  • The GW-9400 is one of the classic G-Shocks in my humble opinion.
    It has all the hallmarks I look for including tough solar, light, comfortable, compass and strong as heck.
    I purchased the blackout version a few months ago and love it, however I decided I would do a project where I upgrade to a Carbon Fibre strap and lo and behold I came across a very interesting opportunity to add the band and bezel of the ‘Love the Sea and the Earth’ GW-94001KJ-3JR version. This was perfect as I had always loved this particular model but it is very rare these days and costs in the region of 2000 USD as far as I could see.
    So in this video you see me add the green jelly bezel and carbon fibre strap to my blackout Rangeman and discuss my thoughts, reflections and possible next steps.
    I feel this modification delivers a unique watch, taking the desirable elements of the blackout version and coupling them to the carbon fiber strap and green jelly bezel it is rather special. It is probably a true one-off.
    I hope you like this video/ mod, feel free to leave a comment on you impressions and whether you would keep it in this setup, Cheers!

    Looks fantastic! and thank you for the detailed explanation and video. I just recently purchased the newest black and yellow version of the Rangeman, the GW9400Y-1. I also ordered the same bezel and straps like yours. I can’t wait for it to arrive and do the mod like yours. This time it will have an all yellow body, similar to the limited original release with the positive LCD but the difference will be having more yellow plastic colors for the main display. I think it will look better than the original!

    One thing I find really helpful with taking apart such things: do it on a tray with a raised lip. If the screw falls off the driver, it wont roll on to the carpet or down the back of the desk. Also, put the screws in a mug, glass or other container until you're ready to put them back in. Three guesses how I know this, haha.

      @stormrider1119  Před 3 lety +1

      Haha. I can imagine exactly why you know this. D'oh! I'll do that next time, thanks for the tip. Especially if I do a more detailed strip down as I see some tiny tiny springs in some of these watches when you open it up fully.

    I used to have the olive green one, but the negative display on that one is so light I couldn't read it. Sold on ebay. I just got the normal black one today with the positive screen. Very happy with it and can easily read it. Changed to adapters and nylon military camo strap. :)

    Hey buddy... I have to totally agree with you with regards to the Mudman G-9300 with regards as being the best beater. The compact bezel design with those not so easy to press buttons, really makes it the perfect watch that can go into any situation, without buttons being set off by mistake.
    The GW version has the carbon insert in the resin strap to prolong the durability, but the price difference for that and MB6 doesn’t add up? I sold the camouflage version GW-9300 on eBay. I had about 300 watching but nobody would even go for an offer, so I made it an auction with a starting price of 99p, the bids came in, but with very little increasing amounts, and after 6days it sold for £135 with free delivery to the USA... with eBay/PayPal fees and £15 shipping costs I placed about £100 back in my pocket, and I bought that watch for £350 new with used ones going for around £300. A deal is a deal and honoured the sale, as I’ve had many deals pulled from me, so know how tough that is.
    Back to the GW-9400 Rangeman, I’ve got a few Jelly bezels and straps and enjoy swapping them around, really gives it refreshing look, but you’ll find that the original bezel and strap are the best.
    I’m still playing with mine trying different ideas, went chrome backing on the LCD just for something different, now I’ve gone totally white that looks HD. Still playing with luminous paint, and looking at ideas for an alternative backlight... found some UV SMD LED’s ;)
    Cheers for sharing my friend... HaPpY Weekend too!

      @stormrider1119  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks for the comment as ever man. I'm really interested to hear how your luminous related modding develops. There is so much scope to enhance these G-Shock with some relatively simple but innovative tweaks. Yes swapping around the bezels and straps is clearly great fun. I'll be doing more of it for sure... Cheers!

      @@stormrider1119 I did have a fun video on my original channel when I did my first Jelly bezel swap, and I added lume behind it just to give it something different... but you add chrome foil to really make it look almost like liquid metal. These Jelly bezels have come down in price, and you can tint them yourself. I think clear with chrome would look amazing on your stealth Rangeman ;)

      @@stormrider1119 *This orange rangeman band and bezel that I have is not carbon fiber, it's a real orange color unlike the red orange color of the Kobe City. I never saw an orange one like this either and had to buy this one when I saw it on ebay last year. I ordered it around Thanksgiving time last year and I just now received the band and bezel in the mail yesterday from Japan. The letters on the bezel were unpainted so I painted them blue and white, looks very good.*

      @@stormrider1119 Ha! Yeah, I am getting that impression about G-Shocks being a slippery slope. I did see your comparison vid on comparing your Mudmasters. I find I am wearing mine much more than I anticipated (though I'm wearing my Sinn EZM3 as I write this). I get a couple of emails from G-shock a week with new models. I think Casio is hitting it out of the park, as we say here in the States, with G-Shocks of late. They know who and they are, and they are completely unapologetic about it; there's no pretense or haut horologie frou-frou. _"Hey...we're quartz, we're tough, and we're cool. Mostly we are just really good watches and we are fun, also. We're G-Shock"_

      @@stephenscharf6293 I agree, plus they have a wide variety of products that appeal to many, my wife has the GM-S and it never leaves her wrist. They don't try and be anything but tough, low maintenance, practical and good looking. Works for me - I simply have better things to be doing with my time than winding watches or sending them off for service as they are dropping 15 seconds a day. My G-9300 never fails to amaze me what I've put that watch through and how it is still functionally perfect after 10+ years - never had to even change the solar battery...

    The problem with seeing the negative display is near dusk or low light. You need light to shine off and reflect the digits, and at dusk there is not enough, yet it's also not dark enough that the light does much good either. Need bright light, or total darkness.
