    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  Před 6 lety +1

      Hey. I would start at the carb/fuel system, clean/rebuild, check your tank/hose, is the vent open, look for air leaks at the hose connections, is the float/needle closing when you pump the primer bulb, check the choke, is it working properly, will it idle with the choke closed, is the slow speed needle responding when you turn it, sounds like it may be clogged/sucking air, check the roller cam, is it opening the carb butterfly, ''link and sink'', replace old fuel lines, check the fuel pump.... I had a 25 horse johnson , 90's model with the newer style carb like the 1990 johnson 30hp that I have now, it would only idle if I put two fingers over the carb acting like a choke. I would swear up and down that the carb was clean and ok, especially after i cleaned it 3-4 times, well, after checking everything again and again I put an old 70's carb on it and it idled/ran perfect! I was blown away, couldn't believe that the carb was clogged, I was convinced it had to be something else. The moral of the story is, don't assume anything with these motors. Hang in there and let me know how it goes. thx

    Holy smokes! Is that top speed and responsiveness what you would say average for a dialed in 9.5?

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  Před 6 lety

      Hey. you just saw it. For a dialed in 9.5 on a loaded 15 ft. Dura Craft jon boat, 17mph would be the average top speed. The Dura Craft is a heavy boat, we did a test run on a friend's 9.5 and it was hitting 19 mph, but, the boat had no gear in it. Plus, the GPS apps aren't always accurate, you could be running 19.9999 mph but it's only going to show 19. I just tested three different apps and they were all different readings, two of them were pretty close to each other but the third one was off the charts. To get a true average you would have to get about ten 9.5's, all with the same compression, all tuned and dialed in and all run on the same boat

      Hey. kool man. one thing about those motors, there is a doughnut type rubber gasket in the mid section that keeps the exhaust fumes from coming in around the power head. when you get it on the boat and it runs fine with the hood on, your ok, but if it runs like crap with the hood on but runs fine with the hood off then you know its that gasket. The exhaust fumes are choking it out, no fresh air! You have to take the whole thing apart to replace the gasket, basically the mid section sides have to be removed. Fun Fun Fun. Hope yours will be ok! let me know how it runs or post some vids. Thanks again . Stay tuned !

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  Před 4 lety

      Hey. Pull the fuel line off the carburetor pump up the primer bulb from the gas tank and see if the gas is getting through. Then pull the pull start a few times to see if the pump is shooting the gas out through the line. If you have a big drill with a socket you can turn it that way instead of pulling on it. It may be a week or bad fuel pump. It's a process of elimination. If the fuel pump is pumping and it's running with the choke on then you're slow speed circuit is either clogged or not adjusted properly. You may have to clean the carburetor again. Also try starting it up with the choke on then rev it up as high as you can a few times. Sometimes that will clear the slow speed idle and pull any clogs through. Let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching!

      Check the compression first... If it's not seized up, that is... Pass it up if it is or doesn't have the proper compression. It will likely then be way too much money to get it running. Though sometimes a seized up engine can be easily fixed... But then you will have to buy it to check out the compression.

    Hello, I just found a guy selling a 1965 Johnson 9.5 and a 1972 Evenrude 9.5 for $250.00 FOR BOTH! He said hes had the 1972 Evenrude running on his boat. And THINKS the 1965 has good comprehension but cant give me any numbers. I haven't seen the motors in person yet, just pictures. Any idea if this would be a good deal? I figured if there's a problem with the 1972, I'd use the 1965 for parts. If they both run, I'd resell the 1965. Any thoughts would be appreciated. BTW, I know NOTHING about fixing outboards other than the research I've done so far. Thanks

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  Před 4 lety

      Well I think if you feel like taking on the challenge then pull the trigger. Get a compression tester and test them, check the oil in the gearcase too. $250 usually means 2-225. Some people would not recommend this outboard as a "starter motor" if you have no experience with outboards. I didnt have any experience either when I started and I had a few of them. Check out leeroysramblings.com for everything you ever need to know about the 9.5's. That's where I learned about them and more. Good luck!

      hey. i hope you can tell the difference in this old video compared to the first ones i was putting up. i did my homework and i finally figured out how to keep the quality even though i dont have the originals anymore. and after doing even more homework i figured out yesterday what was going on with my new videos too. i'm using windows movie maker, its not as good as the older version but its really simple to use. i tried some of the new popular video editing software and they're just to complicated, so to say, and get a little pricey for what i am doing. WMM was leaving my new vids a little lifeless after processing the video for uploading. there is no way to adjust color/contrast with it, it does do brightness +- though. so, after uploading numerous short clips to youtube and experimenting with WMM I found out that i can enhance the new 1080p vids using my NVIDIA GRAPHICS CARD software during editing and processing. you should see a difference in ( this video ) and the next HD vid i upload.
