Intro:
Recently, I have been the recipient of shocking allegations, that I, am frankly astounded anyone would suggest, these are of course, the allegations, that I am in fact, not a gamer.
Fitting reaction of shock
I know my friends, I am as outraged as you are, once again, the pineapple on pizza loving heathens have the audacity to cast doubt on my gamer credentials, needless to say, I would be crying at the club, if it was open. So I guess I will have to debunk these claims by taking on another gamer topic, one which will serve as indisputable evidence for my unflinching gamer status, but for this intro, let’s talk about another curious video game that serves as the backdrop for today’s subject.
Half-Life, it’s a video game, for gamers, like me, who wish to immerse themselves in a first-person shooter with a bit more depth, with the first being released in 1998, the second in 2004, and further successive instalments being released in 2006 and 2007, as well as some additional expansion packs in between. The first game focuses around an individual by the name of Gordon Freeman, who, like many people, triggers an alien invasion when an experiment that he’s running opens up a dimensional rift in time and space. Obviously, antics ensue, and he finds himself up against a diverse plethora of enemies in his mission to return stability to this facility, and the planet alike. Obviously, my synopsis of these games will remain relatively short so I don’t spoil it for anyone planning to play it themselves, but generally speaking it’s considered by many to be one of the greatest games ever published. This is the same story with Half-Life 2, which follows our good friend Gordon a couple decades on after the events of the first, it incorporates many elements present in its predecessor, while adding new features and improving on existing ones. In spite of their shooter status, the series was characterised by its heightened sense of ambition, with Valve President Gabe Newell stating that “if Half-Life 2 isn't viewed as the best PC game of all time, it's going to completely bum out most of the guys on this team”. But Gabe need not have feared, it was released to universal acclaim from reviewers and audiences alike, and is also regarded by many as one of the greatest games of all time.
After the success of the first two games, the developers decided to further metamorphose their approach, with the plan to release a trilogy of episodes, continuing the story from the lens of our protagonist, and a new non-player character by the name of Alyx Vance, a lovely young lady who was present in the previous game, but was now receiving a more prominent role as a companion to Mr. Freeman here. The first two episodes were released to highly positive reception, however, it wasn’t quite equivalent to the rampant appraisal that the previous games had received, though this did not appear to deter them. Episode 3 should have completed the trilogy, and was planned for release in Christmas 2007, however, was initially postponed, and then cancelled following a sequence of delays and changes to company trajectory.
Since then there has been a lot of speculation as to when the long anticipated “Half-Life 3” will be released. In fact, as I’m sure many of you know, there is an infamous meme, revolving around people’s rather excitable nature to seek confirmation of the game’s announcement, indulged by many throughout the industry. On Wikipedia, there is a page exclusively dedicated to documenting unreleased Half-Life games, it seems that in spite of their revered status within gamer society, the hype surrounding prospective Half-Life projects precedes them.
The series have elevated itself to this cult-level status, and wherever there’s a devoted fanbase, there’s typically market potential, combine this with the desire simply for more Half-Life content, yet a significant lack of it in the decade following the uncompleted trilogy, and people were longing for a saviour, holding out for a hero to give them what they wanted, and from the darkness, came an unlikely salvation, but was it the one we needed, or the one we deserved.

I'm gonna count that quote as an insult to the entire SFM...
So, some clarification, I knew one of the people that worked on this "game", and I've even seen their work on the L4D2 Steam Workshop, they are extremely well talented as a map designer and even has a dedicated group of testers to make sure the maps were structured well together, that way there wouldn't be a cases of people being attacked by Smokers through a wall or a ceiling, something I've even reported directly to the creator about when I was playing one of their campaigns after all feedback is still feedback so long as it's constructive.
Then comes along HDTF well they did work on the "game" but only as the talent they had which again was map design and I'm sure they did a damn fine job at that but once they were finished with them after that it came down to the level designers on how the maps should flow which from what I can recall was something that my buddy didn't really have much of an input about so they probably were shocked to hear people have issues with the maps feeling disjointed.

As someone who actually modded games and learned how to be a 3d artist from it, Berkan is your typical "idea guy" in a mod team. The only difference is he lacked the skills for the project he thought he could do. I do not believe the game's failure is because of actual malice. Just reality catching up to naivete, inexperience, and ego.

People who themselves have no skills to contribute, and the ideas themselves are usually extremely ambitious AAA-scale games.

when a self-appointed "perfectionist" says: "I don't want to release anything because my work has to be perfect” it is a huge red flag.
Part of the experience in sharing an imperfect thing (And put it into testing) is to learn how to improve on it.
"The perfectionist" is a pretty common sign in petty fanfiction
To be fair that is a symptom of perfectionism... with the other part being giving up *because* it's not perfect. But that doesn't excuse the behavior.
its one thing to be a perfectionist but you still have to work within the system youre in. Perfectionist or not, youre still expected to deliver on promises and meet deadlines as per the give-take relationship you have with your audience and anyone with a vested interest in what youre creating like investors or larger gaming companies. You have to show them what you've done within a certain time frame or your audience is going to lose interest and one you lose interest its hard to get it back. Regardless of whether you're personally satisfied with what you've made so far. And thats just the way the gaming community works. Even while being a perfectionist , you still have to honor and respect that thats the environment youre working within and that you have to play ball in order to get more play later on.
Plus proclaiming yourself as a perfectionist is too easy of a way to bullshit other people. I get immediately suspicious when someone cites that as their reasoning for not delivering on their promises. I'm more inclined to believe there are more bullshitters than perfectionists in the world. Even if he was genuinely a perfectionist, even perfectionists have to respect their audience's time and investment in their dream. Making a game isn't your way or the highway.
As a developer you have to abide by the rules of the gaming community or no one is going to care what promises you make or how ambitious your dreams are. And they are basic rules: Respect other people's time and interest in your dream, no one is expecting you to overdeliver on your promises so just deliver on what you promise within a reasonable time frame, if you cant meet your deadline its ok but make having to wait longer worth it, dont make promises you cant keep, dont be a dick to people who try to help you, accept help when you cant reasonably manage on your own, take responsibility for your own faults and recognize when something is your fault.

This game is the reason Valve got off their asses and made Half Life: Alyx, you cannot prove me wrong.
I can, Half-Life: Alyx was in development since around 2016 based on code leaked from Dota 2 (or the Lab or the Steam VR Home can't remember which one) referencing something called "HLVR" as Valve occasionally gets sloppy or purposefully leaks code referencing unreleased projects to generate hype and get opinions about their ongoing projects (Source: a Steam Dev Days conference by Robin Walker which can be found here: czcams.com/video/Fwv1G3WFSfI/video.html ) most infamously leaked code referencing a Half-Life 3 in 2015 from Dota 2.

@@DrZuluGaming there's more to it then that, espically with all the drama within the group between certain devs, TKMantis who did call out the lizard stuff but also just got in a lot of arguments, and then him milking the controversy for views and community posts, there was /v/'s siege on the discord and reddit where they took it too far and started harassing all of the developers while posting child porn, and just a lot of hate was spat between both sides
Espically as not all of the team were to balme for the actions of the more fetishist ones, who many of which worked hard to make the mod playable and add in stuff like the driving (too bad the writer of the NCR storyline was so far up his ass that he didn't let anyone else have a say in it)
And Frontier is a Free mod, Hunt Down the Freeman costed money
At least the team wants to take time to fix it up Too (pulling a Shaun Murray and not just running away)

i feel like it’s a lack of innovation. it’s the easy way out. telling a story through a generic, overdone cutscene instead of a creative, unconventional way to tell a story. it’s clear the dev didn’t know what he was doing and this is more proof lol.
At least they look somewhat good.
The first two cutscenes worked because they only took control from you in a context that would make sense (establishing the past of Mitchell and being kicked to the ground by “Gordon”). Once the cutscenes started taking place outside of Mitchell’s perspective though, that’s when the Half Life method of storytelling was lost.

The biggest problem with TRO's videos is that they're so good that it hurts waiting for the next one. I don't want TRO to change anything about how his videos are made, I just want to be able to fast forward to when the next one releases.

The snippet of the game was so painful to watch. The voice acting. The fact that the guy kept saying “ughhh. U..ughhhh ughhh..” he just got shot he should act like it.
Yeah, I don't think that's what getting shot sounds like... it sounds like he's just being annoyed by Scarface McMitchellson, rather than being shot by him. Real razzie worthy acting there... if they gave out razzies for bad game voice actors. I'd hate to even think Alex(ihe), was even involved with this, but he was. But seriously, President Keemstar just sounds hilarious. It sounds more like a bad SNL skit. How'd the rest of the cast not break down laughing just hearing his stupid performance?! "My fellow Americans". It's just too stupidly hilarious. It's like a joke I'd expect South Park to make or something. And from the way it sounded, it's like they want us to take it seriously! No way! I can't help but think about how Cats 2019 tried the same thing. "Look at all the celebrities we got!" Then they rushed the production, didn't really do much rehearsal, butchered a lot of the music, put the orchestra through hell (Sideways has a great video explaining it), and the CGI team had crushing deadlines, and the director refused to put the actors in mo-cap suits. This game project seems to have gone in a similar direction.
That’s a shockingly great parallel. Just how the demo for this game was poorly received like the cats trailer, and then the final projects weren’t much better.
@@godsnintendog Yup, and I forgot the parallel of financing, too. Cats 2019 had a budget big enough to build a quarter of a literal space shuttle. Just goes to show that securing massive financing never guarantees a good final product if the people in charge don't know what they are doing. A story of hubris to be sure.
Only problem is while Cats works great for Broadway, it doesn't work as a feture film, because the plot is paper thin.
@@sapphireannahope8121 I think there were ways they could have gone to make it work, provided they didn't try to do the "grit-filled Oscar-bait realism" thing. That was the biggest mistake of all. The other problem was making Victoria the odd-one-out, because the 4th wall is supposed to break in both the beginning and the end, and Victoria has no reason to pretend like she just learned, "A cat is not a dog!" in the end. :P
@@indigothecat I heard they were debating an animated version of Cats and honestly I feel like they could have made it work in an animated medium. There's room for suspension of disbelief in pure animation that you don't really get with the CGI bullshit they ended up with.
As someone who was in game development, it is HARD. You can come up with a great idea but if it isn't executed well, then it's going to be a dumpster fire. That's the biggest leason I've learn from it.

When I first met Berkan and started working on HDTF, he showed me an in-development map over Skype, where Father Grigori didn't actually die at the end of the Ravenholm chapter in HL2, but went through an underground tunnel that the player also goes through to confront him in an arena. The player would have been unarmed and would have to dodge Grigori taking shots at them until help arrived.
It's almost fitting that Activision Blizzard hired him, a company already well versed with riding rough shot over criticism. He got that job by affectively getting away with the con.

Even before the news about Activision/Blizzard came to light I’m not really surprised the man got hired.
He was able to hire people for a train-wreck and sell that product to people even with its decaying reputation.

From what I heard, throughout the development of this game, most of the assets were funneled through Discord, which, for obvious reasons, is a pretty bad idea.

It just feels genuine and real (I am NOT saying that the voice actors or the RRE team aren't genuine I'm just saying that this is extremely unbiassed).

mitchell is the weirdest one he goes from looking like geralt from the witcher to looking like john connor from terminator salvation in a timeskip and the later looks younger than the former.
Also, Mitchell's scars abruptly stop above his eye and start again below it, as opposed to going through it. I guess he'd look a bit too similar to Punished Snake if he was one-eyed.
