- Larry Cohen is one of the most important names in all of horror due to the complete insanity that comes from his films. Always looking for the schlocky gut punches to end all gut punches, Cohen’s style could definitely be considered erratic. And today’s subject is definitely no outlier. So join us as we cover 1981’s The Stuff!

The Stuff and the Blob(1988) make a good double feature. Chocolate Chip Charlie's body-horror transformation is still stuck in my head after all these years.
that scene of chocolate chip Charlie freak me out when I first watched clips of where the screenshot when the camera was facing at his opened mouth the stuff comes of out and gasp and got scared and I almost feel nauseous after that
Seeing The Stuff on HBO after my parents went to bed is one of my favorite memories from the 1980's. Now that I think about it, The Stuff was actually the first horror movie I ever watched.
I'm with u there on the 80s hbo lol
A classic!
Yes, I feel like It’s one of those movies HBO had in constant rotation. It seemed like during summer vacations it was one of those movies that was always on. Like “Excalibur” “Teen Witch” and “The Boy who could Fly”
@@scottloessel6493 Man, The Boy Who Could Fly; I watched that and Teen Witch with my sister many, many times
100% a cult classic. Well worth a watch for any fan of horror/sci-fi
One of the first real horror movies I watched as a kid. That scene with Chocolate Chip Charlie in the radio booth left me scarred for years!
Saaaaame. Charlie’s death gave me years of childhood trauma lol
Great flick! Always cracked me up how the first guy that sees the stuff bubbling from ground decides that he’ll just eat it.
That pissed me off so bad! So it was worth watching after that lol
@@drm__.767 yeah it’s a good flick just gotta take it for what it is lol
I love this movie. The old guy just reaching down to taste the stuff at the beginning is priceless
Another of those films from the 80's where the cover stuck out a mile in the video shop and being a horror fan at an early age it always intrigued me. When I was allowed to watch 15 cert films at the age of 11 I got my parents to rent it for me. It wasn't quite what I thought it would be.
Watched it a couple of years back as a refresher. Cult classic, good effects and a good social commentary on consumerism but in a satirical way.
The stuff kicks so much ass! Hell yeah my man!
Monkeyshine is the movie cover I was always scared of. I still haven’t ever watched that movie!!
Seen this movie around 20 times, its fun, scary and a blast. Looking back also 80's AF. Love it.
I remember the VHS box cover of the stuff alive in the refrigerator. This was a fun horror movie with gooey effects, cheesy humor, and a great characters.
Hell yeah, I'd buy a directors cut of this, I love this movie, it really pisses me off when studios mess about with films and completely ruin them, I'd love to see a version of The thing (2011) with the original effects instead of that Godawful CGI they replaced them with or a full extended version of Event Horizon with all the bits the studio had cut out of it, both of which i think will never see the light of day. So yeah, give The Stuff some love and give us that directors cut :)
I pretty well think we’re never gonna see the event horizon stuff which sucks :(
@@UnwrittenSpade I know and it's all the best stuff they cut out apparently, gutted :(
Event Horizon deleted scenes is lost, and is why they can't release a DC. Lost scenes may not even be in UK, or wherever it were filmed which makes them harder to find. I wish we got Maximum Overdrive X-Rated version sometime. Stephen King have a copy of it as far as i know.
I was 9 when this movie came out and I loved it! Some of the best horror comedy, alongside Evil Dead 2.
HALLOWEEN is near gang , and I can't wait to see what they have in store . This one is a childhood classic
I probably wouldn't have thought much of it when I watched it recently without Joe Bob Briggs covering it on the Last Drive-In. It does feel like some good ideas in an incomplete film, but it sure is fun to watch for the most part!
Cult classic all the way! The beauty of Cohen's films is that they're wildly entertaining and make you think without you even realizing it.
for a film class is college we had to reenact the scene where the kid freaks out in the grocery store. love this movie.
CAN'T GET ENOUGH... OF THE STUFF!! 😃🌟🌟🌟🌟
Best part is the intro. I replay that over and over again. Hilarious.
I loved this movie and remembered it fondly. A few years later there was a commercial for a yogurt that used the sung line, "You can't get enough of this stuff," just like in the movie. It had to be an accident, as all I, and anyone else who saw the movie, could think was that "your product isn't just made of live active cultures, it's sentient and ready to take over the world."
“Do you know why they call me Mo? Every time someone gives me money, I always want mo’.”
Can't get enuff of The Stuff! As the song goes. A classic sci-fi horror film about mind controlling parasitic Marshmallow Fluff, called The Stuff. Great movie.
It's good stuff! It's weird and scary as hell, with some laughs in between. It's a shame about it not getting its due in theaters, but I'm always happy to hear when such movies become cult classics.
i'd say the movie embraces the B-movie label in a positive way. it seems fully aware of being shlock, to the extent that it almost breaks the 4th wall, like in space balls and starship troopers... it's not cheap just to reduce production costs, it's cheap because it's making fun of cheap in a satirical way :) heck, even the monster is so cheap just endlessly bubbles up out the ground waiting to be harvested...
This was one of my favorites as a kid, always blew my mind that it wasn't more well known.
I love this movie! It's sad how few people knows it today...
Omg! That slowly turning bassinet with the pig hoof lopped over the side used to scare the crap out of me as a kid, It's Alive indeed.....
Thank you! Someone finally did a review of this movie. Creeped me out as a kid
"Are you Eating IT, or is IT EATING YOU?"
Same could be said about Social Media, are you using it or is it using you?
THE STUFF would sporadically air on either Cinemax or HBO throughout the late 1980s, usually late at night or after midnight. Just the perfect time to watch the movie. Good times.
Love Garrett and NEVER knew he was in this!!! That's y I love your channel because it makes me want to see all these films!!! OMFH thank you 😊 🙏 💓
Can't believe I saw this in the theater. Time flies.
A T-800 saying that is extra funny.
I remember when it came out, but didn't see it till sometime in the early to mid 2000's. My roommate had the VHS I think and I just decided to watch it one day.I enjoyed it immensely.
I Finally watched it last month... OMG... mesmerizing and Unforgettable!! 💯
Michael Moriarty is already a favorite actor of mine, "The Stuff" is so funny, quick paced, well acted and quite believable... Lil Scott Bloom literally steals all his scenes and Moriarty solidifies himself right UP there with other Great actors & actresses for making such a fantastic film!! 💯💯💯
the blob vs the stuff!! this needs to happen
That would be an interesting fight. The blob digests organics and the STUFF can make stuffies but what else? It hasn't done much damage by itself unlike the Blob which is almost a force of nature should it escape.
@@Mrcharrio what would happen if the blob eats the stuff? Would the blob become a pink stuffie? Maybe the blob is immune to the stuff. Either way it would be really interesting.
Enough is never enough!
A classic!
I love The Stuff!! From the trailer on tv to the consumerism.
I remember seeing this in the 80's as a teen on TV..thought it was great! But when ever i'v brought it up in movie talks no one and I mean No ONE has seen or heard of it. I'm so happy I'm not crazy!
Love it. Fun watch and safe for kids
As a kid some of the death scenes in that movie absolutely traumatized me.
Charlie’s was the only one that really got me. Where he opens his mouth colossally wide. Jesus
Larry Cohen really deserves to be better remembered. His movies always do have much more interesting characters than is typical for cheap horror movies. Always makes them more memorable.
One of my favourite films. I watch it every year
I put this in my top 10 horror movies. I love The Stuff for its own thing.
Release the Cohen cut so I can buy this consumerism satire now!!!
Also, I love the arc of the teen character, my worst nighmare: having your family being possesed by an entity and turned against you!!!
It’s both, and I love it!
Finally a special on the stuff!!!!!!!!!classic fun
I remember the cover in VHS shops in the 80's. However I have never seen this. This does not look awful and some B movies are real fun to watch, if you take them tongue in cheek. The 80's started making humorous horror films. You look at the VHS cover, take it home thinking you have a horror movie. Only to find out that it is more comedy than horror.
Häagen-Dazs should release a limited edition "The Stuff" ice cream during October, like General Mills does with the monster cereals.
Oh I remember seeing this movie years ago on TV. Probably on HBO or something like that. To this day, my brother and I still find excuses to squeeze in the line "Enough is never enough of The Stuff!" in conversations. I think the last time we did that was just a few months ago.
According to the DVD commentary on my copy of The Stuff, melted Häagen-Dazs ice cream was also used.
Loved the Stuff. Reminds me of the Love Death & Robots episode "When the Yogurt Took Over".
R.I.P. Larry Cohen. The magnificent genius who brought us the It's Alive trilogy. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I watched this movie so many times as a kid. I would love to get my mitts on a Director’s cut ❤ Enough is never enough!
The first horror movie I watched in 2022. Solid 8/10.
Loved this movie. Thank for for Cable in the 80s.
I DID see this back in the day. I rented it at the local video store (remember those). All I remember from this movie is: killer pudding, and "every time they give me money, I always want moe."
I have loved The Stuff since it came out, and i want to see the directors cut!
I saw it when I was a kid, there was a channel that used to show horror movies, slasher, monsters movies. As far as I remember it wasn't a bad movie.
One of the best Secret handshakes of the Horror Community! Fan since its release back then. Another one: The Hidden. Just sayin'. Peace out!!
My mom rented this when I was a little girl. She had already introduced me to Killer Tomatoes, so The Stuff was a visually disturbing and hilarious good time!! ❤️
My fingers are crossed for Vinegar Syndrome or Shout Factory to give us The Stuff’s directors cut!!
I saw The Stuff when it came out and loved it.
Now is a good time to watch the doc King Cohen, if you haven't already. Dude really went for it in his filmography.
Finally saw this on an episode of The Last Drive In on Shudder. Good "stuff"!
My favorite Larry Cohen film.
Just finished watching this movie. Said out loud “What the hell” so many times.
Good movie. Good times. I have it. Grew up enjoying this awesome movie.
I totally forgot this existed, now it's like I just watched it.
Cult Classic…loved it as a kid…appreciate how many good people that are in it
Learned about the Stuff from James Rolfe, definitely one of my favorite B-movies around. While it's genuinely funny and actually has something to say with its goofy premise, it really does feel very scatterbrained. I'm not sure if it would need to be an hour and fifty minutes long but I would be very curious to see that unearthed director's cut
I remember this! Can't get enough of The Stuff! Hey, the main character guy, He looks like Eminem. Lmao
With everything going on in the world today with these stupid health diets and all the sensationalism going on in the media this movie needs a remake
Total classic, and, a great indictment of American consumerism.
one of the plotlines in the most recent run of doom patrol (written by gerard way) is a reference to this movie and it's very fun to me to know gerard way has watched this movie too
This is a movie I very much love. I dust it off once every four or five years and it always satisfies. Just like the titler Stuff.
It's not as cheesy as it could be. It seems well-paced, there's not a lot of "exploitative" stuff in it, and there's a great deal of dialogue and character development over cheap thrills. In fact, it gets a bit slow towards the end. But Moriarty owns... what a character.
RIP Larry, Paul and Danny 🙏
Classic!!!
Never forget Chocolate Chip Charlie.
Can’t believe I’ve never seen this!
(The stuff) is in the same social commentary movies as (They Live) too bad we didn't get a (Soylent Geen or The Omega Man/I am Legend) remake for the 80's which would have been a great fit for a boxset compilation.
The Omega Man 1971
Soylent Green 1973
1984 1984 (same date as name)
The Stuff 1985
They Live 1988
I love this movie for it's social commentary and campiness but I have a hard time believing anyone has ever found The Stuff scary. Lol. I feel like it goes for awkward comedy consistently.
You say that jingle is able to hook you? I got 9 words for ya-"3 more days til Halloween, Halloween, Halloween. Sil-ver Shamrock!" 👋😜
Also gotta say it's real strange how no one has ever talked about this and The Blob at the same time.
This is a great movie - it knows what it is & doesn’t try to be more.
Love this movie!
First saw this on the Space channel in a double feature with Squirm. Also why I can never eat marshmallow fluff.
"The name's Mo Rutherford, they call me that cause when they give me money I always want mo."
OMG, If they marketed a marshmellow icecream a year or two behind the movie or any ad's for the movie would have been perfect. Imagine it being sold in your local stores and your the big lover of this new "Stuff" although if that kid was in highschool what type of backlash when the movie came out? Good or Bad?
Cult classic 4sure , 1 of my all time favorite movies.
I assure you, I DID see it. Interesting mix of The Blob and Invasion of the Body Snatchers and consumer satire.
Five bucks was a lot in 1985... a big mac meal from Mcdonald's was only $2.59... sure it's not Kraft Food Services... but it was enough for lunch and dinner. :)
i really wanna see that directors cut! sad don't get B movie horrors like the stuff, street trash and the blob anymore
I saw this movie when I was a child. It fahreeeeked me out so badly, that if and when I saw a puddle of any white stuff my mouth would be glued shut. Didn't matter if it was milk, paint, yogurt, or anything else.
This is actually one of my favorite movies 😂
I loved this movie growing up
If you haven't seen Cohen's It's Alive or Q, check them out. Great films.
1 of my fav 80s b movies.
It's funny I came across this review after just watching a documentary about the microcosms that share our body and that roughly only 45% of us is us.
These microcosms can also effect our physical and mental health.
So maybe "The Stuff" is just a super concentration of microcosms that want to be eaten so they can take over their host's body.
I always wanted to know if there was something bigger underground creating the STUFF
I Must of seen this a hundred times 😎😎😎
Definitely a classic 👌!!!
I remember watching that after work one night like 9 years ago, I thought it was good it's got the dad from Trolls
great movie
