With mental health conditions and disorders on the rise, we often overlook how the foods that we consume each day have the power to transform and reshape our brain chemistry for better or worse. According to Dr. Georgia Ede, each bite can literally change our minds.
    Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with psychiatrist Dr. Georgia Ede to discuss mental health disorders and their connection to our standard American diet. Dr. Ede shares the benefits of a ketogenic diet, the research behind how food changes our brain chemistry, and the top myths about foods marketed as brain superfoods. Diet is only part of it. Social media and lack of real connection is another part of the problem. Overconsumerism, basing your worth on things, and comparing what you have to others is another part of it.

      Totally agree, I never have compared myself to anyone else. I have my own brain and live my life for me, not for anyone else. I dont want to know about gossip, why would I waste my time and become sick in the head! But I really can’t stand the idiots who “believe” the news, and think they have the right to JUDGE people as being weird/paedophiles etc, from untruth most of the time. These are the sick’ people we need to watch out for. And ALL Jealousy should be ignored not even a conversation with these sorry individuals.

My personality literally changed overnight from a crazy bitch to a pleasant person. It was then I realized food ABSOLUTELY impacts mental health and stability.

    Beside all the refined sugars, oils of lowest quality and processing etc., soils nowadays are getting depleted of minerals (like potassium), vegetables are intoxicated with pesticides/herbicides and environmental pollutants, they’re genetically modified, and get treated with numerous chemical agents
    and get wrapped in plastic and other detrimental packaging materials that affect the food and thus disrupt the balance of our hormones, the gut microbiome etc.

We were a stronger and healthier society before chain supermarkets and television. Natural foods, lots of water, a 16 hour fasting window, a drastic reduction of starches, and a long walk, is a strategy that is sustainable for those of us in retirement. Common factors were:
    purpose, activity
    ( e.g., growing good
    food ), low stress,
    emotional support ,
    Organic food ( i.e., no junk ),
    Comparitive quiet ;
    comfortable in
    community....😊🌿
    The modern urban life
    with huge stresses :
    junk food ; anxiety
    ( crime, terrorists ..) ;
    " Burn-out" ;
    Isolation, overcrowding,
    pollution, imported
    cultural differences,
    National debt ; corruption;
    " Tribes ", Drugs, slavery;
    aggression ;
    Covid ; fear of society
    breaking down...😢.
    epidemics of obesity
    and diabetes...🤔😢...
    Those great old folks
    in "The Blue Zone"
    somehow avoided
    most of the modern
    urban problems....😊🌹

    The other point I
    wanted to make
    was that my favourite

    The Mediterranean diet does have, in many modern cases, a high carbohydrates content nowadays, since flour is relatively cheap, but most persons use more of the foods devoid of this, and I have been raised on lesser dependency on "pasta" plates, and at 86 years in a few months, the family doctor wishes that his 60 year old patients would be as healthy as myself. The diet MUST vary during the week, Using less processed foods. Also in the USA, that I have visited often, I see very few that "walk", not even getting out from the car when ordering their McDonalds and then eating it. I try to walk for up to two hours a day.

It's more than just chemical compounds that directly impact brain function, right? I am a bit puzzled by the statement at 1:12:00 that grains and cereal products are always fortified. Is this specifically a reference to processed foods such as breakfast cereals, enriched white flour, etc? I don't think one would encountered any fortified grains when preparing one's own food from standard traditional ingredients (other than, perhaps, enriched flour, if one uses that).

    The key takeaways from Dr. Georgia Ede's perspective on diet and mental health are:
    1. **Negative Impact of Processed Foods:** Consumption of processed meats, sugary drinks, and refined carbohydrates is harmful to both physical and mental health. These foods contribute to inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance in the brain.
    2. **Importance of a Healthy Diet:** A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins is recommended for better health and longevity. Such a diet positively influences brain chemistry and overall well-being.
    3. **Dangers of Modern Diet:** The modern diet, high in ultra-processed foods and unhealthy fats like refined vegetable oils, is linked to an epidemic of mental health disorders. These foods undergo extensive chemical processing and are detrimental to brain health.
    4. **Myth of Superfoods:** Commonly touted superfoods like blueberries, red wine, and dark chocolate do not have the magical health benefits often claimed. Adding them to an unhealthy diet does not significantly improve brain health.
    5. **Benefits of the Ketogenic Diet:** The ketogenic diet, which is high in fats, moderate in protein, and low in carbohydrates, can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain. It stabilizes blood sugar and insulin levels and provides an alternative energy source for the brain.
    6. **Exercise and Muscle Health:** Regular exercise and maintaining muscle health are crucial for improving metabolism and insulin sensitivity.
    7. **Personalized Dietary Strategies:** Different levels of dietary strategies can be adopted depending on individual metabolic health and goals. Personalizing the diet is key to its effectiveness and sustainability.
    8. **Critique of Nutrition Epidemiology:** Dr. Ede criticizes the field of nutrition epidemiology for its reliance on biased and unreliable data, advocating for more scientifically rigorous research.
    9. **Empowerment Through Knowledge:** Understanding the impact of diet on health and mental well-being is empowering. Dr. Ede encourages readers to make informed choices about their diet and lifestyle.
    10. **Holistic Approach to Diet:** The focus should be on a diet that nourishes, protects, and energizes the brain, emphasizing the importance of avoiding antinutrients and refined carbohydrates and maintaining healthy glucose and insulin levels.

    I have depression, anxiety, fibromyalgia, chronic neck pain, chronic insomnia, all due to having a mother with all the traits of narcissistic personality disorder. I take a low dose antidepressant and a sedative to help me sleep. The chronic neck pain is bc of bone degeneration and I have stomach issues bc of the fibromyalgia. I know that exercise and a good diet helps me with my conditions. I’m 67 and was diagnosed at 56 with depression, the other problems followed. I know that exercise and a good diet helps me. I hate meat, would be a vegetarian but can’t quite do it. I eat some chicken and seafood. I have kefir for breakfast that helps with my gut issues. I do have a glass of wine and eat some chocolate. I like what you said in last part of interview. I don’t think I can do a 😅keto diet but will cut back on foods that are anti nutrient and eat more whole foods. Had a look at the keto diet and a lot of the foods on it I already eat. I prefer kefir to yogurt but when I do have plain Greek yogurt, blueberries come in handy to flavour it. I do have cream in my one coffee a day, drink green tea or lemon water, all unsweetened. I do occasionally have bread and pasta. I’ve been lazy so I’ll ramp up my fruit and veggies. I don’t like salmon or any of the oily fish but sometimes have other types or prawns, oysters, crayfish too. In winter I sometimes have porridge. I also eat butter. Live in New Zealand so our cows are grass fed. No Starbucks for me, it’s a small double shot flat white when I go to a cafe, we have the best coffee. I do eat eggs and avocado too.

Even the meat and vegetables most of us buy are problematic. Many of us are sitting a lot but doing a lot of brain work and working longer hours. We also may not be able to eat when we’re hungry or should eat because of the demands of our work.
