism was seen as unity and an end to monarchy and foreign domination something the old order did not sit with well) with French backing as a way to gain better control over a common people and culture similar to what Bismark did for Germany also possible military endorsement from Spain as they were under Bourbons, had shared culture, allies to France and knows U.S. is eyeing Cuba, if not help from Germany and Austria is Probable because blood ties and imperialism but most likely France and Spain (France would want to lose its power over Mexico). Although personally given the situation you set up I doubt the War of the Reform would even happen (France would not invade) and an even more Nationalistic Mexico would come out of 1848 one willing to side with the northern states in exchange for the land back.

It'd be interesting if such a state ended up joining the US rather than being independent. This would leave British Columbia, Yukon, Alberta, the Northwestern Territories, Saskatchewan, Nunavut and Manitoba in the hands of he US and Quebec independent. This would leave Canada as just Ontario and the Atlantic provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. Another interesting question would be what if then British won? How would the creation of a Native American buffer state to restrict westward expansion change the map of what is now the western United States? Would Britain have given the Mississippi and Alabama Gulf Coast, the only piece of land to permanently change hands during the war, back to Spain. What demands would they have made if they were in a position to dominate negotiations? Would Britain have kept New Ireland? What would a British dominated Great Lakes look like? How would guaranteed unrestricted access to the Mississippi River for trade by the British have effected the economy of the area? So many interesting what-ifs.

we did win though, America tried to annex land in Canada and we (along with Canadians) stopped them therefore we won the war while America still claims it as a draw thinking if no lands is exchanged no one won (based on that logic every defence of a country or castle is a draw). We just don't go on about it like America does because we were busy fighting (at the time) the largest war since Rome in Gaul in terms of the size of the armies. Neither time America fought the British Empire did the empire even try to fight back because it was occupied with more important matters (which america seems to forget)

What if the United States was a constituency of the European empires, an economic asset that unites differing nations through a shared source of wealth? It would be split into several parts, with the Spaniards ruling Florida, the British controlling the East Coast, Russia colonizing Hawaii, etc. It would enrich the different nations, allowing their governments to remain popular due to economic prosperity. This opens up the possibility that many liberal revolutions that occurred in our timeline, would instead become minor revolts, thereby ensuring the survival of several monarchies and social conservatism in general. If America falls into revolution, then all of Europe falls into revolution. America would be dependent on Europe, and Europe would be dependent on America.

It's about 18th century politics and ethics, where "liberal" means someone who believes in the people having the right to decide how they are governed, and the idea that the power to rule originates from the people being rule and that people have rights innate to their personhood, rather than having privileges that can be taken away at the whims of a king, not modern politics where "liberal" in america means social democracy/democratic socialism. also, he didn't say he liked the idea of a powerful king... he proposed an alternate timeline of history... What makes it more funny is that even while Britain was in a death struggle with Napoleon, still managed to repel multiple invasions into Canada, take 200 mile of coastline, take Washington, burn it, blockade and ruin the economy of the U.S, but still to this day: "ThE U.s WoN tHe WaR"

@@CentralAftermath The War of 1812 is kinda like the Vietnam war, in some senses. The British did some impressive battles and steamrolled many battles, yet choose to negotiate an end to the war due political and public backing ending back in Britain itself ending. Vietnam likewise lost every battle to America but America left due to political backing disappearing back home too. Vietnam "won" the Vietnam war due to the result of the political side of things, as too did America win political victories from the war of 1812.
The differences being America in the war of 1812 did win some battles. The Battle of Lake Erie essentially resulted in the US retaking Detroit and after the war assured the British couldn't block America continuing westward expansion aka Manifest Destiny. If this hadn't happened Britain would have blocked America from becoming the country it is today.
Further after Napoleon's defeat and the end of the War of 1812 Britain just didn't have a need to capture more American sailors. Thus America could claim another win to the public.
So yes, America didn't expand into Canada as per their goal but they did remove the British from what is now the American Midwest, which was a goal of the British. This victory allowed America to expand into the territory purchased in the Louisiana purchase. Basically America wanted to be able to expand North and West, they won the ability to expand West. If they lost the Battle of Lake Erie, then the modern world could look very different with California being either still part of Mexico or Canadian or British.
So it was a political win, not as stellar as America wanted though but a win nonetheless. Like Vietnam winning the political war but losing every battle.
As an American with a British father, I'm kinda neutral here. America, Canada and Britain all won political victories from this war. All sides can claim victory or be deemed to have been defeated if you spin this war correctly.

@@dillonblair6491 no it's not lmao. Impressment ended before peace talks even began, nullifying a U.S cause for war.
"The acquisition of Canada will be a mere matter of marching" (we all know how that turned out) That was evidently U.S' ultimate goal. It is even explained in the video why that is true. It failed. No ground was gained, no ground was lost in peace talks. Status quo.
If you read my other comment would see how I also said that neither did the British and I meant it for that very reason.
Your reasoning seems to be: "Britain stopped using natives" and the previously mentioned impressment.

More than a few historians have pointed out the US did win in a way in this war as it survived (again) fighting the UK. While the US on land generally fumbled everything it did, it's actions at sea did get real attention from the Royal Navy. While the UK did not officially end impressment of US cits or stop arming/encouraging the tribes, in reality they largely did put both practices to rest.
The post war status quo while held up as an example of a failure of US war goals still had the US surviving as a nation w/out losing territory or treasure to our opponents. Given what happened to most of the UK's enemies during this period, status quo was not too bad after all

I find this scenario questionable at best. Most particularly I doubt (1) Your two American states would remain more-or-less ideologically the same for several generations, but compromising sufficiently to simply re-united, and (2) That such a state would never be challenged by the Old World, especially the UK, as well as having the kind of specific influences described here. History is in fact full of wild cards that suddenly shift events in unexpected directions. The election of Abrahm Lincoln comes to mind--not that something would have sparked the Southern states to secede, but his skill at running the war. All one has to do is look at the other candidates in the 1860 elections and extrapolate from there, looking at the various decisions and policies that administration pursued which shaped the United States history to this day. Likewise look at what happened with different Presidents during different wars to see how things could have gone differently, from Woodrow Wilson to Richard Nixon to George W. Bush or the current occupant.

@vicwa5383 not sure where you get your ideas from. But if the US had booted Britain out of Canada, it very much was looking to annex those lands. Not as states because the population was not large enough yet for statehood.
But they very much wanted 90% of what is now Canada. The only place where your argument has some merit is Congress did not want to annex the french-speaking area along the lower st-lawrence, which was too totally different from America. But outside of that, the Maritimes, Ontario and western Canada were all coveted to be part of an expanding United States.

    • @vicwa5383

@@michaelbruvolt4221 I disagree. My primary reference would be Alan Taylor's "Civil War of 1812" on the vote against annexation of the Canadas. I did further research on my own (on the voting records that Alan Taylor sourced) and the second vote was primarily on annexation of Florida. The Canadas were introduced as away to persuade the Federalists to jump on board, but this potential truce was eventually squashed when the Jeffersonian Republicans suggested that the Canadas could be flipped as a bargaining chip and returned to the British. It soured the Federalists enough that they voted against annexation (just like they voted against the war) as they had no reason to ever promote this war. The annexation of Florida (with the Canadas) was voted against on July 2nd, 1812. It was at that point that the Federalists would never agree to the annexation of the Canadas; they wanted this war lost as "Mr. Madison's War."
The level of distrust between the Federalists and Jeffersonian Republicans was ignited by the Henry letters as a British spy sold fake papers to Madison (many years earlier) and the Federalists were even against the Louisiana Purchase prior to that instance. The British were trying to create internal strife between the two American political parties, which unintentionally ended up with British themselves as a target for war.
Another historian that stressed the war was not about the Canadas but about impressment is Donald Hickey. The United States barely voted in favor of going to war with the British and the New England states (notably through Maine by Massachusetts influence) eventually smuggled goods for the British. Massachusetts was venomously against the war effort and sacrifice Maine as a result.
I look at it this way: The Americans wanted the Canadas about as much as the British wanted access to the Mississippi River ("choke point") or the native buffer state. I can see the Canadas as a secondary goal, but was not a deal breaker in negotiations.

The War of 1812 is discussed in radically different terms in the U.S. & Canada.
That war is almost exclusively discussed in terms of naval warfare in the U.S. & in terms of the border skirmishes in Canada. I suppose only the border skirmishes are relevant to Canada, her Navy having always been relatively limited & relying on the British Royal Navy for protection prior to the collapse of the British Empire.
The War of 1812 is well known in America but it is the emphasis on the Naval aspect (the primary aspect) which causes confusion. The U.S. understood that war relative to the Pseudo War, a clandestine war conducted under Washington w/o declaration where he was allied to Britain again. Remember, @ this point in history Canada had no sovereign or autonomous gov't, only colonial officials.
Both those wars were about the principle of "freedom of the seas." The French, under Napoleon, were attacking our commercial ships & so we helped the Royal Navy defeat Napoleon's fleet. This WAS during the Napoleonic Wars. When the French navy was on the skids later on, they started using American false flags to escape constant British harassment. This was used as a pretext by the British for harassing American ships.
THIS IS WHAT PROVOKED THE U.S. TO DECLARE WAR AGAIN ON BRITAIN.
The British had hoped to use their Canadian provinces as a safe military base from which to undermine U.S. sovereignty. By proactively attacking them on what they regarded as safe ground North of the border we knocked them on their back foot & prevented a mass invasion from that ground. The political need to reassure their Canadian colonists was precisely what the U.S. hoped to accomplish, when you're defending you're NOT attacking.
If possible, the U.S. had hoped to expand our territory @ the expense of British territorial claims to the North, that was never a primary objective. We were only interested in tying up most British forces to the NORTH of the border. Ironlically, that the War of 1812 is often used as a defining moment in Canadian nationalism actually shows the success of the U.S. war objectives.
After the war, Canada was de-militarized (mostly) & the Royal Navy never again challenged our Navy or merchant marine & no effective, defensible British military ground was secured in America as had happened in the War of Independence.
A resounding victory, only seeming less then that precisely b/c of the great power the U.S. achieved after that war. A testament to that very success actually.

@@MonsieurDean I believe that if he won the insurgencies in Latin America would become stronger just like how it happened with Cuba. Still does not mean they would win (even though it would help) but it could seriously upset the dynamic. Socialist Bolivia would face a dangerous situation though, if the previous goverment collapsed let's say in 1971 the revolutionaries would have 2 possibly friendly regimes, one being allende in Chile and the other being velasco's left wing junta in Peru. Both of them were overthrown by 1975 IRL but if the bolivian were somehow able to save them I could see a war between them and Brazil and perhaps Argentina, depending on how the dirty war goes there.

So what if the Brits burnt down a house when compared to gaining full access to the Midwest and Louisiana territory. In the long run, America gained far more than it lost from the war of 1812.
Was it the stellar victory America dreamed of? Absolutely not!
Did it beneficially serve American long term interests? Absolutely yes!
Further the Battle of Baltimore proved to the British they could never retake America without far more troops and ships. They could raid America, they could blockade America, but they could not hold it.
Another beneficial result was America continuing to build up their Navy as a result of the War of 1812.

Whenever people from the USA refer to the "war of 1812", they are talking of a minor skirmish far away from the real war of 1812!
There is even a piece of music about the war that actually meant something that year. It is called "The 1812 Overture".
Napoleon Bonaparte had decided to invade Russia. Historically, this has never been a good idea and this invasion was pretty much the precursor to when another megalomaniac did exactly the same 128 years later. Napoleon got his arse handed to him and, although he actually did get to Moscow, he then retreated back to warmer parts but left a lot of his army along the way.
The invasion of Russia in 1812 made a difference to the world. It helped lead to the defeat of a wannabe world empire for good 3 years later in 1815.
The USA losing its war in 1812 learned nothing significant other than to not upset Canadians.
The 1812 Overture is really good. If you ever do that war, you have the background music ready made for it!
