      The scene where Cora speaks to Sybil for the last time always gets me. She loses her baby, and the last thing she can say as she sits with her is to promise that she’ll look after her family, once Sybil can’t anymore.

      I really really miss Sybil but I feel like if Tom and the Crawleys hadn't had Sybil's death to unite them they wouldn't have become so close. I honestly didn’t like their relationship at all. For me, it felt too rushed and incredibly forced upon in order to move the storyline forward. They only had about 2-3 short scenes together in season one, out of nowhere, confessed their love and immediately tried to elope in season two, then got married (off screen) and Sybil was pregnant, all in just one episode in season three and everything was just mentioned in casual conversations in the house. Rose and Atticus have had much lesser screen time than Sybil and Branson but they had way more chemistry together and at least had a wedding scene where we can see their love being shown on screen. Finally, it didn’t help at all for their character development when Sybil abruptly dies after childbirth, which left Branson as a widower. It was a missed opportunity to see these two characters grow into their roles as parents and grow their love for each other both as parents and husband and wife, just like the love between what both Cora and Richard had developed for each other after they’d gotten married and had their first child.

      @amberanime Před 4 měsíci +1

      Missed opportunity and also unrealistic. She and tom clearly stayed in touch if she had the chance to tell him he was being foolish. I'd love an Irish lady in the show as well, who shows up to be an amazing grandma, not posh at all, and like Tom not afraid to be herself, but for Tom, would be polite to the crawleys for accepting him as family when he cant go back to ireland. At any rate, Tom's family should have been shown more. But the writers dont care about Tom's family because thats not a posh family and the show is still very pro upper class of old. The only lower class we get real focus on are staff members, and even then it's usualy their interaction with each other, not their families and lives outside their workplace. Daisy was like the exception to this rule with Mr Mason. But he lived close by. You never saw mr's Pattmore visiting a friend during a break, or Anna going out with friends her age. Its like all these people lived purely for downton and had nothing else going on ever. Untill they did, which usualy also ment them leaving. The downstairs is purely there for contrast with upstairs, which is the group of people the show puts more efford in. Introducing new posh families and characters all the time. Tom was a great way to put more focus on a ''normal'' family. The only time we got that was with his brother, and the brother was treated as the villain of the episode rather then a human being who has understandable reservations about dining and playing nice with an elete english family. I didnt like the brother either, but thats because the show went out of its way to make him unlikable. Which is the actual problem. the show is classist, much as I enjoy watching it despite of that.
      Still, maybe a future movie could have Tom's family actualy show up. I doubt it though, as he got married to Lucy, and there was no better excuse for his irish family to show up then him getting remarried. Tom is a prop for the Crawley family, not his own fleshed out character, much as I love him. We never got any episodes of him away from downton and deciding, in an episode, that he missed his new family. We never got Tom's pov in the Sybil romance, because we never got to see him interact with his mother or brother or anyone he was close with and their opinions on all this. Only Sybil's family and the staff. Everyone that isnt upper class or staff doesnt matter in this show. And if they do, it's usualy in a not so nice light (Toms new socialist romantic interest and his brother are the 2 examples that are most obvious to me where they are cast as wrong, and the crawleys ar right when it's not so black and white.)

    I like how the series portrays Men as the widows. Tom Branson, Lord Merton and Sir Anthony Stralhon. We (society) tend to view widows as Old ladies grieving their husbands. But in life the reverse happens far more than we like to adhere to. I feel so sorry for Tom after Sybill dies. He loved her knowing the risks, despite the risks. And she loved him as her Knight in shining armor. Whisking her away to a different life. During the war, Sybill saw the world as it really is. Harsh, cruel, romantic, first, true, honest, and most of Loving and Appreciative of a hard days work. To earn a living that's both long and rewarding.

In the ancient world, Sybils were prophetesses able to forecast the future, perhaps our Sybil could also see the changes in British culture that were to come from women's rights to the jostling of class. She was ahead of the curve and a transgressor of worn off boundaries!

    I think what truly turned Lord Grantham around was when Tom refused to be bought off. At that point, Lord Grantham began to look at Tom differently. The Granthams also appreciated the fact that Tom’s Mother agreed with them too. And that two had a realistic plan even if they all disagreed with it.

    I truly believe I will never get over Sybil's death. She is easily one of my favorite characters in any series I've ever watched, and I would have loved to see more of her and Tom, especially as parents. I would be DELIGHTED if we ever got some sort of movie-series situation about Sybbie and her life growing up in downton, tho

    I was absolutely devastated when she died, I cried. It was so awful - one of the best characters on the show.

    My favorite scene is when Gwen returned with her husband and told their secret pact. I loved the look in Tom’s eyes as she told it. Such great acting.

    Ahhh she’s so beautiful 😍 wish we didn’t have to say goodbye to her so early in the series 😞

    Lady Sybil was probably one of my top 3 characters in the show by the end of the series. She was innately kind and compassionate. Traits that Mary and Edith simply didn't initially have. By the series finale she was still one of my favorite characters and I wish Jessica Brown Findlay stayed longer to let her character storyline develop further

    I’m re-watching this series again 😁
    I REALLY love & respect Tom’s character: he stands up for his believes no matter what and was SO honorable!
    It’s a shame what happened; he & Sybil could’ve been SO happy together! 😭
