  • Our brains work hard to keep up with the demands of our physical bodies and minds. As a vital organ, our brain controls our thoughts, behaviors, relationships, sex drive, heart rate, disease risk, and so much more. The daily activities of life revolve around our brain, and yet it is so easy to forget the things we need to do in order for it to thrive.
Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Daniel Amen to discuss what’s possible when we make our brain health a priority. Dr. Amen shares the insults that harm our brains and how to get started on the path to better brain health. Among other things, they discuss Dr. Amen’s family history with brain health and a few remarkable case studies on the brain healing from trauma.
Dr. Daniel Amen is a physician and adult and child psychiatrist on a mission to end mental illness by creating a revolution in brain health. He is the founder of Amen Clinics, which has 11 locations across the US and the world’s largest database of brain scans. He is also the founder of BrainMD, a fast-growing, science-based nutraceutical company, and Amen University, which has trained thousands of medical and mental health professionals on the methods he has developed.
Dr. Amen is one of the most influential experts on brain health, with millions of followers on social media. In 2020, Dr. Amen launched his digital series, Scan My Brain, on CZcams and Instagram, featuring actors, musicians, athletes, entrepreneurs, and influencers. He has also produced 16 national public television shows, and his online videos on brain and mental health have been viewed over 300 million times. Dr. Amen is a 12-time New York Times bestselling author. His highly anticipated new book, Change Your Brain Every Day, will be published on March 21, 2023.
In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Amen dive into:
-Dr. Amen’s morning routine for brain health
-What’s possible with optimal brain function
-The different ways our brains say “ouch”
    -Prioritizing interventions for brain health
-How alcohol, marijuana, and psilocybin impact the brain
    -Traumatic brain injuries
    -Understanding your brain type
-How brain health ties into sexual health
-Dr. Amen’s approach to heart health

Aha, so you basically recapitulate the day at night. This is very good advice (incidentally central in what Carlos Castaneda was taught by shamans). You can also focus on what was negative in a positive way :) by means of breathing: breathe in remembering an interaction that was not ideal, breathe out releasing the energy of it. If you wake up in the morning and your awareness/focus goes to something negative/anxiety you can breathe this away. Effective, it does require a little inner silence.

When are Companies and Industry going to acknowledge that working nights is so terrible to one's health and make adjustments to that fact? How can Dr. Amen's advice apply to so many that work evenings and nights? What if our jobs require the night shift. And if one works at the railroad as I did, sometimes one didn't have a regular shift but one was on call 24-7. That 24-7 schedule required working whatever was needed of the 3 shifts. For instance one day you would work mornings, and the next day, nights, and then the next day afternoon. Total irregularity. If one has children, and a family, one has to work if one is able. Working healthy jobs is not a choice for everyone. Some jobs just require working terrible hours. And the pay differential for working those jobs is not always equitable compared to the risk to one's health and well being, as well as one's family that suffers what the worker is experiencing as well.

I totally agree. At the minimum, companies have an obligation to advise their employees of the health risk of the night shift work, pay additional, and provide expert specialist coaching to minimize circadian disruption.
      --Audrey in Chicago

    • @kernjames
      @kernjames Před 6 měsíci +5

@@GregMeadMakerThanks for the positive words. At some point in human history, "who owns the body of the worker" will have to be addressed. That might sound crazy, but the Railroad (or whatever business) pays a person, not just for their service and work, but also for their presence, "their physical body". When the concept of who owns the body, is not addressed, the assumption that the Railroad (or whatever business) owns "you" from such and such a time, to such and such a time, is a form of slavery (indentured servant type). Employment today, is an agreed upon type of slavery, that is, wages for time of one's life, and for one's work and service, but because one enters a contract that limits one's freedom of choosing to work or not work, that type of agreement is still a from of slavery. Companies are scared to death that workers someday will become self aware enough, to expect to be better compensated for the renting-out of their BODIES to, whatever company. The amount of money that CEOs get , shareholders get and other management get at the price of the health and welfare of the workers is in my view, criminal.

I agree with and appreciate your wonderful sharing of knowledge and care.
I don't like the thought of being a brilliant healthy mind all alone or only with a spouse. I feel we are missing out on family and learning from and passing on our nurturing experiences. Like simply brain to brain conversations sounds so cold and inhuman even if they aren't. I like how some Native cultures stay, pray, eat, converse and vision quest together. Great by self but even better shared. Sounds like a commune but we learn much about ourselves from reflections from people we don't necessarily agree with. Anyway, "Feed your head" take care of all of your thoughts and make dreams healthy one's so they can grow and come true for all who dream of reality being heavenly, lovely and nurturing. Breathe in God and breathe out ego. Take time to love nature and yourself in it.
Videos are like magical trips also - I do miss the circle and the campfire talks. Getting harder to come together Right Now - over me. Haha, just a memory of Beatles wonderful mind appetizers.
Yes I too have had head injuries, still here and hope we all heal the traumatic stuff we go through.
Can't afford to take time for granted - even imagination, dreaming and doing in the moment need a bit of careful guidance. Isn't life a miricle in the making? Love, peace and prayers for the whole process.🤗

I enjoyed listening to the calm voice of Dr. Amen, easy to follow for non-native speakers and no stress to follow along. It would be nice if Dhru slowed the pace down of his speech. Dhru, you appear to get excited to convey to people all you possible can and thus you speak fast. Could you make an effort to slow down please?

If she can't fast go ketogenic diet for a couple of weeks and see if her seizures ease up - her tumour should shrink too as cancer loves sugar and cannot use fats, lipids or ketones.

I was trained for Traditonal Chinese Medicine and I since we use balancing methods whether jn dao advice, herbal formulas, or acupuncture I came up with this to remind myself and others to keep from missing something in your life. Since we are all different personalities we tend to lean towards doing a lot of some of these and not enough of others. I do not enjoy staying up late so that’s easy for me . I do tend to love getting outside but I do not always go around and socialize like I should … here’s how I check in for balancing :
    Sunlight
    Water
    Movement
    Stillness
    Contact
    Solitude

First thing. You are what you eat.
I found, after being retired for depression when I was 47 that at the age of 65 it was because I was a Coeliac. In fact I was intolerant of Gluten, found in wheat, barley and rye. It was no good trying to train my brain at all. If you have any slight symptoms of stomach problems, even constipation, wind, etc with depression, have a test for it. I only found out having overtipped myself into vomiting and diarrea after eating a huge Cornish pasty, a biopsy confirmed it.
PPI's for reflux, like Omeprazole can ruin your ability to digest B12 too, giving you severe anaemia. It did me.

At first, I found myself agreeing with you on some a lot of what you said. However, at around a quarter of the video, you mentioned how caffeine should be cut out, but I’ve read various articles how it helps with cardiovascular, Alzheimer’s etc. Another thing was the mention of marajuana, and how it reduces blood flow, but a lot of the articles Indicate that it actually increases bloodflow.
Edit: another issue I have is what he said about sunscreen. While it’s true it will increase your chemical load, you unfortunately do need it to prevent yourself from getting skin cancer (and the chemicals used for filters have been tested rather thoroughly)
