    One reason injuries are on the rise overall is that kids start playing at an intense level at younger and younger ages, and by the time they get to the league their bodies have levels of wear and tear that are usually only seen in older players

      its interesting that lebron is still going at 40 though. rumors on lonzo ball coming back too. maybe they have more wear and tear but also way more recovery. so that window is massive. lonzo has until age 40 to become something. thats another 14 years...

    If Hali never got injured, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. Embid wouldn't have won MVP last season had he had the same injury and missed games he has now. The idea that lessor players could possibly make All-NBA teams due to this rule is laughable. Great players get snubbed from All-NBA all time. PG, Pascal, KAT, and Kawhi didn't make All-NBA last year for not playing enough games. This isnt new and the NBA doesn't have a problem.

    Not the NBA fault. Why would I pay full price for a player that is 60% available. Longevity, how they take care of their body, what food they eat, how much soft landing training they go through, all those things are skills a player can learn. Some players are forced to stretch while others want to stretch. If I am paying Lebron-type money, I expect that player to have lebron type longevity habits...
    Enforce the 65 games minimum. It's a job. You don't show up, you can't get paid. Adjust your game to be less risk adversing. They're millionaires, they'll be fine. Real workers can get hurt, and will still show up without any type of resource these divas have.

    People can complain about the new rule but it has had the impact the NBA desired with fewer star players resting and many players more games than ever before. That’s why the NBA isn’t going to change the rule at least not drastically. At most they might lower the threshold to 60 games. Also let’s keep in mind that the players union were the ones to sign off on this so they knew what was coming. And I disagree with your argument that this rule has lowered the product at all. I have watched plenty of NBA games this year and a lot of them have been super competitive with a good number of players putting in work on both sides of the floor. I also don’t think the number of games was arbitrary. 65 games is roughly 80% of the season which is a perfectly fair standard to set when voting on end of season awards because availability should be rewarded.

    I'm kinda tires of hearing the "they shouldn't tie money to awards" the award should be enough not the money. I hate saying this but back in the day I would always hear how getting the award it self and the acknowledgment is the point of getting. I remember back when Dennis Rodman was with the Pistons he won an award and he cried not because he was getting a huge check with it it's because the saw how good he was and rewarded him. It really makes me disconnect when I hear on top of the millions they make they can't get more.

    If you are not available to play for a minimun amount of games, how can you be selected to be amongst players who do?
    It has been sad before by players themselves, the best ability is availability.
    IHonestly, if you can't play the games consistently, you shouldn't be played like the players who do.

  • @sandybeachsean6880

    Why do you need to get an All NBA Award when you can’t show up for work 80% of the time. Do you think at your job if you showed up 80% or less of the time (that is 1 day off each week in a 5 day workweek) you would get a raise, reward or be recognized?

  • @PharaohsNews
    @PharaohsNews Před 2 měsíci +6

    I feel like if you’re consistently getting hurt and missing games then you aren’t owed the max amount of money.
    Don’t really blame teams not wanting to take on the what could be bad money.

  • @Jo-Mamaa
    @Jo-Mamaa Před 2 měsíci +2

    No. Players returning from injuries should be determined by team doctors and medical staff--is it safe for players to resume regular play. Without this rule, it can be argued that players, prior seasons, sat out more than they were medically deemed to. Players and teams need to consider the risk to reward from the decision to resume play.

    The bonus for making an all NBA team is obviously too big. If it's significantly less I'm sure they won't be complaining so much. It's not a huge ask for players to play 80% of the games

    NBA didnt screw this up. They just made the unofficial rule, official. Most of the awards had a 65 game rule attached to them anyway, as people that win them normally play that amount. So just making the unwritten rule a written rule isnt changing anything except guys now know they really can get away with anything. As an adult you should be able to make the decision to get healthy for your team, over rushing a return for personal accolades. You already got your long term super max contract, are you really gonna be that upset cuz you missed out on 50 million when you already have 300 coming your way over the life time of the contract? lol

  • @Aurorawindu
    @Aurorawindu Před 2 měsíci +1

    If a player misses half a season (even if due to genuine injuries), do we still want that player to win those awards?
    I know it sucks if Hali missed the 65-game mark by just a couple games, but the line has to be drawn somewhere?
    Should it be 60 games instead? Or 55? That might be worth a discussion but at some point, availability should matter.
    And I'm not sure I agree that this will make the players even softer - steals, blocks, rebounds all usually require hustle. If you don't hustle for the rebound simply because Joel Embiid is next to you and you're worried about injuries, then chances are Embiid is more likely to get that extra rebound and pad his stats even more on his way to MVP, All-NBA etc., and you miss out.
    And just look at Kawhi Leonard - all of a sudden now he's fully healthy and doesn't require load management! (Sorry as a Spurs fan, I'm biased on this one lol)

  • @bezllama3325
    @bezllama3325 Před 2 měsíci +1

    they should make it 60 games or 55, the thing they should get rid of is that the refs are so clearly waiting for the shot to not go down to call a foul it makes no sense and its always happened to some extent but its getting so much worse
    Also the schedule sucks making less games makes no sense why are teams have 3 or 4 days off in the middle of the season like its an all star break?

  • @reggiebanksrb10
    @reggiebanksrb10 Před 2 měsíci

    What they should do is incorporate another break in the season. Maybe a couple of em. 2 5 day stretches, one pre all star, one post.

  • @ThePenitentSquirrel

    Haliburton, Mitchell, and Embiid are not good use cases for this argument. On Sportrac If you scroll down past this season (the last season of his rookie deal) on Haliburton, he makes roughly seven more money starting next year and considerably more by the end. Haliburton would actually benefit from sitting the remainder of the season and get ready for next season where he has substantial locked in value.
    Donovan Mitchell presently has $32,600,060 Guaranteed which is 100% of his contract. The next two seasons of 34 & 37 are also Guaranteed. Which means even if he broke every bone in his body and could never play again the Cav's would be on the hook for over 103 Million on top of the 107 million he made in his first 7 years. So, 10 years for 210 Million, a near quarter billion !? Not Bad.
    Embiid... Do really need to talk about? The Dude is making 47 Million this year and then above 50 million guaranteed for the next three years. His total earnings before getting his next three paychecks is 214 Million afterward closer to a third of a Billion dollars. Do you know what he got incentives for winning the MVP last year? the large sum of 850k! The Dude is fine for the rest of his damn life.

    Why the hell should I care about millionaires losing out on a couple million its about the fans and the product and their was no reason for me to watch a game last year because a key player mostly stars players were load managing but because of the new rule all of a sudden a bunch of player are on pace to play the most games they played in years its a necessary rule if you can't come to work at least 80 percent of the time you don't deserve a bonus

    Who cares about the NBA in 2024?

  • @notperfect101
    @notperfect101 Před 2 měsíci

    Well I think the same argument can be turned around as well. Yes, being a professional you should play when you‘re fit. But also your job as a professional is to take care of your body and rest when you‘re not fine. Forcing it for a few million more or some award when you‘re already a multimillionaire that never again has to worry about anything in their life (at least moneywise) seems just greedy. Your job is to be in shape and help your team win, for the fans. So I think the players are equally responsible here. Also I think Haliburton was shooting well above his average to start the season, so a comedown might not come as a surprise.
    But anyway I agree the only sensible solution is to reduce the number of games per season. 82 is just ridiculous, I know of no pro sports league in any sport that comes even close to that number. But as said, probably won‘t happen - again because of greed.

    • @tkrozner95
      @tkrozner95 Před 2 měsíci

      If it's reduced, then players have to get reduced pay as well.

  • @bepatientIhaveautism
    @bepatientIhaveautism Před 2 měsíci +10

    tihs whole discussion is being dragged out because the owners won't implement the obvious solution because of greed: shortening the season and getting rid of back to backs altogether.

    • @julianbrewster4633

      So they could play 82 games when they rode in buses across the country but they can’t with private flights and full medical teams traveling to each game? Cmon it’s greedy for the players to want to make 30+ million dollars while cutting out opportunities for the fans to see them play, it would only damage the league long term
