    Wow great deal for 40 bucks. Thats one clean 9.5 with low hours.Check the thermostat too would be advisable judging by the way that motor looks its probably mint. I have a video on CZcams showing a wrench I made to loosen those thermostat covers as they can be corroded pretty bad when used in saltwater mostly and break easily prying them out. I have worked on many of them thru the years.That motor deserves a cowling paint job and new decals when you have the time Great find!...Glenn P. outboard mechanic and collector for many years.

    • @jeremyhall134
      @jeremyhall134 Před 3 lety +2

      In the back of the motor, on the port side, there is a rubber 'boot' for the exhaust. When that is cracked it suffocates the motor. Also, if you are running these turtle top motors in a barrel, because of how low they sit, with the cowl on, it will pull in exhaust from the barrel. So, top off in the barrel, or run a fan on high simulating it being on the water and getting fresh oxygen.

      The comment about the coils touching the flywheel **sometimes** could be a clue that the crank bearings are worn out. Being a 2-stroke good bearing seals are necessary to keep the crankcase sealed against air leaks. Heat & vibration under load could be causing an air leak to mess with your air/fuel mixture.

    I own 4 of those and I love them ! They are a low compression engine, 70 is ok on that one . The reason the 9.5 is around is mainly for duck hunters because of the low profile and shifter is for easy shifting when retrieving your decoys and it’s one of the first to go to 50:1 ratio on oil ! I’m working on a linkage to run 2 at a time on one controller ! You got a real nice score for $40 plus 9 for Sierra impeller and 21 for carb kit =$70 heck if I lived closer to you I’d give you $150 for it ! Lol. Go to amazon and order you a copy of Peter Hunn's book called The Old Outboard Book. I think I paid $9.95 for it. It will save you money and show you the versatility of Johnson/Evinrude motors. It will tell you by model # and serial # what year it is and how many were made. Yours looks to be just like the 3 I 68, 70, and 72. For $40 bucks "you stole it at that price." they will sell depending on your area warmer/colder climates . Warmer waters very cheap more hrs. on them plus the are usually seized up. Yours looks like it would be a # 2--3 out of 4 conditions.. Number 1 being the best like a show room model. In Ohio you could get what ever some (craigslist sellers) think its worth just because its a "OLD ANTIQUE" but relistly $350- $400 depending on hrs. But nine out of 10 times no one knows useless its got a hobbs meter on it. (Tracks running time).
