    Nice video John, great to see an install video on the Morin oil cooler for the Monkey and with the way it’s suppose to work with that head stud I think I’ll give this mod a miss for my bike

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  Před 4 lety

      Thanks! With the one half sheet of instructions coming in Chinese or a language not familiar to me, I think this will help people. Probably pretty easy on the Grom, but a little different for the Monkey. I too don’t think the cooler is too effective using the head stud method of oil delivery either, and will probably go the way of a side cover with oil ports route in the future

  • @Jinni5781
    @Jinni5781 Před 3 lety

    I am trying to put on on my monkey and this video is very helpful. One question though; do you need to put in more oil or even have to prefill the oil cooler?

  • @daveshere9969
    @daveshere9969 Před rokem

    Does this also come with the intake ? I’ve been wanting a intake on my monkey and there all pricy, I feel like for $170 you get an oil cooler and intake ? Seems too good to be true or am i buggin

  • @UnknownOverLand
    @UnknownOverLand Před 4 lety +1

    Awesome job on the video (as usual). That's an interesting install, it's have already pointed out what seems like questionable decisions on TB Parts side of things. Not many options on a stock head, though, the kitaco side cover has made life a little simpler on my install, but cool to see some innovation at least.

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you!! At first I thought TB made this cooler, but now see that Morin makes it and TB probably just imports them. I believe the Kitaco side cover is the way to go as well and I’ll eventually end up with that to help make life a bit easier on oil changes and to help this cooler work a bit better

      @John5XR  Před 4 lety

      @stelio yeah I’m not sure what’s going on with that. I know TB is a distributor for a lot of items as well and think this is the case with these shocks. Where they might not have them on their site, but sell them to other shops for retailing. I know MNNTHBX has them on their site as well as TBolt.

    Thanks for another informative video! This is a job I will be doing tomorrow on my Monkey Bike! fitting the MSX 125 Morin oil cooler! I have already fitted the Kitaco Clutch cover so my oil lines will go direct from the oil cooler to the clutch cover! So I think I will not need that cover that goes on top of your engine head! the one with the oil port? I think I will not have the issues with clearance as the bracket should bolt directly the same as yours on the two top head bolts! I think I will not have the problem with clearance from the front mudguard as I have already fitted a Kitaco front mudguard lowering kit? The Morin kit certainly looks a lot nicer with the oil lines than the Kitaco oil lines and cooler! I will post my findings and let you know how I get on! Thanks for the great videos and keep them coming!

    I have just watched this.
    Am I correct but one of those hoses does not actually pass oil through it and is just fixed on a cylinder head bolt?
    If that is the case; surely there is no circulation through the radiator as the oil is only coming in to the radiator and not returning back to the engine?

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  Před 3 lety +1

      It’s a channeled head stud that’s designed to allow oil to travel along it. The oil flow in these engines push oil through that stud to the head, so this is why this cooler is designed this way. How much oil it moves is debatable

  • @bnolsen
    @bnolsen Před 2 lety

    Honda Grom here. Stud torque is 8 ft-lbs. I had no trouble using a pair of 8x1.25 bolts as jam nuts to remove the original stud and torque the new one down. Stock instructions are pretty bad.

  • @johntheaccountant5594
    @johntheaccountant5594 Před 3 lety

    Do you think the pump has enough strength to push the oil round that oil cooler especially as you are mounting the radiator so high up.
    Do you think it would really help with cooling?
    I ask because the Honda Monkey/Grom is manufactured in Thailand for the world market.
    They are popular in Thailand, especially the Grom and I have not heard anyone complain about overheating etc.

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  Před 3 lety +1

      An oil cooler is mostly useful for big bore kits and after considerable engine mods. On a stock engine, no, it’s not necessary

  • @nekatrall
    @nekatrall Před 4 lety +1

    Morin does make one for the monkey 125. Their solution for the return is back to the oil fill plug

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  Před 4 lety +1

      I had to look this up, and see it on eBay. That looks more complex actually, and still uses the channeled head stud. It is however a good solution for using with the stock air box. Thanks for pointing this out 🙏

  • @victorray9176
    @victorray9176 Před 2 lety +1

    Hey John, was just looking at this video and seen you had to modify your bracket for the Monkey install.I almost think it wasn't even designed for the Grom. I put one of these kits on my wifes 2020 Honda Grom with a TB Big bore kit. I mounted it the way directions show coming off of the 2 bottom head bolts. Needless to say we are on our second bracket. the tabs on the bracket keep breaking off where it mounts to the head. I have a2015 Grom where the cooler mounts to the tappet and haven't had any issues. It seems to me that the cooler might not be cut and dried install for either the Grom or the Monkey.
    It also seems that the pieces that are part of the oil cooler assembly tend to rattle from vibration. Im just curious if anyone else has had some of the same issues. makes me think there should be some kind of redesign for the bracket or a relocation to the tappet cover.
    as always great video thanks for the time you spend to inform us.

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  Před 2 lety

      Yeah I don’t think the cooler is designed as good as it could’ve been. I couldn’t have it mounted so low because of my off road riding, so I had to modify the bracket to put it on top. It didn’t really seem like it was doing anything anyways, and I feel the feed method of the channel bolt is ineffective

  • @davidonley3095
    @davidonley3095 Před 4 lety +2

    Are you using a high volume oil pump with this kit?, it's really not doing to much cooling, that setup would only cool the rockers and cam, at most, the Kitaco and Takegawa setups cools the big end and the underside of piston plus the rocker cam assembly's

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  Před 4 lety +1

      No, stock pump. I agree it’s not as useful in this configuration either. I shot this video to help TB Parts see if the cooler worked on the Monkey installation-wise. For the best efficiency, a side cover with ports would be the better option for ultimate oil cooling.

    Ive read a discussion about that oil cooler installed in the air cooled engine is bad?.. because it slowerd down the oil pressure from the oil pump going to the designated area such as crank shaft ,connecting rod spitting to the piston. The oil coming from the crank shaft spitting to the piston cant get enough oil to spit because the oil cooler is sucking up oil pressure..

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  Před 3 lety

      Not sure if it’s bad, but I don’t think it steals much oil at all as I don’t feel the bolt method of feeding oil is too efficient

    I'm very impressed with your modification skills! 1) how much would charge to make me t same bracket bc I love t placement of t cooler and I cant/wont do that kind of work 2) I wonder if my chimera intake dimensions wld conflict with your new bracket design, hmmm 3) do u have the super flow oil pump on your bike 4) are u worried abt stealing critical oil flow from the engine and thus increasing engine temp/wear?
    My 181 bbk blew up due to heat n sustained highway speed. I'm having it fixed and adding a digital engine head temp read out. Then I will run around monitoring engine temp under different conditions b4 I decide to do t cooler. Since I know how 181 bbk feels b4 death I shld be able to get some good Intel without doing serious damage to t engine. Thx!

      Thanks! I’ve done this kind of “reshaping” so many times with my racecars, so I was confident I could make it work. 1. I am thinking of designing a bracket like this and selling them, so yes. How much, I don’t know yet cause it all depends on how much it costs to manufacture them. I have good manufacturing connections though from our Miata business. Stay tuned on that. 2. That’s a good question and I am not sure! It might hit other intake designs and I really custom designed it to work with my bike, which has the Mtake. 3. I don’t have any mods done to the oiling system. 4. To be honest, I’m not sure if I understand how this cooler gets any oil at all! The channeled stud doesn’t seem like it would flow too much oil to me, and if I am gonna get serious with an oil cooler, I’m gonna go with the side cover that has the oil ports on it near the oil pump, with an upgraded pump

      I added a little extra oil, but I don't feel the cooler even flowed much oil, it's kind of a novelty part and the right way to add a cooler is by way of plumbing it to the oil pump, which requires the Takagawa replacement side cover with the oil ports.

    Absolute JUNK.. I watched this, then ordered one for my sons Grom, installation was easy, however, the new headstud (with a channel cut for oil) is supposed to seal against the bracket. I tried three different washer setups and it still leaked. The actual cooler was ok, however, you really have to watch the lines from the tappet cover to the cooler, as flat as possible with no loops. Had a pretty good loop at first and the bike temp rose, however the cooler was cool to the touch and it leaked at the return line at the head. Re routed the line to a flat position and got better oil flow, however, the return line would not seal at the head.
