- What if there was one key nutrient that could help improve your health, increase longevity, reduce chronic inflammation, and even reduce your risk for Alzheimer’s? You’ve probably heard of this crucial nutrient: Omega-3! But did you know that over 90% of the population has suboptimal omega-3 levels?
Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Bill Harris, a world-renowned researcher, to discuss the decades of research he has conducted on omega-3s, and its correlation to longer life spans, reduced rates of depression, anxiety, and Alzheimer’s, and reducing chronic inflammation. Dr. Harris shares that omega-3 is one of the most researched nutrients and one of the top three nutrients that can drastically improve our health.
Dr. Harris shares his findings on what to look for in consuming quality fish, supplements, optimal levels, and how to test your levels via the OmegaQuant Institute. If you are looking for inspiration on why you need to dial in your omega-3 levels, this episode is for you!
William S. Harris, PhD, FASN, has been a leading researcher in the omega-3 fatty acid field for 40 years. He has over 300 scientific papers on fatty acids and health, has been on the faculty of three medical schools, and received 5 NIH grants to study omega-3. He co-authored three AHA statements on fatty acids and heart health. As the co-inventor of the Omega-3 Index (and other omega-3 blood tests) and founder of OmegaQuant Analytics, Dr. Harris has been ranked among the top 2% of scientists worldwide based on the impact of his research.
In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Harris dive into:
-Higher levels of omega-3’s lead to a longer life
-Omega-3s are in the top three nutrients that can improve our health
-Mindblowing research on smokers and the protective nature of omega-3s
-The link between low omega-3s, depressions, mood, and anxiety
-High levels of omega-3s and their correlation to reducing the risk for dementia and Alzheimer’s
-The research behind omega-3’s and reducing chronic inflammation
-The average omega-3 levels versus optimal levels
-What has led to omega-3 deficiencies and the rise in ultra-processed food consumption
-Reducing triglyceride levels with fish oil and the impact on our cells
-What are EPA, DHA, and ALA, and the sources of each
-How much fish consumption is optimal, and what kind
-Testing your levels via the Omega-3 index and optimal ranges

Doctors don't tell patients about this because they will make money from sick patients than patients who are healthy!
I love your interviews. You always ask such good questions without going overboard with the deep-dive science that I can't understand.
I really wish you would add chapters like 90% of other podcasters
I always appreciate your episodes Dhru.. you're a great host, you ask great questions, you don't interrupt your guests, you bring us informed experts in whatever field they're at.
Thank you, I for one have learnt so much from listening to all the wisdom through every episode ❤
Interesting. My parents and grandparents lived in the midwest on farms, ate oily fish once a year (salmon patties) maybe tuna casserole once a month and rarely ate freshwater fish, yet lived very healthy lives into their late 80's and mid-90's. Food was a lot less processed then and grain wasn't genetically enhanced. Maybe that's the key?
My grandmother lived to 94 and smoked her whole life. But she loved fishing and ate fish regularly.
Just had smoked kippers on avocado toast this morning. Pretty good once you get used to a a savory breakfast.
I was born on a small island in Denmark and grew up with a lot of fish but I have changed my way of eating toward a 95 % low fat vegan diet and that seem to have been beneficial for my knee pain that is nearly gone - but I love fish and would love to eat fish now and then with my vegetables and rye bread - and I will also add with omega3 supplements hoping that it will lover inflammatory markers as well and nourish the brain and keep it curious and optimistic rejoicing in life …🎶🍀🎵💚😄
Dr, Brooke Goldner has a short CZcams video on “Omega 3 Fish “ I’d recommend . If you don’t mind using seeds or oil flaxseed and chia are the best & safest source of omega 3
rarely ate fish while pregnant
thank goodness both of my children healthy , well and smart
if anyone was talking about this back then I would have often eaten fish
Seaweed for Omega 3 is what i prefer.
What a great show,
Beautiful guest,
I love your show,
God Bless.
He just had an anti christ globalist one world government demon on not too long ago, I don’t think he believes in God, but I could be wrong. …
Great information, thank you!
Great interview👍
Excellent episode🔥👏
Eat sardines.
Love them grilled on toast, topped with sliced onion, seasoned with salt and pepper plus a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.
Too high in purines if canned may be better fresh ?
❤ Sardines
Fresh Sardines Fish
High omega 3 is linked to insomnia and prostate cancer.
I question that everyone would want to live to be 100 or older, perhaps outliving your spouse or children, or your lifelong friends. Yes, I want to be as healthy & mobile as I can until I hopefully quickly die because I don't believe that most people are psychologically prepared to live so long with the inevitable pain & regrets of too many years.
I want to die before my closest loved ones, so I keep telling them to please look after themselves!
Always enjoy listening to you. You are the greatest interviewer ever thank you!!
Great interview
I take fish oil everyday. My hair and nails are incredibly healthy and strong…my hairdresser keeps asking me what I am eating because my hair is so hardy and fast growing
Awesome video
Love it🔥👏
I'm with you, guys👍
My eye doctor is big on getting in Omega 3. His office carried the Omega Quant test kits.
What about cod livers or cod liver oil for the omega 3’s?
question ....
if i request my PCP to include omega 3 index in my blood workup and Labcore performs the analysis will it be plasma rather than RBC and not be conclusive indicator?
As soon as I see "incredible" I just tune out.
What about chia seeds and omega 3?
no ,,thats ALA,,only one percent converts to EPA
Just ate a Sardine sandwich. Thanks 🙏🏻🏊♀️🏋🏻
Wild caught fish usually has more omega 3 fatty acids vs farm raised.
Well, better ratios compared to omega-6’s
Im intolerant of capsules and gels, which is purest form of fish oil?
I take Carlson's Very Finest Fish Oil. It tastes fine, not fishy. Rhonda Patrick used to use it, not sure what she takes these days.
Science backing up any data is ~always good but common sense, as expressed by Mr. Harris in this video, is just about as good.
Doesn't consumption of fish actually increase systemic inflammation?
Oily fish like sardines and anchovies are high in purines Extremely bad for gout!
It's NOT purines that cause gout- it's URIC acid....read "Drop Acid" Dr Perlmutter @butreally289
no,,the opposite
Eat micro algae supplements to get optimal omega3 levels and oily fish 1000-2000 mg per day - I love freshly caught heering, sardines and salmon ( and frozen when fresh) 🎵🍀💚🎶
Will one tablespoon of Cod liver oil give me all the omega 3 I need or do I need supplements?
@DhruPurohit, could you do a podcast about Fatty 15?
Age 100 comes too fast, we need to switch to thinking about lining forever, eternity
This was sooo helpful & humane toward kids, adults, soldiers, etc.
If yall could for even one minute out of 60 relieve the self-only focus of humans at this time & say "Gee, if nature's hardworking creatures, waters & plankton give us health, maybe we should think about THEIR health too, it would bring in bigger reality & free our weird, self obsessed anxieties about living forever on a dying planet. We could actually HELP earth revive, in our brief lives here.
Why not plug ocean care, mention dead zones (Chesapeake Bay, Gulf, etc) from pesticide & fertilizer runoff & city street asphalt & lack of forest, the fact that we've depleted & collapsed entire fish species, dolphins, seals & whales are starving, even plankton are dying, & tunas are still over-hunted & depleted, people could take 15% of our health money & plant trees, restore soil, create rain gardens v lawn & asphalt, VOTE for water conservation, give to Jacques Cousteau society or Oceana, WWF, etc.
That's just what the great doctor (God, who did not ask us to destroy Creation) ordered, maybe, not just the self-preservation that makes people stressed, blind, clobbered by toxins & fires & big oil leaders eroding democracies, water protections & climate action. Those grandchildren need a living planet. Thanks! 🌲🏕
I have a problem. I'm a old male and recently I've been taking fish oil. Just one, sometimes two a day. However, I often wake up with bruises, usually on my arms . I assume this is bleeding under the skin. So I wonder, if I'm bleeding near my skin surface, am I also bleeding elsewhere? I certainly do not want any brain bleeding.
I understand medical advice has changed about low dose aspirin, i.e, not recommended for elderly with no history of heart disease. I fit that. Given aspirin and fish oil are blood thinners, i think im going to stop the fish oil.
Be better off, getting rid of the aspirin and keeping the fish oil
@charlenewilliams219 that's a half answer. If both cause bleeding, am I better off with neither of them?
I didn't say it, but I'd love to hear from a medical professional.
I took fish oil, high-quality DHA and EPA three months, top end and I did not have bleeding or bruising. I took it to help my dry eyes. I knew that it was good to have the cellular membrane of all your cells working properly the way that they’re meant to by having the proper amount of omega-3 in your body. aspirin is an artificial component to your body. Don’t know the interaction of how it works pharmaceutically however, the natural way is the way to go. I believe the aspirin is probably causing the issues with your bleeding and bruising.
@@charlenewilliams219 I guess I didn't make myself clear. I haven't used aspirin for several years. I only mentioned it as a comparison to fish oil, i.e. if aspirin is no longer recommended for elderly because of bleeding, should I also avoid fish oil.
@@bill9989 it would be an idea for you to understand that omega 3 is an essential fatty acids foe our bodies along with omega 6-
Is there a chance that even if you are taking 2500 mg of EPA-DHA in a liquid form that your cells are not absorbing it.
Some good info but Too long. could have given the same info in 1/2 the time.
The ads every two minutes are incredibly distracting…sadly had to stop watching due to the constant ads…love Bill Harris!
I want to lower my cholesterol and decrease my triglycerides… I am not a fan of fish . What else can I eat to lower these ?
Simply take fish oil, in a gel capsule. Like he said, it's on shelves everywhere, or order from vitacost, etc. I take cod liver oil from a glass bottle, flavored orange, no fish taste, Nordic Naturals. Not sure if it's high omega 3 (cod liver) but my elders took it in these old Virginia mtns during the depression & onward, daily. Greens, liver, eggs, beans, cod oil, chicory coffee, spring water, sleep-- they knew some stuff.
@@lizafield9002 I take fish oil and gave for decades. Never tried cod liver oil. Eat all those things you listed. May have to increase my fish oil. I do not want to get dementia or any of those mental diseases.
I still want to know how you get the oil out of the fish? And what about rancidity?
@@gailmattingly9604 Gail, you won't get dementia. Meanwhile you'll help others not get it, including younger folks. There's good research in "The End of Alzheimers," but I've heard consistent basics of brain health include daylight & sun in eyes & on skin, sleep, wifi off when possible, discomfort (cold air time outdoors, sweating when possible, awkward foot terrain & alertness when walking), stretching/yoga/fascia limberness. It's hard to do everything, so just doing non comfort zone work & prayer for goodwill on Earth is my go-to. Bless you, good soul, you'll be fine!
Stay far away from sugar, processed food and get a fasting insulin test done .
First, the first time😮
?
is coconut oil good for the brain?
yes,,MCT oils can cross the blood brain barrier to feed brain
Are you supposed to eat the skin of salmon? If so, does it contain a lot of saturated fat?
Good question. I’m not worried about saturated fat, but was curious about whether I should eat the skin. It seems like if it has fat, it would be omega 3 fat.
Eat the skin...
What should plant based, vegan's do?
Start eating meat
vegan omega 3 (DPA, DHA & EPA) is made with farm-raised non-GMO algae, free of ocean-borne toxins, pollutants and contaminants and won’t give you “fishy burps". You get the essential fatty acids you need each day from the same place fish get theirs, algae.
Eat fish
Eating fish is good but nowadays we hardly find Mercury free fish. Do we have to trade off this toxic of eating fish rather than from supplements.
Most Omegas 3 are rancid. Any brand you recommend?
Omega XL is the only one that doesn’t hurt my belly.
He probably won’t say it, but Bill Harris’s company who started out in testing Omega levels, created a high potency fish oil supplement. It’s at their website Omegaquant. I was doing Nordic naturals and other decent brands and then figured go with the guy who basically created Omega 3 testing. Plus their supps ratios are formulated based on research findings.
Parasol fish oil.
Cod liver oil
@@michele.SalibaThat's my daily swig. From a glass brown bottle on fridge door rack, sustainable source. Sooo simple, but people complicate everything & then give up.
WE don't have four stomachs.
He said "Horses are vegan", which makes no sense. "You can only get omega-3 from fish' which is false. Guy is not that knowledgeable, turned it off.
????What about algae? That's what fish eat and I'm vegan. Vegan doctors recommend eating that form. Also there are other vegan plant foods like flax and chia seeds that contain omega 3's.
Got to push those drugs so you don’t offend the pharmaceutical companies …
Plant based omega 3?
Seaweed, flaxseed, chia, tofu, hemp. Plus plant based eaters are more efficient converting ala
Can not believe they can talk about the evolutionary process based on Newtons theory, they then talk about the human body and ts complexities and what the human body needs and this all came from nothimg.we have everthink we need ,but this is what we do or have done itd all about self, there is no mention of God
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Inland North American Aboriginals did not have access to oily fish only freshwater fish and grew taller, more muscular and more enterprenentrepreneurial (animal husbandry, planning, development of musical instruments and long distant weapons) than say the Aboriginals on the west coast who lived mainly on oily fish. They were a great deal shorter, bandy-legged, musical instruments were hollow-out logs, and killing was closeup and personal probably why they were cannibals instead of deer, and moose. So I wonder why the difference in these groups to what is being recommended.
5:01 what about mercury in fish 🐠🐟
Your guest said there was absolutely no downside to taking Omega 3 supplements (negative side effects). Wait a minute. If you do a search you’ll find lots of studies, including meta analyses, about the “significant” dangers of developing atrial fibrillation with omega 3 supplementation. One study found that patients who took one thousand milligrams or less of the supplement per day had a 12% increased risk of atrial fibrillation, and 49% increased risk if taking more than one thousand milligrams. Most experts recommend eating fish over taking supplements. How could you not address this in this interview?
Thought I'd just say that all the major studies say that vitamin D supplementation is a waste of time whereas clinicians who test and treat patients know from experience that vitamin D supplements are absolutely critical if you are black / Asian, old, fat, have little sunlight exposure to bare skin or use high factor sunscreen. The immune system depends upon it to clear up the body from invasive organisms to cancer cells. Guess who does the negative studies and benefits from illness and cancer..?
🚬 🤯 🐟
P.S. Dhru: WHY did you stop eating a vegan diet?
Thinking 🤔 same too. He said though you don't get omega 3 on vegan just when I was about to transition to vegan now I need to reconsider. I got so much out of my diet except for kefir I still like it. Now I need to go back to animal foods to get omega 3
@@tsebosei1285 You don't need animal foods to get Omega-3s. They are available in plant foods and any additional amounts are available in supplements
I stopped eating a vegan diet as well. I eat fish 3x a week and mest 2x a week and 1 egg everyday with vegetables and rice. I eat fruit and goat kefir in the morning. A few nuts and evo. I'm feeling much better than before!!!
@@MM-wu6fl But WHY did you go back to eating a carnivore diet? The evidence seems to show that the best for overall health is - VEGAN VEGAN.
Thirty-eight minutes into the video and no mention that vegans get DHA and EPA from algae??
Seed oil is healthy,in limited amount
No it isn’t. It’s terrible.
I am talking about the highly processed ones like cottonseed. Olive oil is good.
@@petec9686yes of course the first person was talking about chia seeds and flax seeds.
Bottom line what I am hearing contradicts the Proof with Simon Hill and Rich Roll and other Vegan champs. It appears you need to eat fish come rain sleek or snow. But I have also heard fish has mercury. The conversation are not helpful per se because it appears as though people who don't eat fish because of allergies are doomed for lack of omega 3. I will do my own homework
Who can afford to live to 100? 🤔
Some big misinformation here.
