      dear Rhonda, thanks so much for giving this information to us freely, for the purpose of everyone having a better and actual knowledge. sorry to ask here, not a serious place to begin yt, but i hope u read, cause im hesitant to go to a dr here in costa, afraid they are not updated enough. im allergic to red meat...apparently not that many studdies, but may be a specific tick bite, which is a possibility since i rescue animals, although i cant kjnow rexactly when it started cause im vegetarian fro 20 years, but after a serious anemia at my 28s, i kind of went flexitarian, cause unfortunately where i live vegan supplements are hard to come by and expensive. a few times i tried pork or took a bite of a bbq. took me a while to realize since i only ate little here and there...until an epic blow up a few months ago, like i was allergic to peanuts and i ate a whole kilo, swollen everywhere, difficulty to breathe, horrible cramps. anyway u get the picture. my question is, have u heard about this? u know anywhere with updated info? i dont have lyme disease or other symptoms and also, do you think the vaccine could have been a problem if i had decided to have it? thank u and sorry for the inappropiate space to ask. =)

    Anecdote - I struggled with bipolar disorder and anxiety for years. I've been doing a ~2.5:1 nutrient-dense keto diet for about 3.5 years, in that time my anxiety has been cut by 50% and I haven't had a significant mood episode. I'm actually able to work now and will be taking a job overseas in about a month. Keto (as an *add-on* to my quietiapine and lamotrigine) has given me my life back.

      add kefir to your diet! Do some water fast and restart your gut / repopulate. You might also also want to figure out which hormone is causing it...is it dopamine or norepinephrine or seratonin or your gut ? or vagus ? anxiety is complex. could even be your posture forward head pushing on a nerve etc Be careful about eye movement, Rest your eyes and do vagal exercises and deep stomach breaths

      Decrease the acytle choline dominance in your body and raise the norepinephrine dominance i.e. by fasting 3 days with one powder spoon of Rhodiola one every month and less water. So that the dopamine dominance decreases .

      Lamotrigine decreases the glutamate to decrease A.ch which will raise norepinephrine. While quitapine antagonists DA straight !

    A lot of us have dramatically improved numbers on carnivore or animal-based diets. Improved trigs, HDL, etc. All enviable. Except LDL, which is way high. Only, where is the proof that the high LDL is a problem? Maybe I just use energy well, now. Less fiber is a feature, not a bug, for many of us with a connective tissue disease. I have hEDS, POTS, MCAS, Hashimoto's, sleep siezures, etc - all of which are improved. I'm 53, 22% bf, could be a bikini model. My gut has never been better. The fewer plants I eat, the less inflamed I am. Animal-based rules.

      Look into the study about high LDL in people eating a very nutrient dense diet. The syndrome is called ‘ low mass hyper responder ‘ basically don’t worry about the high ldl .

      hi fellow zebra! may I ask a few questions? I've heard of only a handful of people with EDS(all heds) all with great benefits. ME TOO. I feel best with most meat but havent gone more than a few weeks..I need to... however none of us had gastroparesis or severe mcas. Do you know of anyone in the severe category that got over the hump from major starvation to reasonably well? the worst downside for me is when im nauseated and I cant drink or eat electrolytes as much and my neuro symptoms go nuts (i also may have a csf leak). last questions: how long have you been carnivore and do you supplement electrolytes? if so, how much? I've tried just doing sodium to taste and mag biglycinate but i feel so much better with potassium. I appreciate if I could pick your brain. so glad for your improvements.. most of the groups on fb get angsty but the cussack protocol group is more accepting. I also have a carnitine deficiency and my geneticist kinda I told you so'd even though its common without keto 😅 I have a "keto for chronic disease management" group if you wanna chat more! cheers, and "happy" EDS awareness month ❤

      Need to consider micronutrients and phytochemicals with plant based foods involved in a balanced clean diet and eliminating processed foods, sugar and refined carbs, for long term health and slowing the aging process, gut health....

    This was excellent. Thanks Rhonda. All the stuff on Keto I see online is mostly silly. This was a nuanced and evidence based view. I especially appreciated when Dom clearly delineated what's scientific consensus or evidence vs case notes and individual experience. I've been time restricted feeding for years and you've just encouraged me to gain some of those benefits of ketosis with an early morning zone 2 cardio session.

    When it started keto 5 or 6 years ago, I was able to bring my weight down even while taking olsnzepine. I'm now taking far less medication, and I weigh far less. The biggest problem I've had with keto, is the hostility to it from the medical community. I do eat a lot of saturated fat and red meat, however.

      I did keto for about eight or nine months I think I dropped 20 pounds I felt the best I’ve ever felt in my life but then something happened I kind of got this thing in my head that I was too thin and went off of it I don’t do a ton of carbs but I have cut back on my proteins I just can’t seem to get it in my head to get back on keto but I did really enjoy the feeling I got from it and everybody said I look great any advice?

      @@michellev.8739 Changing our minds about our habits is hard. I have spiritual support that helps me make changes, but I find to kickstart keto, intermittent fasting helps. Don't snack before bed, then skip breakfast and lunch, and I then have a small snack before dinner, and then a full meal. If I go all in all at once for dinner, I overindulge. But I also didn't used to have carb- centered snack foods in the house early on, and today I snack, but on tasty low carb foods.

      I was on olanzipine at one point as well, i gained 4 stone on it lol. The only thing that was able to keep the weight down was a ketogenic diet. well done on the weight loss btw, i know how hard it is on olanzipine.

    Excellent talk on keto with Dom! The conversation brings back some memories of when the ketogenic diet was slowing starting to become popular like a decade ago and health experts/doctors like Mercola, Rosedale, Mark, Dave, etc were recommending it. Awesome refresher for me 🖐 I gotta start tracking my ketones again for a little bit.

      They say that ketosis lower the oxidative stress, inflammation and proliferation. But, is this state not good with a patient with cancer. Is not it ? Why? Because such a condition needs oxidative stress to damage the cancerous cells. What do you think ?

      @@sberznji exogenous antioxidant supplements are not good once one has cancer and trying to fight it. So you are right in a way ..but Ketosis is a different beast, starving cancer cells, stimulates apoptosis. Chemo is the stress. So Ketosis works synergistically with chemo. Not a medical pro but that's what I recall from reading about this from various sources. Any experts out here reading this and want to chime in?

    I started keto 4 months ago. At the beginning my ketones were high, 3.5. My mind was so clear. I felt amazing. I now find it difficult to keep my ketones up, not sure why, maybe too much protein. The brain fog has returned somewhat, sadly, though my weight has stayed low. Getting my cholesterol checked the end of the week, if it's good I'll keep trying to get those ketones up.

      Late to the game, but consider dropping your PUFA and upping your SFA intake. High protein can actually surprisingly be toxic (unless you're a Croatian athlete juicing on PEDs and steroids) unless you put it to use like exercise. for there is only so much storage in the amino acid pool

      @@sleepinglaffey3886 I started Ketovore 7 months ago to stop 2 monthly seizures. I just started MCT with 75% C8 & am waiting to see what happens at the end of this month. For some reason (hormoonal?) they come at the same time my hormones changed, I am now 62. I have been trying to work out which Dietician or Dr would be best to try to get a consultation with. It is hard with so many & they all have different ideas, especially when it comes to vegetables & fruit.

      Your mind was clear because your body had enough fat stores to consume, but once you hit a certain low body fat %, I believe you will potentially experience brainfog due to lack of sugar in the brain, that is at least what I experience. I do weight lifting and when I am done bulking (storing fat while getting much muscle as possible), I go on a keto diet, and it's amazing how fast I lose weight and how good I feel, but once I hit a certain level of weight loss, the body won't burn more fat into ketones, it's trying to spend as little fat as possible, and this is where I personally get brain fogs and start to feel horrible, at this point MCT oil is a huge help to combat brain fog but I don't think a low carb/low fat keto diet is good once you a low in body fat, you need to start add in good healthy fats once you're on your ideal weight .

    You are the metabolic Queen! Thank you. Can you do a deep dive into what I believe is now the #1autoimmune issue for women : Hashimoto's hypothyroidism. MOST women take the Synthroid, get checked, have tried natural dedicated thyroid, Cytomel all the supps, made all the diet changes many times to find the right one, , the healthy one, exercise on the days their body let's them, had hormones checked and STILL...STILL.... are 50% or more body fat, exhausted and no one, no one is doing actual science on this. 🤷

    Very cool podcast, thanks guys! The GABA/glutamate, cognitive perrformance and experimenting probably interest me the most.
    With all that talk about a ketogenic diet, I wonder if Dom and Rhonda would still agree with me in that just a mediterranian/nordic diet with varying macros and some fasting here and there would probably already contribute to most of the benefits the average person could obtain from diet alone? And I wonder if the average person and people who have issues with eating disorders and such wouldn't be better off actually staying away from a ketogenic or even low-carb approach, as the other factors involved, like worrying about what to eat, testing, planning, social interactions,...would contribute to a level of stress that ultimately they wouldn't gain any net benefit.

      Good questions. I think someone with eating disorders should be monitored by a practitioner for safety and to work through their personal triggers. I wonder if exogenous ketones would be a good addition as a starting point to allow the brain to heal? it was a big eye opening watching the video (search dr boz spect scan) and included someone with an eating disorder. Was very eye opening. Most things need multidisciplinary approach, education, counselling. Im a binge eater and had to work thru my triggers, childhood stress events and how I eat. i hope keto clinics popup for these exact things in the near future and replace the "fat camps".

    My Hemaglobin A1c has gone down to 5.4 on a low fat diet. That is limiting fat to about 30-40 grams per day, or 10-15% calories from fat. Protein about 15% and the rest is complex carbohydrates like whole grains, berries, vegetables, fruit. Previously my Hb A1c was 5.6-5.8.

      Some old guy I knew also has their A1c go down from 9.0 to 5.4 as well when they did a meat based keto diet with me as well. you vegans really need to step up your propgandpa efforts...

      @@sleepinglaffey3886 I wasn't saying that a keto diet could not have similar results in lowering A1c. I was highlighting that it is not carbohydrates that is the problem. It is refined industrialized carbohydrates that are dangerous for people. And it seems that a diet rich in refined carbohydrates and high in fat that is really bad. No where did I attack the keto diet. But it seems your comment was rather negative towards vegans. Also, I don't consider myself a vegan, which is a very moral stance, but rather whole food plant based.

    I’ve seen Dr. Longo on your channel talk about high carb/moderate fat/low protein diet (primarily plant-based) for overall health and longevity. That type of diet and keto are obviously incompatible. How do you reconcile the two?

      let me take a stab at it. Not a medical pro, just read lot of health related articles and papers. it is the calorie restriction that ultimately helps. Low fat diet, low carb diet, high protein, carnivore, vegan all work in light of calorie deficit. the common culprit is sugar, refined carbs and processed food. Longo's low protein works in the context of a typical high carb. High carb+high protein=high IGF = Aging. Ketosis has it's own set of unique benefits for people with epilepsy and other conditions or autoimmune conditions. I did keto for a year and felt good, but it was no different from doing a "slow carb diet (tim Ferris)" or data driven fasting (Marty Kendall). I don't have any conditions that would benefit from Ketosis so it did not me make such an amazing change as some people say. I think what really helped me feel my best was energy defecit and minimizing blood glucose variability. All diets I have done that excludes sugars and processed food pretty much felt the same. For me the some distinct advantage keto has is - I was never hungry, I could run for a long time and not get hungry or tired. I am not a competitive athlete so it was not important but I can see how some athletes can benefit from Ketosis. I stopped keto as I don't think eliminating entire foods groups such as grams (lentils, beans, pulses) rich in polyphenols and fiber is good long term. I plan on doing cyclical keto to remain metabolically flexible. And do longo's 5 day prolon like diet once every quarter.
      PS: I tried Longo's prolon kit twice. Not impress with it. There is nothing to it except its severely calorie defecit and low protein and as a result down regulates mtor/ IGF1 and stimulus Ketosis/aptopsis etc. It's super expensive and has relatively high sugar. I will make my own kit next time or just do a water fast.

      But have you experienced those negatives yourself? The phytochemicals you talk about is found to create hormetic stress and induce a state of hormesis. This is not bad, it is a good thing. Furthermore a diverse and healthy gut microbiome is essential. Eat your veggies!

      @@islandboy9580 I agree with some people have issues. But if you isolate the phytochemicals and start with eleminating one group at a time e.g. nightshade veggies which contains lectin. You may find what you specifically can't tolerate. Then you can still get good benefit from hormesis and the nutrients vegetables gives you.
      It is the same with allergies. Same approach. But don't fear it if you have no side effects eating plants and greens.

    22:17 Dom is referring to CPT1 which is arguably not an error. It is commonly found only in coastal arctic communities so it isn't studied well. It is related to SIDS, but folks who have one or even both alleles do not die from ketosis beyond the age of like 6. Why is he claiming that people with this extremely rare genetic mutation can die from keto? Especially considering the traditional diet in coastal arctic communities. I've read one study that recommended children with CPT1 should basically avoid ketosis, but there doesn't seem to be a consenses and telling adults to avoid their traditional diet is bad advice.

      fat in liver and in the body is from sugar and release of insulin. except fructose and nearly 75% of fructose is stored in muscles/liver as fat but the harm is there without your blood sugar rising. This is bad when high glucose and high fat are together-- but NOT when sugar consumption is low as insulin is low. please read up on the order of food oxidation. glucose comes first after alcohol, so if you eat fat and sugar together, your body starts with using what it can of sugar, and all excess is stored as fat and fat too. the benefit of eating high fat very low sugar, is you no longer use sugar for fuel, you use fat by making them into ketones and because you use the fat for fuel, your fat in your blood goes down (low triglycerides). because your body has low hunger and can constantly use body fat, you lose weight and keep insulin low. this includes burning liver fat (which leads to t2 diabetes). so No, ketogenic diet is a low insulin diet and you can eat plant based keto too and be carnivore keto too. check out heavenly fan shes vegan, however I do not believe in human cruelty even to ones self. optimal nutrition is eating animal based and cant understand why someone would choose to be suboptimal at the detriment of themselves. Saturated fats are the most stable. Animal based vitamins are best absorbed by far. Need appropriate absorbable proteins on a large scale basis. We need animals to replace what's lost from our topsoil. stay safe

    I tried Keto, lost weight felt good but my triglycerides, LDL, and other heart bio markers went sky high. Have FTO homozygous polymorphs and others polymorphisms that are not favorable for sat fat. I will stick w/Dr. Valter Longo and Satchin Panda-Mediterranean diet and IF with some EF fasts thrown in. The blue zone cultures do not practice Keto and are mostly plant based with small amounts of meat. The longest lived Americans are seventh day Adventist w/Loma Linda study and they are plant based, no alcohol or smoking.

      I'm so glad you brought all of these points up. I totally agree with you that that the longest lived ppl in the world are not on Keto and in mice experiments on 90% fats (which is a very restrictive diet) only very slightly increased lifespan. The one benefit it does have is better memory conservation, some benefits in physiological healthspan but nothing really significant vs some other different healthy diets eg Mediterranean/flexitarian (which is what I do).
      For autophagy and effective ketosis, I do longer TRF (22:2 or 21:3) + I do slightly longer fasts eg 48 hrs around 2-3 times a month. I have never done 3 days+ because you start breaking down muscle (even if you do muscle building exercise and increase growth hormone).
      To greatly lower glucose , LDL, TG, insulin after meals I take berberine with quercetin, ginger, vit B complex, vit D, chromium, fenugreek, fish oil - really helps to get you faster into ketosis and these are all safe and natural in smaller doses. The other thing is 1-2 tbsp of apple cidar vinegar diluted in 1 glass of water each morning/ with meals>> gets your sugars down and kickstarts fat burning. You should however eat more veggies with potassium if you use any apple cidar vinegar to prevent potassium loss. The best part is that I still can have carbs and protein and healthy fats and have great health, lose weight (I'm a very slim gal), even eat things like pie, higher carb veggies etc (which is almost impossible on keto) and still look a lot younger than my age and have 0 health issues.
      Anyway everyone has a different regimen but the above has been a game changer for me.

      @@homesignup I 100% agree. I don't have to do keto diet to be in ketosis. IF does that. Running while fasting does it even faster. I have not seen any evidence of actual long term keto people that lived long, if anything most famous keto advocates have died rather young. Another reason I decided to stop keto and do a lowish carb Mediterranean. Planning on doing CKD couple times a year

      Hi Sandra, a month after starting keto my heart bio markers also shot up when tested, but I just reduced the MCT oil in my diet, but otherwise stayed low carb moderate fat and after 6 months my heart bio markers were back into the healthy range, so your body, at least in my case, did adjust. Once your metabolism is fat adapted, there are many benefits, particularly for long distance running.

    What's the value of fibre if it's absent in a carnivore diet? If you are eating plant matter - esp. carbs - you'd need fibre. Why would we need no fibre on a carnivore diet? Prove we do. "There's such a lack of evidence" - Dr. Rhonda Patrick.
    Consider indigenous native communities, esp. the Inuit in N Canada / Greenland. There are NO carbs in the North. Not much in the way of plant matter in their diet, ever (some berries for a couple weeks in the summer, but you gotta fight bears for them & they're found more in the southern range of the North, if at all). Controlled experiment: they never leave the lab (it's a thousand mile trip). Long duration: how's a thousand years sound? On their natural diet, there was zero incidence observed of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, dementia, & they lived long & robust lives: reliably lived to 75-80+ & were still running beside the sled (nomadic & that sled is tiny - they couldn't carry you). Granted, they quit the "natural" diet the minute white whalers showed up with tea, sugar & flour. And from that point forward, diabetes is rampant, dementia the norm with age, cancer & heart disease normal. They have no genetic adaptation to accommodate carb processing. But while they stayed on a "natural" diet (pure keto, in fact carnivore-keto), they were fine. Healthy, robust, strong.
    If they were eating plants, yeah they'd need prebiotics & fibre to process that stuff.
    If you're on a carnivore diet now, it isn't clear why you'd need fibre in your diet.

    If a ketogenic diet is so good, why did the Inuits develop a mutation that kept them from going into ketosis despite a diet that consisted entirely of meat and fat? This means that those who did not develop this mutation died off. Complex carbs are the keystone of all the longest lived populations on earth. While temporary ketosis via fasting is beneficial from time to time because of apoptosis, continual ketosis is nonsense.

      Complex carbs are definitely not a keystone. Do you really think our ancestors had access to complex carbs? You're thinking way too short term. Corn, grains, roots, tubers, have only been in use for the last 5 to 10 thousand years. Our ancestors have been eating meat for around for 2 million years. Then cooked meat probably started out brain evolution. They likely ate meat, green plants, and fruit. And fruit is only edible in the spring and early summer. To me, if they were lucky, they were in ketosis for most of the year except spring when fruits and berries were available. Then they eat as much fruit as possible. That gets insulin, the fat storage hormone, working full time. Their bodies store the fat. Then when fruit goes out of season, they enter ketosis again while only eating plants and meat. To me the problem with the modern diet is there is no balance between insulin and glucagon. Is definitely insulin heavy because people are eating a constant supply of carbs that they don't not need because they aren't getting exercise, where insulin has to keep removing sugar from your blood and almost no glucagon that has to supply sugar to you blood.
      Where in ketosis, you are still eating carbs, up to 50g a day, plenty for most. So when you get those carbs, your body has a very slight increase in insulin to remove the glucose from blood. Then when you don't have carbs for a while, glucagon comes out and has to supply your blood with glucose to prevent low blood sugar, just like insulin prevents high blood sugar. It's a constant seesaw balance unlike the modern diets.

      Interesting thought, what is your sources? If you eat only meat and fat gluconeogenesis occurs. So why would it be a problem to be in ketosis for inuits?

      Lol inuits are like the model for keto. Where'd you hear that they can't go into keto? Before agriculture, carbs were extremely limited and seasonal. We thrive on carnivore/keto diets.

      Complex carbs are not in any shape or form the keystone in better health . Actually recent studies show average population is dying a couple years earlier than previous years. Living a life of medications and health problems is not living . Carbs high insulin is the cause of the majority of health problems today.       The longest lived populations on earth are all carb based. Longest is vegetarian Seventh Day Adventists, second traditional Okinawan diet. Even the past experts on ketogenic diets now have stepped it back to include more carbs and just avoid insulin spikes. What you are spouting is nonsense.
      And of course you totally ignored the matter of the Inuit mutation that prevents them from going into ketosis despite a diet of protein and fat. Because those who went into continual ketosis died off. While it is good to go into ketosis for the purpose of apoptosis from time to time, avoiding complex carbs is utter nonsense.

      these 2 understand more about studies than most. the ratios of fat protein carbs are much different and some studies try to use that to go against ketogenic diets- that I do know. I've seen many in plant based community using animal studies and not declaring it. transparency is important.

    Humans have flat square teeth just like all the plant-eating vegetarian species. We have grown the 2 front sharper canine teeth over thousands of years to adapt to eating meat. I prefer getting my protein and fats from plant sources only.
