Today, we are going back to the gaming corner of CZcams, because as I have proven time and time again, I am a gamer, and today we are looking at an online MMO which some would argue is unrivalled in the gamer spirit that it has fostered.
Now, you may have suspected an undertone of irony there, but don’t be fooled my friends, because back in the golden days when The Right Opinion was a young lad, full of zest and zeal, there were three games which shaped his online experience: those being, Runescape, Neopets, and the topic of interest today: Club Penguin.
I can’t remember which order I played them in exactly, though I could take an educated guess, but I still remember them fondly for being able to capture sentiments of wide-eyed wonder and imagination that seem far beyond my grasp these days, and I know this wasn’t just a personal experience, I’m sure many of you similarly reminisce to a time where such avenues felt like a genuine escape to a different world.
However, as time has progressed, so have we, and such memories fade into the background of a distant past. Nonetheless, I find some consolation in the thought that if I ever wanted to attempt to emulate that escapism again, those sites are, as of right now, ready and waiting to welcome me home… well, all except Club Penguin.
Yes, Club Penguin, an abandoned abode. Their tragic demise seemed intangible to many, for a site which had once boasted over 200 million registered accounts, and 30 million active users, however, its last few years have been plagued by drama and conflict, eventually culminating in a rather cataclysmic fashion.
For those who are unfamiliar, Club Penguin was an online game in which your character could take the form of a penguin, and participate in various activities all over this online world, full of many other colourful fluffy characters controlled by very real people. As a child it taught you the ropes of online safety, and interpersonal friendship. It had some pretty fun games too, and for the young mind, Club Penguin helped prepare individuals for what the internet was going to throw at us, which is an ever more important learning curve in today’s society. Yet, in spite of its relevance, it no longer plays this part in the online sphere, and today, we’ll be finding out how that happened.
However, to understand its end, we need to go back to the beginning, and maybe provide a little background for anyone who never had the privilege to roleplay online as a virtual bird, unless you’re one of those avians, of course. However, I think it’s time to bring in a friend. Now, if you’re familiar with today’s guest you may have recently seen me pull off a legendary voice performance on one of his newest videos.

Neopets, runescape, anyone remember zwinky 🥴 or weeworld? Do they even exist still?
Neopets is simply trapped in time, that's the best way to put it, sure there's the mobile version but that's not much of a successor to boot.
Infected Candies the neopets story is relatively interesting tho. they were unknowingly sold to and owned by scientologists for a number of years, they still have an active user base of around 100 000 players (a small fraction of their hay day, but impressive all things considered) and have a pretty insane after-market for pets and rare items that people pay real money for ‘unconverted’ pets or painted pets/pets with high battle dome stats/pets with desirable names (4-6 letters, no numbers, pronounceable, etc). Ive also heard of a lot of account hacking and pet stealing in order to sell these pets to after-market buyers. The neopets economy is also pretty complicated/interesting and can be cited as an example of what happens when inflation is not controlled. Tbh I would love a 1-2 TRO deep dive bc i’ve run dry with Neopets vids and I still feel like there’s so much I don’t know

It's so sad and ironic how the original Club Penguin's intensions were to make a fun and interactive experience for kids whilst teaching them about online safety, yet what it ended up becoming under one evil man's actions was an online platform to manipulate, harass and abuse these same kids instead.

I always assumed Club Penguin fell because it was kinda predatory. Like, you could play the game for free, but anything that was fun required money. It was micro-transactions before those got popular. That, and you could get banned for the flimsiest excuses. I distinctly remember having to contact customer service to unblock my account numerous times.
CP didn't have microtransactions, it was basically a RP based MMO with a subscription

I played Club Penguin Online. I didn't know anything about the toxicity of the staff until I saw all of the bitterness upon shut-down. They seemed pretty passionate and engaging before that. I steered clear of Club Penguin Rewritten because I heard about the data breaches. I thought CPR was the shady one. CPO did have "unrestricted" servers, which I opposed, but the main servers had pretty strict censorship; you never knew when a word might be to harsh or too close to somethin else and get blocked. Sure, some terms escaped the filter, but that's to be expected. When there were more "edgy" conversations, one could usually gather two things: 1) parents need to better monitor their children's online activity, or 2) a large percentage of CPO users were older teens or adults who played the original game in their childhood.
Club Penguin will be dearly missed, long remembered, never replaced, and maybe that's the right thing.
Same here. There’s a part of me that still wants to join CPR but I can’t put my trust in a game that’s had two massive data breaches. CPO seemed good until it became clear that Riley was up to no good!

Used to be one of the mods in CPO for a short time, and tbh I just find the whole situation at the time quite amusing. I did not participate in Rilley's shenanigans (he didn't trust me enough to give me more stuff to do), just monitor the server activity to make sure none were exploiting or crashing the server. I had a feeling something's off with new staff rapidly popping up and many of them weren't suited with mod's work (I guess some just wanted the title to brag with friends).
Now watching this video it's like reliving my old days again.
The Right Opinion and The Internet Historian. A match made in heaven.
When I was starting out in composing music for media (like.... fresh out of high school) my GRANDPARENTS of all people got me connected with the guy who wrote all the music for Club Penguin and, at the time, Club Penguin Island. I flew out to Kelowna and went to the Club Penguin building there; the staff were so nice to me. I was given a grand tour and was able to sit in the studio and watch how the music stuff was done. I was not really a fan of Club Penguin Island, as I really really enjoyed the original Club Penguin, but the staff who were working on CPI really did care about their jobs and their fans. They had fan art plastering the walls in the hallways. It's a shame the game never had a chance to continue growing and evolving. They had a great team working on it.

I miss toon town too. And pixie hallow. Those three games (along with dizzywood) were a huge part of my massively isolated homeschool life. They were literally my only socialization- I wish they had never ended them. Someone should make an adult version. Not with adult situations- same exact games but only adults. I think it's sad Club Penguin never truely got to see it's full potential, there were a lot of interesting ideas and stories the team could have elaborated on before Disney acquired the game. It went from a goofy game with a lot of heart to an empty husk Disney only used for advertising, and that's really disappointing.

Disney didn't really start making the game worse until quite a while after they bought it I think. Like how Microsoft owns Minecraft but the Java edition is still like it always has been.

@@coolfred9083 you are right, when Disney bought CP it was actually really good for the game, their budget went through the roof and they got a lot of advertising and merchandising which helped the game grow a lot, the parties got bigger and better, there were more frequent updates and so on
It really only went downhill when Disney stopped seeing CP as a game but as a billboard they could advertise their shit on
It got so bad that most of the parties were either yearly parties that didn't change or evolve or Disney propaganda parties for their TV shows and movies

Minecraft imo became shit after Microsoft owned it, the fact that the ports are referred to as "Java" and "Bedrock" edition alone shows how bland the game has become. The moment 1.9 hit (1.8 was when I stopped playing, 2014 was when the already unceasingly toxicity became too much) and fucked up the combat system and nerfed things like the echanted golden apple for no real reason, I stopped caring about Minecraft altogether.
Every single thing they've changed since then, whether it be the textures or the soundtrack, has made the game less memorable much like how Disney turned Club Penguin into a bland product with sponsorships and advertising up the ass.
At least Club Penguin ended, compared to 'Minecraft' which still 'thrives' with retarded degenerate fucks like Dream and his disgusting 'community' giving Riley a run for his money.
I remember playing Club Penguin on Miniclip and sharing my best friends premium account at like 9 years old. We would speak on MSN simultaneously and used to do something similar to trolling before knowing what trolling was. I was addicted for so long and even dipped in and out as a teen. @@brunoarnoni To explain in like 3-4 sentences from my understanding, md5 is a function that converts your password to some other encrypted value. It is practically impossible to use the encrypted value to get the original password using maths. However, when u have a table with billions of records where the key is a password and the value is the encryption, it becomes very easy to find the plain text original password - u just compare it with the list of records that exist in the table to find the paired plaintext password and usually it will. That's part of the reason websites recommend using hard passwords so in case their database is hacked, those passwords(encrypted values) won't appear in any tables. It's probably a little more complicated but that should be it

It might have been worth pointing out that 'non profit' does *not* mean 'not earning money'. Non profit just means that whatever income there is, is being spent in order to keep the income generator bringing that income in. For example, hosting/server/equipment/staff costs.

Yeah, having an online chat forum always runs that risk, even if club penguin wasn't shut down for that reason. (That was likely part of it, honestly. Club penguin definitely had its fair share of creeps who snuck around their censorship pretty easily.) Been a fan of this channel for awhile you do an incredible job at documenting events while keeping it humorous and the editors do such a incredible job just finished the half life video yesterday.
Also I would like to say thanks for mentioning box critters at the end I have been part of the community since 2019 and making videos documenting the progress and next month it will be box critters 2nd anniversary and the game is very much still in beta and is missing a few features compared to CP but Lance is programming and the twins who drew most events and rooms in cp are doing the artwork for bc and Chris Hendricks other known as Screen Hog who made most the original music for cp is making fresh new music for Box Critters and Jen who was a cp team member is also part of the bc team.
And I can say the team are amazing they are in constant contact with the community listening to feedback and what we would like to see in game and even allowing content creators like myself and fan artists to have a place to show our hard work and love for the game.
And I know bc wont ever come close to the impact CP did but if people want to relive them memories you should give Box Critters a chance despite the little features compared to cp it feels like just the same as there is the original artists and sound designer and developer all behind it also I want to add the community is so awesome and if anyone considers checking bc out the fan server is here The Critter circle. discord.gg/6z5rKKs

In regards to Rewritten-
Starting last year, they had begun to do more original events instead of reusing the same ones as the original. While the themes have somewhat stayed the same, they have made twists with them to make them their own.
The owners have also been much more active and communitive with the community since the original owner left, and have been much more open in general.
The ads are a thing, which I can confirm from my own experiences. It does look like a lot of the revenue has gone towards making sure the site stays afloat, and security has been turned up quite a bit over the past two years.
They arent perfect, but they've definately learned since they started, and have improved.
It seems Disney isn’t taking further action against them as well, it’s almost like they issued the DMCA to quiet down the media but with no current plans to follow through. With the amount of effort the devs are putting on cpr, it really seems they’re maintaining good intentions.
