This video was just what I needed to get my 1984 evinrude 9.9 hp running...
Excellent. :)
I also run it without water (for a very short moment) as I don't want the mess in my shop.
Tip: Find a matching socket and use a battery drill to turn the engine. It saves a lot of work.
I just came across a 1976 70 hp Johnson outboard and am to the carbs section of the bringing it back to life
Thank you so very much for each and every one of your videos. I took a class in prison on small engines and thought I knew what I needed to know. As I watch your posts I realize that I don't know much at all. Thank you for the no bull approach.
What did you go prison for?
Thank you Mike!! Your help got us on the Ohio river yesterday for a nice evening cruise. Great content and looking forward to checking out more of your videos.
Good afternoon Mike!
Love your videos and vintage outboards. I called you earlier today and you were so helpful in troubleshooting my motor. Thank you very much for your time and help. My son and I will get many more good fishing days thanks to you!
God bless from Arkansas!
Those old style OMC red capped condensers like the ones shown in this video will burn the points everytime (they were made differently inside back then than today). They need to be switched to the New Black topped OMC condensers to help from burning the points prematurely. When I test them with Stevens St75 meter the red capped OMC condensers never pass the break down/leakage test which simulates high rpm's I always replace the red capped condensers to be safe. Hope that helps someone watching these videos. Great Videos love watching them.
Thanks, T-Mike, you answered all my questions and helped me get my 70's Evinrude 4hp running right !
I dont know A whole lot about engines this is very well done thank you for going slow and explaining everything this really helps a lot I dad recently passed away and i inherited a vintage Johnson outboard I’d really like to get it going and repaint it
This is one of the best outboard videos I have seen. Thanks. I am subscribed
Thanks for your video my friend and me where trouble shooting a Johnson outboard, running rough and had to be on full power all the time to get it to go, I thought carb but now it think points. Thanks very much, take care.
Thanks Nicely explained !!!
Looking forward to watch your more in depth lessons
This is perfect, got my first little boat, mechanic says the little 6hp that came with it ain’t worth paying him to get it running. You may have just saved our little Father’s Day first time out on the boat trip in a couple weekends!
AWESOME! I learned a Ton, in plain English, not all that fancy technical jargon...Appreciate it man! Them handz though....😯...close to that flywheel....but you aint worried about contact because you probably got those good ole mechanic hands of steel! 😄✊
I like how you really struggled to start and it was not staged!!!
Enjoyed this video. I have a 1990 Johnson 6hp, very similar. I bought it new in 1991, and it still runs great, hoping your channel can help me keep it going.
I would add "air" to your three things, to make it four things needed to make an outboard go. Love your careful step by step approach. Great job.
Lol, I said the same thing~!~ Cheers~!~
Step by step excellent diagnostics to get motor running.
Great Video Mike. Incase someone in the past comments hasn’t mentioned it. Might be a good idea to remind viewers to ground the plug wires during the Compression check.
You did good and I thank you for the knowledge.....Steady sailing, Mate.....
Your videos are awesome T Mike. Thanks
T-Mike Cher, I like your videos yeah
I have that motor but my top cowl is not that clean another great job T mike keep making them videos love vintage outbords 👍
Greetings from Nova Scotia Canada. Great videos, awesome advice. Keep up the outstanding work !!!
My wife and I are planning a road trip to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland next June...Oh Canada! We're from Michigan.
Just got a 62 Johnson Seahorse 5.5 and it started with two shots of starting fluid and 5 pulls I was extremely surprised. Motor hasn’t been started in 18-20 years
thanks for your videos,, getting closer to get this 67 18hp going

Very good tutorial. Thank you
I just subscribed. I loved the video and you are Super funny and knowledgeable. Thanks

I enjoyed this video. Just got a gamefisher 5hp and it's dead. This will help me troubleshoot it but I have to get the tools.
GREAT VIDEO!!!! Truly appreciate the info and how to video KEEP MAKING THEM
Great video, it would be even better for people like me who know very little about this subject if you had links to your other videos on the parts you skip so I could watch it and then come back and continue the main video
Really great stuff here!
Thanks for your videos
Keep it up T mike's , from PNG
Thank's lot's to learn.
Great video Thanks for sharing!
Very helpful video sir
Good morning. Just started watching this video- i just received this motor from a Lady that lives behind me that lost her husband last year and i was helping them out with there lawn and driveway in the winter. Would have liked to seen how the flywheel comes off though? I have ben watching a lot of videos and seen a bunch of yours- thank you for them! I am waiting on parts that deliver today or tomorrow. I am putting this motor if i get it running on a 1956 Wolverine! Just hoping to get it going and get out on the water Thank you for the video’s! Have a good day
I have a video on removing flywheel. Recommend watching all my videos.
In joy you show, how you chec that compress on a good Cajun woman ha ? Do ido a wet pump or dry. Never did one before.! Igaronte....
I appreciate you! Thanks
Great Video !
Love that cajun humor
Great video 📹 👍 👏 👌 🙌 😀
awesome video, ima bout to get a old motor thats been sitting and am getting a idea o what to do. awesome advise hope i dont need it
Hey, good at motors, how about the ladies? Make that Cajun women. I think I’ve seen a dog running around your shop but never any ladies. We would like to see the actual shop manager, always good to know the boss.
Nice methodical approach to getting an unknown motor up and running by the way. Always like your how to stuff.
great video - My motor lost spark and stopped running - followed your tips.. Turns out I had a bad coils and powerpack. I upgraded both and the motor is running again. Thanks so much. I've got a 1978 9.9 Model 10E78M - I'd like to upgrade to a 15 HP carb. How do I go about choosing the correct 15HP Carb as I'm unable to order from a retailer anymore due to the product being obsolete? and along with the Carb are there any other parts that need replacing/upgrading to complete the conversion to 15HP?
Thankyou kind sir.
Thanks.
Great video dear friend..
Thank you sir
I have a 1964 9.8 HP Mercury and want to know if I can change the electrical system to more modern setup? also do you think I can use it as ever day runner?
That creep engine = like ours. dang!! My buddy yanked his shoulder socket out of place = much swearing. Anyways, we try what you did and hope so dont need to buy points ($60 each) or coil/condenser. Hope so simple cleaning, Thank you
Reckon Miss Cajun safe from you. I caught me one a them...best thing I ever did in my life.
Great video, (1)How do I know if the spark plug wire is going to the right spark plug and they're not switched I'm trying to get a 10 hp johnson going (2) How many lbs compression is good for a 1969 -10 hp johnson motor
Money , luck , looks. 😂😂😂 subscribed
T-Mike great videos and wicked helpful. I have a 6hp Evinrude looks identical to the one in this video. Both cylinders have spark and are reading about 30 psi. Do you have a video on how to increase compression or know how to fix this issue? Not sure how difficult it is
Sorry I don’t work on powerheads. I could find you a good used one if interested
three things HAHA I LOVED IT Keep up the advice Sir
THANK YOU
Hi Mr. T-Mikes you made good video. What is the best good compression for evinrude 2 hp 1978 Regard's
60 to 90 pounds
Awesome thanks buddy lol
Great 👍.
Do you know anything vintage Scott outboards?
Hey T. I was wondering about the no water. Glad you mentioned it! Can you reply with the compression tester you use? So many reviews on testers that give inconsistent readings. I need one a good one! Thank you!

Great informative video thank you. I have a 68 Johnson 6 up that runs and idols great but at full throttle bogs down, I rebuilt the carb I’m kind of stuck, any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated

@@michaeljsimon hi be fan, I'm having trouble removing the lower unit in this same motor, there is no nut to unscrew the shift link . Is one solid rod
There are 4 total wires headed toward the stator, you only tested 2
What do the other 2 wires do?
I have a 88 Johnson 15 no spark on either plug. If I followed you right I need the ignition module on the rh side
First. Your newest sub.
What about switching to electronic ignition?
starting fluid gets fuel system rolling in the spring
What about the wiring other 35 evenrude that won't start
Good videos. I have a 1940 Handitwin that moves freely, but it hasn't been used since before I was born in 73. I need to check for spark...here's my question...would it be ok to pour a little 2 stroke oil in the cylinders before turning over the motor just for safety's sake? I realize compression has to be tested on a dry cylinder...so I'll do that first. Am I risking cylinder damage testing on a motor that hasn't run in a while? Thanks
Yes. I use WD40 to lube cylinders. Just leave plugs out and crank several times.
Hey T-Mike! A Morgan City boy here now living in central Texas. Just found your channel and love it! Would you happen to have a carb for a 67 (I think) 9.9 SeaKing?
Sorry. No
@@michaeljsimon that’s alright, bruh. Still love the content!
Love your channel T mike. I want to ask for your expert advice. I have a 2.5 hp Johnson HD 25. J got it running after learning some tricks from you. I changed out new gaskets, cleaned the carburetor. However, it has problem with poor idling and surging. Any advice for possible cause? Thanks a lot,
Did you dual in the carb per my video?
@@michaeljsimon I am not sure about your question, T Mike.
Did you do this?

Hi all, I have Johnson 5.5 cd-14 only starts when throttle is full, then it just idles. It dies if you back off the throttle. I have gone through the electric(coil,point...etc)system according T-mikes videos. I also have cleaned and rebuilt the carburetor also following T-mikes video. I am at a loss what to test/adjust/update next. any thoughts? FYI - T-mikes video's are GREAT!
Try using a timing light for testing spark - sounds like your running on one cylinder

Hi Mike, I just picked up a 1961 Johnson 3hp with its own onboard fuel tank. What fuel/oil ratio would you recommend for this motor? Thanks, Bob
I’d use 24:1 but would search for owners manual to verify.
Awesome
Mike, since there is no carb kit available 9.5 Evinrude, I'm afraid to take the carb apart. Can I soak the entire carb in 'cleaner' for a day or two? with some positive results..

Mike, I have a Mercury 15 2 stroke mariner, cleaned carburetor, checked compression ok, reeds ok, replaced and checked fuel line. The engine runs only with active primer then if I take it off it dies and goes out. Can you suggest me what to do? Greetings from Michele from Italy.Thank you
I forgot, checked spark plugs and spark ok
Great video I came onto your video looking on how to troubleshoot my engine. I have a 1960-1975 4hp 2 stroke mercury does this apply to this engine as well mine won't start now had it running a couple of times. I rebuilt the fuel pump new diaphragm new check valves and gaskets she ran good after that. she ran for a minute why I was on the lake then died and didn't fire after that so any advice will help thanks...
Yes. This video applies to your motor.
Thank you
Hi. I have a 1979 Johnson two stroke 6HP Model Number:6BAL79E, has a long shaft. What do I need to remove the spacer to turn it to short shaft. Can you give me some advise and do you sell the needed parts?
Thank you
You will need a short shaft, water tube and shift rod. I can put a kit together. Please text me at (337) 278-5429 thx
thanks for the video, I suspected the pulse pump,,,put a new one,,,,new fuel inlet and outlet hoses, 2 crankshaft seals...everything hoses hard,,,works for 3 sec....turns off...again manually I pump it up...hard...runs for 3 seconds...carburetor repaired. ,,intake...etc...ultrasound of the bowl...if it works...I remove the supply hose to the carburetor...no fuel...no pulse.........the answe
Hey Mike. Just got a 57 18hp fasttwin. Bin sitting for 30 years... do you have a video on getting this to start and run? Compression, spark, and fuel!!!!
Just use this video. Same methods.
Good afternoon Mr. T Mike. I have an interesting one but I need to send you a picture do you have a different link? Would appreciate it so much.

Hi… How come you start and run them without being hooked up to water?
I’ve had my fill of American 2 stroke vintage outboards… I now only buy Japanese 2 or 4 strikes. I’ve restored numerous Honda “B” and “BK” 4 strokes…..bulletproof. Good job.
Vintage OMC outboards are some of the smoothest running and most reliable outboards in history.
@@kurtlyons136
You’ve obviously never had or worked on a Japanese outboard…
@@kurtlyons136 you never did say why you run them without coolant?
I have a very old 1948-1949 Hiawatha 3hp outboard that I recently tinkered with until I finally got it to start up and run. However, it will run for about 30 seconds plus or minus and then cut off. Sounds to me like a fuel problem, but what are your thoughts? Any suggestions?
Fuel pump
@@michaeljsimon Is that something I can easily clean? Where is it located? All I see is a big carburetor, but where is the fuel pump?
What is the tool called for checking compression? Great videos keep it up

Thank you and thank you for not making fun of me even though I'm laughing at myself right now. I'm working on a 1952 Martin outboard motor 7.5 HP I'm missing the twist throttle and having problems locating one. 15:05 why do you keep turning the choke on and off when you pull on the rope?
Trying to add more fuel
I have great compression, spark and fuel. All I get is a single POW fire every 20 times I pull the rope. I've been through everything except under the flywheel. Any suggestions?
Try spraying fuel in cylinders
I would add 4. Air and 5. Timing

How can I get 15hp
I come across the 15th horsepower evinrude motor and when I open the top of it it looked like some of the wiring has been mess with.
I'm not sure how it goes is there's any way I can send you a picture through a email or something and you send me, somehow a wiring diagram . I really enjoyed this video and I'm been looking for somebody who knows what they're doing with boat motor and you are the man. vintage Evinrude boat motor would like to send a picture of that so I can get these motors going.
