So I can see why Mrs. Levinson would give them the stink-eye and mistrust their motives. Tom, maybe it's more of the same? "Oh, here comes another random gold-digger to take more of my dead husband's money though my dear granddaughter!" What I find very well seen here is Mrs Levinson's vulgarity and lack of tact, which corresponds exactly to what also horrified the French aristocracy of the time about the Americans. In his memoirs, the Marquis de Castellane, who had married Anna Gould (the heiress of the American railroad magnat Jay Gould), describes his in-laws behaving exactly like Mrs Levinson here, talking about money all the time, making tasteless remarks, insisting heavily on subjects to be avoided, dressing in shoddy luxury, etc.

Remember, the family was just becoming aware of what a gem Matthew was, and how lucky they were to get him as an heir, businessman, and excellent husband for Mary. Mrs. Levinson didn't know any of this yet. And yes, Shirley MacLaine hits all the right notes in her performance.
