    I remember seeing this movie at my cousin's house, his dad rented it and we were allowed to watch it. Afterwards we decided to go play in a small forest close by his house like we always did as kids. It was a small paved road that lead to the forest with on both sides big cornfields. As we were half way we suddenly began to hear movement in the cornfield, it also began to become a little windy so there was also a slight breeze. As it was getting late we looked at each other, said NOPE and ran as fast as we could back to his house. I never ran so fast again in my entire life.

    Imagine you're a famous writer. You got people coming to you saying they want to make your stories into a movie. You agree but then they start cutting out or changing things. Perhaps King really doesn't understand cinema but I don't totally blame him for not being happy with the final product. I'm still glad though that his works get a chance.

    • @magnuskallas
      @magnuskallas Před rokem +3

      King's taste in visual media can be really weird. Including when he writes for screen/produces. I quite like this film but find the original story almost unbearable, especially the audiobook - the endless nagging! They did a good job.

    • @razzledazzle1462
      @razzledazzle1462 Před rokem +3

      The fact that he hated Kubrick's adaptation of the Shining and that he was happy with the TV version (which he incidentally adapted) kind of proves that. I'm not sure how much he's had to with the adaptations for the last 20 years or so but back in the golden age of King adaptations, I think it's fair to say.
      I do understand *why* he hates Kubrick's adaptation (reading the book, the autobiographical aspects of Jack are really obvious and Kubrick completely rewrote the character). It's just that the adaptation is wildly successful in its own terms. If you've never seen the TV version of the Shining, I'd recommend it simply to compare the two. It's wild.

    • @zmbdog
      @zmbdog Před rokem +2

      I don't think he gets cinema. Look at the TV miniseries of THE SHINING. zzzzzzzzzz
      One specific thing I've noticed is his displeasure with characters that are mean or grating in his stories being changed in film adaptions. He doesn't seem to get that while characters like that work in print, having to watch them on screen can become taxing or even insufferable, especially when they're your leads. Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN movies come to mind. The characters are such assholes you just get tired of putting up with them.

    • @magnuskallas
      @magnuskallas Před rokem +1

      @@zmbdog Weird you mentioned Rob Zombie... House of 1000 Corpses is one of my guilty pleasure films. Possibly better than the sum of its parts since yeah, all the characters are either scum or whiny. I see what you mean.

    As a Midwestern kid, I grew up with cornfields on three sides of my house, so naturally had to watch this. I was never freaked out by a corn field as I lived literally in them.... The neighbor who farmed our small one acre literally had corn within 40-50 feet of my bedroom window. Ironically when i got older I started dating another farmer's daughter and we eventually married. But she had never seen the movie and I introduced it to her when we first met. Now after being together for 22 years first dating, then engaged, and then married we still watch this on occasions together and are reminiscent to this movie watching it for the first time on my parent's 52 inch Zenith projection TV. Oh the memories.

    "He who walks behind the rows" of corn. I always used to think "behind the rose" meant behind the flower-the rose. And the guy who plays the main character, (Peter Horton) I always thought was the same guy who plays in other King movies and shows, the guy who did the Shining miniseries, Steven Weber. I love the movie Desperation, though. And Stanley Kubricks' The Shining is an all time classic, regardless of Stephen Kings opinion. "Outlander!"

      In The Stand novel, Randall Flagg has visions and memories of walking behind rows of corns with shouting children.
      Flagg is also implied to be a demon, Satan, or an anti christ of some sort and in The Dark Tower is revealed to be in service to the Crimson King and a wizard/demon of some variety.

I loved it so much I recorded the audio with my dads boombox. Just the scenes of the scenery minus the characters is just perfect in my opinion. Moviemakers knew back then that horror was a well shared love for us kids in the early 80's and they knew they had to write this to draw us in with characters like Sarah and Job. The opening scene in the diner peaks your interest early on. A young Linda Hamilton is still a pleasure to watch. Courtney Gains who plays Malachai does a pretty good job at making you believe he's a total nutjob, so much so, when I saw him in other movies, such as Can't Buy Me Love, I still could not see anyone but Malachai... lol I wouldn't recommend any of the sequels, but if someone hasn't had a chance to view the original, check it out, you might just like it.

    The movie is 40 years old!
    I remember first watching it back in 2008
    It was actually based on a short story by Stephen King first appearing in Penthouse magazine in 1977
    Crazy this was Linda Hamilton'a third feature pre-Terminator, she's stayed in interviews that even though she enjoyed making the film she still considered it one of her worst projects and hasn't looked back
    The kids are creepy as hell no doubt but Issac's character really steals every scene he's in, John Franklin oozes with such devilish energy being that he’s one of those actors that actually looks way older than he does given he has a growth hormone deficiency
    He's one of those villains you love to hate but relish in his slimy ness
    Courtney Gains is very good as Malachai being in a power struggle trying to teach the true word of this cult
    These child actors are really giving it their all even in the smallest of scenes, sure it’s over the top but a lot of fun
    Although structurally this is all over the place
    It's also got the typical Stephen King tropes from religious nuts to overacting to an unexplained psychic to the of course disappointing resolution
    I got my fair share of scares and chills
    The ending though was strange
    But this remains another one of my favorite Stephen King adaptations by Fritz Kiersch leading to 11 sequels but not as good as this one

    The story is a little more and deeper than that. The premise actually has a lot of sense if you can place into context.

    Great movie. Loved it back then, still love it, despite a completely unlikable male protagonist.

    Make a video about the Fox show Brimstone with our handsome main character from this movie. Maybe it'll be available to stream if we talk about it.

    Fun fact... corn and soybeans are very often planted in the same field in alternate years so the soybean plants can replenish the soil.
    So, in one year, Children Of The Corn are Children Of The Corn. Next year, they're... Children Of The Soybean... And so on and so forth.

    I liked the movie when I first saw and seeing it again later, it was still worth watching.
    However I still have the question of why the kids would be so bothered about the corn...
    Oh what will you grant us oh lord, should be sacrifice our adults.
    Corn, as tall as the tallest man.
    Corn? Anything else?
    No pretty much just the corn...
    Oh... Silence, footsteps, door closes....

    It has the juice (It has the juice)
    I can't imagine a more beautiful thing (Woo)
    It's corn
    I can tell you all about it
    I mean, look at this thing
    When I tried it with butter, everything changed

    @12:24 if it makes them feel any better King also didn't like Stanley Kubricks Shining adaptation and even made his own which wasn't as good.

    Honestly, this is one of the best King adaptations as far as I'm concerned. Good American folk horror, enough creep factor, and the kid actors were excellent. The glow-cloud is cheesy as hell, which really knocks the wind out of the finale, but the build up is great.

    If you saw this as a kid, it was THE most intense psychological thriller of all time. It really questioned the "adults" roll for children who lived in a world where questioning what you're supposed to do when you're grown up is chastised by the people you're supposed to look up to. First time as a child I questioned if adults knew what they were doing. As an old adult now... WE FUCKING DON'T KNOW JACK.
