Dr. Benjamin Levine: How Exercise Prevents & Reverses Heart Aging
Everyone has to get old sometime, but what if, at least for some aspects of aging, we didn't have to? Imagine if the loss of heart size and the stiffness that often comes with aging could be reversed, even well into late middle-age.
And not by a little - by a lot. Today's guest, Dr. Benjamin Levine, has shown that with the right exercise protocol, people who were sedentary most of their lives could reverse up to 20 years of heart aging. Dr. Levine is one of the world's leading experts in understanding how the heart adapts under a variety of conditions, whether that's exercise, elite athleticism, or hospital bedrest. Or even highly exotic conditions, like prolonged exposure to microgravity. He is the founding director of the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine at UT Southwestern in Dallas, a leading facility renowned for its research in cardiovascular physiology.

When people exercise as part of a treatment for alcohol abuse disorder it reduces their volume of alcohol consumption. But why? One reason may be FGF21. Asking Dr Levine to bump the table less for audios sake right when he’s talking a moment about his friend dying is pretty unprofessional but also something I see happen regularly with soundies. Dr. Benjamin is another one of those Genius Medical Physicians with a one-track mind. Holy cow, how many are there. How about giving the public an understanding of all those Medical terms that people can understand. If you are ready to listen to another Genius Doctor speaking on the same subject, he has another opinion. Who is right? but he has a title. He is a Doctor, so people will believe the nonsense. If you can only walk for a mile, that is fine, keep it up, and good for you, it does not have to be an hour, and it does not have to be Yoga or Pilates, just walk and stay active. Smile every day, stay happy. Thank you.

    • @FoundMyFitness

Of course, you can do whatever you want. It'll be great for you and you should feel great about that. But it won't reverse the qualities of heart aging he's talking about. You don't have to reverse heart aging to benefit from exercise, but I think what Dr. Levine says is pretty clear: there's a window of opportunity that lasts up until late middle age and it takes a certain degree of structured and committed training or you won't tap into it. What's so hard to follow about that?

Fascinating talk. I lived with CHF for many years before having a heart and kidney transplant about a year and half ago so a lot of this content speaks directly to me. Despite regular “prehab” and rehab sessions I came home from the hospital looking like I’d been in an internment camp. My routine right now is 5 days about 7 hrs a week and definitely at a much better level of fitness. Fun fact when you get a new heart the Vegus nerve is severed so my resting HR is around 90 and doesn’t often get above 160. I found his talk about A G E interesting, never heard anything about that before. Guess I need to bring that up with my cardiologist.

I have followed FMF/Patrick for years. Exercise MUST BEEN SEEN as secondary to THE #1 most important health tip - that Dr. Patrick covered with Dr. Satchin Panda. You can exercise all you want but if you are eating after sundown (specifically if you have 'Excess Circulating Glucose (ECG)" in your blood stream as the sun is setting, YOU will be causing inflammation ALL THRU THE NIGHT that is throughout the blood system starting with the one-cell THIN endothelial lining and surrounding tissue. I told this to an elite amateur senior runner - for over 50 years. We had just run a competitive 5K on a flat certified course. His goal was to run a qualifying time for THE National Senior Amateur 5k and 10K championships. VERY competitive. He did qualify but only by 10 seconds. He was to run a 10K two days later to qualify for the 10K as well but said "I am far from certain that I can." He asked of my time and was impressed (I am 5 years older) so he asked how much training mileage was I do and I said "I almost never run. Averaging about 1.5 miles PER WEEK." Shocked he asked how would I explain my surprising performance. I told him "I never eat at or close to sundown. It causes terrible inflammation all thru the night." We chatted and he left. TWO DAYS later he easily qualified for that National 10K championship and was manic with excitement of his incredible accomplishment and pleaded with me to explain what HE had just done. He told me that as we started, he got into what he felt was the right pace (note there are no mile markers but only a 5K halfway marker on this course). He said it was effortless. it felt too easy thus he felt he might be going too slow and wouldn't qualify. HOWEVER when he got to the 5K mark on this certified course, his time would have qualified him for the National 5K AGAIN. He kept running and easily qualified. In almost insane manic excitement he pleaded with me to explain. What runner asks another runner why he did so well? Crazy. I then learned from him that, he had been listening to me 2 days before, and stopped eating the day before the 10K by 4PM. So I then explained with: "Well, maybe for the first time in your life, you woke up this morning (5AM) with NO inflammation in your body. Thus the one-cell thin endothelial lining of all blood vessels was not inflamed nor impaired. THus the flow of oxygen from the lungs into the blood was not impaired. And from the blood to the heart and muscles was not impaired. And in reverse, the flow of CO2 and waste products (lactic acid) was not impaired. I then concluded with: "We don't know what normal is. It's been hidden for our entire lives." As Hippocrates wrote 2,400 years ago: 'If you are sick and still eating YOU are feeding your illness. Stop eating and you will heal." They didn't eat after noon in those days.
