I redid a CD 12 and had the same problem with brand new aftermarket points. I took them off and examined them after a couple of attempts at cleaning. I found that the contact surfaces were misaligned and not square causing just a small part of the points to touch. Well they would get burnt pretty quick. I ordered a new set but in the meantime I started tweaking the bad set and got them square. I never had to use the new set that I ordered. The motor runs like a top now.

I used an inline spark checker that works pretty well. My top cylinder is fine my bottom is missing. New points, new coils, new condensers. Took the magneto apart tonight replaced the kill switch wire that was pinched under the coil. This thing is driving me nuts. Hopefully that was the problem. Checked the plug wires as well for shorting to ground. The new points line up awful and there are no way to bend them to make them line up better. OEM parts too. Hopefully tomorrow is a better day. Always enjoy your videos.

I wonder if the first condenser was faulty and ate up your points. Then you changed the condenser and it still had bad points.

    Mike
Awesome video as always. Did the points fail from a bad condenser?
    Were the points off alignment?
What caused the pitting so quickly?
Your thoughts and wisdom are appreciated!

This video was great. Very informative. I'm hoping once I take these motors apart, I won't have this issue.

Holy crap man you might have just saved me money. This is exactly what started happening to my 1963 10 hp Johnson today! Exactly at high speed too. It’s coming apart right now. I was totally lost and about to can it I was so tired of changing out parts. Aiyyyyyyy!! 🤞🏼
Update: took it apart and sure enjoy the points were jacked up. Looked burned and black. And one of the condensers was real loose. Anyways cleaned up the points and put it back together but ran out of daylight. Ordered a new kit just in case but gonna give it try tomorrow. 🙏

Ad points?? What are too aiming light at?? Or just using it to see spark? I have a collection I want to restore and run. Is there a good parts source or a good manual for restoring all the OMC motors if that era?? Thanks Dandahermit

    Great video.
What caused the original new points (the off brand) to pitt so quickly. Cheap material, alignment?
Have you ever experienced this with Evinrude or Sierra points.
    Thank you.

Hey T Mike. Been watching you videos for awhile. You gave me the confidence to restore a 1956 Johnson AD-10 7,5hp. Would love to send you a photo of it but I don't have Facebook. Is there an email I could send them to you?
