      So what? A mother has every right to take her baby, especially if there was no adoption. Happens quite often today when a child is placed in a family as long as the biological mother or parents aren’t seen fit to care for the child. When they can take care they get the children back. In the meantime most choose to stay in contact with the child as much as possible. You can be critical but that’s how it is done and no one condemns that.

    To me the most scandalous of all this is that Rosamond and the Dowager didn’t bother to tell Cora. I can understand that Edith’s reason for not telling her, but it’s inexcusable that the two older women kept her in the dark.
    Side note: I just noticed that Cora intentionally had the kids come down early to distract and influence Robert and the others. Love that!

    • @01Mary02
      @01Mary02 Před 2 lety +9

      Not inexcusable at all. Cora had no problem not telling Robert he had a 3rd grandchild, so why did she freak out on Rosamond for not telling her? The whole story line was dumb any way. There's no way an Earl's unmarried daughter in the 1920s would have ever been allowed to bring her illegitimate child home to the Big House to live. The entire family would have become social outcasts, which was the worst thing imaginable to anyone of the aristocracy back then. The fact that everyone just seemed to accept Marigold when they found out the truth was also ridiculous.

    • @MorganaNessa
      @MorganaNessa Před 2 lety +9

      @@01Mary02 I mean, you're not wrong, the Crawleys all accepting Marigold seems a bit unrealistic, but I think it makes sense that Cora didn't tell Robert at first. On the one hand, Edith was clearly against it. Cora already had to convince her to come back, and I remember that she told Edith that Robert should know and would accept Marigold. But Edith was reluctant to even let Cora see Marigold at first, so I'm pretty sure Cora didn't want to risk losing Edith again by forcing her to come out to everyone in the family. On the other hand, telling your father, the head of the household and in this case also the Lord of a big estate, was a much bigger thing than telling your mother at that time. I'm sure Edith and Cora were aware of this, and in fact we've seen the same thing happening when Mary was against telling Robert about Pamuk. As to why Cora was angry at Rosamund and Violet: I think that's an entirely human reaction. As a mother, it just hurts to not know such crucial things about your child's life, especially if other people in the family knew.

She only gave Marigold away because of the scandal she’d face and also because she believed Michael would come back and they could marry and “adopt” Marigold. Once she knew for certain that Michael was gone, she took matters into her own hands. The entirety of the blame lies with the Drewes. So, I noticed that this clip includes the part where Cora finds out about Marigold. After seeing so many comments from people who say that Edith should have gone to her parents from the get go, I thought I would share my thoughts on why I think Edith didn't feel she could turn to her parents for help.
    With Robert, it's pretty easy. There's no evidence on the show that Edith knows that Robert knows about the Pamuk scandal and has forgiven Mary for it. Therefore, I think it's safe to assume she doesn't know. Because of that, the only information she has regarding how he might react is his extremely angry and judgmental reaction to Ethel serving the Crawley women lunch after Sybil's death. Based on just that, she had every reason to believe that he would react very negatively to the news that she's an unmarried mother.
    With Cora, it's a bit more complicated since, based on what I've seen, Edith does seem to have a vague idea that Cora knows about Pamuk. My guess on why Edith felt she couldn't trust Cora either comes down to two factors. One, Edith's scandal resulted in pregnancy while Mary's did not. With Mary, since there was no baby and no direct evidence that she had been with Pamuk, it would be much easier to sweep it under the rug and hide it. With Edith and Marigold, not so much. Also, I feel like Edith would have sensed from Cora and Mary's conversation in the fifth episode of the first series that Cora was not happy it happened. For all Edith knows, her reaction could have been much worse if there was a baby involved.
    Two, it has to do with the parental favoritism. The show doesn't always do the best job of showing it, but to me, it's pretty clear that Mary is Cora's golden child, the one she has poured a lot of her hope for the future into. In Edith's mind, of course Cora's going to forgive the golden child when she steps out of line. Since Edith's the unfavorite, she could very well have had reason to expect that Cora would react to her scandal much more negatively than she did Mary's.

    • @megwritesall
      @megwritesall Před 2 lety +30

      @@megwritesall Yeah, I think Sybil was Cora's favorite because she was the baby (and the most like her -- American), and Mary was Robert's favorite because she was the oldest (and the most like him, which is why she was so upset that he chose Matthew over her in season 1. Edith and Sybil didn't really care because they had never been his favorites, so Matthew becoming his son didn't really change anything for them.) Edith was a fairly mild blend of both Cora and Robert, so she was easily overlooked. Everyone treated Edith as an afterthought.That's probably an exaggeration, but not to Edith's mind. But that was kind of the overarching story of the whole show. Edith, the forgotten daughter, rose to become the only one married to a title because she loved him BEFORE he had a title.

    • @Zagarspupil
      @Zagarspupil Před 2 lety +20

      @@MeyaRoseGirl Oh they both absolutely saw Edith as an afterthought. I think it’s the very first episode of the show where we see Cora and Robert getting into bed and Robert makes a comment something like “what will become of Edith” and Cora’s response is “she’ll be taking care of me in my old age”.
      At the time, unmarried “spinsters” stayed living with their parents and took care of them as they got older. She definitely didn’t think Edith would ever marry, let alone gain a title higher than any of the rest of them.

    i totally feel for Edith and empathize with her situation but she ruined these people’s lives. her recklessness results in not one but TWO families having Marigold taken away after adoption. and in the case of the Drewes, Marigold was very much integrated into the family unit. they loved her as one of their own. it also eventually results i the Drewe family having to leave the farm their ancestors had lived on for more than a century. i realize that the social consequences would be devastating for Edith if anyone found out she had a child and wasn’t married, but it’s so much harder to sympathize with her when she doesn’t seem to comprehend the consequences of her actions for the Drewes. i always felt so bad for Mrs. Drewe in particular. it’s just awful.

      Well, the Swiss family who adopted Marigold later adopted another baby, so Marigold was quickly replaced and not missed in that household. As for the Drewes, they were only kicked off the property because Mrs. Drewe literally kidnapped the earl’s granddaughter. She knew what the consequences of such an action would be, but she did it anyway.

    Edith because of resentment and severe insecurity is the meanest and most-flawed Crawley child. All of her misfortune did not have to be the way they were if she had not let fear get in her way.

    Edith subit la pression sociale (et familiale, Mary lui aurait vraiment causé du tord avec sa méchanceté). Elle a aimé un homme hors mariage, car il n'avait pu divorcer. Un enfant, Marygold a été conçu. C'était une honte infâme pour toute la famille si cela s'etait su. (Je ne cautionne pas, mais hélas c'etait assez fréquent, de jeunes gens qui s'aiment, et dont l'union est mal vue par la famille... alors ils s'aiment en secret, et un bébé est conçu. Et il faut à tout prix cacher le bébé, cacher qui est sa mère. Et souvent l'enfant etait confié à un couple, pas loin, parce que la mère, déchirée de devoir cacher qu'elle est la mere de l'enfant, alors qu'elle aime cet enfant, souhaite le voir grandir, même de loin. Edith n'avait pas la possibilité de dire que Maigold est sa fille. Elle etait victime du " qu'en dira t-on", de la pression sociale. Sa tante le lui a fait comprendre. Il ne faut pas oublier que son education l'a conditionnée à ne pas savoir s'affirmer. C'est progressivement, quand elle s'est occupée de diriger l'entreprise de publication du journal, puis en obtenant des revenus suffisamment élevés pour pouvoir s'assumer seule et élever son enfant, qu'elle a oser écouter son cœur et élever sa fille, quitte a dire qu'elle est sa marraine et qu'elle l'a adoptée.
    Mrs Drew, s'est attachée à Marigold, elle a cru l'histoire mensongère racontée par son mari. Elle aimait Marygold de tout son cœur, et croyait que c'etait une enfant de la famille de son mari. Alors, elle n'a pas compris pourquoi Edith s'interessait tant à Marigold, ni pourquoi son mari laissait faire. Elle a vécu cela comme une trahison de la part de son mari, qui préférait laisser Marigold à "une dame riche, certes, mais étrangère à la petite, alors qu'elle a montré qu'elle aimait et élevait bien cette enfant. C'était une intrusion dans son foyer la présence d'Edith. Le mensonge du mari a créé cette situation compliquée et conflictuelle, là aussi, ul ne fallait pas que l'on sache qu'Edith edt la mère de Marygold. Il y a souffrance pour ces deux femmes. Situation qui n'aurait pas existé si Edith avait pu dès la naissance, déclarer haut et fort en Angleterre, qu'elle est la mere de l'enfant. On disait qu'une fille mère etait déshonorée, sa famille aussi... C'etait un drame. Mais c'est ridicule. Tout comme la pratique des vols d'enfants à des mères célibataires... pour les donner ou les vendre à des couples fortunés... Qui faisaient croirent que c'est leur enfant biologique.

      She didn’t leave two families “devastated”. The Schröders adopted another baby and wrote that to Edith- so obviously they stayed in friendly contact.
      And Marigold was only a short time with the Drews.
      All problems there derived from Mr. Drew’s poor decision not to tell his wife the truth.
      Edith never wanted to give up her child and showed great courage to try everything in her power to keep her daughter.
      I hope you will never have to give up a child of yours to understand how horrible that is.

    Edith is just a person who makes one bad decision after another. And as it often happens as a little rich girl, she escapes the responsibility.
    First she left the child In Switzerland and then she changed her mind, then she left it with the Drews and changed her mind, then she left to London with her, then she didnt tell Bertie the truth. Its like she can't do anything right.
    Not to mention her pursue of poor sweet sir Anthony whom she practically forced down the aisle and then was in tears when he came to his good senses.

      Idk where you got that from the comment. I'm saying she shouldn't have used the Drews like that. She could have been upfront with Mrs. Drew instead of lying to her. Or she could have straight up admitted to mothering a child to her family.
      I'm saying she's selfish for putting her own wants before everyone else's needs (including Marigold). I get she was living in a patriarchal society and was left in a crappy situation, BUT they are the consequences of her own actions and she makes everyone else suffer instead of her.

      @@Elizabeth-hc3mi That would be fine now, but not during those times. It's not just the patriarchy, the women were just as bad or worse. Mrs Drew was clearly unstable, as Mr Drew knew, since it was HIS idea not to tell her. She did the best she could in a bad situation. You really need to work on your empathy too. Pot/kettle/black

    • @12classics39

      She planned a whole future and life with Michael and it was taken away from her. Marigold was all she had left of him and yet society’s ridiculous double standard of the time forced her to do unbearably difficult things not just for herself, but for the sake of her family. All of the Crawleys would’ve been shunned if the truth came out, not just her. also I think her “woe is me” attitude stems from her treatment by her family. Mary abuses her in every way except physically at every turn, and her parents always treat her as less than. She’s grown up with hardly any confidence in herself. The show’s events enable her to finally grow a spine and feel better about herself.

    At least men are smart enough that when they abandon their children they disappear and leave the children with a family that will live the child. They don’t try to claim the child years later and try to break up that relationship.
