- In this day and age, remakes are a dime a dozen and the reason for such is that original IP's are tougher and tougher to come by. Yet when this remake was released, the studio didn't see the advantages and if anything, proved as to why they should have probably chosen a different name entirely. So join us as we take a look at the absurdly underrated film from Paul Schrader, and starring Malcolm Mcdowell and John Larroquette - Cat People!

Hey guys!
This episode of BEST HORROR was made from suggestions from fans who emailed us demanding this show be covered on this series!
Thanks JoBlo for posting this !! I was waiting.
This creeped me the hell out when I was a kid for some reason. I haven't watched it sense because I know it will be less creepy. I want to keep that original impact. If that makes sense. lol
@@nasalpolecat091 You got it!
Can you do the others please would be appreciative keep up the good work by the way
Thanks Lance and team, for posting my movie review request. Really appreciate it and I hope this dreamlike/nightmarish movie gets some more attention from other Cult/Horror/Thriller fans through this way.
When I was a young man I was obsessed by Nastasia Kinski. I think she's one of the most naturally beautiful actresses of all time. When I was married several years later I ended up naming my daughter after her. She didn't do a lot of movies and possibly wasn't the greatest actress but it was extremely hard to take your eyes off of her. Plus it must have been weird as hell growing up under Klaus Kinski.
Yep. Absolutely beautiful!
To be fair, I don't think it's difficult to get obsessed with her beauty, hehe. She's always been beautiful, but back in the early 80s, when she was younger, she had this special look in her eyes that were both feral and magnetic. Incredibly attractive woman.
Hell, as an OLD man I'm obsessed with Nastasia Kinski.
Herzog Werner loved Klaus and still planned to kill him on a couple of occasions...
@@b.l.fisher8230 I've seen many things over the years that say that Klaus kinski was the worst person to work with in any film industry anywhere in the world. He always gave a good performance sometimes a great performance but it's called acting and you don't always have to be that intense to pull a character out. There are many methods that actors use to get to the final product but making everybody on set despise you is unnecessary. Method actors tend to get other people's skins but most of them have a line. Klaus kinski had no line.
That theme song really is great. Between that and Duran Duran’s song for “A View To a Kill,” the 80’s were pretty great for theme songs from movies that most people don’t care about.
yup
Cat People is awesome, and Tina Turner's cover of David Bowie's theme song is a 10/10 for rock n roll. This movie always fascinated me as a kid. Genuinely underrated.
I enjoyed the original, but I LOVE the '82 version! I saw it when first released, and was mesmerised by the atmosphere it created.
Agreed. The setting of New Orleans and its surroundings contribute in no small way to that.
This was one of the first VHS I’ve rented! I was just a kid and really liked this movie, the atmosphere was so unique… and Nastassja Kinski is so beautiful in this movie, like real beauty.
I don’t think I saw this movie ever again, but I vividly remember it.
I first saw the remake of Cat People when I was 14 years old and I think it's a brilliant but criminally underappreciated horror remake.
The soundtrack is top notch. LOVE this movie!
I personally like this movie a lot. It’s got Bowie on the soundtrack, Malcolm McDowell hamming it up and Nastassja Kinski in Her Birthday suit. Its the Ultimate Trifecta!!!!!!
Great video! I love both the original Cat People and the remake. I wish we got more interesting reimaginings like this and The Thing. It's sad that more of Universal's catalog didn't get this sort of treatment. What other cult classics did we miss out on because audiences didn't get this and The Thing when they were released.
the original is an all time great B classic. Cat People (1942) > Cat People (1982) but I do watch the remake every five or ten years, it's not perfect but it has some great 80's moments
I saw it as a kid. Never understood the low ratings for this movie. I loved it!
This movie was one that was on a good rotation on TV in Los Angeles I’m the 80s. I watched it several times. Kinski is a goddess. And Malcolm McDowell scared the shit out of me 🤣 I’ve wanting to see it again. I haven’t seen it since the 80s.
I can't tell you how many people I've asked if they've ever seen this movie and I have yet to hear someone say yes . It's kind of sad because it's pretty good ( definitely weird ) but still worth watching. It's been a long time since I've seen it , so forgot how many big stars were in it .
More people should add this one to the list of the greatest remakes ever. Definitely an underrated horror classic!
I agree!
Yeah, i also love that she turns into a black leopard, as I've always been interested in black panthers, particularly because of the sightings we have here in the U.S., especially here in Texas, where they are legendary.
I saw this movie when I was in middle school on tv having never seen the original and I loved it. Now that I have seen both of them I still love this version but I also really love the original.
My favorite movie!!! I was obsessed with this movie in junior high!!!
One strange movie - Nastasia moved like a cat - I did enjoy the film. I also liked the original "The Cat People" - not a lot gore but a load of suspense!!!!
I would love to see you guys tackle Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Suspiria. I know some people hate it but I find it very interesting.
Those people are, to put it kindly, mistaken. It's the best horror remake since "The Fly" and, unlike that heinous "Mother of Tears", actually does something interesting in further developing the Three Mothers mythology.
@@AngelofMusic04 I agree, to me personally it’s one of the best horror remakes since John Carpenters The Thing, and the reason I say some people hate it is because it’s an extremely divisive movie. To me it’s a fantastic movie with a slow burning yet complex narrative and characters you actually empathize with, which is something the original lacked. The original film is nothing more than a style over substance film, and although I appreciate that style, it lacks all the important qualities that makes a great horror film.
That Bowie song...
I saw Schrader's film when it was first released and loved it!
When I was younger the poster to this movie always creeped me out but when I got older I watched it & I have to admit it really was good & it’s definitely an under appreciated classic!
Roger Ebert gave it a positive review, calling it the best horror remake he had ever seen, while he named John Carpenter's THE THING the worst. WTF, Roger!?
Let the man rest in peace. He made a mistake. We're all human.
It was probably a first impression. First impressions are everything.
Ebert had a very long and complicated history with genre films, especially horror. It seemed like any scenes of intense and explicit violence, outside of prestige pictures, was a huge sticking point for him. And he wasn't even quite as bad as Gene Siskel. Which is fine, some critics are more adept at reviewing certain types of films over others. Horror just wasn't a genre that he vibed with, and he definitely missed the mark big time in several cases. That's why I usually only look at his reviews for horror to see what he really disliked, because chances are that I'll really like it. 😅 But, his criticism for drama, romance, classic, and even some comedy films still holds up very well and is very valid.
Such a beautiful film, I've seen it many times over the years and the imagery haunts me. I was excited when it came out as I loved the original and its sequel. Very different films, apples and oranges. Wonderful review, thank you for the content☀
I have always loved this movie. Glad to see that others appreciate it as much, plus the music is so great.
The only thing I knew about this movie before was the transformation into "cats," great review.
Haven't seen the original (yet), but I really liked the remake.
I really enjoyed the remake. Paul Schrader has such an eye for visuals, editing and soundtrack choices. His direction really elevates the film and makes it hypnotic. Nastassja Kinski is definitely the standout and she’s wonderfully alluring, moody and unsettling. Gotta give props to John Heard and Malcolm McDowell as well, their performances give so much flavor to an otherwise goofy storyline. It’s an entirely different beast from the original. Haha
By the way I really enjoy your channel's. I love the best horror movie you never saw, WTF happened to that horror movie, the black sheep and several other's. I look forward to continuing to watch your channel and to see what you will upload next.
Loved this movie, Natasia Kinski was very good and very sexy in it
Everytime I see this movie I know that I'm at the end going to feel the sadness yet one more time... the same feeling I had the first time I saw it some forty years ago.
I love both the original and this remake. They are both different but they are both also very good psychological horror films. They just reflect the differences of the time. 1982 has more visual effects, gore and sex. Original is more don't show the horror...let your mind think about it. I could go on forever about each one but I won't lol we'd be here all day...
Both films are good in their own way - although having seen "The Cat People" several times (the original) I always watch it - talk about suspense.
I've got the Shout Factory Blu-ray of Cat People. Nastassja Kinski is someone whose career never really took off. I thought she was good in this.
I love that you compared this to The Howling. It always felt like a complement to that film for me and I adore both.
Maybe not a big hit but definitely a cult favourite. Malcolm McDowell and Natasha Kinski made it a cult classic.
One of my all-time favorite films! ❤
I have liked this movie since it was released. I didn't see it at the cinema, but I loved Malcolm's and Moroder's work, so I knew I'd like it. I think I first saw it when it came out on cable.
I didn't know this movie existed. Thank you for covering it. I am definitely adding it to my list. Also, if being an actual cat lady that turned into a panther could be my super power, oh hell yes!!! I haven't seen the movie yet, so idk if there is a down side. In AAWIL transformation was really painful. Hopefully turning into a panther wouldn't be.
I love the old film haven’t seen the remake yet. The pool scene still haunts me to this day.
I adore this movie. It only gets better with age and viewings. It's one of my favorites, and Kinski is one of the most naturally gorgeous women to ever grace our genre m
My Dad was such a fan of this flick that after seeing it, he went and got a tattoo on his arm of the final freeze-frame shot of the Panther snarling.
it has a great soundtrack. 81 was a great year for soundtracks
Remember seeing this at the drive-in as a kid 6 or 7 and that arm rip scene really freaked me out.... great movie 🖖
I love the remake AND the soundtrack by disco master, "Giovanni Giorgio Moroder, an Italian composer and music producer". (Also RKO. The studio globe can still be seen on a corner of the Paramount studio in LA). Great cast and use of location shooting. Also, Kinski is PERFECT.
I still play David Bowie's song from time to time.
I was 18 years old when this film came out. The weird vibe was more typical of the late 70's early 80's. I really loved this film.
This is one if my favourite films , the director knew what he was doing, it had to be Natasha Kinski, it had to be in new Orleans
Both the original and the remake of at people were great movies!
I'm going to see this tonight on the big screen at the Alamo Drafthouse. I'm going to enjoy it so much more now. Thank you!
That David Bowie song, wow! 🎵
Oh look, another short haired young actress I've fallen for as a kid. Bet I wasn't the only one. 💘
All i remember about this film is Natasha Kinski. My GAWD, she was something else... 🤤
I had to special order it FOR VHS! Now own the HD remaster...
Excellent analysis! Way to go man. Keep it up!
Much appreciated!
I think I need to re-see this movie...
Love this movie never had a crush harder than on this movies leading lady
I still have a thing for short haired brunettes.
The David Bowie song is great
I remember back then over here in Europe this movie was pretty big!
I did liked it very much 👍
I checked this movie out about 18 years ago when I was on a Malcolm McDowell binge :D
Very clever and smart using a mountain lion charcoaled vs an actual leopard (in human interactions).....which flips like a switch and reacts without warning. Cougars are so smart and very very easy to train.
I loved this movie years ago! Glad you recommended it!
Cat People and The Hunger. Visually erotic films!
I loved this movie including the theme song
I always loved that movie. Malcolm McDowell and Nastassja Kinski play well off each other. McDowell always giving oh so creepy persona, while Kinski gives innocence, erotic vibes but also demonstrating how dangerous she can be, especially towards Alice. The story is extremely compelling and sad when you think about it. It is as enthralling as it is sometimes an uncomfortable and disgusting watch. The music by Giorgio Moroder and David Bowie also adds up to this enigmatic watch! I think it would have had a better success if the movie came out later like the 2010s. The mixes of the genres, especially horror with anything else wasn't well received in the 80s.
i dig the short shorts and wadders in the fishing scene peak fashion.
9:37 That is the most Hollywood thing I've ever heard lol
You guys should do WTF happened to John Larroquette. Also, just a tip, you should remove the big breathes on your audio recordings. It's fairly easy to do with Audacity, Premiere or similar.
Excellent video, excellent film.
Ive seen both and liked them but i love B movies...lol
I love this movie.
I honestly think this is one of Schrader's best films; prefer it over First Reformed anyway. While still keeping the spirituality of most of his work, it focuses more on character and story, making for a very entertaining remake.
Paul Schrader is an Oscar nominated filmmaker who now lives in New York City with his wife, Mary Beth Hurt and their children since 1983.
The real life couple were getting along very well since June of 1982. After "Cat People," Paul Schrader wants to focused more on both writing
and directing on his own projects, such as his Oscar nominated script, "First Reformed." He's moving fast forward and never looks back.
Good review. One of my favorite off beat films.
I remember being mesmerised watching this movie. I was too young to understand the sexual connotations. This movie and The Towering Inferno are unforgettable really.
From the creators of the 1980 hit film "American Gigolo" comes "Cat People." Remake of the 1942 original and released in the spring
of 1982 by Universal Studios. Near by the end of the late 1970's, Universal-International was able to gain access to the library of titles
that had been made by StudioCanal (which includes EMI, AFD, RKO, Brooksfilms etc) decades earlier. Plans were set in motion they
were going to release a series of remakes including RKO Classics. These plans were led to them bringing the world updated versions
of two RKO horror adaptations in 1982 unfortunately both of these remakes were box office disappointments. Their studio killed the
whole idea. But RKO continues to do more projects such as Plenty, Hamburger Hill, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt and more.
So many of these movies make me reminisce the video store experience! like this one and seeing the cute girl with the bright green eye
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😁
Looks like an interesting movie ! xx
I was the 1st student to borrow the novelization of this flick from my grade 10 English class. It was basically PR0N writing! Score for the pre-internet days!
I didn't say anything when I returned it...
I was about 11or 12 when my parents took us to the Sunset Drive In for a horror double feature. In their '67 Kombi Sundial Conversion We were supposed to sleep in the back, but I surreptitiouslxy watched American Werewolf in London which was totally boring, and Cat People which was oddly fascinating, incipient puberty?
I wonder of the cats died from the toxic dye just like the one from The Beast Master.
The music is by far the best thing about this film. It's a shame that Schrader was irresponsible in his decision to use a real panther in the hotel scene and sonically abuse it into "acting". The animal died from head injuries after leaping into the walls to avoid the noise.
I was a teenager when this came out. I think I liked the movie at the time, but what is really making me nostalgic is the cut of women’s clothing. Striped boatneck with a pencil skirt and ballerina flats? Yes please.
Universal’s plan to remake classic movies flamed out early? What is this, some kind of…dark universe?
I was in this movie when I was 10 years old.
Yep, never saw this one!
I always mix this up with sleepwalkers
I never considered John Heard as someone with sex appeal but damn...I get all fuzzy when I see him in that film.
If wasn’t for remake, no David Bowie.
This film creeps me out. Kinski's sister accused their lunatic father Klaus of incestual rape and this film is about incest. I mean, that's no coincidence. Just saying. Just sane. Hooray. Celebrate!
Great video! But, Sydney...Po-lack? Yikes
Sydney Pollack didn't helm "Cat People," it was Paul Schrader. Damn!
Apparently the rumor that the cats were dyed black was a lie. I can't remember where I read it though.
I remember seeing this as a kid and pretending i was a "cat people" 😅😂 Now i have 18 cats and am a "cat lady" 😂😂
However, even then, at like 8, I was able to pick out a cougar. They are my favorite big/small cat. ❤
I think Nastassja qualifies as a Cougar by now.
O'toole for me
I've watched it just for the swimming pool scene. Always had a thing for Annette O'Toole.
Want to get an Irina
Questions: 1. Why does the lady say to Irena:"My sister?" I always thought mabey the lady herself is a werecat, and she sensed that Irena is one also? Hence: "My sister?" 2. Is Paul really Irena's brother? The film leaves that question up in the air. 3. That one zookeeper must be a complete moron! 4. PLOTHOLE: Oliver tells Irene that she's the first girl he ever romanced and that he's a very lonely man, yet in the scenes before he meets Irene its strongly hinted that he and Alice are romantic. And right after he loses Irene he's shown being romantic with Alice again! Uh.......what??? So 1. Was Oliver in like some kind of casual romance with Alice but he was never that serious about her? 2. Was Oliver lying to Irene about never having a girlfriend? 5. Irene and Alice seem to become quite good friends early on, yet why later does Irene decide to stalk Alice and treat her like an enemy? Is this because she's jealous of Alice's obvious romantic feelings for John Heard and wants her out of the way? Irene complains about Paul's psychopathic behaviour then later decides to behave the same way?
I certainly disagree with McDowell's assessment of the original, although he is quite good in this, as always.
Once you know the panthers are cougers dyed black you really notice the slimmer physique and smaller cranial structure. The result is a distinctly feminine looking cat, a truly elegant creature...
Cat people run...run like the wind
Cat people screw ..screw like the wind and rain
Even old moldy Noah
Didn't wanna let em in...cat people
W w win ALRIGHT!!
The original may have been a B-movie cheapo that exceeded its expectations (hugely) but it had something a geometric progression of budget couldn't manage; the story actually MOVED. This movie was like a muscle car running on a bad tank of gas. It would burst forward then stall. Too much of the film was watching someone trying to crank over the starter, again and again.
The original Cat People films are far superior, if the sequel isnt really horror, but more fantasy.
Nothing missed here.
Did you really call Sydney Pollack: Sydney Po-LLACK ? ? ....Oof 🤦🏼♀️
