Quite possibly the best character development we saw on the show. Early on, Edith lashed out at being the overlooked middle child - it made her bitter and vindictive. But she found purpose in different ways over the course of the series, independent of her family and their opinion of her, and it brought out the good in her. Even when Edith fell on bad luck (and she certainly did), she didn't let herself slide back into her earlier bitterness. And it all paid off beautifully in the end.

First of all, Edith wrote to the Turkish Ambassador and ratted out her sister (who had done nothing wrong). Edith stuck her nose in a matter that had nothing to do with her. By doing so, Edith hurt her father, her mother, her grandmother and her sister (all because she was jealous of her beautiful sister, Mary).
Then Edith tried to start an affair with a MARRIED farmer, who is a tenant on Crawley land. His wife catches Edith and FIRES her from their operation by writing to her father, Lord Grantham. (Edith was angry but forgot about the nasty letter she wrote just to hurt Mary.)
Edith picks up a man and has s*x out of wedlock and becomes pregnant and forces her aunt to lie for her. She then breaks her promise to her aunt and grandmother.
She then forces the neighbor to lie for her and causes trouble in his marriage by her aggressive behavior.
Edith insists that an older family friend marry her. She will NOT take "no" for an answer, so he is forced to abandon her at the altar just to get rid of her.
If you think that type of behavior is "kind, principled, strong and sincere" you need a dictionary.

@@cjosborne9430 The letter Edith wrote to the Turkish embassy a decade prior is in no way a justification for how lady Mary treated her for six seasons, constantly attacking her and damaging her self esteem, and sabotaging on more than one occasion her chance to get married. Remember, Mary hated and bullied Edith way before that letter. Plus, why blame Edith for bringing disrepute to the family through the famous letter instead of blaming the actual person (Mary) who brought disrepute to her family by entertaining (f*cking) the Turkish man in her bed? Also, servants were already talking anyway, and it was a matter of time before the story would have gotten out.
Edith had reasons behind her actions toward Mary and has had a marvelous character arc. At her core, Edith, if perhaps occasionally snobbish, is nevertheless good and decent, unlike her evil sister. Finally, Edith was a modern woman ahead of her time (career ambitions, child and romance out of wedlock, learning how to drive a car, etc.), and that unmistakably ruffled some feathers, but l don't find it wrong. And Edith's strength is evidenced by her surviving the constant bullying she suffered from Mary, Cora and others her entire life. So, her triumph, at the end, was delicious.

Like the others pointed out, Henry isn’t penniless. He might not have the estate and bankroll of Mary, but he’s about as “penniless” as Mathew was the moments before he became the heir. Matthew was a very successful lawyer who could afford a live-in maid and cook, and a house big enough to have spare rooms for them. Henry is known well enough to have been invited to the Sinderby’s party at Bertie’s cousin’s estate that they rented for the occasion. Lord Sinderby with his “moral high ground” attitude would have not associated with a grubby race car driver if there wasn’t some sort of prestige behind him. Also the snobby butler kept snubbing Tom but didn’t ever snub Henry, meaning Henry had a bit of respect to his name.
