  • Hidden toxins can be found in our everyday products and increase our risk of chronic diseases like cancer. Not only can these toxins be found in products that are absorbed in our skin, but they may also be in the air we breathe and the water we drink daily. Learning about the impact of these hidden chemicals and where they are commonly found can empower us to make better choices as consumers, limit our exposure, and create better health for ourselves and our families.
Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Yvonne Burkart, a board-certified toxicologist. Dr. Burkart shares the top sources of hidden toxins in everyday products, like cosmetics, cleaning, and household products. Dr. Burkart shares the latest research around toxin exposure, the most common toxic ingredients and where they can be found, and her top tips on protecting ourselves from exposure and optimizing detoxification in our bodies.
Dr. Yvonne Burkart is a 22-year veteran of Toxicology with expertise in reproductive toxicity, particularly endocrine disruption, infertility, and cancer. She has also served as a Senior Toxicologist in the flavor and fragrance chemical industry, where she helped to ensure the safety of flavor ingredients, and is now a whistleblower on the lack of regulations in that field.
After going through her own health crisis from exposure to harmful chemicals and witnessing firsthand the power of a low-tox lifestyle, Dr. Yvonne began a mission to help consumers slash their toxic exposure with confidence and ease.
In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Burkart dive into:
-Research confirming that hidden toxins in our cosmetics can turn on cancer genes in our bodies
-The implications of activating breast cancer genes in women
-The most common ingredients found in cosmetics that should be removed and everyday products that contain them
-Why companies continue to use harmful ingredients in their products
-The unknown behind what happens when you combine chemicals and use them on the body long term
-Why consumers generally believe the industry’s blanket statements that chemicals are safe for the body
-Why fragrances added to cosmetics or household products can be toxic and their impact on our body
-How hidden toxins can have an obesogenic effect
-Top 5 things toxins that should be avoided
-The power of glutathione, how to support its natural production, and supplementing with glutathione
-Other supplements that can help with detoxification
-The importance of breathing in quality air and filtering water
-Reconsidering using a paper cup for coffee
-Support the detoxification of microplastics and testing exposure
-What conscientious consumers can ask companies to provide them
-Products that Dr. Burkart has found to be surprisingly toxic
-Research showing that breast cancer amongst younger people is on the rise
-The turning point for Dr. Burkart and her personal journey with toxins
-Should natural flavors be avoided, and how consumers can avoid feeling overwhelmed
-Dr. Burkart’s tips for minimizing her children’s toxic exposure

Phthalates make me violently ill so I’ve studied it extensively. It binds to testosterone and washes it out of our bodies. It causes cancer and infertility. Most countries have banned it. Men today are only half as fertile as their grandfathers were. Because of phthalates. By the year 2050 there will not be a single fertile male left in the US if they don’t do something drastic now! It’s also making their genitalia smaller. It’s horrible. It’s in plastic, shower curtains, dryer sheets, perfume. It’s terrible!!!

Unfortunately, ALL bureaucracies, no matter how good intentions it was developed with, always turn to the goal of just keeping or growing their budget, and this means they follow the money, not the stated goals.
Look at every bureaucracy, and organization, they ALL go his way from government, to science to religion etc.
This is why it’s important for people to be trained not to rely on organizations long term (including the govt.)
They need to be regularly uprooted and reorganized.

Like you, I also vowed to never touch CHEMO or RADIATION but in my instance, included MAMMOGRAMS ... and did so for at least 20 years, given all the negativity that I'd gleaned through You Tube testimonies. SHORT VERSION: I only had a Mammogram & 6 Rounds of Chemo, when I learned that my Stage 4 Breast Cancer had gone into remission.🙏👍 LONGEST VERSION: Well, 17yrs ago I discovered a tiny lump in my right breast. I NEVER used to feel for such in my smallest breasts, so why I did that day, beats me! Maybe I was spiritually guided to do so by my Guardian Angel. YES! I absolutely believe in such and miracles etc. Anyhow, I knowing how I felt about Mammograms, Chemo & Radiation, STUPIDLY chose to IGNORE it, besides very briefly mentioning it to my best friend and my sister, telling them my decision & asking that they please pretend that I'd never mentioned anything. Both suggested that I have it checked and bother citing that it was most probably nothing to worry about, especially given my healthy diet and life-style, besides LETHAL CIGARETTES. Neither asked me about it again, but about 10 yrs ago, I again very briefly mentioned to my Bestie, that it had grown slightly. WELL, 4yrs ago it broke through my skin, causing a pin prick-sized hole that bled if rubbed with a bath towel, so I refrained from touching it and also wore tiny spot plasters over it. It began to grow RAPIDLY, and for a year I STUPIDLY tried to ignore it, and kept increasing the size of the plasters to cover it. It was absolutely PAINLESS despite been raw flesh. EVENTUALLY I plucked up the courage to show it to my GP, and the look on her face said it all. She immediately grabbed the phone and began speaking to one of the Oncologists at our local Gov. Breast Clinic. Their call only lasted a few minutes at most and I was told that I'd be expected to register at the Clinic the following day, a Friday ... but I decided to only go on the Monday. They weren't impressed with me or my attitude regarding my negativity towards all their treatment methodologies, so I made up my mind to SHUT UP, be grateful, trust that they had all taken the Hippocratic Oath, and then PRAY like I'd never prayed before. Over the next 2 months, I had a BIOPSY that tested positive for STAGE 4 CANCER, and then had all the Scans, X-Rays, Mammograms, MRIs etc. etc. Then I was ready to meet the HEAD ONCOLOGIST and her ever-changing team of under-studies developing their skills to becoming competent Oncologists themselves. She'd advised that I take someone closest to me to this meeting, so I took my Bestie. I asked to sign a consent form regarding immediate CHEMO treatment, and my friend had to sign as my witness. Once I'd signed, my Bestie SIGHED A LOUD SIGH OF RELIEF, explaining how absolutely adamant I'd always been regarding my refusal to EVER TOUCH ANY OF THAT STUFF! She also told them how long I had waited since first discovering the tiny lump, and they were all HORRIFIED in total disbelief. The Head Oncologist said that I was extremely lucky that I had such an impressive immune system.
A week later on 8/11/2022 I had my first round of Chemo & fortunately, besides fewest minor discomforts, not including nausea which I didn't experience, found to be a breeze. When I went to my appointment to schedule my surgery just to have the tiny tumor removed, I'd picked up a very rare and nasty respiratory fungus and was immediately hospitalized for a week. That's also when I learned that my cancer had gone into remission and thereafter, further tests proved that even the tiny tumor had shrunk and completely disappeared. So now, I simply have a nasty looking, but painless scar for my BEEN THERE, DONE THAT! Show in Tell. 🙏 Miracles are very real and prayers really do work! 👏🙌God bless you ALL.

I stopped wearing any sort of makeup about 14 years ago. Same with hair color. I'm 51 and 90% of the hair on my head is still dark brown, very thick, shiny and healthy. I have a bit of grays here and there especially on the sides when I pull my hair back, but but they are natural highlights and I actually love them. I wash my face and use beauty blotters to keep the shine down and drink lots of water to make sure my skin is hydrated. I would never go back to wearing makeup. I love how my clean skin feels. I don't use much sunscreen at all. If I do, its zinc based. I use UPF clothing and facecovers (that I used for fishing) to protect my face and neck from the sun with a hat (I live in a very hot and sunny climate). I also found another purpose for my fishing gloves. I use them while driving, walking, everywhere. I have no sun spots on my hands. Go natural and you won't regret it. I sure don't and many times, I'm mistaken for ten years younger. I'll enjoy that little bonus as long as I can!

I am 71 and never used sunscreen or face make-up. We have known about how toxic these products are for decades. My daughter and I just had a conversation about how many so called health products used natural flavors in their products which are very toxic for your brain. The best thing to do is to buy only organic products without seed oils in your food. As a parent my biggest accomplishment was to teach my children about these toxic substances. My grandchildren all eat organically and are very healthy and smart. They know it is better for them to skip eating junk foods and it is just natural for them to choose healthy foods.

I hope you also avoid sunburns by avoiding excessive sun exposure during certian times of the day. There is a lot of speculation of what could cause cancer, but there are few cases where a direct causation is known and where the mechanism is well understood. These include HPV, radiation, tobacco and mutations due to UV damage to the skin. Having seen several cases of melanoma in the family and done research on it (as in rigorous, published, scientific research and not as in 'do your own research' ), I'd take any effective sunscreen over that. That being said, I do look at the ingredients and also eat natural as much as possible.

After her diagnosis my sister learned all about nutrition and lived a very healthy lifestyle including lots of fresh fruit and vegetable juices. I suspect that part of the reason she died is that she was consuming too much carbohydrate from the juices, since sugar feeds cancer, but we were under the impression it was very healthy at the time. The toxins in the environment obviously played a role as well. I think to get cancer and die from it comes down to many risk factors all coming together. She found the lump just months after our Nan died from breast cancer. She did have chemotherapy after the diagnosis which she never fully recovered from, and I believe that this barbaric treatment also contributed to her demise.

I am extremely gluten intolerant. One year I was getting very sick daily and even after resorting to cooking all my own food, I couldn’t figure out what I was eating that caused it. Someone at a Gluten free support group suggested I look at my cosmetics like lipstick. The only thing I used on my face was face cream. She sent me a list of cosmetic ingredients with Gluten. The amino peptide in oil of Olay regeneratist ( red bottle ) is likely derived from barley. When I discontinued the face cream and resorted to olive oil on my face, I quit having constant daily bowel spasms, severe constipation. I was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus and had to be tested every two years to make sure that cancer hadn’t developed in my esophagus. I read every ingredient list on everything. A huge environmental toxic impact is also from BEDDING, FURNITURE, CLOTHES, PURSES, BELTS, etc. These items can also be endocrine disrupters. Try having solid wood, or metal furniture (best to find this stuff cheap in antique or second hand stores), wool/cotton/leather clothing, etc. Things that you use on a daily basis.
Like she said, weigh the risks vs. benefits to see if those things make sense.

It is NOT only unethical, animal research is PSUEDO science. It is total FRAUD, which kills BOTH animals, AND humans. Animals are literally being TORTURED TO DEATH. So when they test their deadly garbage on animals, and of course it KILLS them, THEN they are legally allowed to market it, in order to kill us. It is their legal loophole. IF their animal testing/research was legitimate, 'THEY' would NOT be asking humans to participate in the testing trials at all. 'THEY' already know their chemicals are deadly to ALL, but that is their legal loophole to get away with everything evil that they do. We are ALL being purposely EXTERMINATED.😮😢

This a very important conversation. I now check everything on EWG, INCI Decoder, Yuka and/or Bobby Approved. Even "clean beauty" products need to be double checked. I recently went back and forth in email with a clean company that puts Phenoxyethanol in a hand soap product. I suggested they could use something else as a preservative and this was the response: "We are very proud of every single product we have on the market and as such, we are known trail blazers in our industry." Last year I threw away over $1,000 in toiletries and cosmetics - mostly high-end brands that I thought were safe. Other than preservatives, there are other unsafe chemicals, metals and elements being used in cosmetics. Thanks!

Lost my mom to cancer. She was only 60. I don’t even think about retirement one day. I just hope for the best. Try to eat healthy, by not eating snack foods that are heavily processed. But everyone knows about PFAS in our drinking water, fruits, vegetables, rain water, lakes, snow, and so I know I’m not safe. I just don’t know why the government hasn’t done more. Everyday I read articles or see news programs about it but there seems to be some disconnect from our leaders. Money and greed have caused corporations to destroy so much. Our air, food, water and even our politicians are all tainted.

There is indeed some serious attention being given to the forever chemicals problem in drinking water but I'm afraid it's too little, too late. 93% of municipal water supplies in the United States are contaminated. Micro plastics are another huge problem. It has become ubiquitous and pervasive and is a global threat. These substances can be found in the most remote regions on Earth.

You can make a drastic change in your life with this knowledge which could maybe help you live into your nineties in better health. I've just been diagnosed with cancer, and I'm going to make drastic changes in my diet and environment once I get through the surgery and recovery. Fortunately, I haven't used cosmetics in years and filter all my water but that's not enough. I've used some strong cleaners another products that contain parabans and perfumes. We have to assess everything we eat and bring into our homes. You can still make changes and stay healthier. Have a healthy life!

Only protective mode for kids and a common intention can get me to not just give up and hope for the best. That thought itself can't be healthy either as I feel almost tearful if I think too much because it is like an actual health war with greed and dismissive attitude from our suppliers of important products.
