    Hey Phil,
    I'm a longtime subscriber and have loved your videos since the natty or not days. Genuinely looking to discuss...
    TikTok's truecrimeafying "the man" into snuff fantasy has made the issue lose merit and I 100% agree with your statement, "The reality is the average man does not pose a threat to women."
    However, the question's audience means its not about the average man at all, it's about the average woman - would you dispute that "the reality is that the average woman has been threatened by a man"?
    Consider these stats:
    > In the U.S., 30% of women have experienced domestic violence.
    > Globally, the figures are incredibly similar.
    > That's just the partner-on-partner violence.
    > In the UK, 97% of women aged 18-24 reported being harassed or assaulted - 97%!!!
    The reality is, the vast majority of women have either experienced violence or unwanted sexual attention from a man. Those who slipped through the net undoubetdly have numerous and family members hwo didn't.
    Meanwhile, most people's experience with bears is limited to cartoons or funny videos of bears shaking their butts on TikTok.
    If you agree that the average man does not pose a threat to women but that the average woman has been threatened by a man, I think the main thing the average man should take away from this whole debate is surely we need to do something about these shitty, violent men who've left so many women in our lives answering "The Bear"?
    Not "Not all men" and "dont they knowhow fast bears are".

      The average woman feels threatened but you agree the average man is not a threat. You are correct that something must be done about the reasons why the average woman feels threatened. But, that also means answering bear is wrong and based on a bigoted view of men. Ergo: more has to be done to protect women from assault of any kind, and women need to stop generalizing or they'll find themselves fighting that fight alone.

    • @ioris8363
      @ioris8363 Před měsícem +3

      I think there's something to be said about "the average woman being threatened by a man." I'll give an example, if I were to walk by a bunch of dudes covered in tattoos alone. I might feel threatened, but in reality those could be the nicest people out there, but it's the ominous atmosphere. What I'm getting at is I could feel threatened, but not necessarily be in danger. That's not to invalidate the feelings, but to say that they may not necessarily be splendid.

    The 'man or bear' question is a question similar to the question about a tree falling in the woods with no one around to hear it. The answer opens a window into the person's psyche. The overwhelming ammount of answers in favor of the bear are speaking of a shared experience between women. People read way too hard into it and it leads to retardation like 'yeah, but what about 50 men with Vietnam PTSD and machine guns VS 100000 bears who listen to Linkin Park on repeat.
    All this is saying is that women have more negative experiences with the average male stranger than positive and we, as a collective, should reflect on that and ask ourselves why that is. Not every woman is down with the Corporate, marketable misandry and this bear question wasn't meant to devolve into stupidity.

    Now imagine some smaller woman who have also been through similar situations. Guess what? Its a lot of them. They are right to be wary of potential threats. They dont know if you are a nice guy, they dont care. Its all about risk reduction.
    Ask women in your life how many times theyve been molested, approached aggressively and catcalled at 12 yesrs old. That is why they choose the bear.

    Female perspective here since I know Phil doesn't have a high amount of female viewers. Personally I think the way the question is phrased, it's asked in a way to imply that the man in the woods with you has the same degree of threat or more, than said bear. By comparing the two, as a woman I'd assume the hypothetical man is a sicko and not my chill coworker Bob from work who I trust. Because I believe the focus is less about "ooo bear not scary, bear big furry friend" and more about the capability for violence and suffering that human beings (in particular men in this scenario) are capable of causing to one another. Yes a bear will maul you (grizzleys I believe will eat you alive yikes) but the human ability to reimagine and inflict torture, seems more daunting than my throat being ripped out ngl.
    I understand this seems completely irrational at face value, but you're talking to women who unfortunately have had a life time of encounters with/heard stories from friends of how dangerous men can be.
    Of course everyone's entitled to their own opinion but I think what the conversation was supposed to illicit was "how unsafe do women feel on a daily basis" and possibly get some people thinking deeper on that topic. Unfortunately the result has overwhelming been men (somewhat understandably) offended. I can see how that feels insulting, but remember if you're a good man, and you were known to these women, they'd choose you over the bear. But we're dealing with a HYPOTHETICAL man where HARM is implied. It would be awesome if this caused some dudes to reflect on how frequently women feel unsafe in daily life, but hey, to each their own.
    Anyways sorry for the paragraph.

      Sadly, that is your interpretation of a very simple question. None of that nuance, however, is explicitely stated and thus irrelevant. I don't care what the question may imply. It's a simple scenario with an average guy. If said average guy defaults to an abuser (or worse), then you're the one that needs to re-evaluate your perception of half the world's population.

    • @silence8714
      @silence8714 Před měsícem +8

      Personal interpretation is the only thing that matters in this situation.
      We're discussing why women choose the bear over a man afterall.
      I find it a bit ironic though that your doing the exact thing your accusing the other commenter on. The question was simply "Would you want to be stuck in the forest with a man or a bear?". There's no mention of the man being the average guy or the worst of the worst, and so people are answering the question in their own subjective way, which you are aswell.
      The people answering the bear, might have real bad experiences that influenced that choice. Sexual violence is pretty common wordwide afterall. About 1 in 3 women will experience sexual violence once in their lives according to the WHO, and that number might be even higher than 1 in 3 due to not every incident being reported

    • @etch-e-sketch4051
      @etch-e-sketch4051 Před měsícem

      Yet the world is as dangerous as it is, for everybody. Its the misleading implication in the entire men vs women narrative that the threats are mutually exclusive, but they aren't.
      A human being that will hurt another is a human being that will hurt another. There are men that hurt men, men that hurt women, women that hurt men, and women that hurt women. Some of those people hurt one one type, others hurt both!
      Saying 'bear or man' is intentionally inflammatory in service of the men vs women narrative of things. 'Bear vs stranger' would be far less so because that's really at the heart of even what you're getting at: the unpredictability of _people_ , not just the unpredictability of _men_ .

    The real offense of the question is the people who think they're being clever by trying to frame abuse issues in such a stupid way as a gotcha.
    Cause that's what really matters in the end (at least as far as tiktok users are concerned), not the conversation, the gotcha. Either you agree that men are dangerous and have to bring up the all mighty "something needs to be done" and never is.
    Or you point out the flaws in the question and fail to validate their feelings/concerns. Paradoxically validating the feeling that not enough is being done.

      I've heard plenty of psychologists explain how beliefs like prejudice and bias came about as a defense mechanism for prehistoric humans. Basically judging strangers solely on being different back in the hunter-gather days was necessary as you didn't trust people outside your tribe or clan. So fearing unknown men in a dangerous location (alone in the woods) is a subliminal alert in the brain made louder by too many real world examples (like being held against you will in a basement for two years is an obvious allusion to the Ariel Castro case). Ironically, it seems a lot of women base their fear of men base on people they know instead of strangers.
      Also I fear Phil and other men miss the point with "not all men." Yes, not every man is bad. But there's still plenty of bad men doing gender base crimes to make the gender look bad.

    Tbh I'm not mad women for picking the bear over the man. It's just a survival instinct. The worst thing a bear can do to a woman is kill her. The worst thing a man can do to a woman is rape, torture and eventually murder her. Not all bear would want to kill you and not all men would want to rape, torture or murder you but if we go by worst case scenario in both of these situations, facing a bear seems safer. Still this question isn't detailed enough. People seem to have different perception of what a bear is. Many women who chose bear are probably thinking of some timid black bear and the men who are offended at women choosing bear are probably thinking of some brown bear who's always on a rampage although neither a black bear is timid nor a brown bear is always on a rampage. So, as the probability of being attacked is unknown, choosing the bear would be the better option. However, if the probability of being attacked is 100% then choosing the man would be better because if a bear really want to kill you, there's nothing you can do about it.

      More men than women are evil? Lmao. Men and women are just evil in different ways. Men have more physical strength and testosterone drives dangerous, aggressive behaviour. Meanwhile women have more power in the sexual marketplace and are more skilled at manipulation.
      Dudes be swerving across lanes without signalling, picking fights outside nightclubs and robbing you for drug money. Ladies be sabotaging each others' dating prospects, using sex as leverage and painting their exes as abusive monsters for sympathy and to game the legal system.

      Would you swim with sharks if you knew the unlikelyhood of a shark attacking you?
      Completely ignoring the fact that they could end you pretty easily if they wanted.
      Because I strongly believe that the consequences of a scenario, despite the low chance of that scenario happening, should bear a lot of weight as well and that is probably what a lot of women are focusing on.

      @@silence8714 Can you explain what you mean? Because I'm not sure whether you're talking about bears or men when you're talking consequences here

      @@rdrrr I was trying to get across the point that even if the majority of people or men in this case, are good people, the possibility of meeting that one bad apple that could f*ck you up, should carry some weight.
