Leaving all the drama aside, the dress chosen was insanely beautiful
It seriously was! Absolutely stunning 😍
My favorite downton wedding gown
Indeed
Mine too. Absolutely gorgeous.
Controversial take perhaps because Mary was meant to be the style icon, but I always thought Edith wore the best outfits.
I can’t believe people are defending him. He publicly humiliated her by waiting till the last minute to do this.
And as the daughter of a rich earl it’s all the more humiliating for her
At this age he must be suffering from 6.30 syndrome therefore he can't take her.
He definitely shouldn't have waited until the ceremony was starting, but I sort of think he thought it was a reasonably good match until Robert talked to him the night before. Robert didn't make it easy for him, and wouldn't have no matter what he'd decided.
He was in the house of God and a young beautiful girl was placed in front of him. He felt unworthy.
The reality of having to make her happy for the rest of his short life made him feel guilty. He already felt guilty of the thought of her having to care for him at an early age when he got older and she talked him into marriage. Remember he already didn’t think he was worthy of her. Deep down he wanted to have her in his life forever. He wanted to make her happy but he was really a true gentleman for giving her up. He didn’t want her to see him get old and have her care for him.
@@mamabear5478 I get that. ( But) he didn’t have to humiliate her in front of everyone like that. But I did know that he had tried to warn Edith to find someone else (earlier on)
That coward could have broken it off ahead of time. Even an hour before. Few things are more humiliating that standing at the altar in all of your finery, in front of a hundred people and your preacher, and being dumped that way. It's absolutely gut wrenching.
As the daughter of a rich society man, it’s all the more humiliating ( no one at that time would probably care if a dirt poor farmer’s daughter got jilted at the altar vs a rich earls daughter)
@@LucyLovettLestrange it was even more humiliating if you were a man in that time and son of a rich man. You know, because his "manhood" would be tarnished as well as his own ego as an "alpha male".
If Edith were a man and jiltered at the altar, that would've been a huge scandal and I bet Lord Grantham would be have made sure to make the bride an outcast and ruin her life
Edith just wanted to be loved, she was begging for crumbs, always felt, rightfully so, forgotten.
Yeah, and not once, several times.
She pursued Patrick when he was Mary's suitor
With Matthew at first she pursued him to "steal" him from Mary
With Strallan was the same with Matthew
When she found a man who loved her capable of changing his citizenship in order to divorce and properly marry Edith he died in a gruesome way
And at last, Mary ruined her last chance to be happy until she tried to fix the damage
Sometimes I wish I were a rich earl’s daughter so I could storm up a magnificent staircase heartbroken instead of crying on my cheap couch
me too!!!! if only!!!!😂
That's one thing to wish for i guess 😂
Good one!!!🤣😂😆
Hehehehe, stay classy! Your comment really made me chortle.🤣💝
Haha yes
He could have said all that the day before the wedding to save face.
Right?? LOL
Indeed
It was an enormous bitchy move from him to do so
I was devastated for Edith in my first viewing of this series. But when you see her future husband and all he offers her-money and rank-her humiliation is nothing but a distant memory. She gets such a wonderful deal later-and outranks her own father!!
Yes, as devastating it was, it was better for her in the long run. She managed to become an independant, creative woman, no longer naive girl craving love and looking for it in the wrong places. She later fell truly in love twice, as a more reasurred woman.
Its so sad how Sybil never got to attend Edith's real wedding where she wasn't jilted.
Sybil didn’t have to. She could see Edith marrying someone from the afterlife because she’s watching over her
That's life
Indeed😢
The saddest part in the show Sybil’s death💔😭
Sybil was my favourite character.
And I'm sure she would have supported Edith with Marigold
Cora comforting Edith never fails to make me cry. She just wanted to make sense of Edith's pain to make her feel better. But nothing in that moment would've helped. But Edith's strength shines as she was able to get up and go down to breakfast the very next day. Still hurting of course but she did better than I would have.
Yes. The actress did a great job portraying a proper English woman who was left at the altar.
It's one of the few times she actually helps Edith in any way
Even though Edith and Mary constantly fought, did any of you notice how she was the first to follow Edith up the stairs? Even she was sad for Edith that day
Just like she said before they went in to the church
Probably the only time
Mary wasn't jealous of their relationship at this point. Now compare to how selfish and cruel she was to Edith when she realized Edith was about to marry a Marquis making her status higher than Mary's... She wasn't so generous then. Edith Marrying Sir Anthony wasn't a threat to Mary's status or reputation.
Sybil was quite pregnant at the time!
It sucks that this wedding turned out so bad cause this was actually my fav wedding dress/look of the entire series
LOVED this dress! The embroidery on the satin train is absolutely stunning. So glad I found this video so I can save it.
That emerald green evening dress that she ( Edith) wore in episode 1 of season four was my favorite that she wore. ( I know that it’s not a wedding dress, it it was a stunning evening dress that she wore)
@@LucyLovettLestrangeSo do I. The high split in that dress is 🔥🔥. Lady Edith's character and style arc throughout the series is beyond epic and glamorous.
As sad as this turns out for Edith. I do like what the sisters are doing in the background of it all. Mary helping her with her with her dress in the beginning. To the moment they get inside the house and Mary and Sibble dash up the stairs after her. I know she sends them away, but I love the fact they were there.
And once again Granny put everything at its place 😂
She’s the best character she’s badass
Such a wise and understanding person
Edith is my least favorite character in Downton Abbey, but she did NOT deserve to be humiliated this way. 👎
How do we want to go back to the time this was first played? Matthew there, Sybil there, the whole world in tact without a war..... only feeling sorry for our ancestors suffering. We had it good and we didn't know how good we had it. Now here we are, after pandemic and two wars raging on. Watching this clip and missing Downton Abbey days.
Nailed it!!
This just sounds like you lived in a bubble before the pandemic forced you to open them.
"If the poor don't want it you can bring it over to me." Why on earth would you edit that out?!?
😂😂😂😂😂
Poor, poor Edith. I died for her when this happened. She just can't catch a break.
You appear to have recovered from your demise in splendid fashion. 😁
Thank you Lady Grantham. LOL...in a tense moment that was a small bit of humor.
I hate that they wrote this for Sir Anthony because I liked the character so much. He was as boring as the color beige, but he and Edith were well suited. He was such a no for Edith, but he was the first one they wanted to pass off Mary to after the word got out about Pamuk.
Poor Edith. I wanna hug her.
I know he broke one of the daughters hearts but I will stan Sir Anthony forever. I wished they would have made up after the fact. He was right all along and he didn't want to disappoint Edith. in the end he just couldn't let her do it. He was wrong for letting it get that far but he got to the right answer in the end.
"*stan"?
They did not have to do it that way. He could have had a stroke, that would have proved Violet's point. she could have still fallen for Gregson. both trapped in marriages where their mate was ill and a marriage in name only.
@@peachygal4153 Wait...what? Are you saying Edith should have married Sir Anthony, who would have then become more disabled, and also started an affair with Michael Gregson? Why would anyone want that?
@@l.a.3479
“Stan” is slang for being a highly enthusiastic and supportive fan of someone or something.
The term originated from the eponymous Eminem song, in which the meaning was a portmanteau of “stalker” and “fan”.
It was originally somewhat derogatory, denoting overzealous obsession. It has evolved to describe ardent fandom, and can be used as a noun or a verb.
Thanks @@lim4275
The thing about life experience is you don't know it's for the best until one is further down the road.
Oh Edith. Poor girl couldn't catch a break then.😥😥 Of all times he could've done this he chose right as they were about to get married?? WTF man!!! And how much you wanna bet he lived a long life, married another girl and had a family with her??
😢😢😢😢this was such a terrible sadness.
Did any of you see the angry look that Carson shot him?
Yes i did.
Yes and mrs Huges
@@Queen_SpringsteenYou’re right! Mrs. Hughes shot him a pretty dark and angry look
Oh Edith. I know she’s such a brat up to this point but she didn’t deserve to be left at the altar. Oh well, in the end Bernie is such a green flag, all her troubles before are made up for
Not really, she was settling for Sir Anthony because she wanted to be married, so he was no real loss, but she loved Gregson. That was horrible, his murder. I don't think she loved Bertie like she did Gregson. Yes, she loved him, but it did not make up for anything. Edith would have been happier with Gregson running the magazine. She never cared about a fancy title. She only wanted someone to love that did not prefer Mary to her. Mary wanted the title.
Set a watch by the Dowager, she'll step in and regulate like clockwork.
And count on Cora to rally for her babies.
Edith’s dress is beautiful
Season 3 of Downton Abbey was where certain things happened to all 3 girls, Mary got married ( and wound up getting widowed )and Edith got jilted and ( sadly) Sybil died.
Oh god 😳...
@@user-ec3rm9wr1nWas something I realized. Season 3 was a bit of a game changer
We'll be..."terribly, terribly happy." 🤔
He did not deserve her! I’m glad she got her HEA!❤❤
Violet secretly arranged to have Matthew drive the car taking Sir Anthony away from the church after he jilted Edith. No love lost there.
I love this downton so so much!!!
At the altar, not cool!
I agree. Its a vile thing to do whether you are the groom or the bride.
Indeed
He could have said something earlier
Man. Even Mary was happy and being kind to Edith. So sad :(
I’ll happily take the cake if no one else wants it 😊
It's fruitcake with star anise fondant. You can have mine
“Look at them, both with their husbands, Sybil preGnant, MARY PROBABLY PREGNANT.”
Always makes me laugh. Poor Edith.
J'ai pleuré pour Edith ....
I don't care if it *is* just a tv show. This is killing me! 😭
All of us married all of us happy
That didn’t last for long😢
That was the last photo ever taken of the three sisters together.😢
Edith's love journey had so many shades. They were not just men in and out... But her character changes due to those romances
People please be respectful to the channel, it is run by humans and humans make mistakes
I have never seen this show. This scene just showed up in my feed. First-time reaction: costumes 10/10.
I love costume shows😂
The stories are not always perfect but it's a VERY good show. We were all wrapped up in it.
Totally worth your time! I’ve watched every episode at least 3 times. 😊😊😊
04:29 she needs a hug and a cup of tea
Or something stronger then tea
"Or a difficult one to repeat."
And you couldn't have said this the night before so it wouldn't happen in front of a lot of people
If it had hotten to the altar i would rather have faked a stroke than to pour out all that drama in front of everyone.
Granny knows what's what.
“Mary probably pregnant” LOL
I always thought this would happen to me......but then I got married and alot worse happened! Watch what you wish for you just might get it! And then alot of other bad things happened and the list just goes on and on! And I still don't what I've done to deserve it!😢
What was the song played as she walked up the aisle?
It’s a lovely dress. I’m sure she’ll find it useful for parties.
I doubt she would want to wear it again.
@@l.a.3479The one she wore in the series finale was Far superior and for her style arc to perfection.
😂I saw what you did there! 😅
Perhaps you have insight into a question I've never had answered. In her wedding to Matthew, why is Mary's dress so plain? It's even more plain than her everyday, non-dressup clothing, IMO. It looks almost like a nightgown to me. @@m.layfette6249
You really use a wedding dress to parties?
Love CZcams. I never watched this show but now I get to watch her get her happy ending next.
I can’t believe the official Downton Abbey CZcams account misspelled the word “altar.”
Wrong altar in the title. It's altar not alter. Other than that great clip of poor Edith.
I feel so sorry for her to be left at the alter talk a spineless coward for not tell her for the wedding, but he did not want to marry her so I feel so sorry for her very disrespectful upon a man to do that
spineless would have been not showing up. At least he faced everyone. (even more spineless would have been going through with the wedding due to peer pressure.)
At the very least he could have told her before she walked all the way down the isle.
I was really hoping for an unhinged screech from Edith when she told her sisters to go 😂
Cora is the mother I always wanted… and needed.
Emotional damage!
Her husband to be was such a jackass, and cruel as can be, to let things go on that long. What a coward.
Makes Edith all the more of a sympathetic character. After all she endured so much heartbreak ❤️🩹
Never liked Edith throughout the series. But she NEVER deserved this god bless her
This is the moment we had enough and quit the show, I remember. It was just incredibly silly, melodramatic, soapy writing.
First that the family'd make such a huge deal out of his age and injury, that felt so hard to believe.
Then the writers had him wait until the ALTAR to leave her. There was nothing in character or situation that would make that likely. They clearly wanted to play up the drama to get as much emotion out of the viewers as possible.
Terrible storytelling!
They sure wrote crappy dialog for Cora.
05:58 if that isn't a gorgeous take
You do realise it’s only a television series.
I really hope that they kept those sister pictures for Sybils baby to have in the future.
Altar*****
Altar?
Hell edith was so desparate😂
She actually loved him very much.
Edith deserved so much better. At least she won in the end.
So desperate she would have married anybody.
She was desperate to feel loved, her parents always showed affection for Mary and Sybill but she was the forgotten one, if they hadn’t failed her, she probably wouldn’t have been so impatient to wed.
@@bigrivtodagled8210I’m the middle child and it’s a nightmare. Mom and dad have always favored my older brother and younger sister to me and it’s taken a toll on me
This was such a low move that even Mr Carson was okay to insult Strallan for what he did
Poor Edith
Took chutzpah to wait till the very last second .Made.for good tv drama
Trumpet Tune in C Major!!
We’re going to be terribly terribly happy 🙄
Edith had it coming after what she did to Mary over Mr. Pamuk.
🙂 💯
Dident thomas said she could get someone much better
If you’re going to post something at least spell it correctly. It’s ALTAR for a church altar. Alter means to change something.

Never bought the Edith 'play jane' like figure
The actress is beautiful as is the character
Coward. Still, given the attitudes towards divorce at the time better a terrible blow and get over it than years of misery with a man who was so wishy-washy. And it gave Edith backbone and courage that in the end is what attracted Bertie to her in the end.
It's rather embarrassing that the official Downton Abbey channel would make such a glaring typographical error in the video title.
"Alter" is a verb, meaning "to change."
"Altar" is a noun, and refers to the table or raised structure in a church or other religious ceremonies are held, and is a focal point of many ceremonies and rituals.
Don't forget Mary sabotaged this wedding by denigrating the prospective grooms age.
Jilted at the what??
Altar not alter
Runaway Groom.
LOL. People posting like these are real people. The writer wrote it this way for a reason, so you'd watch and get caught up in the story, and it worked.
Ha. I inadvertently started to watch with the sound off. Watching all the faces you don't need the words. Try it.
Why doesn't he want to marry her?
Because she's to young. And he's older and injured. He thinks it's better for her
hahaha he sucks and the dowager knew it
He was gay
ALTAR, not ALTER!!!!

Sorry, Edith is the character that I dislike the most, just exudes negative energy, jealousy, spite and victim mentality.
Hum; I don't see her that way but interesting
The dialogue in this show was really lazy and poorly suited a lot of the time
How sad and devistating for her
AltAr ...
