“She’s leaving, to get married. How can she be so selfish.” 🤣🤣 gotta love the Dowager
A lot of higher ranked servants which a lady's maid would be one never married for instance least in the beginning Carson, Mrs Hughes and most likely Mrs patmore were all unmarried
@@mistybethune9116yes, because they dedicated their whole lives to the family they served. It's harder to be a lady's maid and cater to her every need (from dressing and undressing her 4 times a day, doing her hair and makeup, organising her closet, being her shadow, basically) if you have 3 kids and a husband to take care of. But many young women preferred to live in a big mansion and travel around with their ladies, eating good food, learning everything there is to know about high society and even meeting a good match, than to risk a life of poverty with some alcoholic abusive husband. Being a maid to some rich chick was all the rage back then, when women had so limited options to earn money.
And between life in poverty or comfortable celibacy, many women chose the latter.
My favourite show, have binged it many a time on repeat.
I can quote the script better than Julian Fellowes himself.
Me too 🎉
You guys should check out Upstairs Downstairs. There’s an old version it’s amazing! Also, The Duchess of Duke Street I think both are EXCELLENT
@@cfrygirl I loved those series as a child also Lilly Langtry. I haven't seen them since so not sure if they stood the test of time. Also another one was Edward and Mrs Simpson.
@@cfrygirl……loved ‘D of D S’. Compulsory viewing!
"The key is in the planning." Quite right, Mrs. Hughes. Quite right indeed.
I can watch this over and over again. I never tire of it.
I have watched this show over and over and over and I still love it!! It's my go to show when I can't find anything else to watch.
I find it therapeutic
ME TOO!!!!!!
Me too love
Me too. Never ever get tired of it.
I love how violet can give a wonderful compliment to then be followed by a nasty insult 😂😂
She's not called the Queen of the Quips for nothing. 😊
Violet is the best!
Have lost count on how many times my mom and I have binge watched this
Me too! It’s at least 5 I’m sure but the number could potentially be higher!
@@kristashafer93098 we watched it when it was on Netflix last year - binge watched it at least 8 times and my sister got us the complete DVD set and have watched it a few times since - plus we have both movies - it's my major comfort show
My 92 year old grandmother love it too!
15:00-15:30 "Her kindness changed me life."
Thank Goodness For BRITBOX. Our American Connection To The Show
Such a feel good factor in this despite times being hard for most back then.
Yes, when I watch Season 3. I have to FF thru the Death Scenes... Still too painful a Decade Later.
For more years in southern California's Orange County I continued my Netflix dvd account active to view and renewed my selection of Downton Abbey series. Now I live abroad for too many years and continue to view and recount. Thank you Mr. Fellows for much relaxed and refined entertainment!
Some of the MOST beautiful and loving scenes from Downton Abbey.
Julian fellows thank-you for Downton abby we loved it so much and also thankyou for making the gilded age on sky loved it again
❤😊
Amazing how the servants were prepared to pull rank on each other and do each other down in a way much worse than the ruling class treated them
Almost like it was wrote by a guy who holds disdain for the so called lower classes 🤔🤔
No surprise.
One of the best TV series EVER!
I absolutely adore this show! I have binge watched it many times. Everything about it is perfection including the music 🎶 ❤
I started Binge watching this recently because I loved both the movie and it’s sequel. Despite living in the United States, I’m a huge fan of British culture and not to mention that as a child Thomas the Tank Engine was my was of escapism whereas Downton Abbey captures that same spirit but joining that well into my adulthood and making new memories with loved ones still here as well as with new friends. The world can be a wonderful place. You just have to find it in the right places. Those right places? Take my advice, they are wherever you say they are.
When Mr Bates tried to move out of range of the hair dryer...🤣
I still LOVE the show... wish it was on longer !!!!!
Maybe another movie? Or follow on series with the next generation?
We all do!
@@heleng9940 I would love to see a prequel.
"And we thought the assassination of an Archduke was a surprise."
I had to buy the whole dvd set then I can watch it over and over took my hubby to see Christmas at Downton film at the cinema ❤
Is it just me, or is it hard to watch scenes with Lady Sybill knowing what comes to pass in Season 3.
It’s hard for me too. She’s good and a pure character. Rewatching her scenes where she’s her happy self is hard knowing how it ends.
@@lovethatformeSeeing Lady Sybill happy and giddy when she brokers the news to Gwen is bitter sweet, especially thinking of when Gwen returns to Downton Abbey in Season 6.
It was a beautiful tribute to Sybil when Gwen returns.
It's fun knowing that the actress who played Gwen (a housekeeper-turned-secretary-turned-respectable wife) is the only one in the entire cast to be an actual Lady.
@@anitagootee8474 IKR! The same for the actress who played Lady Susan in Sandition is a Lady herself.
Have watched all seasons six times. Planning a 7th in January with a dress up party!
That will be so much fun! A great idea.
Oh! Sounds so fun🎉

What A Wonderful Chance To Reminisce With The Best Fans In The World... Thanks For The Posting.
Lady Mary is so evil forcing that man who wanted to marry Edith to go away
She was but unwittingly did Edith a favour. Ended up marrying a marquis and reached a social status Mary could never reach. On top of that Edith found true love. Mary sadly lost her true love and was left with the most difficult role of her life--to ultimately oversee the decline of Downton Abbey.
@@patbiggam8138which season did she marry the marquis?
"that man who wanted to marry Edith" didn't want to marry her at all. He tried to stop her coming to his house, but she persisted. They then proceeded with the marriage he really didn't want and he abandoned her at the altar.
@@heythave It was the finale of the final episode.
I love the women’s fashion during that time period. I think of my grandmother who lived during this time.
Ironing the newspapers....just, WOW.
My grandmother had maids. The newspaper was always ironed. Otherwise the ink came off and blackened your hands.
It's done so the ink would not come off and give you black fingers. The ink and paper was different back in those days.
My Text Message Notification is ** OH GOODY GOODY **. LOL
I really enjoyed Downton Abbey, but you begin to care about the characters and then some awful things happen to them and that's difficult to watch.
The writing and the performances are just so brilliant.
This series was one of my life long favorites. I’ve watched straight through twice. I’ll watch it many more times again.
Not much has changed with class distinctions, has it?
I'll take the upstairs routine, unless I'm Anna 🤣
Beautiful memorias I wish there was more...
"Why Granny, you're a romantic."

I miss this show 😢
So love this show! More please!
The architecture of these “homes” are beyond me, yet I am fascinated. People that lived like this were only in stories and fairy tales. I believe we are enriched for seeing how all of the classes lived. Sorry that they didn’t help one another, but stirred the pot trying to get one another in trouble. Some things class can’t contain.
It’s a romanticism of the times. Written by a toff.
some people still live in homes like this lol
Ah………The decadence of colonial loot
Industrial revolution arrived with ts own misery and freedom end of an era.
it happens in close society.people are bored with each other but have no other outlet.
Yep. Best binge ever
Love this show !!
A pesar de no estar traducida al español en CZcams. Soy de Chile 🇨🇱👏🇨🇱👏 y la veo siempre una y otra vez. FELICITACIONES, es una historia hermosa.
Love this show.
Interesting video title, I remember watching Upstairs, Downstairs back in the 1970's a TV series about this very subject. Also the Forsyte saga before that in 1967.
I guess it's time to start rewatching ...... LOL. So good. And to think I had no interest when it first came out!!
Same here! I thought it sounded boring as all get out. And then a friend told my stepmom that she would like Downton. We rented the first DVD of series 1 and Mom asked me to watch it with her. I told myself I would give it 15 minutes before saying I hated it and make a graceful exit. 5 minutes in I was really enjoying it. 15 minutes in, I realized I was hooked! I now own the whole series and the first movie. How awesome is Dame Maggie Smith?!! What an actress!!!
It took me years to finally see it. I don’t know why.
Thank you for sharing a great show.😊
The Music!!!!
I’ve never seen one full episode. I got the entire series coming in soon. I watched both movies and I fell in love.
Every one Brillant acting
I've loved a lot of t v programs But this one touched my heart

Could you imagine Sir George's spitfire landing on the East lawn with his wingman John Jr.
"Just stopping in to see their Folks"
Why would he be Sir George?
@@davido9080probably because he's the heir of the title even if young to be referred as sir.
@@rafaelyaguaro2842 He wouldn't be a Sir, you have to be knighted by the Monarch for that. He would be lord, like his father was.

"What Is A Weekend" ❓
I once had the 1st 6 seasons on dvd, lost in a turbulent time, then the few free episodes I could stream were removed, so 20 min is nice, Titanic is a soft spot for me...❤
Hi ever one l still loue it ❤🙋🏼♀️
6:15 That's Not the Drawing room, it's the Library.
I thought the same!
@@TownsyThe next scene to follow is in the Drawing room. The library is where the family gathers for tea and writing letters. The Drawing room is for before and after dinner. Think of it as a modern day living room or parlor.
Boxset love it birthday present to self at Xmas lovely jubbly!
Treat everyone as if you are Carson or Ms. Hugh's, and hold your dignity like the Earl and Dutches of Grantham.
Mr Carson was positively cruel at times, xo i will be a Mrs Hughes.
An earls wife is a Countess not a Duchess

it's horrible that the last episodes of the first season are not to find in Holland anymore....😢
😍 💯👏🏻
Cousin Isabel, what's Granny done now?
No electric in the kitchen??..no wonder poor Mrs Patmore went Blind!😂

Life was so nice back then what with grand houses and servants.
As long as you were rich. Not so good for the lower classes.
Yeah, but someone had to *BE* the servants
I never realized that the wild girl from The Game of Thrones was on here that was her that made
Yes the actress Rose Leslie who was probably the most upper class member of the cast her father is a Scottish clan chieftain
Mary was such a bore. Always miserable , mean and a bully. I thought Edith was the better sister.
Downstairs and upstairs? Some live in luxurious bunkers.
Coloca legenda 😢português por favor
Assassination of which archduke does she mean? Franz Ferdinand in Sarajewo? But it happend 2 years after the Titanik sank.
The 1st series went from 1912 to 1914, the 2nd from 1916 to 1919

Ola familia! 👒👑🎩
Live in care' giver is a recent' days equivelant of the servant of old. Housekeepers fair a little better because the salary is often so much higher and they get at least one day off per week. Food for thought.
Free state under colour awaited
Carson is the most devious evil snob in the house.
Snob yes not sure about evil
Blue 🔵
The servants had much more interesting lives, in my opinion.

Ironing the paper?
Yes that was really done so that the reader would not get ink on their fingers
I started watching… but didn’t see the point. Jumping from the first episode and the titanic sinking to Williams mother already dead and that episode. What’s the point?
Times were so much simpler back then, and so civilized. Simple pleasures without the vulgarity.
British "étiquette".... I'm not sure this was much simpler then.... Women were minor and social worker class was under wealthy one rules....
I wouldn't idolize this time period. For the people doing this type of servants work this is the most they could ever look forward too in life.
I prefer the working conditions and medical care of the present thanks 👀
The social order here
How many glasses or China cups were dropped or broken during the filming or accidents of the crew during the filming
Unknown
Fine if you live upstairs. Not so nice if you live down stairs. Although they were treated OK. At least society had rules & I liked the structure
Not every house was as nice as this one
Enid
Isn't he in titanic?
Is that set based on reality or is it only biased on which level where the alleged lower class in a building was successful in being able to stay safe?
Much of it was filmed inside Highclere Castle or based on its interior. The downstairs areas were all studio based
The servant hall in Highclere was changed from what it was appearance -wise in 1900-1930 .
Julian Fellows had said that in interviews.
