1972 9.5HP EVINRUDE TOTAL TARE- DOWN IT DIDN'T TAKE MUCH TO BRING THIS OLD OUTBOARD BACK TO LIFE, SOMETIMES YOU JUST GET LUCKY! 9.5 SERIES THIS OLD OUTBOARD RESURRECTING SMALL OUTBOARD MOTORS
I got my grandfather's 69' 9.5 when he died. It had been sitting in his shed for 15-20yrs when I got it, and it sat in my garage for another 10 before I got around to using it. Carb kit, water pump, adjust the points and put in a jet 2 sizes larger than the stock one to compensate for the modern ethanol gas we have now days. Still, to this day, starts on the first pull. What an amazing little machines these outboards are!
"Sea Horse!!!" My grandfather had one back in 70ish. I have a little used one that my Canadian father in law donated! It is a creampuff! Thanks for the video!
Possibly the smoooothest running & idling small outboard ever engineered!!! The down-draft carburetor, the same style as carburetors used on cars/trucks for almost ~100~ years, is why it runs smooth, unlike the side-draft type crabs. used on all other motors!!!! ~Badda-Bing , Badda-BOOOOM~!~
Excellent video i have the same engine and having an issue with the idle adjuster/airflow needle which you show removed in beginning of video. Mine is stuck and can't screw in our out. How do I get it out or adjust? Seems to be all the way out and just spins when trying to move counterclockwise by hand.
Hey Thanks. Wow hard to say without really looking at it.Check the schematic, maybe the retaining ring, washers, or spring are getting hung up # 22, 23, 24. www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1972&hp=9.5&model=9R72M&manufacturer=Johnson§ion=Carburetor. I would try and giggle it out, You may have to force it out? Curious to know what happens. Thanks again !
72 Johnson golden anniversary 9.5hp, cool! These things enjoy a love/hate relationship with mechanics for sure....You tackled the toughest part though, splitting the lower motor cover case....Hope you replaced the water pump impeller while it was apart. Sounds nice, but those things were never known for being too powerful at WOT, the older 10hps could run circles around the 9.5s...
Hey. Wind it up as tight as you can and line up the hole for the Rope, you'll see it. Then Clamp it so it doesn't unwind. I use Vice Grips. Now thread the rope through and tie a knot at the end and burn the end so it dosent unravel and the knot stays tied. Then hold on to the rope and release the vice grips. The rope will then wind up. thanks for watching ! Stay tuned !
Thanks for the review! I have one of these, and love the way it runs except for extended trolling. Drops one cyl and dies. Almost always restarts, first pull, and repeates 5-10 later. Clean carb and new thermostat, no change. Lots of top end. Any ideas?
Hey. It may be a coil going bad. When they start getting hot they start breaking down. Then it cools off and starts again. They are cheap on ebay. Thanks for tuning in!
Is there exhaust escaping under the cover ? these motors had an inherent problem if the cover is left off does it run ok? And if you put the cover back on does it sound like it drops a cyl . That's because the donut seal around the lower unit is bad or failing letting exhaust creep under the cover and starts choking the motor on fumes, very common for the 9.5 Huge job to replace this 15.00 rubber donut. Takes a experienced outboard guy 2 days done correctly. I have seen guys drill a 2 inch hole in the cover over the carb and that works, or stuffing a bunch of rags between the inner pan and exhaust stack but both ways have there drawbacks . With the roof vent it leaks water into the carb unless covered when raining, and the rags get wet and blow out of position .Or Junk the motor
I just picked one up for free ripping it apart tomorrow I think the lower unit is junk cracked skeg no oil and won’t shift let’s see what happens great video
Hey. Thanks. Sounds good. Check Ebay for a Gear Case. Here's a parts list for a 72 www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1972&hp=9.5&model=9223M and you can find a manual here boatinfo.no/. Thanks for watching ! Stay tuned !
Thanks I got the old lower gear case off beautiful broken bolts had to heat em up got everything out the gears had metal all mashed in them I got a used lower gear case for 66 bucks on eBay I’m kinda stuck I can’t remove the old shaft from the power head
@@jimcatx3090 Yeah they can get stuck in there, another pain in the azz! Turn it upside down and spray some PB Blaster in it and let it soak for a couple days. Clamp some vice grips on it and try to tap it out. Dont forget to grease it up before you put it back in. thx. Stay tuned !
I live over in Sanford and just picked up a Johnson 9.5 that is running well but the power seems low. 😔 Pushing a 14ft fiber glass V Hull and can't seem to get up on plane with two adults. Do you take clients? I'd love to have you take a look if your available. 😁 If not what might cause lower power output? Thank you so much! Brandon
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. No I'm not taking any extra projects right now but thanks for asking. Those 9.5's tend to have low compression but will still run. I would check the compression & clean the high speed jet/orifice in the carb bowl and give it a good tune-up, plugs, points, condensers. The standard prop that comes on them has a real low pitch, not really meant for speed but more for pushing a load. They were designed for the fishermen with the low profile and the ability to push a couple guys and a boat full of tackle. They will do 18-20 mph with the right setup. It's all about the weight! What size motor is your boat rated for? Thanks again & Stay tuned !
Yeah, there's a big donut like seal that goes bad and exhaust fumes kill the motor and/or the powerhead to exhaust gasket can cause the same problem. I've seen people cut a hole in the cowl to get some fresh air. It helps depending on how bad the leak is. #39 & 87. Thanks! www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1972&hp=9.5&model=9R72M&manufacturer=Johnson§ion=Exhaust+Housing
Hey . I would start with the carb, clean it real good especially the high speed orifice/ jet. If that dosent help reset the link and sync. It can be a little tricky on the 9.5 if I remember correctly. Puts some new plugs in it and make sure you firing on both cylinders. Also check out Leeroys. A lot of good stuff there. www.leeroysramblings.com/index.html Let me know. thx. Stay tuned !
Soldier53, Just curious on what you found out about your 9.5 cutting out on the top end. Mine recently started doing this. I ordered a new fuel pump and carb kit and plan on trying this first. Also, thanks again This Old Outboard for posting your videos! Nice job! I mounted mine on our homemade mini-boat! czcams.com/video/7A9Zwbvnsv8/video.html
Hey Rudy. There is no real recommended compression or standard psi on outboards. Other than the higher the better. What is recommended is the compression per cylinder should be within 5 lb's of each other for good performance. Dead even is best! Thanks again for tuning in!
Hello sir, love your commentary, I have a 72 Evinrude sportwin 9.5 hp.. I am rebuilding the carburetor, the question I have, is on the idle mixture screw there is an o ring, does that get inserted into the carb body or is it just compressed up to it by the washer at the end of the spring?? I figured I'd ask, because you definitely know your shit.. thanks ,Chuck
Hey Chuck. Sorry it took so long, I've been moving the past couple days. Anyway its been a long time since I worked on one of these so its hard to remember. I'm looking at the schematic, www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1972&hp=9.5&model=9223M&manufacturer=Evinrude§ion=Carburetor. And its not telling me much other than put it back together with the correct parts and it should fall into place. I'm thinking,,,, The oring should seat from the pressure of the spring between the two washers and clip when you screw the needle back in. You may have to get it started, put a little 2 stroke oil on it. You can find the manual here, boatinfo.no. And leeroysramblings.com has alot of good info on these motors. I had 3 of these motors and they're a bit of a different animal compared to OMC's other outboards. Some people love working on them and some hate working on them. I thought they were cool. Anyway I'm sure you'll figure it out and let me know how it goes. Thanks !

I bought a 1964 9.5 Evinrude Sportwin from a guy who said it was running when it was put away. Not! So I've been through it. Compression is 65 and 70. Reed valves look good. Rebuilt the carburetor (but I was afraid to force the high speed jet out of the lower carb section. (The two rearmost screws holding the top of the carb to the bottom were badly corroded and I twisted the blind one off in trying to free it up and had to drill it out and retap the hole.) I could peer in with a light and stick wires, carb cleaner and compressed air through. (IS THERE A TRICK TO GETTING THAT OUT? Afraid I'd bugger it up after my tussle with the carb screws and I think this is where my problem is.) All the other passages (including the ones behind the two aluminum freeze plugs) have been cleaned with carb cleaner, wires and compressed air. All fuel lines are new. The fuel pump is new. The tanks and supply line is new. No air or fuel leaks between the tank and the carburetor. Coils look newer. Points look ok. I cleaned then and set the gaps at 0.020" I can get the engine to run by staring it with a drill and socket on the flywheel nut but the engine will not run without near full choke. Thinking about buying an ultrasonic cleaner next. Sure wish mine would run like yours. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom you can share.
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. I wouldn't mess with that jet. I learned my lesson a long time ago. Although they do have a special omc tool for them. They're around $40 on ebay. I wouldn't do it, but that's me. It's been years since I worked on one of these so my memory isn't that great but it sounds like the low speed/idle circuit is clogged. I know you cleaned the heck out it. If they were the other style of carb I would say to check the tiny holes in the top of the throat just behind the throttle butterfly. I use a welding tip cleaner tool for poking in the holes. It has several different sizes and works great. $5 at home depot. No amount of carb cleaner ever works they need to be poked! Anyway you can look at it and see how its set up. The holes are very tiny and just at the tip of the slow speed needle if it's like the other style carbs. I don't remember. But it may be worth a shot! Check out my carb cleaning video if need be. The sonic cleaner should probably do it. Thanks again & Stay tuned !
