Thank you! I just picked up a seized '73 Evinrude 9.5 and this video helps a lot to give me an idea of what I'm faced with. I pulled the gear case/lower unit today, so I know it's seized in the power head.
Brandon's Garage oh yeah, very stuck. Just pulled off the cylinder head and I'm glad I did. Revealed a lot of white build up in the water porting. Cylinder head otherwise looks good. Wish I could say the same about the cylinder wall. Bottom cylinder, I can't yet tell if it's pitting or some build up from the thing sitting for two years. I figure the next chance I get I'll run some flat bendable plastic over the cylinder wall and see if it glides over (pitting) or gets stuck (build up). Pistons are pretty well stuck though. Soaking with a WD-40 like lubricant to see if that helps at all.
Brandon's Garage Great, thanks for the hit. But, I figured as much. Any tip/trick to removing the thermostat cover? It's pretty stuck on there. I know that'll need to be changed. So far, I haven't found much info on removing the thermostat. But, I imagine not everyone's cover for it is as stuck.

I have a question I recently bought a 1969 9.5 Johnson (very cheap) with a broken drive shaft stuck in the power head above the impeller. The guy I bought it from said he'd hit something on the river and thought he broke the prop pin but turns out it's the drive shaft. I've been trying to get the shaft out and can't without pulling the powerhead head. The engine runs great but I'm afraid it got to hot. As the shaft was broken above the impeller I tried to push water through it without the lower unit on with a sauce bottle through a fuel line attached to the copper tube. No water came out of the motor when I did that. When it was running I was told in the past this could be a sign it's cracked internally? Does this sound right? If so how do I know?
I just picked up a 1970 9.5 evinrude . The reed valves look terrible, corroded and not tight . Just wondering if you still have and want to sell yours . I also need the choke rod assembly . I just started taking it apart so I'll probably need more small things. Compression was 60 in both , piston walls look good . Anyway thanks for a great video ,very helpful to us tinkerers out here .
I’ve got a 69 9.5, I got it out of my pawpaws she’d. Got it runnin now, only pushes my 12 foot John boat 5 mph, gonna check the compression cause I’m sure that’s the problem, if the compression is bad im gonna replace the rings and pistons. Could you do a video on that?
Your series on the 9.5s has been great. I finally started mine up (2nd pull). I ran it for about five minutes then throttled down to slow and it stopped. When I tried to start it again, it was too hard to turn over with the recoil starter. Not seized because I could turn the flywheel by hand but definitely hard to turn until the second revolution. I started it again and ran it for another five minutes, then I throttled down and the same thing happened. I did a compression test and got 60 psi on both cylinders. Could it just be compressed air/fuel near top dead center on one of the cylinders that is making it hard to turn over? It runs smooth then every few seconds it misses. I think that is when it stops at low speed.
Brandon how much do you charge to rebuild a powerhead? I have a 79 Johnson 150. I've taken it to two boat mechanics that told me it needs to be rebuilt because I have different compression on all four cylinders
I have the same motor. Mine has a piece broken out of the raised bar section across the whole top of the cylinder head with the thermostat attached to one end. Im guessing it is part of the thermostat. Can you tell me exactly what that hollow section does? I was thinking of trying to jb weld it or something so i dont have to spend $130 on a head and gasket. The motor runs fine btw, but i dont want to overheat it or anything.
Thank for doing this Outboard motor. I have a 1964 Johnson 9.5hp motor from my late father's stash. I didn't want to spend a fortune on it. But I really wanted to get it running for my boys & their job boat. I am getting 62psi on both cylinders, is that okay for this model?
@@BrandonsGarage you know I really never even thought about till I watched your video and I guess it just hit me then I really got to thinking about it the carburetor was on the other end of the motor from the plug .thats what got me thinking just how does this work

White powdery corrosion residue isn't usually the problem, I find that stuff is usually a hint that you'll have more problems as you continue.

anywho, usually I dont, as you can usually buy a good used one on ebay for less than the cost of a rebuild.

Pretty sure thats a water line.
If you have a manual it'll tell you.

How does the crank shaft get oiled and bearings
2 stroke engine, oil and gas get mixed; when that misture gets drawn into the engine from the carb, everything gets coated with oilgas.
