The last scene with the poker is, to me, Picard finally acknowledging that he's not just a Captain with a crew, but a person with friends. Really good friends. Huge moment, and an excellent way to finish the series.

I was with you when we started on Voyager and you didn't have proper lighting. You had hair; blue streaks if I remember correctly. I've literally spent hundreds of hours listening to you.
It's been an absolute pleasure. I honestly like watching your reviews more than I even like rewatching the episodes alone. I've never found a friend in real life that loves Trek as much as me; listening to you makes me feel not alone.
I like your views and get why even when I disagree. You may never see this or chose to ignore, but I've lived my whole life loving something in obscurity. You've made me feel a part of a community that loves Trek, and that's a gift I could never thank you for enough. Love you Arche.

It’s like someone expecting a relationship with an old lover that ended 25 years ago to continue where it left off. Not going to happen. The heart and soul has gone from many old shows like Star Trek, they are just “intellectual properties” to be bought and sold now. I avoided Picard like the plague.

“But the Chief Engineer isn’t on board. Mr O’Brien, Trust me. I know you can do it. All those years you spent as a child building those model starship engines, they were well worth it”. - I love the warmth Picard shows to O’brien here to give him confidence, Picard remembering that O’Brien used to make ships in bottles from the episode ‘Booby Trap’.

  • @rafetizer

I think the poker game idea was great, because it's a no-tech throwback that we can easily identify with. No fake holodeck stuff, just real people playing a game in a friendly, personal setting. It goes a long way to humanizing the crew that we already know and love. Picard's "I should have done this a long time ago." and the hesitant look from the doorway is probably some of the best advice one can get before its "too late" to do so.

My sister and I had a running Word doc going last year where we wrote down everything horribly wrong/bad/poorly done/confusing/nonsensical from ST: Picard. After about 4 pages of notes after just 3 episodes, we just stopped watching the show together (I carried on by myself, glumly). I'm very curious to know what form your Rumination on that show will take, because having seen your Ruminations on TNG, Voyager, and DS9, I'm not sure how a Rumination series on a hole-ridden, "puzzle-box" narrative show like ST: Picard would even take shape. Can the entire show be a Lamentation? There's so much decaying meat on that bone. All the elements of story that you love--rational plot, characterization, setting, etc. --none of it is there. Red Letter Media did a pretty good job of lambasting it, but I'm very curious to hear your thoughts. The "family" of the Next Generation deserved better.

    • @Arbbal
      @Arbbal Před 3 lety +2

I think it would be possible, and not just for Picard, all of the Kurtzman Trek. Rewatch his Lamentation of Nemesis if you haven't already. Hearing Lore go off about how horrible Kurtzman was even back then, and knowing that ended up being the very person the executives handed the keys to the castle, I don't see Lore as the type to pull any of his punches.

Hilarious that he has such reverence for "the upcoming Picard show." In honesty I never watched any of the false-trek after the 2nd Abrams trash movie. But everything I read about it indicates that's the right decision. Who knows what Lorerunner will think about it. The guy doesn't like BSG so it's not like I agree with all of his tastes.

Damn.. last Lore TNG episode hitting me in the feels like the poker room scene. My pops always said to me, if this episode was a movie, even as it was, he would have gotten his moneys worth. That last poker scene always chokes him up, myself included, I can tell it really hits both of us different in the more recent times than in the past. As the years have gone on in life, and relationships change, and people/friends/family pass on(in life and death) it just hits different now being in his 60's now and myself in my 30's. I dont want to get too deep, but that last scene really just makes you reflect on friends/family/and oppurtunity both still present and lost.
To you Lore... thank you for being you, YOU are what made this series special!

  • @robertkreitler6727

Speaking of eye for details, they used the season 7 captain's chair instead of re-creating the season 1 chair. Which is odd too because the first scene on the past bridge (with O'Brian on the bridge talking about changing starfleets orders) the captain's chair is missing. I wonder if they couldn't find the original or simply ran out of time. The chair on the Pastuer is very similar style wise to the 1st season which is interesting to see too.
Then again later they are talking about 3 tachyon beams from the Enterprise but in the future it is the Pastuer, not the Enterprise.
Off the wall stuff you notice watching things for the like 50th time.

All Good Things has always been one of my top 5 Star Trek episodes. You telling me how hard it was to get it rolling and giving me your thoughts has only elevated it for me. I’ll always wonder what might have been, but I’ve been on a character arc of my own for a few years to accept what is and move on. Now seems like a good time to conclude it.
Also, I love that the Irromodic Syndrom makes it totally possible he acted exactly as he did in the future without the time travel, sparking the initial effect that required he time travel. Just a neat little touch.

I feel like the final lines speak of their respective series' heart very nicely:
TNG, a show all about exploration has "the sky's the limit".
VOY, a show all about the journey and making a home together, "set a course, for home"
DS9, all about progression, world building, acceptance of things having a dark side but not letting that defeat you, finding constants and common ground amid conflict, political change - "the more things change the more they stay the same"

I started watching TNG in January with season 3, and have since gone back and watched a few of the key episode from season 2 and have finally gotten to the end of the show after bingeing season 7 to move onto DS9 for the first time.
I've become so fond of and attached to these characters over the past few months and am not afraid to admit I started to tear up during the poker scene, as cheesy as the "let's all be friends forever!" conversation was!
I've seen most of the ruminations of the episodes I've watched. Like others here have said, there were points where I had agreed and others where I have disagreed. But the reasonings and insights have been great to hear and learn from, and the extra details and layers of meaning you point out have always been great, and changed my outlook on an episode every time.
I know this probably won't be seen two months after the video was posted and about a year after you filmed this review but I'd like to say thank you. I'm now moving onto DS9 and the ruminations that go along with each episode, and eventually I might find out what this Dominion thing is I've heard so much about!

I think part of the reason they made the Klingons the bad guys in the future is that they wanted the Enterprise to cloak, but the only way to do that without people thinking "uh, what about Pegasus?!?" was to remove the Romulans as a power (and therefore annul the Federation/Romulan treaty).

  • @lancebaylis3169
    @lancebaylis3169 Před 3 lety +1

Ironically the Worf/Troi thing *was* brought up again..... in a deleted scene from the script of Nemesis which never made it film before being cut: I'm paraphrasing here, but IIRC it was during the scene where Worf is protesting having to appear naked at the Betazed wedding ceremony, and John Logan's script has Deanna Troi chide him with "It's tradition Worf, as a Klingon I thought you of all people would understand that", before looking down at his lower body and adding, with a cheeky grin to Riker, "Besides, I've already seen it."
Yes, really. I am not making this up. It really is in the original script for Nemesis.

Actually Lore I teared up at the end of your review. Great job. Looking forward to your original Series reviews.
This is the last time TNG ever felt like real Star Trek. The movies were all lacking in many ways, and all the garbage that Bad Robot and Secret Hideout has tried to tell people was Trek just because it had the name slapped on it has failed miserably and only caused the fan base to shrink. In fact my 15 year old cousin Drew, had only seen the newer stuff as of last year. He wanted to see the older stuff to compare. So my brother and I,along with my 10 year old niece, showed them all the original episodes that tied in with the movies,Space Seed,The Doomsday Machine, Journey To Babel ECT, and then did the original movies along with some TNG. Both of them actually liked them far more than the new junk. Drew wondered why the new Picard was so poorly done and my niece, Addison, now likes original Spock and Mccoy. In fact it was really funny the other day when I walked past Addison as she was watching Netflix on her IPad and she was watching the original series. She just picked it on her own after playing Roblox. Funny. So much for the new show desperately trying to get new fans while pushing the older ones out of the way. Instead of being relevant they are pissing away what reputation Trek has left.

I know that this is late, but I hope you can forgive my tardiness on it.
I honestly didn't know that this was supposed to be a finalé that wasn't supposed to be as good as it was. I admit that it felt janky in most spots, but it just felt so good when the three Enterprises came together. I get something of a kick thinking that Yar (somewhat and for a second time) got the send-off she deserved: going down with the ship, protecting people from a danger. The bit with Q throughout, I honestly think that he wasn't so much chosen as the executioner as he had this trial sprung upon him and he was arguing with The Continuum when he wasn't with Picard trying to leave him the answers without just up and dropping the script on his head. That moment when he's with Future Picard I think is him (quietly) letting Picard know he did it...the surprise trial is over. The bit at the end with Picard at the poker game was a real hit in the feels.
My opinion, the movies were nice...but unnecessary after First Contact. And STP, don't even get me started. TNG had a beautiful send-off with All Good Things, the movies are a extra long coda. I liked (for the most part) Generations and I Loved First Contact. Insurrection was fun...but missed something. Nemesis I can enjoy if you skip the psychic intrusion (yes I know what it actually was, I'm not going to risk YT censors having a coronary and harming your channel, Lore).

I totally agree with you about there is a difference between good and bad fan service. Fan service ends up having some really wonky connotations, yet it can be a really important part of a franchise's last moments.
Troy and Wolf - Makes no sense. It was always Troy and Riker and doing a sudden change makes no sense.
Moving on - Again like fan service, this ends up being focused on through the negative lens when (as you point out) it can be a good thing. I think I get the point of it in this episode, the "wrongness" of the future was a type of 'future echo' foreshadowing of the episode's adventure. But it definitely doesn't work that well.
Horizontal/Vertical audience/information - I've got to admit, I had to rewatch this segment twice, but that's because the first time had me flashing back to Dead Poet's Society and how that horrid book of theirs tried to plot the success and quality of a poem before Robin Williams' O' Captain got the pages ripped out. Pretty sure no one will complain about that comparison. Anyway, I think this is somewhat highlighted in how the MCU has done their work. A lot of the grounding/foundation films are very vertical while the entire franchise uniqueness of the MCU is that they then pulled the plots vertical as the Thanos Saga came to a climax.
Data/Lore - I'm glad you pointed that out, Lore. It was something that jumped out at me when I first saw this episode yet was never able to put it into words, yet I knew there was something special about the future Data compared to the early ones.
Cassandra Truths - The problem with this trope is 99% of the time writers use it as a crutch for their stories rather than for any consistent and in-verse logical reasons. It's like what you say about twists, don't have them for the sake, have them because they serve the plot. Considering the future crew have experienced everything including time travel (!!!!), having Picard psychically zipping around the time stream is one of their tamer stories. Heck, the man had an entire life on another planet at one point. So yeah, this is one of the prime examples of where the Cassandra Truth trope is used for false tension.
Anomaly - I hated the point when future crew get to the area, and it's not there. It feels like an extra push of the "he's insane" thread that was, by that point, really draining to watch. It's definitely the weakest part of the entire thing.
Q - Great breakdown on Q's attitude throughout the show and especially in this episode.
I truly love the poker scene with Picard being the final scene of the true show. I do have to ask, have you ever read the Al Good Things book? It was actually my first introduction to the story rather than the episode itself and I really think it's a great (and emotional) read.

There were no next generation movies or a show called Star Trek Picard. All good things was the final send off for a great series and the greatest cast and crew in Star Trek and I am very happy and surprised that they made the conscious decision to leave well enough alone. I don’t know where this guy is getting all these crazy ideas from.

Coming to this a day late (work had me absolutely slammed) this ends up being another episode where I don't notice the problems because the story is so compelling. I have to admit I can't help thinking it is a particularly geeky version of A Christmas Carol. The final scene rivals DS9 for me - it hits very different feelings but is also very well done.

Rewatching TNG from the beginning, with the time manipulation that Q shows in this episode, when Troi says this place is real in Encounter at Fairpoint, are they actually in the past?

Summary: Picard learns from Q that he is to be the cause of the annihilation of humanity and begins an incredible journey through time from the present, to the past when he first took command of the Enterprise, to twenty-five years into the future. (Well, everybody knows this episode, so a summary is hardly necessary. It's a lovely last episode. Regretfully there are 2 1/2 bad movies after this.)

So, you mention you hate the Cassandra Truth. Me too. But I don’t think that’s what the future scenes are doing. I think they’re explaining the episode.
Notice: they never prove him sane in the future. I think that’s because it actually *is* the Irrimodic Syndrome. I think that the “first time” through: Picard went crazy and caused the Pasteur to blow up, and then died a crazy old man who’d just alienated all his friends. Q hated that happening to him, and also it caused humanity to cease to exist, so he decided to use that as a backdoor to let Picard fight it in the past and present, and then to take control of his body in the future when in the “original” timeline: Picard couldn’t convince the crew.

Or else it’s just that Q doesn’t read technical manuals.

I am watching Enterprise seasons three and four thank to your thumbs up for the last two seasons. Even to the risk of iconoclasm I prefer it to TNG and DS9. Their special ops don't falter like in TNG. They have the best special forces that were available aboard and they don't goof all the time. It is much more believable to see Starfleet prepare for insertion, espionage and sabotage by using their best special forces. Many plot twist are not new but very well executed like in the episode Doctor's Orders and the urgency can be felt when Enterprise resorts to piracy to continue on. Characterization has some flaws but I can live with them. Last but not the least, it has a story arc and continuity. I believe this is unique to this specific ST series. One more thing ... no Wesley Crusher prodigee aboard!

  • @singletona082

I remember staying up to see this through to the end. I also remember not really questioning the worf/troi moment because by this point they had establishedthe two were sorta interested in eachother and i thought 'oh hey they're having a go at it. Neat.' Then the utter REFUSAL to discuss itafteR? Picard told everyone about thefuture.... and even in show they comment that Picard NEVER would normally discuss timeline shennagins. Which when combined with that riker/worf moment at the end makes me think that those two and troi had a sitdown talk andWorf politely backed off because having a relationship with his friends is far more important to him than a fling.
Concerning Picard and using borg implants: I think Picard wouldh ave heard that treatment plan and went 'YOU ARE NOT FUCKING ASSEMILATING ME
And just having a huge... like... ungodly unholy massive PTSD episode over the notion.
As for 'but twenty years.' Well. How long have we worked on althimerz?
Like you I want to see the actual original script to this, because if the rewrite caused this much grief. Imagine what we wouldh ave gotten without the rewrite? Leave the jumps as the mystery until 'Oh....' and suddenly one last urgent thing the enterprise has to take care of.
Also I am convinced Q loved Picard. I'm not talking romanticly. I don't think he was all that interested in Janeway either except as a way to get a rise out of Miss Q. What i mean is for him Picard is that cherished dog. The one you found, or it found you after it got out of that puppy stage of life, and is just that one amazing dog. Nothing flamboyant about it but, that's The Dog. The one all others are measured against and the one you would do anything for.
Think about it. The Continuum basically told Q to take his dog behind the wood shed. Now do you see why he went to the trouble of giving Picard a way to fix this?

Really hope they bring DeLance back in a future season of Picard. Yeah, he's older and he's supposed to be immortal but there's at least three ways around that. #1: Use de-aging tech like they did with Data, #2: Have Q age his physical appearance as a kind of joke on his part or #3: Work it into the plot some other way, like's there's some kind of thing causing Q to age.

I read this parable many years ago.
A student of Zen approached a master and said, "I have left my old master. Would you be my new master?"
The master asked the student, "Why did you leave your master?"
    "Because he beat me."
The master raised his cane and whacked the student on the side of his head.
"Return to your old master and thank him for grandmotherly kindness."

In my hedcannon its' not that the anomaly would destroy all life per se, when you think like a Q I think the anomaly will wipe out the TIMELINE where humans exist. Which my extension course in temporal mechanics now tells me that when a timeline is 'changed', what happens is you jump into a time machine and it eripts an anti eruption taht erases the old timeline, and gets replaced by the new one.

The unbelievably large plot-hole surrounding the anomaly, the Worf-Troi out-of-nowhere "romance", and the fact that the "past" segments utterly ignore the fact that the Season One characters were universally unlikable, pompous jerks (anybody remember how Yar responded to Q's court? - by getting violently angry, beating up a guard, and then screaming that everyone, including Q himself, should get on their knees and beg for her and Starfleet's forgiveness because she was infinitely and obviously superior to them) are the only things that hold the episode back from a perfect score. Everything else is unimaginably good.
So, while it's not a perfect episode (I wouldn't even put it in my Top Ten), it's still one of TNG's finest hours. And what better way to end it all?
    9/10

Have not watched and will not watch any Star Trek TV after Enterprise till the wokeness plague in TV ends.
I have to call out the direct sequel to this episide, the Novel Q&A. It does a wonderful job explaining Q's motives. And the Contunum's. You see the Q are as gods to Human's. As in that is as good a description as any to their relative status'. But even Gods have Older Elder Gods above them. These Elder Gods have wiped out multiverse after multiverse. They sit in judgement. They have seen warriors, they have seen basically Organians, dry seekers of knowledge. The E.G were bored and unimpressed , that they decided the multiverses did not deserve to exist. They snuffed it out. The whole debate between Q and the Contium was who would represent the multiverse on the last day of the univrse, when the barrier is broken and existence ended. Who would be the one to be the object of study to these EG. No debate with the lowly mortal happens. The only defense is put on by our Q. You see it is Q's opinion that Humanity is the species and Picard in paticular who will be The One found worthy. The one who will impress these Elder Gods to spare this multiverse. Everything will be explained in this book. Including the Robin hood fantasy with Vaush.
    Spoilers here****
