Ferrari, they have a rich history in motorsports and their cars are arguably the most luxurious things with insane performance numbers. Ferrari also needs no introduction, with a line up like the Ferrari F40, the Testarossa and the Ferrari LaFerrari the world is pretty aware of the Ferrari brand and how synonymous it is with everything exotic and Italian. So why is one of the most legendary car makers in the world so harsh to Influencers and doubtful of how the world perceives their brand? Join Nolan as he explores two cases of Ferrari sending cease and desist orders to celebrities doing what they want with their cars. Is it justified? How could it negatively affect the Ferrari brand?
WheelHouse answers all the questions about the automotive world you never thought to ask. Nolan Sykes looks at the history, sociology and psychology behind the cars you love, and the features you might overlook.

Mechanically, ergonomically and aesthetically, I like Lamborghini and Ferrari equally, but for different reasons.
If I ever have the means to buy such a car, I will be more inclined towards Lamborghini because of Ferrari's continued bullshit.
In addition to their cease & desist letters, Ferrari's customer point system restricts you from buying their flagship models unless you own other higher profile Ferraris or are an A-list celebrity in most cases. If you put a build order in for any new Ferrari and it is your first car owned with the horse badge, it will be a while before you will be able to collect your car unless you pay a lot extra to move up on their build schedule. Ferrari seems to artificially inflate their exclusivity with some of their cars. Its almost as if they act like they are doing you a favor buy letting you buy a car from them.

I find it absolutely insane that a car company could issue a “cease & desist” exclaiming that someone needs to remove the badges from a car and install the factory ones, even though the car company technically does not own the vehicle anymore. If any judge were to award the right for a car company to do this, it would set a dangerous precedent in the car modification community where any car company could essentially sue you into removing a modification and returning the vehicle to a stock configuration just because their fragile feelings were hurt.

It's the same with fan art, you are actually technically not in the right to sell fan art, you cannot make fan art and make a living out of it, but companies are not stupid like ferrari, and that community creates interest and is highly beneficial for them.

Not just car modification! Precedent will open the flood gates to companies forbidding people from doing things to stuff they own, like redecorating a house, or repainting a guitar, not to mention the right to repair on its own. It's companies DREAM to forbid people from tinkering with stuff they already bought because that would ease the already abusive practiced of planned obsolescence, proprietary components, or charging premium for a regular quality item by limiting up the lesser model artificially. I a not even talking about things like overclocking above warranty performance, but stuff like paying to unlock factory-locked-but-already-there functions, which Teslas learned to do on their own.

D Carbs I think the point he’s trying to make is that Ferrari makes a lot of their money from consumers, not their racing team. Because Enzo was a dick he basically ended up creating the Lamborghini we all know today who basically is Ferrari’s Competitor. Lamborghini has never been into racing because there whole brand is about being the opposite of Ferrari. And just because there brand, values, and culture are different that doesn’t mean they aren’t competitors. They both compete to make better exotic cars for consumers. Ford, isn’t a big competitor in terms of there consumer sales since ford Gt have a very limited number and only have one car but they are a competitors on the track.

So now Williams is sitting in a worse position money wise than they were a decade ago. They're in debt and can't afford to pay engineers what they are worth. They've become a feeding ground for other teams, and the hires they make from other teams are into promotions they aren't qualified for but it's what they can afford. The only reason they haven't gone bankrupt is the heritage bonus. They've just enough money to put a car on the track and pay off their creditors each year. In the last 5 years they've gone through 3 head engineers and it isn't going to get better. Choices made by the FIA a decade ago sunk them without outside money to help eat the cost.

“They know who buys their cars”
I think that’s the catch. The majority of people who would dislike Ferrari for being so controlling of their brand will never have the buying power to have one. And the majority of people who buy a Ferrari are probably not interested to make eccentric modifications on it.
This video only makes sense if the majority of super car buyers are youtubers and eccentrics. But I’m willing to bet that’s not the case.
Where Lamborghini has succeeded though is that their more permissive brand philosophy has given them more exposure, which has been critical to carving out their own image and market.
But I’m willing to bet Ferrari isn’t suffering too much from it.

Anyone can buy the latest Lambo and even get a discount, but so many people are beating a path to Ferraris door that they can't keep up with demand. In the case of Philip Plein, at least in part does have precedence elsewhere. Here in Straya there was an issue when the Fremantle Football Club chose The Dockers as their nickname. The name was chosen to honour the city's port history, but Levi wasn't having bar of it. On the one hand, they didn't want the Dockers name used on club apparel because they had the trademark on it. On the other hand, Freo was sponsored by another workwear company Yakka, and Levi probably didn't want a repeat of the Duracell bunny. By putting his shoes on the car, he is clearly trying to associate them with his brand, which is a marketing technique, while also putting them on the same level or grabbing sales from Ferrari's own merch. Gucci, Louis, even brands like Rolls-Royce cater to the younger and newer generation. The Wraith is a perfect example, slowly building the young into becoming Phantom drivers or Dawn owners rather than just rejecting them. I remember when brands like Gucci, Louis, Cristal used to throw lawsuits at rappers for making their brands look trashy which was sometimes understandable lol but nowadays they've embraced it (unless you're cristal which no one thinks about anymore). Gucci & Louis are now thriving, Ferrari are really doing themselves a disservice. Lamborghini are now snatching up all of the next owners of supercars because they're more appealing and clearly welcoming to the new and younger generation.

Ferrari has to learn that consumers are not F1 drivers racing for their team. They don't get to dictate shit on someone else's property. They couldn't even argue trademark infringement being caused by Deadmau5, as he's not selling those nor using them to tarnish the brand. It's his personal Ferrari he bought with his money. In some ways, Ferrari could be accused of violating freedom of expression and practicing censorship. They don't own the cars they sell after they've been paid for by a customer.

Ferrari has long been concentrated on F1 and its no secret, at least since the early 70s and exclusively in the 80s. Ferrari IS F1. Thats why people know the brand of Ferrari. In the same way you dont hear Ferrari dominating in WRC. Because F1 is the most popular and expensive motorsport of all, Ferrari has no need to dominate in all; F1 is enough for Ferrari, and it is in practice. Porsche doest sell their cars based on their success in FIA Endurance champiobships because nobody watches that. Ferrari built a reputation through F1, and as the sport became widely popular in the 70s and 80s, everyone knew about it. Ferrari is self advertised from F1.

My thinking is that Ferrari has a long and storied racing history and markets it's cars with that in mind. Lamborghini has a long and storied history of selling cars to anyone who can afford them and markets it's cars accordingly. Looking at the car designs I can see the difference in philosophy. Ferrari's are aerodynamic beauties that breath racing and sport driving. Lamborghini's are sleek, stylish, speed machines designed to attract attention. I can envision using the Ferrari as my daily driver and the Lambo would be my ride to parties and other events. If I were super-wealthy, that is...

50+ years ago, Rolls was pretty pissed about what John Lennon did to one of their creations. I don't believe they ever sold him another one. They probably weren't thrilled with the garish paint jobs for Bagwhan Shri Rashneesh either, but he was a REALLY good customer! Like, Sultan of Brunei good.
