Sir, I just purchased my first jon boat and motor. I have rebuilt thr jon boat and resealed it and painted it. I found a , I think, a 67 Jonson outboard 9 1/2 hrp that runs. I'm very capable of working on this but love the fact you are out there for me. You seem like a good guy.

Mine is an Evinrude Twin-Sport 9 1/2 HP which is exactly the same engine. Now I know why and what to look for.

I've ran across this problem a couple time years ago. Too bad I didn't have internet to solve the problem. One motor I rebuilt and never figured it out. I kept it on the lake at home and just ran it with the cover off for years. I love those little motors. they sip fuel, are quiet, lighter than Mercs and start so easy.

Salut TiMichel ! Just to add some background on this design, I've been told that the 9.5 hp was a somewhat hastingly designed motor that came about under OMC's marketing dept pressure who's research had shown great consumer interest for an all-purpose lght, portable and low sitting engine. Basically, OMC wanted to be first on the market with that product but needed a few years to come up with the revolutionary 9.9 / 15 hp "start from scratch" model. The 9.5 would have been a stop gap engine put together mostly from existing OMC parts. Thanks for the video. Amitiés mon ami !

Thank You!!! I have turtle 9.9 and it runs great without hood on. I thought I needed to replace the doughnut seal but now I know I need to look at 3 other seals.
I love the 9.5’s they are great outboards but this is the only issue that they seem to have. Other than that I think they are great outboards
this is fun last year i did chinese chainsaw in a box and built a Stihl mmm Chihl saw for 170$ im now on my 3rd outboard
2 strokes have more fun not just blondes
I would imagine that it was a primitive form of EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) in these motors...

Hi T-Mike. How does this engine breath anyway? I've had a look at mine and I can't seem to find an intake vent anywhere. Does it just rely on the cover making a bad seal?
Not sure what you mean - carb sucks in air for mixing with fuel
Mike. I have a 4hp 1984 johnson and the exhaust cover is shooting on water in spots. What gasket sealer do you recommend? Im assuming its leaking water because there is no sealer.

I can not get this motor to tilt up. Idk if it’s stuck or what. Just bought this don’t know much about it.
Has to be in forward gear to tilt.
