I don't mind the "deeper scans" thing. More intensive medical tests also tend to be more invasive and time consuming. "Deeper scans" might require injection of radioactive dyes or medical nanites.
As for Picard's log, personal logs are sealed, and him making a log in the past could be used as evidence that he has actually been traveling through time since he can look up those logs once he returns to the present or goes to the future.

Hello, Nick and Robert. I've rarely ever commented, but I've watched every single one of these. I began watching your TNG reviews years ago, and like everyone, I've gone through some challenging times since 2020. Sometimes I've agreed with your takes, and sometimes I've disagreed, but I've always been there, and now that I'm at the end of this series I can safely say that during even my darkest moments, your reviews have always been there to make things just a tiny bit harder.
Just kidding! It's always been something I've looked forward to, and during times when I didn't have much to look forward to at all, these were a buoy for me. Thank you for the all good times, the Total Recall jokes, the Mondrion hate, Data staring at nothing for five minutes straight, and so much more. From the bottom of my heart, I wish this for both of you: live long, and prosper.

Congratulations on toughing it out for 181 videos...soon to be, let me guess...4 more? Season, series, and 2 season bloopers videos? Or maybe an entire series bloopers video? That might be a tall order, though. 😉
Seriously though, thanks for a rose-colored glasses-free look at one of my favorite old series. I still have good memories of the show, but most of them are of me and my friends doing what you guys do. That and discussing the issues the show tried to tackle and trying to come up with different or better solutions/responses. I think that's a big part of why I don't care for much of "Nu-Trek" because it seems like the showrunners put too much of that goofy meta into the shows. It almost seems like they saw how Trekkies joke around about all of the silly things in classic Trek and thought _that_ was the reason people liked the show(s). However, in my experience, I don't think many Trekkies actually really want a show that self-referentially makes fun of itself, so much as they simply want as good/serious a show as possible to watch. I don't know. That's just something that popped into my mind.
I'd be curious to see your take(s) on the Picard series. The first two seasons were pretty bad, but the third season (helmed by Terry Matalas) was a radical tonal shift back to what Next Gen was like. While it was chock-full of memberberries, it was such a radical departure back to the feel of classic Trek that I actually enjoyed it. It's still far from perfect, but people have been clamoring for Matalas to have more control over the franchise so it can get back on track. Especially since CBS is insisting on creating new series after new series in order to get people to sign up for their streaming service. They need somebody who actually understands the franchise to oversee it and basically shepherd future efforts.

They had Denise Crosby come back for the finale and missed the opportunity to bring back Sela for the finale. Maybe instead of having the Klingons be the threat, how about Romulan rebels led by Sela? They normally attack Klingon and Romulan ships but seeing a Federation ship in the Neutral Zone is a rare opportunity to get their hands on rare Federation technology. See? Thank you for the fun reviews and helping me relive the series! A couple thoughts. This episode, for whatever its faults, offers the best farewell to TNG, more emotionally satisfying by far (for me at least) than what we got from Nemesis or Picard season 3's finale. Even now, 29 years later, the ending still gives me some tingles.
Another observation: by the standards of network television in 1994, TNG was often the best thing on by far. Judging it by the context of what was on offer at the time would probably yield higher ratings, but it's still interesting to hear perspectives from those who never watched it in youth.

When Future Enterprise attacks the Klingon ship FROM BELOW, that had all of my friends whooping and hollering as we watched it for the first time. Star Trek never before had used the 3rd dimension so well before, not even in the Wrath of Khan where they specifically mentioned it. It was an example of them delivering something new and exciting, even in the final episode.
This ending understood the audience and delivered a satisfying conclusion for that audience.

The plot line has a few holes (eg: The anomoly gets bigger in the past and returning to the where the anomoly appeared in the future to see it being formed wouldn't work, it's the wrong way around, and also, the past crew seem to put an enormous amount of faith in their very new captain's odd orders).
Despite the minor niggles, this is an astonishing episode. There is some great character development for the future time-line and some great memories of the past time-line. The interaction between the characters in the future is really well done, with some great conflicts. Future Worf and Data are great.
The aging make-up is pretty good as well.
    Q is fabulous, as always.
The end scene is beautifully done. Patrick Stewart is fabulous (obvs), the way he sits at the table and takes a slow look at the rest of the crew is touching.

The basic problem was that pre-production on the first TNG film had already started. So a series finale could not be effectively a movie-type story, or an actual conclusion. For the same reason the Borg couldn't be used, since that would be held in reserve for a potential film script. Moving back and forwards through the series timeline and possible future was inevitably a way of ending the series, but not cutting off any options for the movies.

Writers had a challenge to write a story that would not interfere with DS9, with a small budget and to tie the beginning and the end together. At the same time introduce a new way of thinking where the perception of reality had a non-linear time perspective like the wormhole aliens that sent the orbs and made Captain Sisko the emissary in DS9 or in the 2014 movie Interstellar where the main character tries to use the tesseract to communicate with his daughter in the past by using gravity strings at different book shelves representing different time periods. Any place, at any time, or it is all happening everywhere all the time kind of thinking.

It goes back in time and the Enterprise follows. They they try to stop the first warp flight. Have a Landing Party try and make sure the first Warp Flight happens while the Borg is assumulating everyone on the ship. The twist, the warp flight was First Contact with the Vulcans. Also there were allong of good episodes in the season. Although it was a mixed bag.

It was the series that got me into star trek so I have a soft spot for it

Thanks for these videos and these episode reviews. I really liked the finale. I, too, thought it was a good book-end episode. I give your series of episode reviews an A-. The minus for all the times you disagreed with me so you were clearly wrong. :)

Great commentary, as usual! I'm a bit surprised for this had the same grades as "Drumhead," which had some of the most epic Picard speeches. I definitely agreed with Nick's 'A-' there. This, I'll admit, they had a slightly "too" clever explanation on the paradox "solution", which probably is nonsense, but worked in this series. I think they ended on a memorable high note, as there were some way worse episodes in the last season. I would give the two-part finale a "B+". Reverse Angle's Reviews, get a straight "A". They were usually hilarious and didn't hold back when called for.

Bringing out the heavy guns critiquing this one, but it's well deserved. Upping the stakes would be a solid improvement.
It would've been nice to devote some time to showing serious push back to Picard's plan in the Season 1 timeline, to the point of them relieving him of his command and confining him to quarters, him desperately trying to convince everyone that he is from the future by recalling things about them. Data would be the one to finally put the pieces together and work with him to take over the ship, as androids do. Maybe recruiting a few others along the way as Picard convinces them, Yar and Worf for instance when they try to stop him ("We _have_ sworn a duty to our captain," etc), Beverly for personal reasons, maybe Troi since she can sense he's being genuine (maybe her abilities improve in reverse - thanks anomaly!), a few others. Band of misfits type thing. It can't be any worse than what we got. Pile on the stakes til it looks like the national debt.

Definitely a thoughtful review! Am hoping you do more 90s Trek one day, but hearing new perspectives ln a show people thought was perfect at the time has been a breath of fresh air.
Nitpicks to this episode aside, I love this finale for it trying to be original in its own way, even if it is cribbing the basic alternate timeline idea of "Yesterday's Enterprise" and goes all meth with it.
Q helping Picard despite being told by the Continuum to wipe them out, while getting Picard to be the vehicle for humanity's form of execution was pretty cool...
I'm not sure bringing back the Borg would have been good. I like your take, but after Descent, I thought the Borg story was finished.
I do wonder if they tried to bring in Guinan or other characters, but had to rewrite. It's amazing that what was filmed comes across so good, but it might be due more to the style and execution than the underlying plot.
Still an A- for me. Or an easy in terms of season 7 considering how inconsistent season 7 was.
Oh, didn't Gene Roddenberry hate the idea of ships with odd numbers of nacelles? And yet the 1701-D with three never looked better.

You said you regretted some of your previous grades, well hopefully that includes "Most Toys" which you both rated bad. Grrrrrr. Also "Inner Light" which you guys surprisingly joined the mainstream and both rated an "A", that was the episode I was hoping you would tear apart as the more you think about it, the more stupid and horrifying it is.
But overall, Thank you for your excellent job. I seen and enjoyed every video (except the aforementioned Most Toys" & "Inner Light"), I don't know how you guys aren't getting at least 100K views every video, but I am sure many more people will eventually find and enjoy your videos for years to come.

Interesting grade polarity. I graded this one a B-. This one was a better time-jumping episode than most, but it's still a time-jumper and I feel it's something used too often (especially in this series).
