1971 Johnson 9.5hp outboard motor

- I bought this 14 foot Starcraft boat and Johnson motor 2 years ago. The motor didn't run well so I set it aside until last winter. Cleaned the carburetor, new points, and a new cam, as someone had cut this one down. I suspect they over torqued the flywheel and had to cut the cam down to make the flywheel fit. I found snap rings under the cam so it would align with the breaker points. I removed them and replaced the cam with a new one. I think the flywheel had already been replaced as it seems fine. It is interesting to see some of the things we can run into on these old motors.

That’s a fantastic little runner there Greg. Brings back memories with my little brother and I before he sold it. Did everything together with it. Fishing, swimming, boat rides. Sure do miss it. Thanks for sharing. I’ve got the same motor up on my channel.

I think they are ugly compared to the 50s motors, but they are good runners. I like the looks of the Evinrude 9.5, but not to so much the Johnson. I don't like that shade of green. Thanks for watching.
I just acquired one of these motors (1967 9.5) I tore it apart cleaned the carb, runs excellent now. Waiting on a carb kit in the mail, then it's fishing time!! Cool video

It was a good video. Is it semi-normal to have to the lower end leak a little gear oil? It could be, because it sat on it's side for a long time and the seals may need to soften up.. any ideas?
+I Be Trollin' They Be Hatin' There shouldn't be oil leaking from them. If oil leaks out, water leaks in. Having said that, many of these old motors were not 100% tight. Especially if the prop shaft has a little wear at the seal. I have a 55 Johnson 5.5hp, I re-sealed, but it still has a little water intrusion, enough to make the oil milky. I just keep the oil changed in it a couple times a season. be sure to drain it before winter to avoid freezing and ice breaking the gear case. . Running your motor might help the seals limber up.

Thanks for your excellent videos.
I also have a 1971, 9.9 Johnson, which sat for a few years in a barn about 5 years before my friend just gave it to me. I lubed it all up, cleaned fuel system, and with fresh gas, started right up, and runs good.
The problem is with the twist throttle, which moves between START and FAST with no problem, but simply won't go past (below) START, no matter if engine is running, or not ... or in gear, or not. The throttle just comes to a positive stop at the START position. I have a feeling I am doing something wrong, or just missing something. Any thoughts on how to throttle down to SLOW, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, David
+seacaptaindw It could be a couple of things. My first suspicion , and easiest fix is the twist grip is binding on the plate that has the slow, shift, start, and fast on it. Spray a little lubricant of some kind around that area. I have had this happen on several motors, and that fixes it. The other problem could be the armature plate that holds the coils and points might need grease. That would involve removing the flywheel to get to it. Give the twist grip some lube, I think that is the problem . Let me know if that fixed it. The motor in this video was one of them with the binding twist grip.
Greg, Thanks for the suggestions. I lubed up the twist-grip, as recommended. It definitely helped, but throttle still seems to bump-up against something solid going 'below' START. I'll try removing fly-wheel and report back. Thanks again, David
Update: Decided to give the metal FAST-START-SLOW plate a closer look. Yup, it was buggered at the bottom, causing the problem ... so, you're a genius, and I thank you. Long story short, she's working A-OK. See you don the road ... David

Yes, most OMC (Johnson -Evinrude) dealers still have many of the parts. There are numerous places online. I like marineengine.com, and iboats.com Many used parts on places like ebay.
I know nothing about these motors, but are they not 2 stroke? If they are two stroke what "cam" are you talking about?
So why do you feel you need run the spare motor when you get home in the barrel?
I don't like to lay motors down. I am afraid of water getting into the cylinders. I had it happen on a Martin 7.5 one time.

the camshaft??? no, that will be the crank....
Don't know why I said camshaft. What I was referring to was the cam on the top of the crankshaft which opens the breaker points. It had been cut down for some reason. Obviously these two strokes do not have a camshaft.

Probably around 50 lbs. The "spare motor about the same, wife, well about 80lbs less than me. :-D
