Psycho III: An Underrated Slasher Sequel

- Psycho III came out three years after the surprise hit of part two, and with Anthony Perkins stepping in with his directorial debut, there were hopes of another hit. Unfortunately, it bombed, derailed Perkins from doing more entries, and became the lowest-grossing theatrical film of the Psycho series. But is it that bad? No. Not even close. In fact, I'm here to argue that besides being compared to the legendary original film, Psycho III is an amazing and underrated sequel.

Psycho 2 is a great sequel, but part 3 is alot of fun. Maureen was a better love interest, the killing in the phone booth was well shot, and Norman was great. Plus, the theme was catchy.
🎶 buh huh
buh hum huhuh
dumdum dum 🎶
I agree Maureen was definitely more believable as a love interest than Mary in Part 2...
*R.I.P. Anthony Perkins. A true brave actor. Hope he knew how much he was/is appreciated*
He may have died but his work will live as long as the human race.
Psycho is ageless.
And true cinephiles don’t care about age, some infact enjoy seeing a movie from a bygone era
THANK YOU! Someone actually gets it! I remember watching Psycho III and loving it! All my friends just couldn't get behind it. I was lucky enough to meet Anthony Perkins at a screening of Psycho IV and told him how much I loved Psycho III, not knowing he had directed it. He was incredibly gracious and signed my playbill. I still have that piece of paper, to this day and cherish it. The surrealism on display in Psycho III is just great!
Rest In Power, Anthony Perkins.
Give 'MOTHER ' our regards.
Lol
Thank you for making this video. It is so rare so find anyone online praising this movie. I've been in love with Psycho III for years, and it kinda hurt to find out it it so hated by critics and fans. Everybody says the same thing: "Psycho II was great, but III sucks". I congratulate you for having the balls to have 'unpopular opinions' on movies and loving what you love without letting others influence your taste.
This movie is so stylish and fun, and has a strange vibe I can't put my finger on but it's great.
Whilst I still prefer 2 over 3, I think 3 is a fantastic film still. Actually I'd rank the Psycho franchise as one of the best slasher series out there. Each movie actually offers something different, which is a rare these days. I enjoy Psycho 4 immensely too. Such a great series.
I love Psycho III, although I prefer part II. I always thought that the first three Psycho movies are a perfect trilogy. I think IV has its moments but it contradicts his backstory as we know it.
Yeah I'm not a fan of part 1V . I just pretend it doesn't exist.
I like Part 2 better than the third, but the third film is still a lot of fun. Perkins’ did a good job directing & Diana Scarwid and Jeff Fahey were great additions to the lore
I've always thought Psycho 2 was extremely underrated.
True! And they are all different: 1 is a thriller and 2 is a "who done it" and 3 is a "slasher".
Don’t forget the absolute masterclass in film combat that is Norman straight up throwing an ashtray at Duke’s head and then beating the crap out of him with his own guitar, to which Duke replies: “Watch the guitar…”
Completely agree with you on Fahey in this, Lance! That line he gives when he kicks the chick out the car is priceless and easily the best line in the movie. I really like this one because of the perfect balance of sleaze as well as the almost too cool for school level of perversity/sleaze that Fahey brings to the movie and then you also have Perkins delivering that on the edge of sanity charm that only he can bring to the movie. So between the two of them you have these very intriguing performances that's just so damn entertaining to watch because when you're not with one character you get the other and it's exactly what you want while you watch the movie. Then them together in a scene creates a very particular yet subtle dynamic that you don't want to see come to an end. I love it. lol I think Psycho 2 is great as well and I enjoy Psycho 4 even though it has a different style of storytelling to it by comparison. The whole franchise doesn't get enough credit, IMO. That may be because the first movie is regarded as such a classic in the genre so anything else after it is considered not worth the time. Regardless of the reason, I think all the sequels are definitely worth the watch and I appreciate each one for it's efforts. Thank you, Lance, for putting some much needed respect on the name of Psycho 3!
This was a time when actors still gave memorable solid performances in films, Fahey does it so well here that you wonder why and when did acting become a lost art... 🤔 Fahey on a break while filming his short-lived TV series The Marshal in 1995. czcams.com/video/iP9yVo65GFc/video.html
100% agree. This series was just apart of my upbringing and I enjoy all four. Though part 2 may be a better film I find myself more drawn to part 3 and all of it's weirdness. Thanks as always, dude! Means a lot
As a young kid, this was one of the first horror movies I saw behind my parents back. It was a only a few years later I went back to the first. This movie had all the grittiness of a broken down hotel that till this day when I drive past on road trips I think about Norman. To me this one was one of the best next to the first. Kudos and RIP to Mr. Perkins. He made a character that will always stand the test of time.
Spot on review! I’ve loved Psycho III since the 80s. The Original Psycho is my all time favorite Horror film. Psycho 2 is a great horror sequel but I think that Psycho III is even better. It’s so fantastically demented & yes very stylish. PS I still remember that sex scene! Psycho IV is great too!
R.I.P. Anthony Perkins
♥️🌹♥️🌹♥️
I always like to watch parts 2 and 3 back to back as it seamlessly flows one to the other and you forgot to mention to great score by Carter Burwell who adds an eerie suspense. The scenes that are still vivid with me are when the Sherrif eats the bloody ice cubes and then later as Norman is pulling the dead girl out of the ice box and you hear the sound of her arm breaking, just that subtlety of not showing the viewer but in your mind your picturing the bone snapping.
Gotta say I've found the Psycho series to be one of the most surprisingly consistent series ever. Part 2 is great, part III really solid and even part IV was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting it to be, albeit the weakest. I thoroughly enjoy part III and Jeff Fahey cracks me up in it. :D
Its been more than 25yrs since ive seen these movies
There was also a god awful TV movie that I believe had Jason Bateman in it....
@@lutherheggs451 i hope they make a Teen Wolf 3 with Jason Bateman now that hes more well known on tv. Lol
@@lutherheggs451 Ha I never seen it but remember the VHS and trailer back in the day :D
Yeah the “you coulda been coming instead of going” was the most memorable thing for me. Such a great line though I plan to use it under less aggressive circumstances.
Nice to know everyone noticed it.
Now let’s talk about Psycho 2!! It’s underrated
I enjoyed this sequel and my favorite is Psycho VI where the bizarre backstory of Norman's childhood is shown. Snaps to Olivia Hussey as Norma Bates.
There's a Psycho 6?
Just playing, don't kill me
I am a big fan of Psycho 3 as well. Great cinematography, black humor and great supporting actors. So underrated.
" BLOOD MOTHER , BLOOD ,
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE ?! "
I liked Psycho 2 most. A wonderful script, twists & acting & direction.
Walked into the cinema expecting a hamburger but got served steak instead. That rarely happens. 🎃
Norman Bates is back to normal. But Mother's off her rocker again!
Great director, great actor, and great movie
BRILLIANT FILM!!! Perkin's nailed every aspect and this should of been a huge hit. From score to cinematography to performances Psycho 3 delivers. THANK YOU fer making this vid man!!!!
" WE ALL GO A LITTLE MAD SOMETIMES"
I was very surprised how good Psycho 3 was. I think 2 was better...but Anthony Perkins is a legit director.
It’s too bad Perkins didn’t get more chances to direct before he passed away in ‘92
@@LucyLioness100 Awe...he died in '92? Was it AIDS?
07:30 *There is something so sad and haunting about how a moment of murder can transform into one of compassion and redemption*
Great sequel, great cast, great director! I have the box set of all 4 films and must say I love all of them equally
The sx scene stuck with me as well. The thing he does with the lamps and the feeling of that whole scene just feels so sleezy dirty
Gotta agree. Jeff Fahey with the lamps has always stuck with me.
Sort of a young Ron Jeremy in that scene...
Psycho 2 is my favorite. Love the "who did it" plot and all the twists and turns. I love part 3, as well, and always felt it was underrated.
Yeah, I love the story arc of the trilogy, this being the insane climax. Part 4 reminds me of bonus features or something when you really want to dose hard on a franchise. But Anthony Perkins always impressed the hell out of me both with his acting and giallo-esque directing style. Alot of "subverting of expectations" done well. Everyone seemed to be having alot of fun making this
We are we all go a little mad sometimes. Especially with the lack of Black Sheep videos.
This is an excellent sequel in my opinion. An I though I was the only person who loved Jeff Fahey. A grossly underused actor with his own awesome style. Remember, her was the dude that flew everybody off the island in the finally of Lost. Points for that.
This was a good movie! I havent seen it since the 80s
He's also good in The Lawnmower Man and Body Parts. Crazy movies. And don't forget the barbeque man in Planet Terror.
@@Emulous79 He did have his own TV series, "The Marshal", but I never watched that.
@@christiancampagna2229 It was good, sadly so far never released on DVD.
Did anybody ever see "Edge OF Sanity" where Perkins portrays Doctor Jekyll? It too is very underrated and has some pretty brutal kills. It's an 80's Slasher update to the Mister Hyde theme, like "The Phantom Of The Opera" got around that same time.
This is literally my favourite channel. I'm absolutely shocked it doesn't have more subscribers than it does. Keep up the great work!
Great video Lance, this movie is such an underrated gem, classic 80s slasher, Faheys performance always stuck with me, and the score/ soundtrack 👌
Great video! You've given such an insightful and impassioned review of this often misunderstood sequel. I feel like Psycho 2 and 3 are both great works and each accomplishes feats that the other doesn't, which makes this trilogy so special (I don't consider 4 an official sequel). Also, I never made the Blood Simple connection after all these years! I forgot if you mentioned this, but I see a big Giallo influence too, as well as a little After Hours, Crimes of Passion and Choose Me vibes/aesthetic.😀Love the channel!
Great video! thanks for sharing. I LOVE this flick and I'm glad to see here others do too.
Glad you enjoy it!
Anthony Perkins brought so much to the role of Norman. There is some sadness and tragedy to him. Despite the horrible things Norman has done and the madness of his existence, Norman himself just wants peace and quiet. He doesn't want trouble. He's not Michael or Jason. There's more to him than just grabbing a knife and stabbing people. There are layers to him. It makes him stand out from other horror villains.
Great video review. I enjoyed watching this. I saw Psycho III in the Summer of 1986 at a local bargain movie cinema and I enjoyed watching it. I agree that this sequel is severely underrated. It happens to be both well written and well acted. Plus, Perkins directing of this film is both solid and right on. Charles Edward Pogue, who also wrote the script for the 1986 remake of "The Fly" wrote a very good script and the production is right on.
However, though this was his feature film directorial debut, and sole feature film directorial job, he had prior experience as a director of stage productions while he was living in France during his self imposed exile there. He would also co-write the script to the 1973 film "The Last of Sheila". Before the "Psycho" sequels, he was in minor roles in several American films He continued to stay busy as an actor. He fled to France because he couldn't find any serious work as an actor in the USA as a result of him playing the protaganist/antagonist Norman Bates in the first "Psycho". That is truly sad as he was a very good actor who could play any type of role.
Thanks for uploading. I'm looking forward to more.
Psycho 3 is the best sequel? To each his own but obviously it's part 2 which is also the greatest sequel.
I've never seen the original psycho (only the remake) but I enjoyed 2-4. I rewatched 2 recently and loved it, but I haven't seen three and four in years, but I legitimately enjoyed them. I think I liked 3 the most. Tons of memorable scenes (the ice with blood, the bird stuffing, and especially the "stop laughing at me") and I love the shots.
Out of all the sequels, THIS was the one i remembered the most. Im glad there are folks out there that enjoyed this movie as much as i did
And she played CHRISTINA CRAWFORD IN MOMMIE DEAREST! OMFG
Man this was amazing the video you did Justice to this movie. I've always liked Jeff Fahey from Lawnmower Man Body Parts an I enjoyed him in Darkman 3 too. Anthony Perkins Legend R.I.P
Im at the library in Bridgeport watching this now.....right down the street from my apartment. Good times.
Garage keys. Fron Troom. That's how you know if someone is from the Southside or not (those that know, know). Great video as always. Glad to hear Matt Bailey, too
Psycho 3 is definitely under appreciated..its awesome!!..part 2 is of course one of the greatest sequels to a classic franchise of all time
See!? This is why I watch your stuff! Outstanding! By the way, Angel Dust still sounds new 30 years later. Cheers lads!
Great vid! Psycho 2 and 3 are both highly entertaining for different reasons. (And the 4th film is ok.)
I seem to recall James Rolfe calling Psycho 3 a truly bad film, & I couldn't disagree more! Psycho 3 kicks ass, & is one of my all time favorite slashers!! Duke is one of the best characters, in the Psycho films. LOVE every scene with him!! Also, Diana Scarwid gave an amazing performance, in my opinion, as well, & I thought she & Norman's romance was sweet, & hate that he ended up accidentally killing her. Also, the girl in that one scene with Duke & the lampshades is the same red haired girl from Friday the 13th part 5, that was laughing at the guy, with the stutter.
Dennis Franz sneezes portillos shakes
Damn right!
Didn’t realise Anthony Perkins was rocking a pair of Nike shoes, I want a pair just like them
I miss staring at the horror movie boxes at the video store as a kid.
Loved this movie
I remember watching it on HBO when it debuted on a Saturday night in 86/87 and having to turn away from the movie when Duke had the lamp shades covering his private parts LMAOOOO. This is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. I love how you broke this video down as well
Anthony Perkins has been one of my all-time favorites since I was a kid. So original and unique.
This is one I like to rewatch again and again. Such a fun, creepy movie. Wonderful performances, especially by the magnificent Perkins.
Perfect trilogy. Forget the last one.
I think they should make a film about making a film about psycho. But then people start to disappear
I like Psycho II but I'm not a fan of mother twist at the end. But I always loved Psycho III, its weirdness and its psychological horror. A real cult movie who deserves its title.
HA!... Love this flick!.... It used to be a cable movie channel staple of the 90's!.... Good TImes!
Great pick, Lance!!
Yesssss been waiting for this!
Gave Psycho 3 a re-watch after checking this video out yesterday. I didn't love it the first time i'd seen it several years back but you've given me a new appreciation for the film. Kudos
Thanks, man. That means a lot. Thank you!
Maureen looked like Lily Rabe from American Horror Story
All the sequels were under-rated. On a rainy day I'd suggest you'd watch all from 1 to 4 with plenty of popcorn!
I loved this movie almost as much as your videos. Absolutely amazin, You never dissapoint.
"Murdered a coworker" yeah its a little more than that, there's a reason they call each other Sister lol
Psycho 2 is one of the best sequels to any original film ever in my opinion.. but 3 was pretty good too😃
This is a hot take, but I love all the sequels😂😂😂😂
The Blood Simple influence is obvious, but PIII can also be described as a Mario Bava esque Giallo, which is great.
I understand your passion for this film but the key phrase is in your intro: the film holds a special place in your heart. Lots of bad movies matter to lots of people for X or Y reasons. This is no reason to lose all perspective on their quality. The sixth installment in the series of ''Friday The 13th'' is my favorite but I know very well that it is not a ''quality'' film. It's all a matter of taste, of course, but I think ''Psycho 3'' is a bad... cool... movie. It reminds me of all the bad but cool things about 80s B-horror movies. The acting is bad. The transitions between the scenes, which you like so much, are rather amateurish. The acting of Perkins (and the other actors) is caricatural and the camera shots have nothing equivalent with the second opus... which tried itself to pay homage to the originality of the first masterpiece. I believe, in my humble opinion of course, that the second film is more ''classic'' even if it also has its faults. The thing I liked the most about ''Psycho 3'', other than representing an era that I love, is its lighting, its poster (Norman holding the keys) and the theme music by Carter Burwell. I admit that the idea behind the scenario is good under the circumstances (Norman who falls in love with the suicidal nun and the fact that we no longer hide the fact that Norman imitates his mother even if we already knew it). But I will never go so far as to boast all the points that you have boasted. But I join you in your passion.
Anthony Perkins made this movie for laughs, and it is pretty intentionally funny. However, Psycho 2 is the best sequel.
I don't know, a lot had happened in movies in just three short years even Perkins had visually aged quite a bit.
I forgot they had three, so happy
Great video. I have always loved the Psycho film series. And you’re right; Jeff Fahey is fantastic!
He really is!
I need to give this one a rewatch. I remember it being sleazy. I also remember a lamp.
I love videos like this because it reminds me I’m not crazy for really enjoying this movie, I like Jaws 2 and More American Graffiti also.
Great movie. I agree Pyscho 3 is highly underated.
Loved this film as a kid. What is the song you’re playing at the end of the video? Seems so familiar but I can’t place it.
I enjoyed Psycho 3 more than i thought i would honestly. It was a lot of fun. Anthony Perkins did a great job directing.
Psycho III is a classic! Perkins agreed to reprise the role under the condition he got to direct. He didn't want the studio to use someone who didn't really get the material or hire some hack that would do something pointlessly stupid like a shot-for-shot remake of the original.
And I love how they cast Diana Scarwid as the love interest. She was best known as the daughter from Mommie Dearest, so she was as well-known as Perkins at time for playing a character with mommy issues.
I have seen this film once when I was very young.
My father had recorded it on VHS.
I do not remember much about the film.
This was a shock when I saw it because it was a good movie. Who expects a part 3 to be a good deal better than part 2.
I love this movie, it was the first movie of the series I saw way back in the 90s when I used to rent horror movies from the video store as a kid I obviously avoided the black and white one cuz I was an idiot but I love the first one now, but back then this was the one I watched over and over again. Still my favorite!
GREAT video.
Everyone in the comments getting butt hurt over someones opinion is ridiculous. Yes part 2 is great, everyone knows that. But this channel is talking about underrated. Part 2 was underrated in the 80's, its not anymore. People have been universally singing its praises for years now. Dig deeper friends, expand your schlocky minds.
Couldn't agree more - big shift in tone but on its own merit Psycho III is a great piece of fun, and shoed that Anthony Perkins had a great eye as a director. Shame he didn't get to do more.
Agreed. Psycho 3 hit at just the right time for me to enjoy fully. Fit in with the times, kept its’ heritage.
Great sequel
Never as cool as first two but damn some epic scenes are in here
Part 3 the best in the series ❤
Here's a nod to _Vertigo._ 4:05 ...and here we have *The Official Norman Bates Kill Kit* 9:17
Now I have Spoonman stuck in my head
I agree. All the Psycho movies are pretty good actually. (Except the 1998 remake).
I particularly like the way the film is the consequences of psycho 2 and Normans mental state sinfully underrated is this film
Anthony Perkins was Norman Bates.👍 Great actor.
A Bates-like 'psycho' character in the rare German film A Demon in My View (1991), Pino Donaggio's theme here. czcams.com/video/4UmhCe5B_kM/video.html
I hate that right after the mention of Tom Holland's name I instantly pictured the current Spiderman & not the Great (also more talented in my opinion)writer/director
The Anthony Perkins psycho movies I'll watch over the remake any day
Part 2 is a near perfect sequel that subverts some expectations nicely, third film is ok, thought 4th is stronger than the 3rd.
I really need to get these other 3 movie's I only have the first one
The music is tops too.
“Said the spider to the fly” is the quote I always remember from this movie for some reason lol. But duke was just so annoying in this movie. Norman killed him the way I would have. With his guitar. I prefer part 2. It was plain creepy. The music score was perfect. Part 3 was just a plain porn flick if you ask me lol. But one scene I absolutely loved was when he was walking up the staircase in mothers clothes and his face was pitch black. That was a great shot. Scary.
yes! this is About Norman's Deuling personality in his head :-)
The press Tony Perkins did for this film is what got me into the trilogy (quadrilogy).
i loved the 2nd one but 3 was insane but very delightful as a third entry to a horror franchise a lot of 3rd entries are rubbish this one on the hand caught me by surprise
